The readings these last Sundays of the Liturgical year prompt us to look at different aspects of the end-time. Last week, we were told to live in a state of constant readiness. Today, we are told that we cannot simply sit back and wait for that time to come. The man who buried the money was punished, not because he was a poor manager of funds, but because he did not take his responsibilities seriously enough. Out of fear, he wasted the gift that was given to him. It is important to note that we are accountable to God, not so much for obedience to rules and regulations, but for the responsibilities of our life situations. All of us are different and are given different gifts by God. How do we use them? For ourselves? For others? Squander them or waste them? There is no life calling that is devoid of obligations... parent, teacher, son, daughter, employee, employer, pastor… all of us must act… all of us must serve others (increasing the “money” that was given to us). It is in faithful accomplishment of the tasks of life that we make present the reign of God among us, that we bring forth a new age. Being faithful to God, using the gifts God has given us may result in hardship and suffering but in the end they show we are God’s holy people and committed to His kingdom not our own. No one knows the final coming of Jesus, but we must live each day as end-time people. If we don’t live, share and deepen our faith…we may lose it! REFLECTING WITH THE PASTOR

USE IT OR LOSE IT!

Looking back at several skills and talents I “had”, but no longer feel comfortable with, is somewhat depressing. I used to be a good trumpet player… but haven’t played the horn in over 9 years, who knows what will come out. I used to be able to tie any knot as an Eagle Scout, now I don’t know if I can tie a bowline. I loved downhill skiing but haven’t done it for over 10 years, I would probably be an accident waiting to happen. In high school and college I loved math, now I am happy just to balance my checking account. I used to be in pretty good shape since I worked out and exercised on a regular basis, now I’m worn out carry my groceries into the condo. I took French, Latin, Spanish, Greek in school, now… well, forget this one… I never really learned the languages in the first place. But you get my point… use it or lose it!

A man went on a journey and entrusted his servants with his money… so begins our gospel. Upon his return, the owner required an accounting of his servants. A talent was about six thousand denarii and one denarius was equivalent to a day’s wage. Therefore, even the servant who received only one talent was entrusted with a sizable amount of money. This last servant did nothing with his money except bury it and was penalized for his failure. It was taken from him and given to the one who had the most. Use it or Lose it!

THIS WEEK, FROM THE ST. SUSANNA RESPECT LIFE MINISTRY...

“Building a culture of life isn’t something we just do one month of the year, or with one event or initiative—it’s essential to who we are. It happens through our daily actions, how we treat one another, and how we live our lives.”

Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan, Chair, USCCB Committee on Pro-Life Activities,2017 Respect Life Month Statement, https://goo.gl/NSMjxT

COMMITTED TO CHRIST, LIVING IN GRATITUDE

Thank you to all parishioners who have completed and submitted your Commitment Card to the church. As a reminder, all commitments need to be submitted to the church no later than December 10 in order to be accounted for in the final Summary Report. Please complete and submit your card to the church even if you are unable to make a change to your current level of giving. For those registered parishioners not currently supporting the church with regular offertory gifts, please consider a monthly gift to support the needs of our parish.

BAPTISM PREPARATION

St. Susanna is excited to walk with our young families preparing to celebrate the Baptism of their children. Please know we have made some changes in our preparation process to better help our parents to be “the first and best of parents” in raising their children in the Catholic Church and no longer have the preparation program every month.

Look to our parish web site, www.stsusanna.org/baptism to register and begin our exciting new process. Once the form is completed, a member of the Pastoral Staff will contact you and help discern the best options for preparing for your child’s Baptism.

The next Baptismal Preparation class is Saturday, December 2nd, at 10:00am in the St. Susanna Room.

THIS WEEK, FROM THE ST. SUSANNA VINCENTIANS

The good news of today’s Gospel is the extravagance of what is being given us. All we need do is be faithful in “small matters.” The cost of fidelity has no comparison to the reward given. When you give the furniture, household items and clothing you no longer use to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, you are sharing God’s extravagant love.

Our loving God is the first to know this and so invites us with this parable to trust, invest, and enjoy the returns.

—Fr. Mark Haydu, LC

© 2017 Liguori Publications • Liguori, MO 63057-9999

November 19, 2017Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time (A)Prv 31:10–13, 19–20, 30–311 Thes 5:1–6Mt 25:14–30 or 25:14–15, 19–21

What’s Our ROI?

The Gospel today encouragesgood investments! Jesus

heaps praise on the good servants who were faithful in small matters and rewarded with the joy of the master. The servant who gets called wicked and lazy is punished, not because he miscalculated a risk but because he feared his master and took no risk at all. He was frozen by the thought that he could lose everything, so he buries the talent and anxiously awaits the master’s return. He is wicked not for investing poorly but for not investing at all.

God has given us all so many talents, and he does so for us to enjoy a grand return on investment (ROI). He wants us to use our talents, work them, develop them, and—at the end of our lives—enjoy showing him the way they have multiplied. Like a loving parent, he knows that much of our happiness is in developing and growing those talents with his grace. Those talents are a sign of his call and an invitation to step out in faith.

Parents, your job is to help your children develop their talents and dreams. A confident, enthusiastic, and risk-taking child is a sign of parents who know the balance of loving discipline, positive motivation, and a healthy distance. Children who feel secure in the love of their parents are willing to venture out and invest their talents, for they know someone will always be there to accompany them and catch them if they fall.

[Jesus said,] “It will be as when a man who was going on a journey called in his servants and entrusted his possessions to them” (Matthew 25:14).

For ReflectionWhat are the most important talents I have? Think of virtues, abilities, qualities, time. Which talent should I invest in more so I can enjoy the return God wants?
