Director’s Comments Fall is upon us, and it feels great! Not
only do we begin our new fiscal year, but we
also have some of our larger signature events
and activities packed into the next few
months here at the Commission on Aging.
October 15 begins our Medicare Part
D enrollment program. Our staff and trained
volunteers will be meeting with hundreds of
community members helping them to
navigate the process, find the program that
best suits their needs, and in most cases, save
them money. If you have any questions at all, or if you have already
made your selections but would like to have someone go over it with you,
I highly recommend that you call and make an appointment with our
experts. The Medicare Part D Enrollment Program will take place from
October 15 - December 7.
October 27 we will be hosting our annual “Howling Good Time”
Halloween event for the young and young at heart! What a fun activity
for all ages, featuring games, snacks, music and costumes! We hope to see
you here, taking part in the fun with us!
October 12 will most certainly be a bittersweet day for all of us
here at the Commission on Aging – Barb Frankenfield, our In-Home
Services Coordinator will be retiring after serving in her role for 34 years.
Barb is a very important asset to the COA, and she will be so missed. I
am thankful for the short time that I have had the opportunity to work
alongside her and learn from her. Barb has been a champion for older
adults throughout Isabella County, impacting our community as a whole,
in an immeasurable way. While we hate to see Barb go, we are also so
excited for her to have the opportunity to enjoy her retirement to the
fullest with her husband, Joe. Please join us in celebrating Barb with an
open house on Friday, October 12 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in Rooms
B and C, here at the Isabella County Commission on Aging.
Explore Treatment Options for Hip & Knee
Arthritis Arthritis or simply years of use may damage joints, causing
symptoms of pain. If you are experiencing joint pain, stiffness or
swelling that makes it difficult to walk, climb stairs or limits everyday
activity, join Orthopedic Surgeon Michael Moutsatson, DO to learn
about options for relief. Learning about treatment options can ease
anxiety and provide the knowledge necessary to help you make the best
decision possible to improve or maintain your quality of life. Non-
operative management as well as knee and hip replacement surgery will
be discussed.

Why Review Your Medicare
Part D Prescription Plan?
This is the only time each year that all people
with Medicare can join or change their Medicare
prescription drug plan. Even if you like your current
Medicare drug plan, it is strongly recommended that you
review your plan for the upcoming year. You may be able
to save time, money and frustration by choosing a plan with
possibly lower premiums and fewer restrictions.
Here are a few frequently asked questions that may
be able to answer your specific concerns.
How may my plan have changed?
Your current plan may have changed:
The monthly premium
The annual deductible
The co-payments to your pharmacy
The formulary (list of covered medications)
What do I have to do if I decide I want to stay in my
current plan for 2019?
You are not required to do anything. You will stay enrolled
in your current Part D plan unless you sign up for a new
plan. If your plan is no longer renewing its Medicare
contract, you will receive a letter from your plan stating that
it is no longer being renewed and to review other plan
options.
What if I change plans and decide I do not like my new
plan?
Changes can only be made during Open Enrollment
October 15 – December 7 for most people. You will not be
able to cancel the plan until the next Open Enrollment.
Low income beneficiaries meeting certain criteria may
change their plan throughout the year.
What if I did not join a Part D plan when I was first
eligible, but would like to join now?
You can enroll in a plan during the Annual Open
Enrollment. You may have to pay a penalty for enrolling
late.
How do I receive help to compare plans for 2019?
You can call the Commission on Aging at 772-0748,
beginning October 2 to schedule an appointment with one
of our trained volunteer counselors. Sessions are available
for Isabella County residents 60 years of age and older and
are by Appointment Only. There is no cost to the
sessions, although donations to the agency are welcomed.
You can also call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227) or
go to www.Medicare.gov during the Open Enrollment
Period.

Mission Moments SO LONG – FAREWELL –
AUF WIEDERSEHEN – ADIEU
The time has come to say goodbye. It has
been a wonderful run and I have enjoyed it so very
much. It seems like only yesterday when I started
work here. These 34 years have gone by so quickly
and I would like to take this time to say THANK
YOU for giving me this opportunity.
I have met so many great people while
working at the Commission on Aging. Please know
you have helped me to become better at my job and
to provide better service to the community. You
have shared with me much laughter, some tears and
many good times. Thank you to those of you who
have shared so many memories with me.
Thanks also to this wonderful and
knowledgeable staff. This agency has a superb
reputation in this community and in the state
because of the caring and competent staff. We work
well together, which accounts for the good service
we provide to the community. I am certain this
good work will continue after I retire.
I would be remiss if I didn’t also thank the
excellent executive directors under whom I’ve
worked: Kathy House (if you think I didn’t do a
good job, blame Kathy as she’s the one who hired
me), Brenda Upton (we spent 29 years working side
by side. She is the one who worked tirelessly to
pass the Senior Millage to have a new building and
more services for the community) and Jennifer
Crawford (she has been so supportive of my work
and will continue and expand the good work of the
agency).
Thanks to the In-Home Services staff who
give such good service to the older adults of the
community. Last but not least, thanks especially to
the other social workers on staff – Kathy Campbell,
Tina Campbell and Jenn Martin. They have been
wonderful to work with as their knowledge of
resources and federal, state and local services is
surpassed by none. I believe they are the best social
workers in the field of aging in the state of
Michigan. The agency is so fortunate to have them
and their vast knowledge and caring attitudes.
In closing I want to say: THANKS FOR
THE MEMORIES. THIS HAS BEEN A
WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE!!!! Barbara Frankenfield,

thanks to Renaissance Public School Academy. During their summer
program, students at Renaissance Academy held a market day where they sold
items they made and donated $400.00 to the Foster Grandparent Program.
Renaissance Academy hosts two Foster Grandparent Volunteers, Grandpa
Rick and Grandma Caroline who are dedicated in working with the students
on reading, math and other academic requirements. Not only does the Foster
Grandparent program assist with students on academic goals, but it also
provides an opportunity for seniors to stay active, become involved in their
community and foster positive relationships with students to bridge the
generation gap. Thank you again Renaissance Public School Academy! Your
students rock!

Ask a COA Specialist Question: My parent’s electricity had recently gone out and we were concerned
about how long the food will last. How do we know when the food should be
disposed of?
Answer: Michigan State University Extension has a food safety hotline that
people may call for more information on food safety. People may contact the
hotline for information on food expiration dates, how long food should be kept as
leftovers, before being disposed and other safety concerns. Currently this hotline
is operated on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 9-5 p.m. and they can be
contacted by calling 1-810-285-9565.
Michigan State University Extension also offers information on Food
Preservation. You may contact the Extension office for more information on how
to preserve food, which includes properly freezing, boiling, canning and
dehydrating. Information can be accessed by visiting their website at http://
campus.extension.org and the course is available for a cost of $10. For more

Memory Screenings Are You Concerned About Memory Loss in a Loved
One or Yourself? If you notice an interference with daily
activities, and avoidance of tasks, hobbies, or social events, and
memory loss seems to be getting worse, consider a memory
screening. The memory screening helps determine whether
problems are a normal part of aging or due to a condition that
should be treated. The screening consists of questions and tasks
that take about 20 minutes to complete, and is an initiative of
the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America.

National Fire Prevention Week Tips The week of October 7 to 13, 2018 is National Fire Prevention Week. Here
are several fire safety tips to remember and share with family and friends.
Home Heating
If you use space heaters: when space heaters are on, keep them at least three feet
away from anything that can burn, such as curtains or furniture. If you’re exiting the
room, or if you’re going to bed, make sure that you turn off and unplug the space heater.
Never use an oven, stovetop, dryer, or grill to heat your home.
Have a Fire Safe Home
Make sure all electrical cords are in good condition (not damaged or cracked).
Avoid using extension cords. Install CO alarms. Use battery operated candles.
Have smoke detectors installed outside each sleeping area and replace the battery two
times a year (every time that you change your clocks for Daylight Savings Time).
Consider installing alarms that are monitored or flash a bright light as well. If you must
smoke, smoke outside. Put cigarette butts and ashes in water or sand. Never smoke in bed.
Never smoke in a home where medical oxygen is used. Walk through your home and
identify any possible exits in case of a fire. Make a fire escape plan and practice it. Do
not block doors or windows. Make sure that all doors and windows that lead outside
open easily. Keep your eyeglasses, keys, hearing aids, flashlight, and phone within
reach next to your bed.
Cooking Safety
Don’t cook if you are sleepy or drowsy. Use your kitchen timer. Never wear loose
clothes or clothes with long sleeves when cooking. Remember to use oven mitts when
handling hot pans. NEVER leave the kitchen while you’re cooking. Check the kitchen
when finished to make sure the oven burners and other appliances are turned off.
In Case of Fire
Finally, if there's fire or smoke, stay calm. Get out and stay out. Call 911 from
outside the home and wait for firefighters to arrive. Have an outside meeting place a safe
distance away from the building where first responders can see you. If you can’t get out,
call 911 and keep the door of your room closed, and signal for help at the window with a
light colored cloth or flashlight.
Hearing Loss: 3rd Most Common Health Problem Hearing loss currently affects more than 37 million Americans. Although hearing
problems are commonly associated with the normal aging process, more than half of all
hearing-impaired persons are younger than 65.
Untreated hearing loss can affect our ability to understand speech and can
negatively impact our social and emotional well-being. It can decrease our quality of life
and lead to feelings of exclusion, depression, and anxiety. Hearing loss also causes fatigue
because of our increased effort to understand speech.
An audiologist is a highly educated and clinically experienced health-care
professional who specializes in evaluating, diagnosing, and treating people with hearing
loss and balance disorders. The first step in treatment of a hearing problem is a hearing
evaluation. Audiologists at Central Michigan University (CMU) Audiology Clinic have a
variety of specialties to include:
• Performing hearing evaluations for adults and children.
• Prescribing and fitting hearing aids.
• Assisting with cochlear implant programs.
• Performing vestibular evaluations if dizziness and balance problems are experienced.
CMU audiologists can determine the best treatment for a hearing problem.

Preserve the Shepherd Argus The Shepherd Area Historical
Society is sponsoring a Fundraiser hosted
by the Shepherd Bar and Restaurant.
Come and enjoy the food and save the
Argus on October 10, 2018 from 6:00
a.m. to 11:00 p.m. for Breakfast, Lunch,

Three years ago fire destroyed
historic downtown Shepherd. The

Preserve History by microfilming and
digitizing the surviving Shepherd Argus
Newspapers. The newspapers have been
donated to the Shepherd Area Historical
Society by area residents. Their goal is to
reach the $15,000.00 necessary for the
project. At this time they have about one
third of the goal.
The Historical Society is also
accepting Shepherd Argus newspapers and
SHS Yearbooks and class pictures. They
may be dropped off at the Shepherd
