Friends in Christ,

When I served as a chaplain to Marines, we sometimes participated in an “operational pause.” This was a time to stop and assess. What was going right, what wasn’t – how could we accomplish our mission more safely and effectively?

A good way to think about our summer schedule is to see it as a time of assessment and adjustment. The seasons of Christmas and Easter are so busy (and wonderful), but the lazy days of summer are a time to take inventory, do some soul-searching, and make adjustments.

As you will notice elsewhere in this newsletter, the Worship Committee, after an eight month trial period, has decided to discontinue the Connections praise service at its current time (1:00 p.m. on Sundays). However, over the summer months, a taskforce will be looking into ways to preserve the unique spiritual “feel” of the ser-vice. They will take the time to examine all the options with every intention to bring the service back in some new way in the fall.

Please pray for their work. Also, be aware that we will move to one Sunday morn-ing worship time over the summer months of June, July, and August. The ser-vice will be held at 10:00 a.m. in the sanctuary, followed by a reception in the fel-lowship hall. Saturday Café Worship will continue throughout the summer at 5:00 p.m. in the fellowship hall. Whatever Sunday service you currently attend, thanks in advance for supporting the 10:00 combined service.

How can we accomplish our divine mission more effectively? Our church commit-tees and I would love to hear your ideas!

Peace be with you! Pastor Jay

Council Members Dr. Michael Miller, President Bill Bond, Stewardship Jim Stark, Vice-President Marilyn Sorenson, Social Ministry Ann Fosburr, Secretary Libby VanZino, Evangelism Jenn Billingham, Fellowship Carole Glynn, Christian Education Property, Mitch Wilson (Buildings) Debbie Rescott, Treasurer (Advisor) Ben Troemel (Grounds) Michelle Davis, Financial Sec. (Advisor) Alfred Domschke (Administration) Angelika Domschke, Worship

The Church Council meeting was held on May 9th and here are some highlights of discussions and deci-sions.

The meeting began with a devotion and prayer from the pastor A guest to council, John Stotz, presented his plan for an Eagle Scout project. He proposed to build a wooden box by the dock to hold life jackets and kayak paddles. After asking many practical questions, the council approved the project. Fundraising will be led by John to cover the cost. Minutes of the last meeting were reviewed and approved. - Pastor’s report. Four new members will be received into the church on May 21st. - Financial Secretary’s report – not available. - Treasurer’s report – available upon request and posted in the fellowship hall. - Evangelism – Libby reported that the contest for a new church logo has been extended. Once a design is chosen, the youth will use it on church mugs while the Evangelism committee will put it on backpacks and cozies. A new brochure is in the works but will not be finalized until the future of Connections wor-ship is determined by the Worship committee on May 21st. - Worship – no meeting yet in May. - Fellowship – there were 160 participants at this years’ Easter breakfast. Coffee hour sponsors are need-ed for the summer months. - Social Ministry – an average of 26 people were fed each weekend at the food pantry. It was good to see many of our homeless friends join us for the Easter breakfast this year. Bike ministry and Laundry min-istry have been very busy. Publix has been providing lots of free baked goods. A letter of appreciation will be sent to the manager at the Satellite Beach Publix. A memorial service will be held in the next few weeks for three of our homeless friends who have died recently. Marilyn asked that all who donate food items check to make sure that they are not beyond their expiration date. She asked that we have a recog-nition Sunday for helping ministry volunteers. - Property – May 7th a team meeting was held. The area around the water fountain in the Ministry Center was repaired by Dave Martz and will be painted soon. Still looking at options for repairing the roof over the narthex. Difficult to get bids. Mitch Wilson repaired the damaged pews in the back of the church, saving the church thousands of dollars. Lawn care has been minimal since there has been so little rain. The crew is looking for a good quality push mower. Projects in the near term – seal church dock, repaint church sign, repair concrete on west side of the sanctuary, and repair sidewalk by women’s outside bath-room. A new cleaning contract will be discussed with our cleaning service. Old Business – - Coffee pot in the fellowship hall is still in need of repair. Jenn will set up a time to have an electrician come in to look at it. - Timeline on church coffee mugs? They will be ordered by the youth once a design has been chosen. New Business – - Eagle Scout proposal (see above). - A proposal was received to hold a string camp at the church this summer. After much discussion, the issue died for lack of a motion.

SOCIAL MINISTRIES AT LCR

Food Pantry: The featured items for the Food Pantry are listed below: (Please bring them to the shopping cart in the Sanctuary or basket in the Fellowship Hall)

6/4 - Beef Stew 6/11 - Spam 6/18 - Mac ‘n’ Cheese 6/25 - Canned Vegetable

Thank you for your gifts and would love to boost this month’s donation. We are in need of razors, deodorant, toothbrushes and toothpaste. Please give from the heart.

PANTRY HOURS: The first 4 Saturdays of each month from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.

Bike Ministry: 2nd and 3rd Saturday of every month. 10:00-12:00 noon.

LCR does not accept clothing donations: If you have clothing donations we suggest Cocoa Beach Community Church Thrift Shop.

Have an overflowing piggy bank at home?? Share your coins with the Laundry Min-istry at LCR. Each month we give the gift of clean clothes to our homeless friends and pantry clients at a local laundromat. Your coins bring smiles to many faces! We never realized that the homeless see their clothing as dis-posable, but it makes sense. Imagine wearing the same clothes in this heat for weeks at a time! Such clothes get to the point where they are unweara-ble. Now, the homeless and those in economic distress have a chance to wash and renew that clothing. One less shirt in a landfill, and good stewardship of God’s gifts!

The giving of loose change to the laundry buckets in the church narthex and fellowship hall has fallen off over the summer – time to raid the piggy bank!

NEEDED: The Bike Ministry are in need of new and used bikes in any con-dition. We can pick up your donated bike or you may drop it off. We repair them and give them to those in need in the community.

LCR is doing GREAT things! Thank you for your financial sup-port now, but have you thought about leaving a legacy after you leave this world? Contact your financial consultant or church office for ideas. Thank you!

Upcoming Events Saturday, 6/3 – Sustainability Made Simple: Small Changes for Big Impact Cocoa Beach Public Library at 11 am

This event is free and open to the public. Rosaly Byrd, a 2006 graduate of Cocoa

Beach High School, recently co-wrote Sustainability Made Simple: Small Changes

for Big Impact. Lauded by Booklist as “an essential guidebook for anyone who wants to make a dif-

ference, Sustainability Made Simple: Small Changes for Big Impact (April 2017, Rowman & Little-

field) walks readers through small, actionable steps anyone can make at home, school, work, and

on the road to reduce their environmental footprint. With an emphasis on science, facts and practi-

cality, environmental experts Rosaly Bird and Lauren DeMates introduce readers to the concept of

sustainability and humanity’s growing impact on the environment, why it’s harmful, what steps the

government and other institutions are taking to help, and finally--what individuals and families can

do to make a difference.

Reminder: No Nitrogen Fertilizer from June 1 to September 30

There’s nothing fun about toxic algae, fish kills or dead zones. That’s why 50 east coast communi-

ties along the Indian River Lagoon—including Brevard, Indian River, Martin, St. Lucie and Volusia

Counties and most of the cities therein—ban nitrogen fertilizer during the wet summer months.

Check out the following:

cultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) website has fertilizer details for unincorporated Brevard and cities.

Happy June!

I am looking forward to the lazy days of summer. I have been busy with family life, work and church. I have been thinking of ways we can reach out to our community to spread God’s love. The love I feel when I am here at LCR or with others from LCR. I want to help grow our church family because I be-lieve that we all need people to connect with. I have been able to connect with the women of Eat Pray Love on a weekly ba-sis and I connect with my fellow brothers and sisters in Christ on Sunday here at LCR and when I am fortunate enough to

see them out in the community. I want to help others connect with us here at LCR and I have an idea.

This idea should appeal to everybody; We are going to paint rocks! and the J-Walker’s Youth Group are going to place them around Cocoa Beach. Paint rocks you ask? Yes! I got the idea from an article I read in Florida Today. The idea behind painting rocks is to brighten someone’s day. To connect with others. To reach out. We can do that and in the process, we can share the love God has for all of us. I want to use these rocks as an invitation to have others join us for worship.

The plan! Join us Sunday June 11th after worship in the Fellowship

Hall. I will have everything you need to paint rocks. I will explain in fur-ther detail how I envision the plan working and we will have fun in the process.

Everybody is welcome! No experience required!

All ages all levels of talent (or lack thereof) Fellowship and Fun guar-anteed! Plus...pizza!

Look for the sign-up sheet posted in the Fellowship Hall and in the Narthex.

Blessings Libby VanZino Evangelism

**I suggest bringing a change of clothes as we will be using acrylic paint
