Here at CP Rochester, the past few months have been marked by happiness, sadness, growth, and opportunity.

All of us were saddened by the passing of a longtime friend and advocate Mr. Harold Augustin on May 23. Beloved by generations

of children and families, the namesake of the Augustin Children’s Center dedicated his life to the needs of his son, Skip, and other children with disabilities. Mr. Augustin did so much for so many. He helped create the organization which would turn into CP Rochester. We have so much more to say about this great man on page 3.

Thanks in large part to Mr. Augustin’s legacy, I am pleased to announce that as of December 31, 2014, CP Rochester and Happiness House have officially incorporated under a parent corporation called Ability Partners, Inc. Our two agencies are on track to enhance already great programs in service to so many in our area.

On the heels of celebrating the Happiness House CP Rochester partnership, I welcome the opportunity to serve as the new CEO of Rochester Rehabilitation. In addition, key senior leaders from Happiness House and CP Rochester join me in assuming leadership positions at this agency. You can read more about this partnership on page 10.

Finally, I am very pleased to announce that CP Rochester has exceeded expectations with regards to our annual 5K Run for Fun event. Our agency played host to 500 runners, walkers, and rollers at the 10th annual Run for Fun on May 9. Thanks in very large part to our corporate underwriters, we raised $47,000 which will directly benefit the adults and children who seek services from CP Rochester. I am thrilled at the support our agency receives from such wonderful partners and supporters.

As we move into the second half of 2015, CP Rochester continues to grow and enhance services. From new clinical space for therapeutic treatments, to expanded preschool classes teaching children of all abilities, our agency serves as a lasting reminder of our humble beginnings and our bright future.

Sincerely,

Mary Walsh BoatfieldPresident

Summer 2015 The Voice 3

Remembering our Friend Harold C. Augustin, Sr.How do you sum up a long life? Harold Augustin would always say, “I’ve had a beautiful life.” It was not a perfect or carefree life, but it was a beautiful one. He, and so many of his generation, certainly knew adversity. Harold graduated from Madison High School in 1936 during the midst of the great depression, and then enlisted in 1943 to serve in the US Army during World War II. But Harold also knew great joy—in his marriage to June in 1943, and the birth of their son Skip in 1944.

Harold and June were devoted parents. Following Skip’s diagnosis with cerebral palsy in 1945, the Augustins refused to accept the practice of the day which was to institutionalize a child with a significant disability. Instead, they ensured that Skip was provided the same opportunities other children enjoyed. They raised Skip to have a life of joy—active and fully engaged in the world around him. The Augustins could have stopped at that point, but they didn’t. Instead, they advocated for Skip and all children with disabilities, traveling to Albany and Washington, DC to lobby for disability rights and funding. They worked with area families to found the agency that would come to be known as CP Rochester. June served on the board of directors; Harold designed and repaired adaptive equipment. Together, they hosted countless fundraising events in support of the agency.

In memory of Skip who died in 1990, Harold and June provided significant funds in support of CP Rochester’s

children’s center, which was renamed the Augustin Children’s Center. In memory of his wife June, who died in 2000, Harold made another gift resulting in the children’s playground being named after her. Even in his later years, Harold’s generosity did not end with his philanthropy. He continued to give of his time and talents… reading to preschoolers, attending preschool graduations, and most recently, participating in the dedication of the new adaptive zip-line.

In 2014, in recognition of a life dedicated to the service of others, Harold Augustin was recognized as CP Rochester’s Humanitarian of the Year. Not only did he unfailingly love his son and wife with all his heart, he helped grow CP Rochester by giving tremendous gifts of his time, talent, and treasure to ensure the agency’s success. There can be no more fitting tribute to a life well-lived than this. Thank you, Harold.

Sincere thanks and appreciation to Harold’s niece Janet Andrychuk-Tedesco for her contributions to this article.

Harold, Skip, and June

5K Run for Fun Ambassador — Patrick HurleyCP Rochester’s 2015 5K Run for Fun Ambassador, Patrick Hurley, was born the ninth of 10 children. His diagnosis of Down Syndrome has not stopped Patrick from leading a full and happy life. He grew up in Mendon and participated in programs at the ARC of Monroe and attended school through BOCES in Fairport. Currently, Pat lives at a CP Rochester residential home and attends day programs through the ARC of Monroe and CP Rochester.

Pat is very busy—he is an active member of the Brighton Kiwanis Aktion Club, attends programs at Edison Tech, writes with U of R Writing Fellows in the Inspiration Project, and is always on the go with his family. Pat began running to be like his brother who was a runner. Each week Pat’s family members take him to the gym where he lifts weights, swims, and runs on the treadmill. Patrick Hurley is CP Rochester’s 2015 Run for Fun Ambassador because of his dedication to running and overall good health.

Special ThanksThanks to the dedication and efforts of news anchor Pat Taney, WHEC-TV Channel 10 was the Media Sponsor for the 5K Run for Fun. In addition to promoting the Run on his Rochester in Focus TV show, Pat arranged for dozens of promos to air for several weeks, helping to boost community awareness and increase the number of participants. Pat also served as emcee of the Run!

New Presenting Sponsor for the Run Special thanks go to Dee Mosteller of The Lilliputian Foundation, and her husband Henry Simon. The Lilliputian Foundation was created as a way for Dee and Henry to provide small grants that make a big

difference to organizations like CP Rochester. Named in honor of their dog, Lilliput, or ‘Lilli’ (who struggles with physical disabilities), The Lilliputian Foundation has been a welcomed contributor to the agency. More important, is the friendship they have fostered with CP Rochester, volunteering their time and energy in support of the agency’s mission.

Zip Line Project Goes from Dream to Reality in Under One YearMay 15, 2015 was supposed to be Will Katawazi’s 6th birthday. Due to his passing in June 2014, his family did not focus on celebrating his birthday in the traditional sense. Instead, they joined a hundred other supporters of CP Rochester in dedicating a new zip line in Will’s memory on the playground of the Augustin Children’s Center.

Will was a preschooler at CP Rochester when he passed away unexpectedly three days before his graduation last year. His parents, Al and Heather Katawazi, wanting to capture Will’s sense of adventure, worked alongside CP Rochester to help plan, fund, and construct a new piece of play equipment that

embodied all of who Will was—the ZipKrooz. The first of its kind in Western New York, the ZipKrooz safely ‘zips’ kids of all abilities across its 50-foot rail and back again. CP Rochester purchased a model with two rails—one designed for children without physical limitations, and one for children with physical limitations.

Over $47,000 was raised to help fund this major project on the grounds of CP Rochester. Thanks go to dozens of individual donors as well as the following generous organizations that made this possible: YMCA of the USA, the Al Sigl Community of Agencies and the Al Sigl Sports Committee, the Hafener Charitable Foundation, The Lilliputian Foundation, Ronald McDonald House Charities Global, and Ronald McDonald House Charities of Rochester.

A Very Special Gift Each day, when Al and Heather Katawazi brought their son Will to preschool at CP Rochester’s Augustin Children’s Center, they would admire the artwork on display in the halls. Will’s favorite painting was of a

bright, colorful flower painted by one of the participants in our Day Habilitation art program, Ramon Rivera.

With Will’s unexpected passing in June 2014, Ramon’s painting took on even more of a special meaning to Al and Heather because it reminded them of their son. Ramon heard how much the painting impacted the family and generously gave his artwork to Al and Heather in memory of Will.

$12,500 Gift to Shared Ski Adventures and Augustin Children’s CenterThank you to the Al Sigl Community of Agencies’ Sports Committee for gifting CP Rochester a $12,500 grant to be used for enhancements to the Augustin Children’s Center playground (and help purchase the ZipKrooz), as well as for Shared Ski Adventures.

Mary Walsh Boatfield attended an Al Sigl Community of Agencies’ Sports Committee luncheon in early 2015. The purpose of the luncheon was to provide the Sports Committee grant recipients such as CP Rochester the opportunity to share information with Committee members regarding the programs these grant awards support.

Metro Mattress Donates Beds to RespiteSeveral years ago, Metro Mattress initiated a program in a desire to give back to the community. Their goal is to assist organizations in helping people to meet ‘one of life’s most basic needs—a decent set of bedding to provide a person in need with a comfortable night’s sleep.’

Recently, individuals seeking services from human services organizations in the Rochester area benefited from this charitable initiative, including individuals at CP Rochester. Three twin beds with frames were delivered to CP Rochester’s Free Standing Respite facility on Pinnacle Road. The beds will be stored on-site, and as individuals residing with CP Rochester have the need for a replacement bed, one will be available to them at no cost.

Shared Ski Adventures Gifted $1,000The Board of Trustees of the Morgan Stanley Foundation recently gifted $1,000 to CP Rochester’s Shared Ski Adventures (SSA) program on behalf of the SSA volunteer efforts of David B. Kotalik, Vice President of Morgan Stanley and his wife, Denise. SSA is an adaptive, learn-to-ski program that enables individuals with disabilities to participate in downhill skiing at the Swain Ski Resort. Staff from CP Rochester’s Recreational Services Department, along with trained volunteer instructors, make the dream of skiing a reality for so many. Last season, 37 instructors taught 18 very eager and happy Shared Ski Adventures participants. Students come from all over western New York including, Monroe, Allegany, Livingston, and Chemung counties.

CP Rochester Receives $3,500 Grant from Jim Kelly’s Charitable Foundation CP Rochester’s Augustin Children’s Center is the recipient of a $3,500 award from the Kelly for Kids Foundation. These funds were used to purchase preschool classroom equipment needed to meet the needs of the additional 36 preschoolers being served as part of the recent service expansion.

Established by Jim Kelly following his retirement from the Buffalo Bills, the Kelly for Kids Foundation is committed to serving disadvantaged and disabled youth in Western New York. Since being established in 1986, the foundation has distributed nearly $4 million dollars to nonprofits serving children with special needs.

$800 Gifted to Augustin Children’s CenterCP Rochester’s Augustin Children’s Center recently received an $800 donation from the Genetaska Club of Rochester, Inc. The club is devoted to educational and charitable endeavors. It raises funds through auctions, card parties, bake sales, and other initiatives.

In Summer 2015, CP Rochester’s Augustin Children’s Center preschool opened two new classrooms designed to serve 36 additional preschoolers with and without disabilities. The $800 gift was used to purchase some of the equipment needed to outfit these newest preschool classrooms.

CP Rochester and Happiness House receive $18,750 for Partnership EffortsCP Rochester and Happiness House, as subsidiaries of Ability Partners, Inc., are the recipients of an implementation grant award in the amount of $18,750. This grant was made possible through the SeaChange-Lodestar Fund for Nonprofit Collaboration which was established in 2009 to make grants that encourage and support mergers, acquisitions, joint-ventures, and other types of formal, long-term collaborations between nonprofits. Since its inception the fund has evaluated about 275 funding opportunities and funded more than 65 transactions throughout the United States and Canada.

The grant award will be applied to costs associated with such activities as engaging a Transition Project Coordinator, development of and/or updating public media resources, and beginning to address intra-agency IT needs.

2014 Elks MusicFest Proceeds Benefit Autism ServicesMr. John Baron from the Rochester Elks Lodge #24 presented a $3,325 gift generated

CP Rochester and Happiness House Receive Large State GrantsCP Rochester and Happiness House are the recipients of two OPWDD Balancing Incentive Program (BIP) funding grants worth more than $800,000. This was a very competitive grant process; with fewer than half of all applications being granted an award.

The $224,785 CP Rochester award supports an initiative to be undertaken by CP Rochester, Al Sigl Community of Agencies and Epilepsy-Pralid, Inc. Together, these three organizations will work to create a collaborative community housing model for the development of affordable, non-certified, integrated, community housing.

The $592,900 Happiness House award supports four initiatives that will greatly benefit both agencies:

• Complete activities related to the establishment of Ability Partners, Inc. and additional activities related to the longer-term alignment of both agencies.

• Identify and implement a comprehensive Electronic Health Information system for both agencies.

• Expand dentistry and offer primary medical health services within both agencies’ clinics.

• Provide intensive case management training to staff of both organizations.

Both CP Rochester and Happiness House have the solid foundation and expertise to excel in these endeavors. We anticipate success at all levels and look forward to providing greatly enhanced services to adults and children with and without disabilities in the Rochester and Finger Lakes regions.

Rochester Rehabilitation and Happiness House Enter into an Executive Staffing Agreement CP Rochester’s sister agency, Happiness House, has signed an Executive Staffing Agreement to provide senior leadership to Rochester Rehabilitation. CP Rochester President Mary Walsh Boatfield assumed the role of CEO of Rochester Rehabilitation effective March 13, 2015. Patti Cunningham serves as Chief Financial Officer, and Terrie Meyn serves as Chief Operating Officer of the Quality Assurance Department and the Employment Programs and Services. Senior leadership looks forward to working with the employees of Rochester Rehabilitation while continuing their roles at Happiness House and CP Rochester. All three agencies will remain separate entities.

Inspiration Project Inspires Board MemberWritten by Ann Kurz, CP Rochester Board Member and service recipient

Two years ago, when, as a board member, I accepted an invitation to attend the Inspiration Project’s reading, little did I imagine how attending the event would blow my mind. I sat in the audience, with my chin hanging down to my chest, not believing what I was witnessing. What I’d been advocating for and dreaming about for most of my life was happening before my eyes. Inclusion at its finest, inclusion without pretense! Adults with significant disabilities were interacting seamlessly with college students in a community setting. No one was marginalized; no one appeared to have the upper hand.

Unlike other programs that seem to take years to develop and later have somewhat contrived impact, the Inspiration Project, a joint venture between CP Rochester and the U of R, was effortlessly founded five years ago by Latrice Person and Toni Montgomery—two individuals living in a CP Rochester residence—and English Professor Joanna Scott. Each spring semester, adults with disabilities are paired with college students and spend 10 weeks composing and editing creative writing pieces.

The resulting annual anthologies contain delightfully rich works full of humor, imagination, and reflection. However, what floored me were the strong, natural bonds between the pairs that were so readily apparent to the audience. This unique impact of the project sparked the advocate and artist in me. I yearned to not only spread the word about the project’s success but also to experience the collaborative writing process firsthand.

Two years later, as a project participant, I’ve been pushed to hone my writing skills and step out of my comfort zone, tapping into my feelings to compose reflective pieces. I credit my growth in writing to my partnering college student, who not only took an interest in the project but in me as a person. We realized each other’s talents and wisdom and developed a friendship beyond the classroom. And, that’s what’s inspiring about the Inspiration Project. Its true result is much more than an anthology. The final composition affirms human dignity—the genuine acceptance, respect, and mutual appreciation for each other’s lives.

Two Dentists Join the Family Dental CenterTwo new dentists have joined the staff of CP Rochester’s Family Dental Center: Mona Haleem D.D.S, M.P.A. and Adela Guset D.D.S. Dr. Guset earned her degree at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Timisoara, Romania. She also received additional graduate level training and was

a member of the AEGD program at the Eastman Institute for Oral Health in Rochester, New York. Dr. Guset has experience providing personalized oral care to a diverse array of patients. She has also had work on oral neglect published in JADA and Il Dentista Moderno and presented her findings at ACE.

Dr. Haleem a native of the Rochester area, earned her B.A. at the University of Rochester and completed her dental degree at SUNY Buffalo School of Dental

Medicine. She received additional graduate level training at the SUNY Albany School of Public Health. While in Albany, Dr. Haleem completed specialized postgraduate training in the discipline of dental public health at the New York State Department of Health. Additionally, she possesses a Master of Public Administration degree from SUNY Brockport.

Senator Funke Visits CP RochesterRecently-elected New York State Senator Rich Funke visited CP Rochester in February to meet with President Mary Walsh Boatfield, Chief Operating Officer Terrie Meyn, Director of Agency Advancement Lynn Keller, and Board Chair Jeffrey Baker.

After viewing the agency video, the discussion focused on services provided by CP Rochester and Happiness House, the needs of the individuals and families we

serve, and plans for initiatives such as: the expansion of Clinic services; development of non-certified, integrated, transitional housing; and the continued collaboration of CP Rochester and Happiness House as subsidiaries of Ability Partners, Inc.

The visit concluded with Senator Funke inviting CP Rochester to submit a letter to his office explaining the need for transitional housing and the benefits that such housing will bring to young adults living at home or in certified housing who seek to develop the skills necessary to live independently within their communities.

Save the Date for the 2nd Annual Evening of Stars GalaCP Rochester is ramping up for its 2nd Annual Evening of Stars Gala being held on October 10, 2015. Last year’s Gala, held at CP Rochester’s offices, was such an incredible success; the agency is expecting a greater number of guests to attend this year. Because of this, ARTISANworks has been selected as the new venue for the Gala. This venue will add another level of excitement and elegance to the event as our guests enjoy an evening of camaraderie, cocktails, exquisite food (including a new delectable dessert buffet), silent and live auctions, and wonderful entertainment.

Tickets for this Gala event are $100 per person and can be purchased by calling Dave Carro, CP Rochester’s Director of Marketing and Communications, at 585-334-6000 x1322.

Making Wheelchairs SparkleIn May, 12 pharmacy students and one faculty member from St. John Fisher College spent the day at CP Rochester to wash dozens of wheelchairs, tables, chairs, physical therapy equipment, bikes, strollers, and standers. This is the fifth year these dedicated volunteers have helped our agency in this way. As she did last year, Clinic Aide Genevieve Palermo made all the arrangements and coordinated all the volunteers and individuals.

A Wonderful Day of CaringUnited Way’s 2015 Day of Caring at CP Rochester was an incredible success. Over 100 volunteers spent an entire day at multiple CP Rochester sites gardening, spreading mulch, staining picnic tables, cleaning vans and garages, building raised planters, putting on a children’s carnival, and repairing a pergola. Employees from Paychex, Carestream, Harris Communications, Kodak, Nixon Peabody, Biller Till, Amesbury Truth, and Ortho Clinical Diagnostics generously shared their time and talents making CP Rochester a fun and beautiful place.

Our MissionCP Rochester supports individuals of all ages and abilities to determine their own pathway in life. We partner with the individual, their family, and the community to fulfill the individual’s right to live a productive and rewarding life. CP Rochester provides a wide range of quality health, educational, and support services in the greater Rochester area to assist individuals in achieving their goals.

Ways to GiveMany CP Rochester donors choose to give from their immediate assets such as cash and check (or via credit card). In addition to this type of giving, there are a number of creative ways to provide long-term financial support, such as with a ‘legacy’ gift. The goal of CP Rochester’s Legacy Society is to plan for our organization’s future and set the course for a strategic vision which will carry the agency forward. Legacy gifts include bequests, charitable gift annuities, charitable remainder trusts, charitable lead trusts, life insurance, real estate, and others.

Every member of the CP Rochester family has the power to make future change possible. Together, we continue to ensure the long-term sustainability of programs and services for the 2,000 individuals we serve each year. For more information on making an immediate or long-term legacy gift to CP Rochester, call Lynn Keller,

Director of Agency Advancement, at 585-334-6000 x1326 or via e-mail at [email protected].
