Turning brushesinto business 18Parts from Turkey? Not so long ago that was something of a rarity. Today Turkey is home to a huge, and growing, motor industry. Reman, too, is making an appearance.
As will be evident from this issue of ReMaTecNews, automotive and heavy duty remanufacturing is moving towards summer in a healthy state. On several fronts, the reman industry is expe‑riencing an unusual, if not unheard of, range of activities and decisions, innovations and initiatives. Since remanufacturers in general survive ‑ and thrive – on their ingenuity, this is cause for some satisfaction.
As always, the current edition of ReMaTecNews reports on a number of these activities and initiatives. This time around, however, a not insignificant amount of the magazine’s con‑tent is devoted to the upcoming ReMaTec Show in Amsterdam (16‑18 June). In view of the magazine’s affiliation with Amster‑dam RAI, the owners of the show, we might be suspected of not being entirely independent. That’s an accusation we’re
happy to refute – if anybody was to raise it in the first place. The fact of the matter, of course, is that the biennial ReMaTec shows ‑ alongside other prominent remanufacturing fairs – to a very significant extent are the glue that binds the industry together, its communication centres, its market places. Whether your field is starters and alternators, AC compressors, brake calipers, turbochargers, engines or something else again, “walking the show” may be a small physical effort, but the rewards can be huge. And the more effort that goes into that walk, the higher the reward.
In that respect ReMaTec2013 is no different from its predecessors in 2001, 2003, 2005, 2007, 2009 and 2011 (have the years really passed that quickly?). What is different is the maturing of the show – and, indeed, of the whole reman industry!.

As spokesman for the APRA‑Reman Enterprise Group, Josef Frank will act as a link between the remanufacturing industry with its specific requirements on the one side and political and economic decision‑makers at national and European levels on the other.
“Lobbying, strategic networking and internal/external communications are key success factors for REG – and Josef Frank has more than 40 years business experience in the automotive aftermarket to take on the chal‑lenge,” says Peter Bartel, Chairman of APRA Europe.
Josef Frank started his business career in 1964 at an automotive wholesaler in Ger‑many before switching to global automotive player Bosch in 1973. During his 33 years at the Bosch Automotive Aftermarket Division he worked in sales, marketing and general
management in Germany, France and Sin‑gapore before being appointed aftermarket director of CLEPA, the European Association of Automotive Suppliers in Brussels.
In Brussels, Josef Frank has advised CLEPA’s members on Automotive Aftermar‑ket legislative issues, run the CAF (CLEPA Aftermarket Forum) and the yearly aftermar‑ket conference. He has also been involved in lobby activities relating to the block exemp‑tion regulations (BER) and RMI (repair and maintenance information). In addition, he has been deeply involved in identifying remanu‑facturing as the key environmental protection industry and in promoting it within CLEPA as well as establishing key figures for the reman industry’s turnover and employment.

The European Division of the Automo‑tive Parts Remanufacturers Association, APRA, is embarking on a new activity in order to widen the association’s service to its mem‑bers. Named the “Remanufacturing Enterprise Group (REG)” this is a major initiative, first and foremost designed to strengthen APRA’s relationship with larger and medium‑sized
reman companies by facilitating networking and research projects. However, other initia‑tives targeting smaller businesses are on the drawing board as part of APRA Europe’s drive towards greater relevance to the reman indus‑try.
“It has become increasingly clear that the different segments of our membership have different needs, locally as well as glob‑ally,” Peter Bartel, Chairman of APRA Europe told ReMaTecNews. “By creating the Remanu‑facturing Enterprise Group we will facilitate joint projects in which those members have a direct interest. They will fund them them‑selves while other members do not need to contribute. We will cooperate closely with all other automotive associations to develop the remanufacturing business and include them actively in the project. CLEPA and FIRM will have a permanent seat in the steering com‑mittee. All activities are in line with the EU competition rules, for which there are active association policies in force”. Potential REG projects will develop remanu‑facturing globally. This could include cross‑border trade with remanufactured products and cores, market studies for remanufactured products in specific markets. Yet another area in which APRA expects REG to play a role is in the ongoing work with common definitions.

accepted by associations like ACEA, APRA, CLEPA and FIRM and to have the reman defi‑nition included in all free trade agreements,” Bartel added.
Working unitsREG will comprise three working units: 1) Working Groups for each project, 2) a Steering Committee and 3) a “Speaker” to act as the public face of the project.
Key figures in REG will be Josef Frank, formerly of CLEPA in Brussels, who will take up the position of “Speaker” while Volker Schittenhelm, the long‑time reman aftermar‑ket specialist for VMI and FIRM in Germany will become Project Manager of the REG.

The second World Remanufacturing Summit will take place in Shanghai, Republic of China, from 2‑4 December 2013, China’s National Key Laboratory for Remanufacturing has announced. Under the theme “Partnering Industry and Science ‑ Bridging Today ＆ Tomor‑row” the event will bring together high‑level representatives from the reman industry as well as leading scientists, engineers and other remanufacturing specialists from across the world.
Moreover, the China National Develop‑ment and Reform Commission (NDRC), China’s most important economic planning body, is expected to use the summit to announce new policies for remanufacturing in China. This will further highlight the summit’s role in facilitat‑ing links between reman companies and sci‑ence and research worldwide.
The event is the follow‑up to the first World Reman Summit at Bayreuth University in Germany in September 2012, which was organ‑ised by Bayreuth University in partnership with USA’s Rochester Institute of Technology, NY and the National Key Laboratory for Remanu‑facturing in Beijing, with ReMaTecNews as media partner. The partnership between the world’s three leading reman research institu‑tions and ReMaTecNews in Bayreuth attracted a global audience resulting in a decision to establish World Remanufacturing Summits as yearly events, rotating between Europe, Asia and the US.
”Again this year, academics, industry executives and decision‑makers from across the world will exchange experiences, discuss hot topics and analyse the latest developments in the field of reman,” said Professor Zhu Sheng, Director of Beijing’s National Key Laboratory
for Remanufacturing, the summit organiser. “Besides the participation of leading academ‑ics like Professor Rolf Steinhilper of Bayreuth University in Germany and Dr. Nabil Nasr of Rochester Institute of Technology in the US, there will be representatives from a range of leading companies and organisations involved in remanufacturing, such as Caterpillar.”
“We have chosen Shanghai as the venue because the city provides strong links between science and heavy duty and automotive reman as well as other types of remanufacturing. It’s easy for foreign participants to get to and the event will benefit from government sup‑port. That’s very important in order to hold a successful event of this type in China,” adds Professor Sheng Zhu.

Operators in the European aftermar‑ket for car compo‑nents are facing considerable chal‑lenges and the role of remanufactured parts will increasingly occupy the minds of many of them over the years to come. Accordingly, the pre‑
sent shortage of reman‑ralated market data may hamper the strategic and tactical con‑siderations of some remanufacturers as they prepare strategies for the remainder of the decade. To make up for this, the German con‑sultancy Wolk After Sales, intends to launch a major survey of the growing market for reman products. The company is now look‑ing for partners willing to co‑sponsor the initiative in which ReMaTecNews will act as a media partner and which will be the first to announce the outcome of the survey as well as some of the intermediate findings. If the necessary support is garnered, the survey is

expected to be completed in the autumn of 2014. “There is a clear demand by parts man‑ufacturers for more involvement in remanu‑facturing,” says Helmut Wolk, the company’s CEO. “By and large, this is driven by the reman industry’s achoevements and results, rising pressures on margins within new parts as well as the tigther requirements from the European Commission in respect of envi‑ronmentally friendly life‑cycle processes in the aftermarket.” Reman aftermarket 2015 ‑ Development in Europe. The study will ana‑lyze the market potential of the main reman product groups in the most important Euro‑pean reman markets and highlight current and prospective reman trends up to 2015. Ike Evans was president and COO of Union Pacific Railroad from 1998 until 2004 and vice chairman of Union Pacific Corp. from January 2004 until his retirement in March 2005. From 1989 to 1998, he served in vari‑ous executive positions at Emerson Electric Co., including senior vice president, industrial components and equipment. He also spent 21 years in key operations roles for General Motors Corp.

New Chairman at Meritor
After nine years at the top, Charles “Chip” McClure Jr., Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Meritor Inc. has suddenly stepped down from his position. He is succeeded by Meritor Director, Ike Evans, who will also undertake the role of interim President and Chief Executive Officer.
The company has initiated the search for a new CEO whereas Evans will continue as Executive Chairman. During his time at the top of Meritor, “Chip” McClure proved to be a consistent supporter of remanufacturing in general, and Meritor’s reman operations in particular, and was scheduled to speak at ReMaTecNews’ Remanufacturer of the Year award in Amsterdam on June 16. In 2012, Doug Wolma, General Manager, Remanu‑facturing, at Meritor won the award at a ceremony in Bayreuth, Germany.
The change took place during a board meeting on Friday 3 May with the new Chair‑man taking office with immediate effect. No other changes to the company’s leadership structure were announced.
“I consider it an honour to serve as Meritor’s interim President and CEO, and I’m committed to ensuring a smooth and seam‑less transition,” the incoming Chairman said in a statement. “ I know this company well having served as a director of Meritor since 2005.

Injectronics becomes InnovativeMechatronics Group Pty Ltd
Although Australia is about to enter winter, things are clearly looking sunny for Injectronics, the Melbourne‑based supplier of products and services for remanufacturers. Not only has owner and Managing Director, Rex Vandenberg reorganised the business into a new group, Innovative Mechatron‑ics Group Pty. Ltd, but under its new name, the group also received two awards at the recent Australian Aftermarket Expo in Sidney in April.
One award was given in recognition of Injectronic’s excellence in remanufacturing and the other for its marketing. The honours add significantly to other accolades received by IM/Injectronics over the years.
“The IM group was the only company to receive two awards on the night so under‑standably we’re happy,” said Rex Vanden‑berg. “I’m very proud of our team at the IM group for their innovation and excellence.”
“The decision to change name to Inno‑
vative Mechatronics Group Pty. Ltd reflects the diversification of products and services represented by the group’s four components, Injectronics (remanufactured solutions), RAE (ignition and sensors), DAT (diagnostic equip‑ment) and MAP (mechatronic auto parts.), explains Vandenberg. “ Ownership, manage‑ment, ABN, facilities and locations remain exactly the same as only the name of the company has changed. Customers will, there‑fore, continue to receive each brand’s unique product offering”.
Research and DevelopmentProviding remanufacturing solutions to
the Australian market for the past 20 years under its previous Injectronics name, the new structure enables IM to distribute and service its four brands under one umbrella. The com‑pany claims to offer Australia’s largest range of automotive electronics parts with over 1500 different part numbers. IM also provides
components, technology and test equipment to other remanufactures around the world and is a frequent visitor to exhibitions, work‑shops and seminars outside Australia.
Moreover, IM’s research and develop‑ment capabilities provide supply solutions for many OEM and vehicle brands in Australia. One recent project carried out by Injectronics for a large vehicle manufacturer company, was to convert a module, which was surplus to requirements, into a product the manu‑facturer could not obtain from the original supplier.
“This required component and soft‑ware changes and allowed the company to ensure ongoing supply to their dealer net‑work,” Rex Vandenberg explained.

Ever since the earliest days, cores have been the lifeblood of the remanufacturing industry. Without cores, no remanufactur‑ers. Without cores hundreds of thousands of people across the world would be jobless. Without cores for remanufacturing, global efforts to reduce the environmental impact of industrial automotive component manu‑facture would be at risk.
Yet, cores have always presented remanufacturers with one serious problem. How to secure a steady, accessible and afford‑able supply? While this will remain a question for some time to come, some of the motor industry’s giants have joined together to cre‑ate a solution. Launched last year and under continuous development ever since, the new CoremanNet core collection system estab‑lished by German giant Bosch is beginning to make its mark worldwide.
“So far we’ve established collection points in Europe as well as in Atlanta, Geor‑gia and Shanghai in China. We’re also work‑ing on a core return system for Russia,” Maria Bonelli of Bosch’s Reman Process department told ReMaTecNews.
Selection pointsThrough the selection points, Core‑
manNet undertakes the pre‑selection which means that cores are accepted or rejected in the country in which they originate. The credit note for the core value, therefore, can be processed directly after evaluation, a major strength of the concept.
Maria Bonelli emphasises that although CoremanNet is the initiative of major players, the concept is targeted at the reman industry as a whole, not merely at Tier 1 level busi‑nesses.
“CoremanNet is designed to reduce the complexity of returning cores,” she explains. “Today, Tier 1 companies use dif‑ferent channels to return cores to each sup‑plier of remanufactured products. Not only are the logistics different, but so is reporting and documentation. Coremanet is offering one single and systematic core return system which also reduces the financial risks for Tier 1s. The aim of it all is to provide simplicity, transparency and fairness.”
First introduced to the industry in gen‑eral at Automechanika in Frankfurt, Ger‑many, in September 2012, the initiative has gathered a great deal of interest and the three founding partners expect further sign‑ups over the coming months. They reject the suspicion raised by some that the initiative will be more advantageous to larger rather than smaller businesses.
A new initiative between some of the motor industry’s important players aims at solving one of remanufacturing’s long-time conundrums – securing a steady supply of cores. The instiga-tors, including Bosch and ZF, are currently rolling out a new, international core management system in Europe, USA and China. Others are invited to join in.

“Cores are the raw material for every remanufacturing process,” Bonelli says. “CoremanNet offers an international core return service with a simple and reliable core return process and surcharge compensation. This effective interface between dealer and remanufacturer provides the right cores at the right time in a defined quality to the remanufacturing plant. With a return quote of approx. 90% and one of the largest col‑lection volumes in the market, CoremanNet contributes directly to environmental pro‑tection because the higher the volume of returned cores, the higher the remanufactur‑ing quota and the greater the potential for saving resources.”
Substantial benefitsThe three founding partners have made it clear that they expect to see substantial benefits from a more orderly core manage‑ment system and that the concept will see significant expansion over the coming years. If, as often claimed, well organised core management is a prerequisite for successful remanufacturing, CoremanNet may well turn out to be a key.
”On the one hand, CoremanNet can strengthen the reman operations of industri‑
al remanufacturers’ businesses by providing a stable and fully developed reverse logistic system and on the other, it can help them achieve better market penetration through
collaborative core‑management – for those who wish to enter or develop new reman markets,” Maria Bonelli believes.

BBB, one of America’s largest reman‑ufacturers of starters and alternators and power steering equipment, is preparing an onslaught on markets in Europe. Last year, the aggressively expanding company from Mobile in Alabama in the southern US, appointed in Dorian Drake as European rep‑resentative in the UK. Founded in 1987 by brothers Jeffrey and Bruce Bigler, BBB initially operated as a regional remanufacturer of rotating electrical parts, focusing primarily on the niche import market. Over the past decade, BBB Industries has acquired a number of other remanufac‑turers in the US with an emphasis on rotating
electrics. In 2010, the company purchased LTD Parts, formally a division of Vista Pro, which provided entry into the power steering mar‑kets as well as an OE customer base. Now BBB is expanding into Europe.
“Our plans are in the early stages, but the intention is to open a distribution centre with main focus on Heavy Duty this year and then progress into automotive,” Bruce Bigler, one of the founding brothers told ReMaTecNews.
“Our expectation is that this will lead to strong, incremental growth for the business.”
BBB’s European move will be spear‑headed by its subsidiary, Wilson Auto Electric, a heavy duty operator with a long‑time pres‑ence in European markets.

Moreover, the company runs nine US warehouses designed to provide fast turn‑around anywhere in North America. The workforce totals some 2,700 employees. Located in Sefaköy on the fringes of Istanbul, Kardes＆ Elektrik recently opened a warehouse in Schwabach, Germany and towards the end of 2014 the company plans to move into a new purpose‑built head office at a total investment of several million dol‑lars. Close to Istanbul’s new super airport, which will be opened in 2017 to handle 150 million passengers per year, Kardes＆’ new 7,000 sq.m facility clearly marks another mile‑stone in the company’s history. In addition, the plant will offer plenty of scope for further growth as well as easy access to and from its foreign markets. The latter is of some consid‑erable importance to 43 year old Sırrı Kardes＆.

“We started manufacturing brush hold‑ers in 2007 because brushes were getting smaller and more difficult for customers to fit and this was an area where we had some experience, as we already had neces‑sary equipment since we are manufacturing rotary switches” Sırrı Kardes＆ explains. “Now it’s a really important part of the business – one that’s growing by double digit figures

As for myself, I believe that only healthy companies can manage healthy growth. That’s why it’s important we develop the business at a sustainable rate.”
“Sustainable”, in fact, is key to much of Sırrı Kardes＆’ thinking about the next stag‑es of Kardes＆ Elektrik’s development. As he puts it: “We want to convert ourselves from a brush manufacturing company to a reli‑able partner for companies operating within renewable, green or sustainability. To my mind our mission is to concentrate on what we do best – and that’s electrical.”
Fast supplierOne result is that today Kardes＆ Elektrik
ships brushes and brush holders overnight throughout continental Europe by invoicing from Germany. “To compete, you have to be a very fast supplier. We’re very aware of that,” Kardes＆ says.

During the year, Sırrı Kardes＆, Factory Manager and Vice General Manager Ercüment Tokuço＆lu are exhibiting at, or attending, most of the major aftermar‑ket shows and remanufacturing events across the world. Between them, they will represent Kardes＆ at fairs in Turkey, Bologna, Dubai, Amsterdam (ReMaTec), Shanghai, Moscow and Kiev. At the end of June, the company will launch a new website, a new catalogue and a new CD. Reman will clearly be a crucial component in the next fifty years of Kardes＆’ history.
“Remanufacturing has a bright future,” Sırrı Kardes＆ believes. “Cost is an important consideration but so is the environment and this is being recognised more and more around the world. Yes, reman is definitely part of Kardes＆’ future with plans to expand the product variety, not limiting ourselves to carbon brushes and brush holders only. But then again, here at Karde＆ we believe that we’re also part of the future of reman.”

Amsterdam RAI wishes to extend a warm welcome to visitors and to exhibitors at the 2013 ReMaTec show for the worldwide remanufacturing industry.
Those who have attended since we first opened our doors back in 2001 will agree that ReMaTec has chan-ged beyond recognition - and for the better too. Year after year, the exhibition has evolved in terms of quality, relevance, in its range of attractions and, of course, in numbers. In fact in 2013, we’re seeing the largest ever number of different reman-relevant activities ever assem-bled in one place in Europe.
Perhaps this is no great surprise. Within the automotive and commercial vehicle segments, remanufacturing has long since confirmed its role. Increasingly, governments, authorities and organisations around the world are sup-porting remanufacturing as one way in which to alleviate unemployment and reduce carbon emissions. It is one of the few industries to benefit the economy, society and employment all in one package.
The development of the ReMaTec concept, therefore, re-flects the growth of automotive and heavy duty reman in general: when the industry thrives so does the exhibi-tion. In times of slower growth, good exhibitions serve the need to communicate with partners and customers, exchange views and experience and, indeed, facilitate business.

Creating the most important remanufactur-ing event in the world
That was Niels Klarenbeek’s declared ambition when, in 2010, Amsterdam RAI, one of Europe’s largest conference and exhi‑bition venues, put him in charge of its bien‑nial ReMaTec shows. Four weeks before the opening of the eighth show in June, he’s supremely confident that he will achieve his goal.Bigger?
Yes! Better? Yes! And undoubt‑edly more rewarding for the almost 3,000 remanufacturing exhibitors and visitors who will gather at ReMaTec2013 in Amsterdam between June 16 and June 19.
“I’m quite sure of it,” he says. “Eve‑rything has worked out according to plan. The show floor is almost fully booked and visitor registration has been very promising. It’s also clear that our exhibitors have put
considerable effort into preparing for the show. In fact, this year the show will exceed the 2011 exhibi‑tion by 20% and the 2009 show by close to 75%.” In Klarenbeek’s opinion there are several expla‑nations for the show’s continuing development and growing reputa‑tion within the automotive and commercial vehicle reman indus‑tries ‑ with quite possibly other related segments to follow as the
show progresses.
“For one thing, the 2011 edition showed an impressive 60% growth in visitor numbers and now ReMaTec2013 already includes 60 first time exhibitors.
I believe that this is proof that the industry recognises the opportunities ReMaTec offers. Secondly, we’re witnessing that at a time of economic slowdown, the demand for remanufactured products keeps rising. In addition, the exhibition’s growth is clearly related to our extensive promotional campaigns over the past couple of years. Since 2011, our team has been promoting ReMaTec2013 across the world ‑ from USA and China, to the United Kingdom and parts of Eastern Europe. I think that we should be proud of the fact that the number of partici‑pating countries now exceeds 25.”
ReMaTec2013: Gateway to reman worldwideAfter two years of preparation, ReMaTec2013 is ready to welcome remanufacturers from across the globe. Focus is on “bigger and better - and more rewarding for visitors and exhibitors alike.”
This year, the show introduces a sizeable side programme
“I believe that in order to maintain momentum, we have to expand our horizons. That’s why we’re adding a variety of addi‑tional attractions, such as featured events in the ReMaTec Theatre. Specialists will present new dimensions for remanufacturing, such as aircraft and wind turbine reman. Together with other new exhibits, these will help to create a truly vibrant show. We have also ini‑tiated a new ReMaTec Social Event on Satur‑day the 15th offering a boat trip through the Amsterdam canals for exhibitors and visitors to network in a particularly pleasant setting.
We are also grateful that so many asso‑ciations, exhibitors and other stakeholders have decided to organise seminars, network‑ing lunches, dinners, task force meetings and other events in connection with the show. And the show floor? “We have more exhibitors in engine remanu‑facturing and reman equipment, such as parts cleaning, balancing machines and diagnostic equipment. Furthermore there is an impres‑sive increase in turbocharger and electron‑ics reman. Around the ReMaTec Theatre we have created a true “association & research boulevard” with APRA, FIRM, PREMANUS, EMISA, MERA, Bayreuth University adjacent to each other. All in all, I’m completely certain attendees and exhibitors will spend three rewarding days in Amsterdam.”
Bankers to take a closer look into remanufacturingIf, during the ReMaTec2013 exhibition,
one distinct group of visitors look more like bankers and financiers than members of the reman community, there is a reason. They are bankers and financiers – more specifically, leasing experts. And they come to the Amster‑dam RAI exhibition complex in order to obtain a closer insight into remanufacturing.
The bankers, 40 altogether, are brought to ReMatec2013 on Monday, June 17, at the initiative of Dutch leasing company De Lage Landen (DLL), which offers asset financing and leasing in close partnership with OEMs, dealers and distributors around the world. As a fully owned subsidiary of Rabobank, DLL
is backed by one of Europe’s most power‑ful financial institutions and operates within a select number of industries. These include food & agriculture, healthcare, construction, transportation & industrial, office technology, clean technology, and mobility and – possi‑bly – remanufacturing. The latter is what the event is organized to examine.
“At ReMaTec we’re having a seminar for a number of our program managers who specialise in car leasing, construction, materi‑als handling, transportation and agricultural equipment,“ explains Frits Engelaer, Sustain‑able Business Developer at DLL. “During this seminar we will be discussing our Life Cycle
Asset Management vision and jointly envision development priorities for 2015. “
“One of our aims is to become a leading partner in Life Cycle Asset Management by expanding our financial services towards inte‑grated leasing of new, used, refurbished or remanufactured equipment,” Engelaer adds .”We want to cooperate with forward‑looking manufacturers, resellers and remanufacturers to make such business models a reality. Any remanufacturer with ambitions to expand its remanufacturing capability could be an inter‑esting partner for us.”

PREMANUSProduct Remanufacturing Service System
PREMANUS, a European Research Con‑sortium dedicated to, amongst others, wind turbine remanufacturing is pleased to share knowledge and experience with ReMaTec participants. Its activities will appeal to reman practitioners, aca‑demics and others that feel they might benefit from an insight into the future of other reman segments than automo‑tive and heavy duty.
A representative from this interest‑ing EU research project will introduce the project in the ReMaTec Theatre on Monday, June 17 from 10.15‑11.00. PRE‑MANUS can also be contacted at stand 11.330 or through www.premanus.eu.
The lecture will, inter alia, discuss how make‑to‑order remanufacturers face up to challenges such as calculat‑ing the best quote for your customer before you actually see the product or establish which products to source from the market for remanufacturing? PRE‑MANUS’ remanufacturing services sys‑tem provides some answers as well as decision support for selecting the best remanufacturing strategy for individual products.
The PREMANUS project involves a number of experts in the areas of remanufacturing, waste management, business intelligence, and enterprise software. Headed by SAP AG, other participants are Politecnico di Milano, Loughborough University, TIE Kinetix, SKF GmbH, Centro Ricerche Fiat and Sir‑ris, the project is co‑funded by the Euro‑pean Commission under the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) theme in the 7th Framework Program for R&D.
Remanufacturerof the Year 2013
The winner of ReMaTecNews’ prestig‑ious Remanufacturer of the Year award to be announced on Sunday, 16 June. For the ninth year running, a highly deserving representative of the inter‑national automotive and heavy duty remanufacturing industry will be hon‑oured by ReMaTecNews. This will hap‑pen when the magazine announces the winner of its Remanufacturer of the Year award on Sunday, 16 June dur‑ing the ReMaTec2013 exhibition at the RAI exhibition centre in Amsterdam. The accolade is given to an individual or a company that has served the reman industry with particular distinction. The deadline for nominations expired on 15 May. The winner will receive his or her award at a ceremony at 18h00 during the Exhibitor Reception in the Holland Restaurant.

American Breakfast
The U.S. Department of Commerce will host an American Breakfast on Mon‑day, June 17 for the U.S. companies exhibiting at ReMaTec2013. This is as part of an official initiative to connect international visitors with U.S. manufac‑turers.
ReMaTec2013 is an important vehi‑cle for U.S. reman companies wanting to expand into foreign markets and the events value is underlined by the presence of 30 U.S. exhibitors, a major increase compared to previous years. A new and innovative technology is 3D‑scanning and optical metrology. Whereas time‑consuming tactile methods were previ‑ously required to digitize components, now powerful and effective 3D‑scanners do the same work in far less time. The Chair of Manufacturing and Remanufactur‑ing Technology at Bayreuth University in Germany, a worldwide partner for inno‑vative and future‑oriented remanufacturing technolo‑gies, now owns a state‑of‑the‑art 3D‑scanner which the Dr. Stefan Freiberger and Mr. Hans Westermann will demonstrate in live demon‑strations at the university’s booth at the ReMaTec Show in Amsterdam.
“This technology has important implications for the reman industry because optical digitization is a first step towards a successful and cost effi‑cient reverse engineering process,” says Dr. Stefan Freiberger. “For remanufacturing
companies the reverse engineering process becomes interesting when for example tech‑nical drawings or CAD‑models of compo‑nents are unavailable.”
The figure shows the reverse engineer‑ing process by using a 3D‑scanner.
1. In the first step a component is digitized as a point cloud by the 3D‑scanner using a stripe light projection principle

3D-Scanning and Reverse Engineering: High Tech for efficient Remanufacturing
Chinese forum at ReMaTec 2013
One of China’s prominent reman organi‑sations, the Remanufacturing Committee of China Resource Recycling Association (CRRARC), and PNSEEK, a Chinese remanu‑facturing company, will use ReMaTec2013 to host the seminar, Forum Sino‑Europe Reman‑ufacturing Industry – Demand and Develop‑ment of Reman. Between 10 and 15 members CRRARC’s delegation will attend and profes‑sionals from other countries are, according to the two organizers, welcome to participate for FREE.
There will be English translation avail‑able.Items to be discussed include the cur‑rent situation in the Chinese aftermar‑ket, how to explore overseas markets, how to export to China’s aftermarket and set up distribution networks and remanufacturing links between China and the rest of the world.
Other items are demand for the development of remanufacturing
enterprises in China and Chinese policies for remanufacturing. Two further subjects for discussion are how to strengthen commercial cooperation between China and Europe in remanufacturing and European remanufacturing and its relevance to China’s aftermarket.

The importance of ReMaTec2013 as a global meeting platform for remanufactur‑ing industry is also acknowledged by indus‑try authorities from other sectors. Recently, EMISA the European Maritime Independent Suppliers Association decided to take part in ReMaTec2013
EMISA is an international non‑profit making organization. All full members are independent companies specializing either in the manufacture of diesel components or in the supply of spares and service to the exist‑ing fleet. The Association was established to provide a voice for the independent suppliers to the marine industry.
The Association’s underlying funda‑mental purpose is the promotion of free and fair competition in the supply chain for exist‑

The reason is simple. It is only by main‑taining competition that service standards will be maintained and improved. Few of the millions of airline passengers think of remanufacturing when they board their aircraft. Nevertheless, aviation is one of the world’s most sophisticated remanufactur‑ing industries.

What system of checks and balances is used when it comes to remanufacturing aviation components? Having graduated from Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands, he was named best graduate by the Dutch Royal Aeronautical Society. After a brief period with KLM Engineering & Main‑tenance, he launched AELS at the age of 26.

assisting aircraft owners world‑wide with end‑of‑life decisions on all aircraft types. In addition to disassembly and dismantling ser‑vices, AELS also offers logistics, marketing and sales. In 2010, AELS was accredited by the Aircraft Fleet Recycling Association (AFRA), which is dedicated to promoting environ‑mental best practices. An active voice on envi‑ronmental issues, Van Heerden was named to AFRA’s board of directors in July 2010.

Boost for Turbo and Gearbox MarketUK reman drivetrain specialist Ivor Sear‑
le expects to generate an extra 5000 reman turbos a year and a further 3000 reman gearboxes, following the successful commis‑sioning of its new plant at Soham, in Cam‑bridgeshire north east of London.
“We are in the early stages in turbo production, but we expect to be able to reach that production level for turbos within the next six months,” says Chairman Colin Searle.
The £1 million plus investment, which includes a new factory build of 1400 sq metres as well as plant and equipment, has been a two‑year project from conception to completion. It will allow the company to generate stocks of its own reman turbos and gearboxes, all of which will be boxed as Ivor Searle products. The new plant has opened up new possibilities in the UK and the rest of Europe:
“In terms of volume, we had nowhere to go. We were at full capacity. We could foresee a time quite soon when we would have been unable to respond to new oppor‑tunities. Our aim now is to become a one stop shop in the UK and Europe for quality remanufactured products for the whole driv‑etrain,” he adds.

Maintaining competitivenessEstablished since 1946, Ivor Searle is one of the UK’s leading suppliers of reman engines, gearboxes and turbo products for cars and light CVs. Until now, the company has sup‑plied motor factors fleet operations and small engine remanufacturers with new and qual‑ity reman turbos and gearboxes produced by reputable third parties.
The vast majority of its engines are remanufactured on site. The company says the move to producing turbos and gearboxes is important because it will allow it to remain competitive in the market place and also allows
tighter control over quality and availability.New turbos will continue to be available
from stock. On the reman gearbox side, Ivor Searle sees strong prospects for growth. It plans to be producing up to 60 units per week by the end of the first production phase. It is confident that new demand from the domes‑tic and international markets will justify the investment:
“We do expect to generate new busi‑ness through existing clients and favourable exchange rates at the moment mean there is less competition from imports. However, our products are very competitively priced and
better value for the international buyers, too. We expect exports to increase once production reaches our target levels,” adds Business Operations Director David Eszenyi.
Increased employmentThe company currently employs 105
people. Although ten new jobs have been created as a result of the commissioning of the new plant, 20‑30 more may be required to meet demand as production levels increase.

QUALITY REPLACEMENT TURBOCHARGER PARTS
Like the motor industry itself, automo‑tive and heavy duty remanufacturing spans the globe. Another recent example is that of growing diesel product remanufacturer, Remaned, in Northern Spain. Having estab‑lished a production centre in xxx in the UK two years ago, Navarra‑based Remaned is now preparing to open its second foreign subsidiary ‑ this time in Brazil. In January 2014, Remaned will take possession of a new 2200 sq. m. factory in the Sao Carlos dis‑trict of Sao Paulo, Brazil’s industrial capital. Besides production, the plant will comprise a warehouse and an R&D facility for products for the local market.
“Our intention is to bring our high tech remanufacturing philosophy to a coun‑try with more than 200 million inhabitants and to make sure that our product range is accompanied by full customer support and training for those who need it,” says Oscar Villafranca, Remaned’s Managing Director. Customer support and training are much in demand in Brazil where there is a shortage of both.
Besides using the new venture in Sao Paulo as a conduit to other markets in Latin America, Remaned is focusing on consolidat‑ing its domestic market in Spain as well as strengthening sales in Europe. Overall, the
company’s products are sold in 29 countries worldwide. The group is currently develop‑ing a new line of diesel injection pumps.

UK reman supplier cashes in on change in the law Premier Components, one of Europe’s lead‑ing core suppliers, did something differently and flew the flag for the remanufacturing industry at the UK’s CV Show, in Birmingham in April.
While over 400 exhibitors (representing more than 500 suppliers to the commercial vehi‑cle industry) displayed everything from new brake discs to new trucks and trailers, Premier Components had a stand that displayed old, used parts.
“Many of our visitors today will be workshop people, with no more than maybe 4, 6 or ten commercial vehicles to maintain. In their workshops, they just take off the old parts and put them in a corner. We are offering them a chance to profit from them,” says Managing Director Danny Edwards. He added that the company is also aiming to capitalise on a change to UK law, last December. In a bid to discourage a growing trend to steal precious metals from places such as transport construction projects, existing buildings and
even vehicles, a law was introduced banning scrap metal dealers from pay‑ing for scrap metal with cash.
UK Home Secretary, The‑resa May, had described the move as a way to deny thieves fast access to quick profits through ‘anonymous, low risk transactions’. Danny Edwards says that as a result, Premier Core has capitalised in some areas and adds that some incre‑mental automotive core that was not reaching the market was now becom‑ing available for remanu‑facturing. “We are not a scrap metal dealer. We can pay workshops for their old core.”

We are aware that fuel economy
has been the driving force in transmission advancement. This includes DSG,DCT,CVT, Hybrid and planetary automatics. We have progressed from the 4 speed, to the 8 and beyond, each step increasing clutch activ‑ity and advanced control in solenoids and hydraulics.
The torque converter is a subassembly which transfers engine RPM to the transmis‑sion input or turbine shaft. It has the abil‑ity to multiply engine torque on launch and acceleration. It would require several articles to describe even a few of the variations in design and control. The modern torque con‑verter has an integral clutch of one or multi‑ple faced frictions, which by design and mate‑rial are allowed to slip or go to full apply. Slippage allows for smooth, semi‑application
at low engine RPM and vehicle speed. This converter and/or transmission clutch slippage increases component heat and at extremes, friction surface deterioration. No slippage results in better economy, but if it remains applied, results in harsh shifts. You could compare that harsh or bump drive‑ability to the manual gearbox without depressing the clutch pedal. That definition relates to the customer complaint of harsh up and down shifts in the automatic. The converter clutch must release or open during a shift to reduce torque and torsion within the driveline.
The converter clutch and the multiple transmission clutches require precise hydrau‑lic and solenoid output to avoid drive‑ability issues. Due to variable pressure control and high cycle rates, the valve body castings and
The value of a remanufactured product depends on the expectation of our customer. This is not an enlightening statement and we understand it applies to all products and services. This article is intended to raise the question; Do your customers realise a remanufactured part can be better than the original? If they are not aware, do we have the data and equipment to verify that claim?
I would assume those reading this,
have an expertise, but may not be familiar with automatic transmission control. I will start with a brief review and follow with an example of value through education or sup‑port. As in R&D, we need to understand the problem before we can resolve it, so a couple paragraphs will define that environment and current issues.
Automatic transmissions and torque converters are technically complex components that require considerable skills to remanufacture. Nevertheless, remanufacturers have some impor-tant advantages vis-à-vis their OE counterparts. Bob Warnke, Vice President, Sonnax Industries and a renowned expert, sets the scene.

evaluate those failures in torque converter, valve body and/or solenoids. We then use our engineering experience to develop compo‑nents which upgrade the original assembly. The aftermarket has the advantage of time, an experienced part and customer feedback
to improve upon the original design. To OE defense, they cannot predict or duplicate every environment or drive cycle their com‑ponent will be subjected to. In the aftermar‑
ket we see failures related to climate or area that would delay development by years if they could be duplicated at all.
Many of our resolutions have proven
to last two to three times the life cycle of the original. We could assume such upgrades would be cost prohibitive, but not in remanu‑facturing, where the core value is high and OE assembly either scarce or vehicle specific.
As noted in the opening statement; Value is relative to the expectation of the cus‑tomer. When remanufacturers are compet‑ing in a market that requires extended ser‑vice life, durability and upgrades make fiscal sense. Also supplying the process to identify the failure and validate the repair supports that expectation. This support is supplied by Sonnax Industries for torque converter, valve body and solenoid components.

To meet the demands of global remanufacturing companies, APRA has started a project named “Remanufacturing Enterprise Group”. You can read more about this project on page 5 in this Edition of ReMatecNews.
During the ReMaTec trade show in June 2013, APRA Europe will be launching its new global “RCS ‑ online consultancy service“. This extranet database provides up‑to‑date infor‑mation by specialized consultants within a range of different remanufacturing areas.
The RCS database service aims at assist‑ing remanufacturers solve small as well as larger problems – quickly and whenever and wherever it’s needed. The service will, there‑fore, include legal, managerial, marketing, logistic, and technical advice, market research and more. Accordingly, RCS will help APRA members find the right company, organiza‑tion, partner or adviser.

As electro‑mobility is becoming a key technol‑ogy for combatting environmental problems, it’s hardly surprising that vehicle manufac‑turers and their part suppliers will focus on technical solutions to comply with the political requirements for the electro‑car parc over the coming years. At the same time, however, when speaking to the media, automotive experts leave no doubt that there is huge technical potential for enabling engines to meet future emission requirements.
Downsizing is one such technical advance. Smaller and, therefore, lighter engines with reduced displacement, fewer cylinders, with one, two or even three turbochargers on top combined with highly sophisticated injection systems leading to a power output of xyz kW/l! ….all this was unimaginable only a few years ago.
What does this mean for independent engine remanufacturers?
Are we facing new threats – or new oppor‑tunities ? We all know that, by and large, the car driver is our “critical” success factor.
It is the way drivers handle their cars and their engines, the way they treat them and the manner in which the car is serviced that leads to engine wear and tear. Consequently, it’s primarily the driver who is the key mover in terms of engine remanufacturing.
Despite sensors and electronic control devic‑es, smaller and high performing engines are much more sensitive to the way they’re han‑dled and treated than before.
Moreover, in my view, high performing engines tend to be less reliable than “con‑servative” engines with lower power output. So downsizing is no real threat to remanu‑facturers. However, it has to be said that we must be prepared to handle, and measure all electronic devices and control units in order to carry out qualified failure analysis and engine repair.
Technical requirementsAs a result, any engine reman workshop that‑wants to have a future in the industry must ensure that its staff possesses the specific skills needed to meet the technical requirements. And herein lies an opportunity.
In addition to downsizing, fuel consumption optimisation by lightweight design is another, rather hidden, technological alternative for automotive engineers. Engine blocks in alu‑minum instead of cast iron, weight‑reduced crankshafts (‑ 20%) and weight‑reduced con rods (‑ 30%) require a strategic change and adjustment in behaviour by the workshops combined with new machine equipment. Alu‑minum‑honing of blocks as well as dynamic balancing for crankshafts and con rods will, indeed, play a stronger role in engine remanu‑facturing in the future. So both these aspects must be regarded as opportunities – providing well trained work‑shop personnel and the appropriate invest‑ment in workshop equipment are available.

At a ceremony in March, Philippe MAERTEN, the International Engine Remanufacturers Association, FIRM, was named “Member of the Year” by FEDERAUTO, the Belgian Federa‑tion for the Automotive Sector. The award was presented to Philippe Maerten, who is also President of the Belgian Engine Remanufactur‑ers Association, due to his commit‑ment to the promotion of remanu‑facturing, which has resulted in the recognition of remanufacturing by European institutions. Philippe Mae‑rten has also actively contributed to the development of the definition of remanufacturing as adopted by the main remanufacturing associations.Besides the Member of the Year Award, FEDERAUTO presented awards in the following categories: Young Manager Award, Enterprise of the Year Award, Green Award, Human Resources Award and a Spe‑
cial FEDERAUTO Award.FEDERAUTO’s membership comprises some 15,000 automotive enterprises in Belgium comprising 85,000 employees and a turnover of 35 billion euro.
The ceremony took place in the prestigious Auto World Museum in Brussels in the pres‑ence of 500 guests, including Monsieur Mel‑chior Wathelet Jr., the secretary of state in charge of Environment, Energy and Mobility, secretary of state Monsieur Herman de Croo, Monsieur Melchior Whatelet Sr. and the Gov‑ernor of the province of Namur Monsieur Denis Mathen.

State-of-the-art reman lab atGolisano Institute for Sustainability
In mid‑April, the American Remanu‑facturing Industries Council (RIC) and the Golisano Institute for Sustainability (GIS) in New York State hosted an important event for leaders in the remanufacturing industry. The venue was chosen because of the long‑time connection between RIT and Institute Director Nabil Nasr and the remanufacturing industry.
Featuring discussions on how to grow the industry and its companies as well as on the latest developments in trade policies affecting remanufacturing, the event gath‑ered more than 60 executives. Attendees also toured the new state‑of‑the‑art GIS head office and the remanufacturing laboratories.
A main item on the agenda centered on how remanufacturers can overcome obstacles that stand in the way of remanufacturing, such as government regulations and restrict‑ed or limited access to foreign markets. Public
perception that reman products are of lower quality because they are remanufactured also remains a concern, the debate revealed.
“There is this misconception that what we manufacture is some broken‑down used thing,” said Derek Guest, Executive Director of the Remanufacturing Industries Council Inc. “Remanufacturing means the complete dismantling of a device, replacing all consum‑able components, such as seals, gaskets and O‑rings.”
Guest said the council needs to educate the general public and government policy‑makers about remanufacturing.
“There’s a big distinction between remanufactured and reused, the most impor‑tant being that it comes with a warranty if it’s remanufactured,” Guest said.
The UK’s Federation of Engine Remanu‑facturers (FER) is taking a 22‑strong party of delegates to Europe’s largest automotive remanufacturing exhibition, as part of its 75th anniversary celebrations.
Federal Mogul and TT Automotive are included among the supplier members mak‑ing the trip to The Rematec Show, in Amster‑dam (16‑18 June).
Remanufacturers of engines, brake cali‑pers, turbo chargers and ECUs are typical of the kind of specialists manning the stands. Major component suppliers with remanufac‑turing activities will have a strong presence. For example, Robert Bosch and ZF are among the exhibitors.

That’s a question currently being considered by the U.S. Defense Department in Washington. The department is investigat‑ing the feasibility of extending the service life of US’s aging Minuteman 3 intercontinental ballistic missiles instead of replacing them
with brand new nuclear‑armed ballistic mis‑siles.
The 450 Minuteman 3s are expected to last through 2030, but might be retained longer if they can be further refurbished, sen‑ior Pentagon officials said at a recent senate hearing. The weapons were first deployed in 1970 and sit on alert in underground silos at three different bases in Montana, North Dakota and Wyoming.
The Air Force, which fields and main‑tains the missiles, is “very carefully analyzing exactly how the current system is degrading, so that they have a much better understand‑ing of how they might extend the life of the ICBMs,” Madelyn Creedon, assistant Defense secretary for global affairs, told the Senate Armed Services Strategic Forces Subcommit‑tee.
Which option ultimately is selected, according to experts, might come down to a question that many automobile owners would find familiar: Does it make more sense to continue to operate an old design with swapped‑out parts and upgrades, or to invest instead in a new system with more up‑to‑date design efficiencies that could be easier to maintain in the long run?
