About NANOCAT Centre
Scope of Research
NANOCAT (Nanotechnology and Catalysis Research centre) is a pTJ incorporated by UM in 2012, a UMCoE. Its mission is to be a world leader in “catalysis and nanotechnology” coining sustainability and green technology. NANOCAT research thrust is deploying catalysis to support energy, chemical synthesis, environment pollution and global warming mitigation as well as designing smart materials as catalyst, sensor, nanocoating, and nanocomposite.
NANOCAT was given a status of HICoE Potential in 2013, in catalysis. The Centre has strived to attain a national status for HiCOE (MOHE) as well as NanoCentre (NNC, MOSTI) with strong support and commitment from Universiti Malaya since. In the last 3 years, 2013 to 2016, it witnessed a pronounced explosion in its productivity in all aspects.

Funding 2016
As a national research centre focused on nanotechnology and catalysis research areas, NANOCAT has come out with a strategic planning in research grant application. With that in mind, the emphasis has been given to five niche areas of NANOCAT which are environmental, smart materials, chemical synthesis and energy. This has been clearly translated to the research grant secured by NANOCAT academic staff, which out of RM3,871,635 total amount of research funding received, 38 % was contributed by Chemical catalysis, 23 % by Environmental catalysis, 23 % by Smart materials and 16 % by Energy catalysis. The focused of research grant sources selection for NANOCAT Research Center in year 2016 is based on the Industrial grant, National Grant, UM Research Grant, and International grant with the amount percentage of 38%, 35%, 23% and 4%, respectively. This brought the total amount of research grant received by NANOCAT Research Center on 2016 is RM 3,871,635. This this amount of funding received, NANOCAT research thrust could progressively developing and serving catalysis and nanotechnology research not only in Malaysia basis but also over the international region.

NANOCAT is highly active in postgraduate supervision and research. These students, both from local and international, serve as important backbone to support the exponential growth of our centre’s research output. For a small number of academic staff of 10, NANOCAT takes pride to attract and supervise 84 postgraduate students (49 PhD and 35 MSc) where 14 of them successfully graduated in 2016 (2 PhD and 12 MSc). 80% of them with CGPA > 3.0 are study in NANOCAT under various financial aids and scholarship. As a global choice of research centre of excellent, 20% of them are international postgraduate students. This is indeed an achievement as part of the effort to promote UM at international level.
Besides postgraduate, NANOCAT also serve as centre of choice as industrial training centre from UM and other local university’s undergraduate students. This is due to the centre’s strong engagement with industrial and the students are benefiting from their training attachment with NANOCAT. In 2016, we received 22 interns [UM (16), UMT (4), UMK (1) and UTAR (1).
As centre of excellent in nanotechnology and catalysis, NANOCAT offered 3 short courses to local and international scientific community which also bring income of RM 3426.90 to the centre in 2016. We will further enhance this training platform in 2017.
