What can I do to say “Thank you” To a time so long ago?

What can I do? How can I know?It seems so far from me.

I know that you died;so many have died.

Long years ago you felt the dawn, you saw the sunset glow.

I know that I’m just a child.How’s a child to know?

I have a place to sleep,my family has food to eat.

I can feel safe when I’m walking down the street.How can I know what it means?

Where the poppies grow

and mark the rows.

I try to understand what it is we have gained.

We can be who we are,

We can reach for the stars,we can be anything.

We can follow any god;have a creed or no creed at all.

We can go anywhere we want,have any friends we want.

We can decide for ourselves the truth we want.

These are here for me because of you.
