Made Ground – dark brown, slightly gravelly, slightly

clayey SAND. Gravel is fine to coarse flint, brick and clay

roofing tile with occasional slate, charcoal and asbestos

fragments

The coarser made ground was generally encountered

along the line of the access road, farm yard and under

former building footprints. Elsewhere surface deposits of

asbestos cement board/drainage pipe were identified

over highly organic topsoil.

Development Requirements

Opportunity to retain suitable material on site

Fill areas such as

Building footprint

Carpark

Design Constraints

Engineering requirement for a ground bearing slab, ruled out the placement of material beneath building footprint– Type 1 fill required.

Drainage requirement for soakaway restricted the fill area of the carpark for fibre impacted fines.

Site Works –

Delivering the strategy on site

Adopt common strategy to

satisfy both reuse and off site

disposal demands

Site walkover and hand pick all

visible surface deposits

Strip site in a defined sequence to

minimise cross contamination

Moving from low risk to high risk

Localised caches / concentrated hotspots were identified, isolated to start, then treated at source as far as possible.

Excavated soils only screened once the bulk of the asbestos removed.

The stock piles were placed within their

own risk areas to further reduce the

risk of cross contamination

The clean/low risk soils stripped from

the green/paddock area, were retained

on site as topsoil, subject to validation

sampling

The medium and high risk material was

screened under controlled conditions,

hand picked to remove asbestos

Elvanite provided a wide

range of documentation to

assist with the validation

reporting. This included:

Risk assessments

Method statements

A daily site diary

Haulage tickets

Waste disposal paperwork

Air monitoring reports
