ProgramDescription andProjectAreaTheBronxRiverGreenwaySignageProgram is designed to facilitatewayfindingalongan8-miletrailthatbeginsattheNYCportionoftheBronxRiver,andextendstotheWestchesterCountyborder.Ad-ditionally,thewayfindingsignageprovides directional information to significantdestinationsandameni-tiesinandaroundthetrailarea,includingtheBronxZooandtheBronxBotanicalGarden,aswellastransportationlinkssuchassubwayandMetroNorthstations.

SignTypesandUsageTherearethreeaspectstothesignageprogram:Wayfinding,whichis to say directional information; Identification,whichconsistsofagraphicidentificationtreatmentforparksalongthegreenway,aswellasa‘feature’identificationcomponenttoidentifyspecialaspectsofasite,e.g.KayakandCanoeLaunch;andOrientation,whichiscomprisedofmaps and user facility information fortheentiresiteaswellaslocalcommunity information.

DirectionalMessagesTheprecisewordingforalltrailmessageshasnotbeendeterminedatthistime.However,examplesofpreferred and common messages areprovidedinthe‘wayfindingsigns’section(B2).Asthesignageprogramisimplemented,themanualcanberevisedtoreflectfurtherdevelopmentofmessagingconventions.

SignPlacementOff-routewayfindingsignsshouldbe located along greenway ac-cesspoints.Identificationsignsforparksshouldbelocatedalongthegreenwayshortlyinadvanceofthespecificparksite,inbothdirections.Directionalsignageshouldbelo-cated at greenway intersections and decision points depicting greenway directionand/oroff-routedestina-tions.Orientationsignageshouldberelatedtospecificparkimplementa-tionprojects,andlocatedataccesspointstothegreenway.

SignMaterialsSigngraphicpanelsaredesignedtobefabricatedwithahigh-pressurelaminateorembeddedgraphicsprocess.Inallcasesthesepanelswillbe2-sided(evenifonesidedoesnotdisplayamessage),consistingoftwo0.25"thickHPLpanelslaminatedback-to-back.Signpostswillbe1-1/2"Schedule80pipewithapow-der-coatedfinish.Thesignpostcapswill be fabricated from Grainger 1WKK6PVCWhiteSocketCapswith2.25”outsidediameterand1.9"insidediameter.Capsshallbesandedsmooth,trimmeddownto7/8"overallheight,andpaintedwithenamelonallsidestomatchPMS376c green. Fabricator will provide shopdrawingsconfirmingalldimen-sionsandhardwarespecifications.BronxRiverAlliancemustapprovealldrawings,colors,materials,andmethodsbeforefabrication.

ArtworkBronxRiverAlliancewillberesponsible for providing digital art-workforgreenwaymap,arrowsandlogosusedinthesignage.SEGD Recreational Symbols must be used. TheycanbepurchasedonlineatSEGD.org. Local orientation map art willbesuppliedaspartofspecificpark implementation programs. Fab-ricationvendorshouldinformtheAlliance of any format requirements or preferences.

The following wayfinding conventions and sign module descriptions have been developed to guide in the imple-mentation of the signage program. Both the Directional and Informational modules use the same base sign unit, but their messages, content, and lay-outs vary in order to present the user information in a clear and consistent manner.

Following is a description of module functionality:

SignModuleDIR-1:On-routePrimary Directional

Thismoduleistheprimarydirec-tionalsign,usedatintersectionsanddecisionnodes.Theinforma-tionappearingonthesesignsmayeitherrefertoupcominggreenwaydestinations,orprovidedirectionalguidancetooff-routedestinations.

Thissignmodulecontainsbothamappanelandamessagepanel.Themappanelisuniquetothismodule.ThemessagepanelisphysicallyidenticaltothemessagepanelintheDIR-2module.ThegraphiclayoutconventionsshownintheStandardsManualreflectappropriatecombina-tions and iterations.

Thisisatwo-sidedsignunit,andinmost conditions will carry direc-tionalinformationonbothsides.Themappanelwillalwaysbetwo-sided.

SignModuleDIR-2:On-route Secondary Directional

Thismoduleconsistsofatwo-sidedmessagepanel;thispanelisphysi-callyidenticaltothemessagepanelintheDIR-1module.

Thismodulecarriessecondarydi-rectionalmessagesthatareintendedtotrailblazetothedestination.Thismodule also is used to communi-catewarning,etiquette,orregula-toryinformationfortheuseofthegreenway.Pictographsmaybeusedforthosesituationswherewordmessages would be confusing or too long. It does not replace mandatory MUTCDsignage,norshoulditbeused for critical regulatory informa-tion.TheStandardsManualgivesexamplesoftypicalinformationusageaswellastherecommendedmessages.

Thisisatwo-sidedsignunit,andinmost conditions will carry direction-alinformationonbothsides.

Off-routeSignage

WayfindingsignsdirectingtotheBronxRiverGreenwayfromothertrailsintheNYCGreenwaysystem,orfromotherlocations,shouldmeetthestandardsoftheNYCGreenway Bike Signage program. Thesesignsarenotcoveredinthismanual.

Wayfinding DIR-1, DIR-2Sign Placement Examples

Sign placement conventions:

(1) Along the main route, a DIR-1 module would typically be placed immediately adjacent to a side path. The messages on both sides of the DIR-1 would refer to the destination(s) on the side path. The sign should be placed on the same side of the trail as the side path, so that the directional arrow does not point across the path.

(2) On side paths, approaching a junction with the main trail, signs are to be placed approximately 100 feet from the intersection (or closer, if the line of sight is obscured). The messages on the A side of this sign would refer to destinations in either direction on the main trail. The B side would generally refer to a destination along the side trail, or it may contain a regulatory message.

(3) Signs may also be placed along straight sections of trail, away from junctions, if necessary to reinforce directions to destinations further along the trail.

Additional factors effecting sign placement include adequate clearance from landscape elements, and clear line of sight.
