What this presentation is about.

This presentation is going to be about the

findings from the primary and secondary

research I did for a classic game and a

modern game.

What is Research?

Research is finding facts or looking into something

extensively. Research involves finding facts about what

you are looking into.

Primary Research

Primary research is when the researcher does researches

something by actually doing it and not finding information about

it from somewhere else. For an example if you are researching

a game using primary research it cant be taken from anywhere

else, you can play the game yourself and write what you found

in the game itself as research.

I did primary research on The Legend of Zelda – A link to the

past. I looked into the game in depth from the gameplay

mechanics to the story.

What I found

I found out how different classic games from modern

games.

The gameplay feel is really different because of

the engines used.

There is very minimal and only basic animations

used.

Less detailed than modern games.

I played the game my self on a Super Nintendo in order to do the

primary research.

I also did market research for the game and it was very

simple and used real people to represent game

characters. It was all just straight the point letting the

consumers know what's in the game and why they should

buy it.

Market Research

Secondary Research

Secondary research is the most common type of research used in

the industry today, secondary research is using data that is already

processed, Researchers usually look at already created videos, articles

etc. to collect information that they need.

I did secondary research on a MOBA (Multiplayer online battle arena)

called Dota 2. I did secondary research on the game mixed with some of

my own experiences in the game. I explained how the game works in

terms of gameplay mechanics etc. I also explained how the items and

heroes abilities work in the game. Towards the end of my research I did a

survey and got some people to do it to get some statistics on how many

people played the game and actually liked it etc.

Counter picking

The hero you pick will also decide if you win or not. All heroes’

abilities can be countered by other heroes for an example Riki, a

hero who can be permanently invisible until he attacks and then he

we will visible for minimum of 2 seconds. His invisibility would go

away if he is silenced or tracked. Heroes like silencer with his

global ultimate ability to silence everyone in the map and bounty

hunter with his ultimate he can track someone for which would give

his team vision of Riki for some time.

Items on Dota 2Items play a big part in this game, the items you buy in a game will

determine if you and your team will win or not.

Conclusion

In conclusion Researching these games made me view games really

differently than usual. It made me think about how the games work,

how developers made these games and how much research went into

these games.

For an example in Dota 2 the researches had to research what the

consumers liked from Dota 1 and what they didn’t like. So that they

could take out what the consumers didn’t like about Dota 2 leave what

they liked.
