Avoiding Fire Alarms

The fire safety system on res is incredibly sensitive and directly linked to the fire brigade.

The resident responsible for a fire unit(s) call out are required to pay an initial $100 charge.

They are also required to pay a minimum of 50% of the MFB invoice with no negligence (as assessed by

campus life co-ordinator or manager) OR a minimum 100% of the MFB invoice with negligence (as as-

sessed by campus life co-ordinator or manager).

The cost for the MFB to be called out is currently over $2,000.

Please take care with the following to minimise disruption and to ensure the safety of your fellow ressies!:

When cooking:

ALWAYS Open windows

ALWAYS make sure the extractor fan is on

Cook on the back two burners when using a frypan.

(When using the front two burners, the smoke is more

likely to set off the alarm)

ALWAYS use a small amount of cooking spray, not oil.

Do not use aerosol deodorant, hairspray, spray tan or hair straighteners in

your bedrooms. Only use these in the bathrooms of your units

NEVER smoke anywhere inside or near Village units or the MB building.

If a smoke alarm is set off, it will make a high pitch sound. You then have 60 seconds to attempt to disperse

the smoke by:

Turning the appliance off (if applicable)

Opening windows

Putting extractor fan on

Fanning the detector with a tea towel, book or folder

DO NOT open front doors or bedroom doors as this is likely to result in triggering the hallway and bedroom

detectors.

If you are successful, the alarm will reset, the beeping will stop and the fire brigade will not be called.

If you are not successful in clearing the smoke, the system will go into full evacuation mode requiring the

evacuation of all residents and triggering the automatic attendance of the fire brigade.

If ever you hear the evacuation tones, DO NOT assume it is a false alarm. You MUST VACATE IMMEDIATELY.

The evacuation meeting points is: Up on the grass out the front of Building LA

Treat each and every alarm as a real emergency!

Lock-Outs

It is accepted that residents at some time during their stay at the residences

will accidentally lock themselves out of their room.

If this should happen, you will need to go the residences

reception office in order to receive access to your room.

It is not acceptable to chock doors open as this is unsafe

and can cause damage to the door.

If any resident is locked-out of their unit for a third time, they will be charged

$10. They will also be charged $10 for every subsequent lockout.

Deakin University Burwood has a medical centre right on campus! Building

B, Level 2. Please ring for an appointment from your

room phone: 46333 (ask for the medical centre).
