Your Dollars at Work 13

Dear Friends,

We are proud to share with you REFLECTIONS 2014,

The Masonic Charity Foundation of Connecticut’s annual

report of fundraising activity.

Charitable contributions to The Foundation are of critical

importance because they help Masonicare meet the needs of

its residents and patients when no other funding source is

available. Your gifts pay for things like eyeglasses, dental

work and replacement batteries for power chairs but also

help Masonicare pay for projects to update and improve

facilities for the comfort and enjoyment of our residents and

patients.

As you may know, a significant portion of Masonicare’s

residents and patients receive the government benefit

Medicaid, or Title 19. In 2014, 67% of residents at

Masonicare Health Center and 75% of residents at

Masonicare at Newtown were on Medicaid, and 95% of

residents at the Wright Residence qualified for Title 19

benefits. Unfortunately, Medicaid reimbursement falls short

of meeting the actual costs of delivering care to this

population.

Reflecting on the previous fiscal year, we are inspired by

not only the generosity and friendship of Foundation

supporters, but also by the variety of donors who choose to

contribute to Masonicare. Generous contributions

were received from Masonically affiliated individuals and

organizations, Masonicare residents and patients and

their loved ones, employees and board members, corporate

sponsorship and matching gift programs as well as grants

from family foundations and donor-advised funds. All told,

4,768 donors contributed $3,761,670 to The Masonic

Charity Foundation of Connecticut in fiscal year 2014 in

support of programs and services of Masonicare.

We thank our donors for giving so generously, for every

gift is a vote of confidence in the good work we do.

Gifts to The Foundation continue to help Masonicare

distinguish itself as Connecticut’s leading nonprofit

provider of healthcare services for the elderly, and help

position Masonicare for a bright future.

Reflections 2014 ● 1

BOB KNOWLTON: WHY I GIVE

When my beloved wife,

Edie, and I decided to sell

our North Carolina home

and move to a Connecticut

retirement community to be closer to

our daughter in Killingworth, we

couldn’t find one that suited us. We

were getting discouraged. Then our

real estate agent said, “If you’re

interested in a community that also

offers continuing care, I’ve heard

good things about Masonicare at

Ashlar Village.”

We visited Ashlar Village and

were impressed with the people we

met. Everyone seemed to have a

smile. Everyone seemed happy. That

was big for Edie. If she saw a

grumpy-looking person on the street

or in the mall she’d often say,

“Smile!”

We enjoyed ourselves here. We got

to know our neighbors, went out for

dinners together and jumped at every

chance to take trips with other

residents.

My support of The Masonic

Charity Foundation also started with

my good wife. We had some stock

that had done very well and Edie,

being a charitable person, suggested

we use it to fund a gift annuity with

The Foundation. Besides the income

we received, the tax incentives help a

lot. We felt good about our decision

and liked knowing that our gift is

helping people less fortunate. I also

think that when you move to Ashlar

Village, you make a commitment to

Masonicare. You want the organiza-

tion to be healthy and successful.

Edie and I were married for over

60 years. Bless her heart, she was so

good for my life. She had been a

nurse and around 1995, after I retired

from DuPont, she got after me to go

to a prostate screening. I kept putting

it off so she went ahead and made an

appointment for me, even though she

knew I had a golf date. I went for the

screening and, based on the doctor’s

concerns, continued to closely

monitor my PSA. Two years later, it

jumped up dramatically. A biopsy

revealed that I had a very aggressive

form of prostate cancer. I underwent

surgery and radiation and, apart from

a few minor side effects, have been

fine ever since. I am still here

because of Edie, but the irony is that

it enabled me to be in good shape to

care for her.

In her later years, Edie suffered

from a neurological condition that

affected her mobility and coordina-

tion. After falling in our home, she

spent time in the Acute Care Unit

and short-term rehab at Masonicare

Health Center. When she was

discharged to continue her recovery

at home, we had visits from nurses,

social workers, physical therapists,

and occupational therapists from

Masonicare Home Health &

Hospice.

There were periods of improve-

ment but as her condition worsened,

the question was whether I’d be able

to care for her at home. I vowed to

try my best. As it became more

difficult, I added more Masonicare

services. I had help every day and

they were a good group. It seemed

like they were rooting for Edie to get

better as much as I was.

Edie spent her final few months at

our villa under the care of Masoni-

care Hospice. After she passed in

September 2013, I sent a note to the

staff who had cared for her to thank

them for giving us such a good

quality of life.

Bob Knowlton

Bob and Edie Knowlton joined TheFoundation’s Cleaveland Society in2007 in recognition of their generous charitable gift annuity.Bob funded a second gift annuity in2013 and is a consistent supporterof the Masonicare Annual Appeal.

Reflections 2014 ● 5

My awareness of Masoni-

care goes back to my

involvement with the

Order of the Amaranth, to which

I’ve belonged for over 30 years.

Supporting the work of Masonicare

is one of our primary philanthropic

projects.

I’ve always believed in philan-

thropy, but because my mother and

grandmother were in Amaranth, I

grew up around women who had

strong Masonic ties.

In her later years, my grand-

mother worked as a live-in aide to

others. Eventually, she required

additional care herself, and moved

to Masonicare at Newtown. She’d

say, “I wish I’d come here sooner.

I’ve never been happier.” Up to

that point, she had often lived on

her own but you could tell that she

just blossomed. And the care she

received was excellent. The staff

was so nice and so supportive. She

loved finally being the one who

had others waiting on her. In fact,

when Masonicare put out an

informational brochure explaining

what the facility was all about, my

grandmother was on the front

cover. That was my first opportu-

nity to see what Masonicare is all

about.

My mother couldn’t give a lot

because money was tight. What she

gave from the heart was so much

more than from her pocket. That

made a big impression on me, and I

realized I could donate my time

and efforts where it was needed.

But once I was able to afford to

give money to causes I believed in,

Masonicare was the first place I

wanted it to go.

It’s an exhilarating feeling to see

how my donations are helping

residents and patients, especially

since I joined The Masonic Charity

Foundation’s Quality of Life

Committee. The committee reviews

requests from Masonicare staff on

behalf of residents and patients in

need and, when appropriate, uses

money raised through the Annual

Appeal to pay for things like

hearing aids, eyeglasses, wheel-

chair repair -- so many things. I get

so much out of my work on the

Quality of Life Committee. Of all

the ways I’ve been involved with

Masonicare, that’s my favorite

thing to do because it makes me

feel so good to be able to help.

Sue Koty

Sue Koty is a Past Grand RoyalMatron of the Grand Court of Connecticut, Order of the Amaranthand a generous supporter of the Masonicare Annual Appeal. In addition to her work on the Qualityof Life Committee, she also serves onthe Board of Directors of MasonicareHome Health & Hospice and Masonicare at Home, the FinanceCommittee and the Audit Committee. Her daughter, Carol Koty, is anaward-winning chef who has broughther culinary skills to the residents ofLockwood Lodge, Masonicare’s assisted living facility in Newtown.

The Worthy Grand Matron’s Spiritual Care Project

Masonicare is committed to caring for the whole person: mind, body, and spirit. That’s why The Foundation was honored in 2014when Shirley L. Hungerford, Past Worthy Grand Matron, choseMasonicare’s Spiritual Services program as a beneficiary of hercharitable endeavors. Shirley named Past Grand Chaplain MargeryB. Zurko to chair this fundraising initiative. “I knew that Margerywould be fully dedicated to getting the task done,” Shirley said, “andwould do so with a lot of energy and enthusiasm.”

Many generous donations were collected, totaling over $8,400 toenhance spiritual care at Masonicare. These funds have madepossible the purchase of new large print hymnals for the residents atMasonicare Health Center and Masonicare at Newtown; a digitalpiano for the Masonicare Health Center Chapel; new wirelessmicrophones; new tables to display remembrance memorials, guestbooks and bulletins for chapel services; and a new projector, speakers, and a DVD drive for the viewing of spiritual videos.

In appreciation of gifts of $35 or more, The Masonic CharityFoundation created personalized book plates with an inscription of thedonors’ choosing for display inside the new hymnals. Past GrandMatron Hungerford and Past Grand Chaplain Zurko graciouslyvolunteered their time to affix the book plates by hand in the newhymnals. The Foundation offers heartfelt gratitude to Shirley, Margery, and all those who contributed so generously in support of spiritualcare at Masonicare!

Reflections 2014 ● 11

When I joined the Freemasons in 2001, the vast majority of Masonicare

residents were Masons or had Masonic ties. So the response from folks here

was as if I’d just gotten married. Everybody was coming up to me and

congratulating me like I’d just become an official member of the family. It was pretty

special.

Giving back to causes you believe in is a huge part of Masonry. Besides making

new Masons, the most important role of any lodge is reaching out to the community

and helping out wherever we can. Even the small groups, like the Square Clubs, might

raise $80 or $100 but they want to give it to a worthy cause. That’s always been big.

Working for Masonicare has only reinforced that for me. You see every day how the gifts of donors, Masonic

or otherwise, are helping people, particularly residents who are on Title 19. The residents are like a second

family to our staff, so the generosity of the donors really hits home.

I was also motivated to support the Annual Appeal because of a pair of Past Grand Masters: Gail N. Smith

and his father, the late Gail L. Smith. I had the utmost respect for them. They started the Masonicare Society in

2006 as a way to recognize donors who give $520 or more to the Annual Appeal. When they did that, I said

“Count me in. I have to be part of that.”

Anybody who works at Masonicare, in every department, encounters the good that the organization is

doing. How could you not want to help out? Any size gift, big or small, is appreciated. And if we, as

employees, don’t support the cause, how can we expect others to support it?

Jason Rieger

Jason Rieger has worked for Masonicare since 1989. He began in the food service department at MasonicareHealth Center and today is Assistant Administrator for Assisted Living at Pond Ridge in Wallingford.

Back in the late 1970s, when I

was Associate Grand

Marshal, we ran tours of

Masonicare Health Center on

Sunday afternoons. I really enjoyed

doing that because it enabled me to

see what a magnificent facility it

was.

I’ll never forget the time that this

older couple from West Hartford,

who were heading down to Stamford

to visit with family, decided to stop

in Wallingford and check out the

Health Center. The man said to me,

“I’ve been a Mason all my life and I

never realized what this place was all

about.” A short time later, he and his

wife ended up moving to the Wells

Apartments and were very happy

there.

I decided to volunteer for

Masonicare whenever I could. My

greatest joy was serving as chairman

of the Masonicare Health Center

Board of Directors. That was

extremely rewarding. And, of course,

it explains why Elaine and I decided

to support The Masonic Charity

Foundation.

The staff of The Foundation do an

excellent job of raising money for

residents and patients in need while

also controlling costs. I see it every

year as a member of the Masonicare

Golf Classic committee, for which I

was proud to serve as chairman on

three occasions.

Ken Hawkins

Ken Hawkins is a Past Grand Master of Connecticut Masons whohas served on numerous Masonicareboards and committees. In 2008,when ground broke on a new independent living apartment building on the Wallingford campusof Masonicare, Ken was surprised tolearn that it would be named in hishonor. He and his wife of 57 years,Elaine, are benefactors of The Masonic Charity Foundation andlifelong residents of Milford, CT.

The Tree of Life honors and memorializes loved ones while also

benefiting the patients and families served by Masonicare Home

Health & Hospice and Masonicare Partners Home Health & Hospice.

In 2014, The Masonic Charity Foundation of Connecticut held non-

denominational Tree of Life tree-lighting ceremonies at the Italian

Center of Stamford, the East Hartford Community Cultural Center

and -- for the first time -- the Mystic Arts Center. Collectively, the

events raised $72,850. Many thanks to lead sponsors Pitney Bowes,

Dignity Memorial Funeral Homes and Morrison Senior Living for

their continued support.

Through their support of the Masonicare Annual

Appeal, Foundation donors provide important

funding to enhance the quality of life of

Masonicare residents and patients when there is no

other funding source available. Recent purchases made

possible by gifts to the Annual Appeal include:

LSVT BIG and LOUD treatments for Masonicare

Home Health & Hospice patients. LSVT BIG

(physical/occupational) therapy has documented

improved ratings on tests of motor functioning in

people with Parkinson’s disease following treatment,

including faster walking, bigger steps and improved

balance. LSVT LOUD (speech) therapy is used to treat

speech disorders for people with Parkinson’s disease.

Music program at Masonicare Health Center and

Masonicare at Newtown. Music isn’t just for

entertainment. It’s used to unlock memories, improve

communication, ease anxiety and promote relaxation in

our long-term and dementia care residents.

Power chair repair and replacement at

Masonicare Health Center. Power chairs and

scooters provide important advantages to long-

term care residents facing mobility-related

challenges. They may lack stamina or have a

medical condition that limits their ability to walk.

Donations to the Annual Appeal have made it

possible for Masonicare to provide residents with

new batteries for these devices, repairs to essential

components like the armrest-mounted joystick

controllers or, in some cases, brand-new chairs.

Nutrition program for Masonicare Home

Health & Hospice patients. To help reduce

acute hospital readmissions, Annual Appeal

funds were used to provide nutritional

counseling to home health and hospice

patients.

Gifts to The Foundation have also subsidized

resident transportation, social work visits,

complementary therapies for hospice patients

(massage therapy, expressive arts therapy and

music therapy), hearing aids and eyeglasses.
