the “Dixie Hour” on KSDS-FM.Alan Adams played with a wide

variety of performing groups, fromhis own New Orleans Wanderers to ajazz combo led by pop music star LeonRedbone . More recen t ly , heperformed locally with Dixie Express, the Heliotrope Ragtime Orchestra, andthe Elktones — at the El Cajon ElksLodge #1812, where Alan was amember for many years.

In many ways, the San DiegoFestival has been a family affair. Hiswife Joan was the Secretary of theSociety at the very beginning and hasrun the Information Center at theFestival ever since. Alan’s sons grewup at the Festival, and Bill and Ed —as well as Al’s grandchildren —continue to be involved.

To honor Alan during the Festival, there will be a number of tribute setsplus a two-hour jamfest on Saturdayevening.

Here are some reminiscences fromhis friends among the many musicians, jazz fans, Festival attendees andAFCDJS officers, directors and boardmembers who admired him....

~ ~ ~ ~ ~I knew Al Adams mainly as the

Festival Director and a musician. We’d see each other at other Festivalsand Al and Joan have been to ourhome for a Jazzy Party.

It was always a great Festival thatAl and Joan and others put on, butthere were, of course, glitches. I wasa lways impressed when , undercircumstances that would cause othersto panic, Al was always calm andcollected.

Because he was a musician herealized that if the musicians are happythe audiences will be happy and theFestival will be a success. We willmiss him!

Chet JaegerNight Blooming Jazzmen

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ I couldn’t have started the DixieHour at KSDS 88.3 FM in June of 1981without his and Alan Totman’s help.We didn’t have enough Dixieland/

Trad Jazz albums in the station’slibrary to keep a show going backthen, so the men graciously allowedme to borrow from their collectionsuntil the station’s library finally got abetter collection of its own. The jazzcommunity in San Diego was blessedfor many years by Alan Adams!

Jean Ann Frazier-Lee, Seattle, WA

I only met Alan twice, but in thosetwo short meetings, he made aprofound impact on me. It is an honorto have been able to meet with himand play a few tunes with him. Trulya kind man who focused on helpingthose around him.

I was playing regularly with IraCobb and Jazzbo at the Bourbon StreetWest in Solana Beach when Al cameby to sit-in with his trombone for our4th set on Sept. 27, 1980. By April of1981, Al and I were both playingregularly with Ira so when TubamanJim Eakle, owner of the Grand SlamSaloon, wanted to put a band togetherto play at Padres’ games, he got Iraand Al and me, p lus FrenchyLaVesque on bass drum. The GrandSlam Dixie Band auditioned at aPadres-Angels exhibition game onApril 6, 198l, and we were hired toplay at home games, alternating withthe organist, on a regular schedulethrough the World Series here in 1984.We always played The Star SpangledBanner on the field, Take Me Out tothe Ball Game at the seventh inningstretch, and other Jazzy tunes duringthe games. And, that was the start ofa lot of great gigs with Al.

Howie NielsonSan Diego

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Alan sure did a lot musically. Not tobe forgotten, and what I reallyenjoyed, was his radio program andhis great band — the New OrleansWanderers.

Bob AndersenSan Diego

My introduction to Al came onJan. 16, 1997 when I showed up at theTown & Country Hotel for my firstSan Diego Jazz Camp experience as astudent. Al made us all feel welcomeat the camp and quickly put us at easewith the self-imposed high-pressureenvironment. He was helpful andinsp i ra t iona l to us a l l wi thoutprejudice. Since that time, I have hadthe pleasurable experiences of makingmusic with Al at every Jazz Campsince 1997, all of his Swing Camps, many of his jazz workshops, andseveral of his paying gigs. I learned alot from Al — about trad music andother things.

My most memorable thoughtsabout Al come from our experiencestogether at the 2010 New Orleans JazzCamp. I was there as a student and he

was there as a guest observer-consultant to the fledgling NewOrleans jazz camp staff. Al participatedin every class session as a trombone-playing student and made every after-hours jam session that I participatedin. He played his horn at PreservationHall, Fritzell’s, the steamboat Natchez, the Palm Court Café and was on stageat the 2010 Satchmo Summer Fest inthe French Quarter. He played hisheart and soul out during that hotAugust week and I’m thankful that Iwas there to see, hear and be a witnessto it all.

Jay RiceSan Clemente

~ ~ ~ ~ ~When our trombone player decided

it was too far to travel from Oceansideto La Mesa every Wednesday to playwith Dixie Express, Alan said he wouldlike to fill the vacancy. We were elatedbut a little concerned. How would hefit in with a “burger house” band? Weneed not have worried. He was alwayssupportive and helpful. If the rhythmstarted to slow down or speed up, hewould reach into his bag of tricks andbring out the wooden clappers andbring us back in line.

John ContrerasDixie Express

~ ~ ~ ~ ~Alan will be deeply missed. He was

truly a pleasure to work with.Estrella Munguia,

~ ~ ~ ~ ~Alan’s mi l i t a ry background

resulted in two of his most admirablequalities — Dedication and Deter-mination. One event in particularillustrates how Alan was ready tocomplete any mission and to makesure that it was done correctly....

Several years ago, Alan and theNew Or leans Wanderers wereengaged to play a concert in GreenValley, Arizona. The jazz societywhich hired the band wanted Alanand Katie Cavera to warm up theaudience before the concert byplaying a tuba-banjo duet in the lobbyof the performing arts center. The afternoon of the concert, ourhosts took the band to dinner at arestaurant that must hold a world

record for excruciatingly slow service. Before most of the band had evenreceived a salad, the hour for the pre-concer t warmup was rap id lyapproach ing . F ina l ly , Alan ,abandoning any hope of receiving anentree, excused himself from the tableand left for the concert venue withJoan. Just as he left, several of theentrees arrived. As we wolfed downthe food, I double-checked thedirections to the venue with our host.As soon as Katie finished eating, wehustled to my car and started out forthe performing arts center...exceptthere was one wrong turn in the set ofdirections we had been given. Afterwhat seemed like an eternity of drivingthe wrong way and a frenzied inquiryfor directions at a gas station, wefinally got on the right track. As we pulled up in front of theper forming a r t s cen te r , Ka t ieunpacked her banjo and dashed forthe front door. We were bothconcerned that Alan, l ike manymusical acquaintances, would be

pacing the floor, waiting impatientlyfor the banjoist’s arrival and fumingover the delay. However, as Katieflung open the lobby door I heard thesound of a solo tuba, playing “WhenYou’re Smiling!” Dedication andDetermination...Nothing could stopAlan Adams from starting the gig ontime!!!

Hal SmithFormer AFCDJS Assistant Director

~ ~ ~ ~ ~“It comes from his Soul.” I love

that quotation! It encapsulates whatAlan Adams was all about. Very activein the San Diego/Southern Californiamusic scene, Alan played terrifictrombone and tuba and had performedwith a ton of the leading Dixielandgroups. Plus, he was active in a numberof music and jazz education-orientedorganizations. What Alan did in musiccame from deep within his being.

Alan, always pushing me to play mybest. He truly cared about spreadinghis love of music to the next generationof musicians and I will always bethankful for the time I spent with him.

JP BalmatMission Bay HS

~ ~ ~ ~ ~Alan was always a great friend and

supporter of jazz. I was trying toexplain to someone the other day howimportant traditional jazz music wasto him. Not only was he a strongadvocate for the jazz educationprogram in San Diego, but when heheard that they were going to try andstart a jazz camp in New Orleans, heopened up our camp to them and gavethem all the help he could.

He was completely focused on thecontinuation of the jazz traditions thathe loved so much whether he was herein San Diego or in New Orleans givinghis advice and years of experiencefreely and unselfishly.

I always enjoyed sharing the stagewith him, too. There were times whenI’d have to play with a pick up groupand when I saw him come waltzing inwith his tuba, I knew the rhythmsection would be ok. And I used tolove playing with him in the New

Orleans Wanderers which he led ontrombone. It was always a real treatfor me when he would sing. He had acertain style to his singing that justalways made me smile. I’m going tomiss him so much at the San DiegoFestival and at the San Diego JazzCamp. It really won’t be the samewithout him.

Katie Cavera~ ~ ~ ~ ~

My family will miss him. He inspiredmy boys to play Dixieland music. Trulya wonderful man.

Bill Barnsley~ ~ ~ ~ ~

My absolutely favorite thing aboutAl Adams was he always showed upfor gigs with a passion to play. Itdidn’t matter if it was 6am for a cold, outside TV gig to promote the Festival,a non-paying charity event that tookall afternoon in the hot sun, or aspecial gig at the Mississippi Room.He loved to play and always seemedto be having a good time.

Last November, he didn’t want tomiss out at the 31st Annual Festival,so he arranged to sing a little dittywith Heliotrope called “He’d have toget under - get out and get under.”Alan loved his jazz.

Myrna GoodwinAFCDJS Secretary

In 1924 he began a 10-yearresidency with the popular Ted Lewisorchestra, a period when he had feweropportunities to play his kine of jazzbut he did learn “showmanship”techniques. He also made a trip toEurope, one of the highlights of hisstay.

By 1934 he was back with anothermaster showman, Louis Prima, at theFamous Door on New York’s famed52nd Street. By 1936 he becamevirtually the “house trombonist” atNick’s in Greenwich Village, where heplayed with the various bands, led bydifferent leaders (Sharkey Bonano wasthe first) but with pretty much thesame musicians — Pee Wee Russell,Eddie Condon, Joe Sullivan, GeorgeWettling, Jimmy McPartland, BudFreeman, Bobby Hackett and alwaysBrunis.

He made his first serious side-tripout of Nick’s in 1939 when he joinedMuggsy Spanier’s Ragtime Band inChicago’s Hotel Sherman, but the bandreturned to Nick’s for two monthsbefore disbanding. During that time(in Chicago and New York) Muggsy’sband cut the famous “Great 16”Bluebirds.

After Spanier, Brunis’ travels tookhim to Child’s restaurant with ArtHodes and Rod Cless, then back toNick’s (’41-’42), then another three-year stint with Ted Lewis (’43-’46). Helived briefly in Mobile, Alabama, played at Chicago’s Brass Rail, waswith Eddie Condon from ’47 to ’49,then back to Chicago’s Club Elevenfrom 1951-1959.

In the late ’50s and early ’60s hegigged with many bands, leading hisown band in Madison and Cincinnatiand in the late ’60s. despite a seriousillness, he continued to define the roleof a trombone in Dixieland ensemble. In 1968 he played at the New OrleansJazz Festival with Art Hodes and in

Monica to San Diego and bought atownhouse not far from the Town &Country Hotel. Being a drummer and alover of jazz, I was told of a placecalled ‘’Tubaman’s.’’

My first visit there, I met IraCobb and his Jazzbo band includingIra Cobb-trumpet, Al (Mad Hatter)Adams-tuba, Howie Neilson-banjo,Roger Twedt-trombone, and SamLipman-clarinet. I was allowed to sitin for a few tunes, and that was the

1970 he was at the Manassas JazzFestival. He died in 1974.

Brunis’ robust style, his ensemblework and his humor endeared him tojazz fans and musicians alike and hisrecords are legion — Deccas withSharkey Bonano and Wingy Manone, the g rea t Span ie r Blueb i rds ,Commodores with Eddie Condon, theWild Bill Davison/Brunis sessionsand others. Burnies or Brunis —whatever name you called him — callhim a great jazzman.

New Orleans-born Georg Bruniswas one of the first white tromboniststo develop the a r t of “ ta i lga tetrombone,” epitomized by Kid Ory.Originally known as George ClarenceBrunies, he changed the spelling ofhis name upon the advice of anumerologist.

Brunis, born in 1900, came from amusical family. His brothers, Albert(Abbie), Merritt and Richard playedtrumpet. Another brother, Henry, wasa trombonist; his father was a violinist;his mother played piano and his twosisters played guitar.

His first musical experience waswith Jack (Papa) Laine’s band, playingupright alto and drums as a child, butswitched to trombone when he wenton a job with Laine’s son, Alfred. Theband was known as “Panzy Laine and

his Wampas Cats” and the trombonistdidn’t show up, so Brunis was askedto play trombone. He faked it andcontinually faked it from then on.Brunis never learned to read musicbut he was blessed with a musical earthat told him the right notes andharmonies.

During his teens he played a gig inBucktown on Lake Ponchatrain. Itwas a roadhouse called Brunning’sand across the road was another placecalled Martin’s where the legendaryclarinetist Leon Rappolo was playing.

The two became friends. In 1919 he was summoned to

Chicago by trumpeter Paul Mares, thenplay ing wi th Joe “Ragababy”Stevens’ band and Georg and hisbrother Abbie joined the band atChicago’s Campbell Gardens. Shortlyafter that he joined pianist ElmerSchoebel at the Blatz Palm Garden. Itwas there that he first met MuggsySpanier and the two forged a longmusical alliance.

The next year Georg found himselfon the S t reckfus s teamboat“S.S.Capitol,” playing the Mississippiriver, where he once again hooked upwith Rappolo. He also met a youngcornetist of considerable talent — BixBeiderbecke. After the boat trip, theband, with Schoebel on piano, Rappoloon clarinet, Mares on trumpet, JackPettis on C-melody sax, Frank Snyderon drums, Louis Black on banjo andSteve Brown on bass, opened at theFriar’s Inn in Chicago where they weredubbed the “Fr ia r ’ s Soc ie tyOrchestra.” After Schobel left, MelStitzel came in on piano and BenPollack took over on drums and theband changed its name to the more-
