RESPECT PERSISTENCE RESPONSIBILITY CONFIDENCE newsletter 04 | 16 March 2017 A 40 Mary Elie Street Port Pirie SA 5540 P (08) 8632 0400 F (08) 8632 3195 W www.jpss.sa.edu.au YEAR 8’S THRIVING IN MIDDLE SCHOOL At the start of 2017 one hundred and twenty Year 8 students commenced their secondary education at our school. They entered into a reconfigured Middle School characterised by different timetabling structures, two core teachers delivering a significant component of their curriculum, extra care group time, team teaching, goal setting, a focus on writing proficiency and refurbished learning areas. Generally Year 8 students transition into secondary school comfortably. They enjoy the variation in specialist teachers, the elective choices e.g. Art, Technology, Drama, Music, having a larger peer group and quickly get to know the layout of the school. This year seems to have been exceptional. Year 8’s appear to have embraced the change, are enjoying school and connecting very well with teachers and peers. In the last few weeks I have had the opportunity to be in some Year 8 Maths, Humanities and English classes. On each occasion the bi-fold doors have been open; students have been engaged, some working in small groups, others independently, a few being tutored by teachers, several engaged in focused discussion around learning. It is uplifting to visit or work in these classes where young people are motivated, connected to their learning and embracing school education. When I talk with students there is an overwhelming sense that the transition from primary to secondary school has been highly effective. It is testimony to the work of Kate Tetlow (Middle School Assistant Principal) and the team that lead school open nights, visits to primary school, ‘Taste of High school’ days, class formation processes, Year 8 parent information events. Their work has supported a very positive start to the 2017 school year. ICANBEME

On Friday, March 3, the ICANBME program began for 2017. This

program is a wonderful opportunity offered to young girls at

John Pirie Secondary School, to help them remain connected

with learning and improve their overall well-being.

The program is managed by Uniting Care Wesley Country SA and

delivered by Sam Gill from UCWCSA and Michelle Dennis from

JPSS. The environment is designed to be a safe, non-judgemental

space where the girls can identify and achieve learning and

personal goals, under the guidance of two qualified youth

workers.

In 2017 the program will include:

Group and teamwork activities

Life and career coaching

Accredited Learning - First Aid, Personal Learning Plan (First

SACE Subject)

Structured and purposeful art and craft activities

Training in positive communication techniques

Opportunities to be supported with school tasks

Health and wellbeing activities

Community guest speakers

Preparation for work experience/casual work

A highlight of the first session was guest speaker Catelin

Langsford-Lenartowicz who was a participant in the program in

2016. She spoke to the girls about her experiences in ICANBME

and how they can make the most of the opportunity.

The trainers and participants are very much looking forward to

their ICANBME journey in 2017.
