Most recently the CEC has sponsored Great Courses offerings on Riderwood TV during the pandemic. It is desirable that Resident members of the committee have a background as educators, but it is not a requirement. Continuing Education Committee seeking membership nominations By Jack Wachtman Finance Liaison, Resident Advisory Council The Finance Committee of the Resident Advisory Council makes “suggestions with respect to programs, services, activities, amenities, and facilities for the annual budget.” It works closely with members of the Finance Department including Director of Finance Remi Ackerman and Assistant Director Gladstone James. The committee seeks to represent residents’ interests in maintaining a balance of security of deposit, affordability, quality of life, and maintenance of high occupancy. The financial status of Riderwood is reviewed monthly by the RAC Finance Committee sitting with members of the Finance Department. The Committee is composed of residents Carolyn Compton, Pat Davis, Carman Gannitti, Diana Glockner, Angus MacInnes, Diane Matuszak, Bob Phillips, John (Jack) Wachtman (chair), and Suzan Wynne (secretary). Each month the Committee examines a set of six financial documents. These are: 1. Occupancy Trends; 2. Profit and Loss by Natural Expense; 3. Profit and Loss by Line of Business; 4. Statement of Non-Operating Items; 5. Comparative Balance Sheet; 6. Statement of Cash Flows. At the end of each quarter two additional financial documents are provided. These are: 7. A statement of compliance with reporting required by bond holders; and 8. A summary of the status of the restricted funds, which are the Benevolent Care Fund, the Scholarship Fund, and the Staff Appreciation Fund. In examining these financial documents ,particular care is taken to compare the performance each year with the previous month and with the budget for the current year. Any substantial deviation from either is noted and possible reasons considered. Also of special interest is the investment in new capitalized items such as construction of new buildings, refurbishment of existing buildings, and equipment repair or replacement. The Finance Committee membership includes overlap of membership with the General Services Committee, which is useful because much of the major spending, both operating and capital projects, occurs in the General Service Area. Based on study and discussion of these financials, the Finance Committee each month prepares a short (typically about one page) summary report of the current situation, including the following: 1. Operating Results; 2. Non-Operating Results, 3. Cash; 4. Debt; 5. Capital Investment, 6. Occupancy; and 7. Restricted Funds. This report is submitted to RAC and is available to residents both in the notebooks in Community Buildings and by email on RACDOCS. In summary, the operating results are generally strong with an income of about 10% of revenue. The debt level is moderate and debt service measures are much better than conventional minimums. Cash on hand is strong, and major, multi-year maintenance and new facility programs are in progress to insure future competitive position and quality of resident life. Help celebrate this year’s Benevolent Care Fund campaign with song, dance, memories, and more!
