WHAT IS RESILIENCY TRAINING?

For the latest how-to guides, visit https://www.perksatwork.com
CONTEXT
▪ The desired outcome of resiliency training is to develop awareness of our behavior that prevents others giving us the TRUTH. Then to demonstrate practice on DIALING DOWN this behavior.
▪ Research shows that individuals who proactively solicit critical feedback are less inclined to disregard it, and are more likely to hear feedback with less defensiveness and use it for improving performance.
▪ The team of peers is a key element to feeling less alone, and building up our “resilience” in dialing down our signals of not getting truth and the practice in getting truth together.

Resiliency skills equate to
increasing our ability to seek the
”truth”. Individuals who want to
be left alone often have
“eggshells” around them that
affect team dynamics.
Giving feedback to a peer
requires an expenditure of
social capital. It’s that
difficult to give truth (when
not easy to hear). It’s even
harder when we send
signals we don’t want that
feedback.

GETTING STARTED

FACILITATOR TIPS
1. Facilitator/Captain is an active member of the team (i.e. does the exercises and is part
of team) – ideally views self as role model first and foremost for team.
2. Key an eye on the time – mistake is that sessions can go well past an hour because of
lively discussions. Facilitator has role in keeping to schedule (without being task
master) –
3. Keep last 5-10 minutes for feedback IN THE MEETING. Mistake to assume people will
leave feedback after the session. It’s important to get score in the meeting
4. If needed, guide discussions in meeting but be mindful of not coming across as the
“boss”. Try to get everyone to participate but be careful – ultimately team will be
giving feedback to each other. Be mindful of tone and how discussions moving. Be
mindful to not let discussions stretch too long and of side sub-group discussions.
Recommended Setup
▪ Select a group of 8-12 individuals – ideally peers that MOST need resiliency training to start.
▪ Select one individual to be the facilitator (or “captain”) of the peer team
▪ Set aside one hour per week (we have found Thursday mornings to be ideal) for resiliency training
▪ Share context ahead of first session (email, short meeting)
▪ In first session, allow the space for individuals to voice their skepticism, frustration. That is normal (these might be individuals who have highly attuned mechanisms to deflect truth from others).
▪ The worksheet will start to be filled out IN the first session. (vs before).

GROUP FEEDBACK AT OF SESSIONS 3 and 4
8
For the latest how-to guides, visit https://www.perksatwork.com
CONTEXT
▪ At the end of sessions 3 and 4, the last 10 minutes of the meeting is for the group to give feedback (anonymous via the app will increase truth)
▪ Instructions: Give a “2” to the person training the hardest (or hard), a “1” on not training hard or seriously. Along with details/reasons why
▪ At end of session, pull up the leaderboard – this will give an instant ”score” of how someone is training – as indicated by their peers
