Clark & Post Architects in Lorain, Ohio. During my first co-op one of my tasks was to create postcards that the firm would use to

advertise and showcase some of their best works. With the use of Adobe InDesign and Photoshop, I created four brand new

postcards that the company now uses to advertise to prospective clients. I drew inspiration from the project the

postcard was showcasing and then tried to give each design a taste of what the building was about.

September 11, 2001 was a life changing day in our nation. During my first co-op, a local joint vocational school obtained a piece of the World Trade Centers’ wreckage and challenged the community to design a memorial to the fallen heroes. Clark & Post gave me the task of submitting a design for the firm using Rhino and Photoshop

While no winners were selected for the competition, this design takes elements from all three major locations of the September 11th attacks and combines them to create one memorial. The beam from the towers, the pentagon, and the Pennsylvania flight path.

The beam from the wreckage of the World Trade Centers in New York City

stands in the center of the memorial circled by the halo-like silhouette of the Pentagon building.

The flight path of Flight 93 which crash landed in Pennsylvania weaves itself around the beam.

This stands on a base which recalls the locations of each attack with a timeline of that fateful day.

Creating schematic design options, schedules, construction drawings, renderings, and walkthroughs

to show the client, the firm now knows how to produce a project using this incredibly useful program.

In assisting them through this process, it greatly stregthened my own understanding of the program.

Clark & Post Architects, during my second quarter of co-op, was beginning their first ever Revit based

project. An international company asked the firm to design an addition onto their headquarters. My

task was to help this AutoCAD based firm transition effectively into Revit while collaborating with engineers.

Fort Ancient is an ancient Native American site that attracts many different visitors. People come to learn

from the museum and others come for the archeology of the site itself. Both sets of these people want to

come to learn more about the Hopewell Indians that once used this site and created the mounds that

the site is known for, but both sets of people have very different ways of doing so and one cannot really exist without the other. The museum and lodging are located in the southern most part of the site and are

seperated from one another but are linked by the library and research space.

This space can be accessed from both sides of the building to encourage visitors to the museum and archeologists to share and learn together. The intervention does not intervene with the site to preserve the way it would be viewed by the Hopewell Indians when they were building up the site themselves. The building hugs a mound using one entrance on either side of the mound and wrapping around the back side of it. The entrance paths to the museum and the lodge come together for an outside seating and gathering area, mirrorin what the building does just on the other side of the mound. [fort ancient]

During my winter quarter of my second year, our studio project was based on tectonics,

plains, frames, and volumes. We started with a base drawing of boxes of various

shades of gray and a description of the drawing: central.

We then began to create a drawing on top of the base drawing that related

to our description word. My final drawing is seen on the right. While this drawing was being completed,

we began to create a physical model of this drawing

Using the Rapid Prototyping Center, powder printing, laser cutting, and our own woodshop

crafting, we were challenged to make a 2D drawing a 3D reality. After the model was

started, we were given a program. This studio worked backwards, from drawings to model

to programming and helped me to better understand the basic designing process.

Immersion quarter, the first quarter of my second year, was the first studio where I got to create a building. Focusing more on the acutal building,

design process, and diagramming and less on the abstract ideas of design. This Literary Center is a

space where writers of all backgrounds would come to write and read and give lectures. This studio gave

me a better understanding of the design process.
