Additional Before and After School Care Options Recently we have added possible options for Before and After School Care to our website. Some of these providers also hold vacation care. If interested, please follow the link below. https://manlywest-p.schools.nsw.gov.au/supporting-our-students/before-after-school-care/other-external-

before-and-after-school-care-options.html Safety Alert For Child Protection reasons, we ask that parents and carers use the toilets located outside the front office, with or without toddlers. We also ask that if parents change nappies on school grounds that these are taken offsite for disposal.

Ethics in 2019

Are you interested in volunteering to teach Ethics in 2019? No teaching experience is necessary for this position as the role is more about facilitating discussion. Detailed, age-appropriate lesson plans are provided

by Primary Ethics.

Many parents have indicated that they would like their child to attend Ethics classes, however, we do not have enough volunteers to offer classes to all interested students. We currently provide Ethics to interested students in Years 2 - 6. We would like to continue this in 2019 and extend Ethics to students in younger grades.

Please consider volunteering or perhaps have an encouraging word to a community member who you think may be interested.

Becoming a volunteer Ethics teacher is simple:

View Mike McDonnell, a Manly West parent and Ethics teacher, speaking about teaching Ethics.

https://primaryethics.com.au/volunteer/ethics-teacher/ Classes take place at the following times: Years 5 and 6 9:20 - 9:50 Years 3 and 4 10:00 -10:30 Kindergarten, Year 1 and 2 10:40 -11:10

For more information regarding teaching Ethics, please contact our Ethics Coordinator, Lisa Palmer on [email protected] Mrs Wendy Mwanga

2019 Student Leadership Roles

Congratulations to all of the students in Year 5 who nominated for a leadership role for 2019. All students have demonstrated respect and resilience through this process. Thank you to the Year 5 teachers who have supported and encouraged all of our students.

Candy Canes At this time of year students like to give cards and candy canes or similar confectionery to their friends. As Manly West encourages healthy eating, we would appreciate your help by encouraging your child to place any confectionery they receive in their bag to take home.

Christmas Band Concert Once again, our bands have showcased their amazing talents under the guidance of Penny. All bands shared an array of their musical pieces with the odd Christmas Carol featuring. Congratulations to our band students on a wonderful evening. Our talented Year 6 students were presented with trophies in recognition of their achievements. Thank you especially to all our Year 6 students and parents who will be leaving us at the end of

the year. Your support and energy are part of what makes the Manly West Band Program so amazing. Havana Buckley and Patrick Day spoke beautifully as outgoing Band Captains.

Library News Mrs Burke and I hope you have enjoyed reading lots of different stories,

information and books this year! Borrowing has finished for 2018, so please

return all library books as soon as possible. The first classes in K-2 and

the Primary grades who return ALL their library books will win a

class prize! Paying for lost or damaged books also counts as returning your

books. Please see me if you need to check or pay for a missing book. Go on

a big book hunt around your classrooms and homes then return them to the

library to help your class win! Will it be YOUR class?!?!?!?!?!?

This is the last week that our Year 5 Library Monitors will help in

the library at lunch as they are off to camp next week. They have

Kitchen Garden News In the Kitchen Garden this week…

Year 4 in the Garden

Year 4 will be unearthing potatoes this week as well as other garden jobs like building

compost, collecting seeds from crops that are finished, fertilising garden beds with compost and planting seeds

and seedlings of summer crops. They will also be printing Christmas gift wrap using fruit.

Year 5 in the Garden

Year 5J have planted corn, cucumber, zucchini, sunflowers and climbing beans in the wicking bed.

Year 2 in the Garden

Year 2 came for their lesson on the water cycle this week and took a terrarium back to the classroom to make

further observations. These are super fun and cheap to make - an excellent school holiday project or gift for

family and friends.

Kindy Planting

The flowers are already starting to bloom in the Kindy garden we

planted last week. Come and have a look! Please encourage your

Kindies to look after the flowers we planted and not pick them. If

you visit the school over the holidays, please water them.

Can you spare a few hours to help this Sunday?

Whole School Working Bee Sunday 9th

December from 2-4 pm .

We would like as many parents and

students as possible to come and help clear the gardens of rubbish and tidy up the garden

beds around the school. There will also be jobs to do in the Kitchen Garden.

Please bring gloves and long-handled rubbish grabbers if you have them for getting rubbish

from those hard to reach places. RSVP if you can come [email protected].

All help is greatly appreciated.

Summer Holidays Watering Help

Can you help over the holidays with watering the garden? Summer is especially harsh on the Kitchen Garden.

Can you sign up to help water the garden over the holidays? If you will be bringing kitchen food scraps from

home to the school compost bins over the holidays we also ask that you sign up to help turn the compost bins.

Go to SignUpGenius search under my email address for ‘Kitchen Garden Helpers’ and sign yourself up for a day

that suits you.

Summer PSSA Grand Finals

Last Friday was the culmination of our Summer PSSA competitions. Manly West had 4 teams qualify for

the Grand Finals.

The Junior Girl B’s Eagle Tag team were Runners Up in the Grand Final. The final score was 3-2 to Beacon Hill.

The Newcombe Ball B’s won their Grand Final against Harbord, winning the first set, losing the second set then winning the tie break 7-5.

The Junior A’s Boys Eagle Tag team played Harbord in the Grand Final. At fulltime the score was 3-3 so extra

time was required. Manly West scored in extra time to be crowned champions 4-3! This is the first time a Junior

boys Eagle Tag team has won a Manly PSSA competition.

The Senior Boys also played Harbord and in a tight game were victorious 3-2. This is only the second time Manly

West has won a Senior Boys Eagletag competition but the 2nd time in 4 years.

Congratulations to all teams and coaches for a great season.

Mr Steve Byrne
