Susanto Ginanjar Putro, Architect The jury recognizes this project due to its focus on the educational dimension of the realization of a building. A well-elaborated pedagogic concept introduces the idea of a low-tech but detailed design project that serves as an impetus for community building. The orchestrated and moderated process becomes more and more independent and empowers the local community. The project proposes an idea of architecture as a vehicle for educating people. The project embodies an intention to em- power the rural community in developing their vision to- ward a better quality of life. We achieve this by hitch-hiking architecture: riding architecture and space materialization processes as a vehicle for enabling and empowering. The project does not merely construct architecture as physical materials; it constructs a situation where the community becomes aware of their own potentials and strengths. The project is built upon place making processes that become a channel for educating the community. It highlights the role of architecture as an instrument of change towards a better life. The project develops a space for community with an open brief that allows various programming of activities by the community. A major element of the project is the rebuild- ing of the community spirit of gotong royong, a social value that has been embedded in Indonesian culture and society for generations. Beyond the process of constructing spaces for community, there are opportunities for rebuilding the spirit of gotong royong within the community to move for- ward. The dialog that initiates the project becomes a commu- nication media to build the community’s shared visions, and to form commitment for achieving the shared visions. The dialog generates space programming that could pull together the whole sections of community, provides media for commu- nicating and sharing, and offers wide access to information. The construction process is a critical stage towards space materiality as well as community strong integration. The project promotes various learning programs to empower and enable the community. It includes learning to believe they can accomplish something together, learning to have vision and to nurture dreams, and learning to build from what they already have. Local values, local resources, local knowledge and skills form important ingredients in the learning process. The project offers an open brief, creating spaces that are open for the community to fill; it is an archi- tecture which they could transform and where they could learn to act to strengthen their community bonding. The ultimate achievement of the project is not the physical space but the formation of communal values and spirit to strive for a better future. Innovation and transferability – Progress Innovation finds its way in this project through the new role of architecture as an instrument for educating people. The project challenges the notion of architecture beyond the visible materiality, and highlights its contribution in community learning process. The physical intervention be- comes a way to promote progress within the society, by en- abling community members to believe they can reach their goals together. So far this model has been implemented in four rural community contexts. The place making process and methods that are based firmly on localities allow the approach to be multiplied in various different community contexts, creating a series of positive developments within the society. Our team worked closely with rural community leaders and rural government officials, and this collaboration ensures a promising model for community empowerment strategies that are suitable for Indonesian rural communities. Ethical standards and social equity – People The project provides major benefits for the people in terms of educating, widening access for information and encouraging a vision for a better future. Soon after the project was com- pleted, the place had become a media for communal gath- ering where they could develop their collective dreams and goals. Different segments of the community have utilized the space for various positive activities, such as community meetings, religious activities, social gatherings, traditional music rehearsals and other activities. The place also becomes an information center and reading space. The reading mate- rials provided for the community also widen their horizon, allowing them to explore possibilities and opportunities for new enterprise, new creation and better way of living. It also becomes an activity center for school-age children and younger children. Environmental quality and resource efficiency – Planet Environmental quality is defined in terms of local values and resources. The construction process of the project was managed appropriately based on the availability of local resources, local materials, local technology and local skills. Bamboos and woods become the primary materials of the project as they could be found easily in nearby surroundings. The construction technologies applied are based on the technical skills acquired by local people. Economic performance and compatibility – Prosperity The project demonstrates two sides of economic perfor- mance: financial efficiency and long-term economic benefit. It runs on a minimum budget, by prioritizing the elements of place-making that are the most important. Our team worked closely with the community in determining appro- priate design solutions within the budget restriction. For long term benefit, the project process has promoted the community dream for a better future, encouraging their belief in their ability to reach a more prosperous life. Contextual and aesthetic impact – Proficiency The programming of the project is based on an open brief, allowing the community to fill in the space with any possi- bilities depending on their needs and visions. The project triggers various further actions by the community in rela- tion to their local situation and social structure. Aesthetics are built upon local aesthetics, through refined design that is sensitive to local contexts, in terms of both physical and non-physical contexts.
