Before there were roads in the wilderness area, the best method of transportation was by water.

The early explorer would portage from Leaf Lake to Portage Lake to Donald Lake to Pelican Bay on Otter Tail Lake and be on his or her way through Canada to Hudson Bay.

The first explorers through this area in about 1750 were a Frenchman and an Englishman. They met with a band of Indians on the shore of “Lac de la Queue de la Outer,” which translates roughly to the Lake of the Otter’s Tail.

This is on record in the archives of Congress. Some believe the name derives from the sandbar shaped like an otter’s tail where the Otter Tail River enters Otter Tail Lake. Now, over two centuries later, the otter tail sandbar is still there.

kinship offers after school programs

Kinship of the Perham area has many after school programs. B.r.a.G. (Boys r always Gifted), and G.a.P. (Girls are Powerful) is for girls and boys in grades 7-12 involved in Kinship and/or friends of Kinship. B.r.a.G. meets every second Monday of the month. G.a.P. meets on the second thursday of every month at varying locations from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. dinner is provided.

the purpose of G.a.P. is to give teen girls a voice and access to fash-ion, nutrition/cooking, health and physical fitness trends. Five adult facilitators guide the group.

the Kinship goal is “to improve children’s lives by establishing quality relationships between children and caring volunteers for the purpose of promoting stability, support, friendship and community.”

2012 farm resource guide available at u of M extension

the Farm resource Guide for 2012 is now available at university of Minnesota extension county offices across the state.

this eighth annual publication includes 114 pages of up-to-date information and forms which would be of benefit to those interest-ed or involved in farming, including: custom rates; lease forms, and com-modity price probabilities for corn, soybeans, alfalfa hay, straw, grass hay, hogs and cattle. Other information includes rental rates for various bins and buildings, farmland sales and rents and pasture rental rates.

new this year is information about the last five years of corn and soybean yields by county, for the whole state.

at the end of the guide is a section on feedlot rule high-lights and information on manure agreements and ease-ments, including examples of manure spreading lease and land application agreement forms.

Compact disc or email versions of the guide include interactive lease forms for cash rent and share rent arrangements.

the Farm resource Guide is available for a $25 fee plus postage and sales tax. this fee helps fund contin-ued extension efforts in agricultural business manage-ment, and helps ensure the continued availability of farm resource guides into the future.

to order a copy, contact david Bau, an extension educa-tor based in Worthington, Minn., at [email protected] or 507-372-3906.

If you would like a copy of the Resource Guide, email David Bau at

[email protected] or call 507-372-3906.

if your local fire department or area fire warden does not issue burning permits, and you live in one of the following (a) townships, please call the Dnr forestry office in Detroit lakes at (218) 847-1596.

if your local fire department or area fire warden does not issue burning permits, and you live in one of the following (B) townships, please call the Dnr forestry office in alexandria at (320) 762-7812.

in most cases a permit is required from a dnr Forestry Officer, your local fire department or area fire warden to burn brush or other vegetative materials. during the winter months, a permit is not needed as long as there are three inches of continuous snow cover. Keep in mind, the dnr Forestry department issues burning bans in the spring until vegetation is green and moist.

the dnr Forestry department may delegate authority for the issuing of burning permits to local fire wardens and to some local fire departments. to obtain a burning permit, contact your city fire department, township clerk, or dnr Forestry Officer.

The Perham Turtle Fest is celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2012.

Turtle Fest is a week-long festival that highlights the Perham International Turtle Races with some additional fun, family-friendly activities around town. The races are held every Wednesday in June, July and August, rain or shine, in Turtle Park (near City Hall in downtown Perham).

The turtle races are the highlight of the summer for local residents and visitors from all over.

At the first turtle races in 1978, circles were drawn on the parking lot of the post office and 23 kids showed up. Since 1983, the Perham Chamber has held the turtle races at Turtle Park.

Races start with the turtles in the middle

of a circle, then the judges blow their whis-tles and the turtles are off and running. The first to get outside of the outer circle is the winner, and will go on to compete to be the grand champion of the day.

Participants may bring their own turtle to race, or may borrow one from the Turtle Pit. There is no cost to race, but donations are welcomed to help house and feed the turtles through the year.

All participants in the turtle races re-ceive a goodie bag.

Events for the 2012 Turtle Fest will kick off on Saturday, June 16. There will be games and entertainment for kids, a parade, street dance, competitions, 5K and 10K runs, a medallion hunt, and much more.

For a complete schedule, visit www.perhamlions.com

For more general information, visit www.perham.com.

Built originally as an Episcopal church, this historic building now contains displays and exhibits about the people and places of East Otter Tail County. At the History Museum the past comes alive with early motion pic-tures, photographic essays and inter-pretive exhibits.

The museum is housed in an 1887 his-toric stone structure and the building itself is worth a look.

The museum’s website allows you to search both volumes of the East Otter

Tail History Books, the Register of Births and Deaths in Perham from 1882 to 1900, and an index to the Enterprise Bulletin Newspapers which dates back to 1883. You can also search our collection of Historical Photographs.

The History Museum of East Otter Tail County was one of the first to make local historical records available online. A genealogy lab welcomes visit-ing researchers. The museum has also compiled a record of Finnish language newspapers.

The New York Mills Regional Cultural Center is a place to experience big-time arts and culture in small-town Minnesota. Best known for hosting the “Great American Think-Off,” an annual philosophy debate, the cultural center is much more than that. Each year the center brings to the region a wide variety of artistic culture gener-ally not found in rural Minnesota.

The cultural center is a great place to

attend one of many concerts featuring a host of talented musicians.

Inside the gallery, visitors can find a wide variety of art exhibits, discussion groups, workshops and art classes throughout the year. The center seats about 125 for concerts and provides excellent acoustics for monthly musi-cal performances, including blues, jazz, folk and classical.

The In Their Own Words Veterans Museum opened in Perham in 2006. Several years in the making, the museum features first-hand experiences of area veterans in Europe, Korea, Vietnam and the Middle East and includes exhibits from World War I through the current conflicts in the Middle East.

Featuring audio commentaries, re-dramatiza-tions of events leading up to and during the wars of the 20th Century, and interactive iden-tity kiosks, ITOW is believed to be the only museum of its kind. Excerpts from more than 140 oral histories are included. In addition to exhibits about veterans, there are also displays about the homefront. History comes alive in a very personal way.

ITOW is housed in a renovated VFW Post headquarters and is located at 805 West Main in Perham. Hours are Monday through Saturday from 10 to 5 and Sundays from 1 to 4. General admission is $4 with free admission for all veterans.

More information is available at 218-346-7678 or www.ITOWmuseum.org.
