CLASS OBJECTIVES AND CONTENTS

• Main Objective:

You will increase your knowledge and use of the English language in

general in order to succeed in different working areas and achieve the B1

level. Individual and collaborative practice in the four language skills:

listening, speaking, reading, and writing will help you strengthen your

overall abilities and your performance on the TOEIC exam, specifically

increasing your vocabulary.

Specific objectives

• Listening: Understand the main points of clear standard speech on familiar

matters regularly encountered at work or school; understand the main point

of radio or TV programs on current affairs or topics of personal or

professional interest.

• Reading: Understand texts that consist mainly of high frequency every day

or job related language, and understand the description of events, feelings

and wishes in personal letters.

• Speaking: without any preparation, participate in a conversation dealing

with topics that are familiar, of personal interest, or pertinent to everyday

life, for example family, hobbies, work, travel, and current events. Connect

phrases in a simple way in order to describe experiences and events,

dreams, hopes and ambitions, give reasons and explanations for opinions

and plans, narrate a story or film and describe reactions.

• Writing: Write texts related to topics which are familiar or of personal

interest, personal letters asking for information, apologizing, or describing

experiences and impressions.

ACTIVITIES

1) Review contents and activities in class (Textbook contents & TOEIC)

4) Online activities (as homework or done at a Lab Session –on Tuesdays

5) Oral activities: class discussions, recordings & role-plays

6) Writing: Write blog entries and short texts

7) Reading and Listening journal on their personal blog: Every week

students will have to post a reading or listening with their summary +

glossary + image to illustrate it.

EVALUATION

GRADING BLOCK BREAKDOWN

There will be two grading blocks or reports and a

final exam.

• First block: 8 January- 20 February.

First Partial Exam: 15 February.

• Second block: 21 February- 10 April

Second Partial Exam: 5 April

- Block exam:

Grammar, reading, listening and vocabulary (40%)

Speaking (10%)

Writing (10%)

The final grade will be calculated following the scale below.

“NA” (No acreditado) is not a grade, but a status of “standing by”, that is, a student with NA has a

year (“a year of grace”) to get B2.

Once the student gets B2 in the “year if grace”, the NA status will be changed to “A”. (Acreditado).

If the student doesn´t get any of those scores during the following year, the course will have to be

taken again.

• To pass the subject you need more than 70% and get a B1 certificate

in TOEIC Listening and Reading Section.

• Passing the TOEIC with B1 = 31% / Not accomplishing the TOEIC with

B1 = 0%

• If you get a B2 level, you will have 5% extra in your final grade

TEC Points

4 TEC Points = 1 /100 point in your partial grade

TEC Points will be given for:

a) Being the 1st one in finishing an assignment correctly

b) Being the best speaker in an oral activity.

c) Winning review games.

d) Random assignments*

IMPORTANT ITESM RULES

In order to meet the required standards established by ITESM, we

need to follow these rules and regulations, you can find these on the

“Reglamento General para alumnos”.

1. During the semester you are allowed to have 12 absences. No

absences may be substituted. No more extra absences are

allowed no matter what your average grade is.

2. Attend classes punctually. You are not allowed to come into

class after attendance has been called in the system (SAPPA).

3. Do not interrupt the development of the learning activities.

4. Do not use your mobile and electronic devices during classes

unless they have been required by the professor.

5. If you need extra help, please make an appointment for a

tutoring session.

IMPORTANT ITESM RULES

6. Do not carry out activities that are not related to the class.

7. Bring the necessary and required materials.

8. Do not damage the classroom furniture and facilities.

9. Contribute to the promotion and maintenance of the cleanliness.

10. Do not infringe the copyright by plagiarizing or copying.

teaching-learning process and attempt against the ITESM order,

prestige and people’s rights will be analyzed and penalized by

the professor. The penalizations could range from a warning to

missing the right to attend a class.

Students will be asked to leave the room with the

corresponding absence mark in the following

situations:

Disrespectful behavior (verbal aggressions,

interrupting the lesson)

Not bringing the material to perform the assigned

activities.

Using electronic communication equipment while the

group is working on a different activity

Using Spanish continuously and for basic/everyday

interactions.

EXPECTATIONS

• Follow the ITESM rules.

• Express yourself in English.

• Participate actively during classes.

• Help your partners with their learning.

• Do your assignments on time and with good quality.

• Keep a good communication by the means we have agreed (face-to-

face, email, Remind app, tutoring sessions, Facebook group- not

messenger!- and Skype sessions).

• Express your questions and ask for help if it is necessary

*You may take a workshop to get ready for your TOEIC exam
