The President Writes 2

KEEPERS OF THE FLAME By President Daniel E. Taylor

I have found it much easier to prepare a message topreach than to write one for publication. While preaching if Inotice you falling asleep there are several options. I can put alittle scream in it, or stomp my feet in exuberance, or if I have acordless microphone, come down into the congregation and shakeyou! But a written message is different because I am not on handto keep you awake and make you read it. So all the screaming, stomping, and shaking has to be done in writing which is no smallachievement for the most prolific writer. Yet, bi-monthly I try itand here is my most recent attempt.

First Samuel 3:1-4, “And the child Samuel ministeredunto the Lord before Eli. And the word of the Lord was preciousin those days; there was no open vision. And it came to pass atthat time when Eli was laid down in his place and his eyes beganto wax dim, that he could not see: And ere the lamp of God wentout in the temple of the Lord, where the ark of God was, andSamuel was laid down to sleep; That the Lord called Samuel: andhe answered, Here am I.” These verses are an excerpt from a veryimportant episode in the life of the prophet Samuel. Have youever thought about where God got His great servants? He usedseveral methods. For example: (1) He chose to reveal himself toNoah. The Bible said “Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord.” (2) He saw something in Abraham that caused Him to call himout of Ur of the Chaldees and Abraham became the friend of God.(3) But often we see in Scripture that He grew them. Think of allthe great servants of God in the Bible whose story starts at birth.

Moses was a proper child pulled out of the bullrushes, raised in Pharoah’s house, educated in Egypt, and grew up to leadGod’s people.

The list of God’s homegrown servants is relatively longif you think about it. David, Jeremiah, John the Baptist, Timothy, even Jesus, just to name a few. Of course, one of the greatexamples of God growing His own servant is the story of Samuel. It starts with a Godly woman who wants a son, but apparentlycan’t have children.

Hannah takes her request to the temple and pours out hersoul to the Lord. In desperation, she makes God a deal, “Yougive me a man child, and I’ll give him back to you as a specialservant.” Conditions were such in Israel that God needed adedicated servant, so He took her up on the bargain, and thusSamuel was born. The Jews say that Samuel was old enoughwhen he was brought to the temple to do various tasks. He“ministered unto the Lord” which means he helped Eli with thework done to care for the place of worship. When the events ofour text took place, Samuel was in his late teens or early twenties.

Thus four verses define Samuel’s future as “A Keeper ofthe Flame.” Verse one says, “There were no Elijahs, Elishas,Gads or Nathans for people to inquire of.” Yes, there were a fewprophets like the unnamed one in Chapter 2, verse 27. But aprophetic word was rare and, therefore, precious in those days.

Samuel had grown in favor with God, and in the midst of aspiritual emergency God called him. We are at this present hourin the midst of a spiritual emergency every bit as serious as it wasin Samuel’s day. Let us use this example given in the Word ofGod as a guideline for our day.

First, where did our story take place and what is thesignificance? Verse 3, “...in the temple of the Lord where the arkof God was...”

God has chosen to manifest Himself to people in Hishouse! I know God is everywhere, but His chosen place ofoperation is His House. The ark was the visible representation ofHis presence, and it was in the tabernacle at Shilo. It wasn’t manthat came up with the concept of having a meeting place calledchurch. God designed that as a location where people came forthe express purpose of worshiping Him.

Second, when did the events of our story take placethat make it so urgent? Verse 3, “Ere the lamp of God went outin the temple of the Lord.” “Ere” means “before.” God calledSamuel before the flame went out in His house.

Exodus 27:20 says that a special oil was used in the lampin the holy place where the ark was and that it was to burn“always.”

It is mentioned in verse 2 that Eli’s “eyes began to waxdim, that he could not see.” To Eli, the light was always dim, andjust as he was going blind physically he was going blindspiritually. Spurgeon said, “An unsaved man in the ministry islike making a blind man the professor of optics.” Perhaps Elilooked at the lamp but didn’t see how low the oil was, or maybehe was so overwhelmed with the behavior of Hophni andPhinehas that he forgot, or perhaps he had grown so cold the lightdidn’t matter.

Whatever the reason for Eli’s neglect of the lamp isuncertain, but one thing is for sure, that flame in the templemattered to God! And “ere (it) went out,” he called somebodythat was available and dedicated.

Third, how did the Lord respond to this crisis in thetemple? Verse 4, “The Lord called Samuel...” Hophni andPhinehas were bold in their sins. And Eli was weak on hisconvictions. God was looking for someone who would be boldin His holiness. The Lord is still looking for ministers that willhear His voice and boldly declare what He says.

Fourth, how did Samuel respond when God calledhim? Verse 4, “The Lord called Samuel, and he answered, Heream I.”

Several years ago, the Overcomers choir sang a song thatsaid, “I am here to give you all.” Samuel’s life was the house ofGod, his work was the work of God, and his will was to do thewill of God.

Some of you reading this article have heard God callingyou. We have all heard it said, “If God calls you to do something

THE CHRISTIAN’SLIFE PRESERVER

By Editor Wallace E. Joice

It was Friday the thirteenth, 1985. TheOBI tour bus was in route to the Great Passion Play at EurekaSprings, Arkansas. As the bus traveled south on Arkansas 23, insemi-darkness and a light drizzle, it overtopped a mountain andbegan its descent. The driver tried to shift to a lower gear, but wasunable to do so. The brakes then failed, and the bus careened outof control. Then the bus went off the road on a sharp curve at thebottom of the mountain, and plunged down a ravine. The driverand four students were killed. Thirty-eight students were reportedinjured. Two were hospitalized, one in critical condition.

When we received news at Neosho of the tragedy nearEureka Springs, we were all distressed, especially Brother D. C.Branham, founder and president of the school. The next dayBrother Branham called me and asked me to preach in the Sundaymorning service. Of course, I consented, and told him I would domy best. At first I was at a loss to know what to preach, but as Imeditated and prayed, I felt led to share from Romans chapter 8,verses 28 and 29, “And we know that all things work together forgood to them that love God, to them who are the called accordingto his purpose. For whom he did foreknow, he also didpredestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he mightbe the first born among many brethren.” According to the NeoshoDaily News, I said concerning those who died, “In the providenceof God and His wise care, He took them to be with Him.”

When I was questioned later over the phone by the newspaper, “I quoted from the book of Psalms: ‘My times are in (his)hand(s)’ (Psalm 31:15). It makes the unbearable bearable.”

I further explained, “We’re a close church family here.We feel like God rules and overrules, and even in tragedy we cansee His hand. It’s something of a miracle that only five werekilled, and that there were no more who were seriously injured.”

During the past two decades, Sister Joice and I have gonethrough some very difficult times. We don’t begin to understandsome of the things that have happened to us. Sometimes in spiteof everything, we must grab hold of Romans 8:28 and hang on fordear life. I call it “The Christian’s Life Preserver.” It will keep usfrom sinking in despair.

As we take a preliminary look at this text, I would like tocharacterize it first as a precious text. Yes, it is a precious text ina precious passage of Scripture. Romans 8 is one of the greatestchapters in the Word of God. It is virtually a pearl bed of divineinspiration where gems of spiritual truth lie in abundance awaitingthe grasp of the spiritual treasure hunter. How precious thisspiritual pearl, Romans 8:28, has been to the saints of God downthrough the centuries of time!

Yet again, I characterize it as a difficult text. Dr.Clarence Edward Macartney, a great Presbyterian pastor of the pastgeneration, once said concerning the various reactions of men tothe truth stated in the text: “One says, ‘Can it be true?’ Anothersays, ‘I know it is not true; the experience of life is against it.’ Andanother, ‘I could wish that it were true.’ And another, ‘I hope thatit is true.’ But there are some who are able to say with Paul, ‘We

know that all things work together for good to them that loveGod.’”

Then, I characterize it as a necessary text. God’s peopleare a tried people. It has always been so, and in this life will everbe so. Sooner or later, we must all kneel, as it were, in our ownpersonal Gethsemane where it seems that our very life will becrushed from us. How needful it is in such a time to know andbelieve the truth of this text.

Believing this text will gild our night of sorrow with thegold of dawning joy! It will line the dark clouds of our defeat withthe silver of hope! It will cover the thorns of our afflictions withthe fragrant rose petals of God’s divine comfort!

As we turn our attention to the words of our text, I wouldlike for us to notice first---

THE PEOPLE OF GODNotice that the people of God are characterized in two

different ways--From the standpoint of God’s provision, they are

“them who are the called.” In verses 29 and 30, this provision isfurther elaborated. God’s people are foreknown. “For whom hedid foreknow...” He knew us before our birth. To Jeremiah Hesaid, “Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and beforethou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordainedthee a prophet unto the nations”(Jeremiah 1:5).

Indeed, He knew us before He created the world.Ephesians 1:4 says, “According as he hath chosen us in him beforethe foundation of the world, that we should be holy and withoutblame before him in love.”

Yes, before our birth, or even the creation of the world,He foreknew our acceptance of the Savior. How marvelous thatGod sees the future better than we can see the past, or even thepresent!

Then, we are predestinated, “...he also didpredestinate...” Predestination , as it is presented in Scripture, means that God has a wonderful plan for our lives. HoraceBushnell, a well-known American preacher of the past, preacheda sermon entitled, “Every Man’s Life A Plan Of God.” He basedit on God’s prophetic word to King Cyrus, “...I girded thee, thoughthou hast not known me” (Isaiah 45:5). May we allow God’s planto be perfectly wrought in our lives.

Again, we are called, “...them he also called...” TheScriptures speak of a universal call. This is presented in the great“whosoever” verses, “...whosoever believeth...” (John 3:16),“whosoever shall call” (Romans 10:13), and “whosoever will”(Revelation 22:17).

Not only do the Scriptures speak of a universal call, theyalso speak of an effectual call. In Matthew chapter 20, verse 16,Jesus says, “So the last shall be first, and the first last: for many becalled, but few chosen.” This is stated more succinctly in chapter20, verse 14, “For many are called, but few chosen.” The“called,” then, spoken of in our passage, are those who haveresponded to the universal call of salvation.

Still further, we are justified, “...them he also justified...”In Theology, justification means to declare righteous. It means thatwe can stand “not guilty” in the presence of the thrice-holy God.

Finally, we are glorified, “...them he also glorified.” Weare not yet glorified in experience, but we are in God’s purpose.Yes, some glorious day we will be translated and transformed intothe image of God’s dear Son. (Continued on page 4)

The President Writes (Continued from page 2) 4and you refuse, He will just get somebody else.” I think Godgets tired of having to get somebody else! The reason I think thatis, is because He kept calling Samuel until He heard the wordsthat were music to his ears, “Speak; for thy servant heareth.”

Every year at OBI, young people much like Samuelcome to prepare for ministry. And like Samuel they grow, like

Editor’s Notes (Continued from page 3)

Samuel they learn to recognize the voice of God, and likeSamuel, God directs them to the work He wants done. Of course, all are not “like Samuel.” Some get weary and give up. And I’mafraid there are even more who never answer the call. If that’sthe case with you, remember what I said, “God gets tired ofhaving to get somebody else.”

Secondly, God’s people are characterized in verse 28 from thestandpoint of their response to God as “them that love God.” FirstJohn chapter 4, verse 10 says “Herein is love, not that we loved God,but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for oursins.” Then he adds in verse 19, “We love him, because he first lovedus.”

The provisions of this text are not for all to claim. This is nota general promise. Sometimes this text is paraphrased to the effect that“all things work for the best.” No, they don’t! This is true only to“them that love God.” Oft times things work out terribly to those whodo not love God.

Only those who have responded to God’s call with love andobedience can rightfully claim this promise. The acid test of our loveis our obedience. Jesus said, “If ye love me, keep mycommandments” (John 14:15). St. Augustine said “Love God and doas you please.” If we truly love God, we will want to please Him. Wewill not want to do anything that displeases Him.

Let us notice secondly--THE PROVIDENCE OF GOD

Before giving further attention to this thought, I would like tobriefly define the word providence. Providence is the noun form of theverb provide. It was originally pronounced like provide with the enceending. The word provide is from two Latin words: pro, before, andvidere, to see. Thus, we see that providence means “The act ofproviding, exercising forethought, or preparing” (Webster’s NewCollegiate Dictionary).

As we look at what our text has to say about God’sprovidence, we see that it is an assured providence, “...we know...”The word “know” was one of Paul’s favorite words. To the Philippianshe wrote, “For I know that this shall turn to my salvation through yourprayer, and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ” (Philippians 1:19).To the Corinthians he said, “For we know that if our earthly house ofthis tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an housenot made with hands, eternal in the heavens” (2 Corinthians 5:1). Inhis final letter to Timothy he said, “For the which cause I also sufferthese things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I havebelieved, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I havecommitted unto him against that day” (2 Timothy 1:12).

This assurance is born of faith in God. The writer of Hebrewsdeclares, “Now faith is the substance (R.V. ‘assurance’) of thingshoped for, the evidence of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1). Pascal, thegreat French mystic once said, “The heart has reasons of which themind knows nothing.”

Notice further that it is a comprehensive providence, “...thatall things...” Consider what this phrase says, not a few things, norsome things, nor even most things, but “all things”–the sunshine andthe shadows–the blessings and the buffetings–“all things.”

Then consider the writer of this phrase–none other than theapostle Paul. Note that he was no fair-weather soldier. Rather, he wasa battle-scarred soldier of the cross. Ponder the sufferings he recountedin writing to the Corinthians, “Are they ministers of Christ? (I speakas a fool) I am more; in labours more abundant, in stripes above

measure, in prisons more frequent, in deaths oft. Of the Jews five timesreceived I forty stripes save one. Thrice was I beaten with rods, oncewas I stoned, thrice I suffered shipwreck, a night and a day I have beenin the deep” (2 Corinthians 11:23-25). Yet, in spite of all this, he wroteto the Romans in Romans chapter 8, and verse 18, “For I reckon thatthe sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared withthe glory which shall be revealed in us.”

Again, consider why this phrase “all things” is so–God ordersour steps. The Psalmist said, “The steps of a good man are ordered bythe Lord: and he delighteth in his way. Though he fall, he shall not beutterly cast down: for the Lord upholdeth him with his hand” (Psalm37:23, 24).

Yet again, it is a harmonious providence, “work together...”When the pieces of a puzzle are unassembled they “make neither rhymenor reason,” but as they are properly put together, a clear pictureappears.

Often, during a military campaign, battles are lost, but in theend the war won. Often we learn valuable lessons through defeat andloss. A songwriter said, “I may lose a battle now and then, but I’vealready won the war!”

Finally, it is a beneficient providence, “for good.” Noticewhat the text does not say. It does not say that all things that happento us are good. Many things that happen to us are not good. There isnothing good about unrewarded labor, loss of property, betrayal byfriends, persecution, sickness, and bereavement.

Again, the text does not say that all things work together forgood to all people. Someone has said that the trials of life “make usbetter or bitter.” The same sun that melts the wax, hardens the clay.Josh Billings once said, “Life is a grindstone, and whether it grinds aman down, or polishes him up depends on the stuff he is made of.”

Then, let us notice what our text does say. God rules andoverrules. He is sovereign. He has the final say in the affairs of men.

Moreover, God can bring good out of evil. The Psalmist said,“Surely the wrath of man shall praise thee: the remainder of wrathshalt thou restrain” (Psalm 76:10). God makes “the wrath of man,”and even the designs of the devil to serve His divine purposes.

Consider the trial of Job. Though Job didn’t understand whatwas happening to him he declared, “But he knoweth the way that Itake: when he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold” (Job23:10). The trials that Satan intended for Job’s destruction, servedrather to refine his character.

As Job’s story concludes we read, “And the LORD turned thecaptivity of Job, when he prayed for his friends: also the LORD gaveJob twice as much as he had before” (Job 42:10).

Again, consider the trial of Joseph. When his brothers beggedhis forgiveness he replied, “but as for you, ye thought evil against me;but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to savemuch people alive” (Genesis 50:20).

Anna W. Waterman, in her hymn, Yes I Know says in verse4:

“He will keep thee while the agesRoll thro’out eternity; (Continued on page 5)

Page 5: Return Service Requested Std... · I have found it much easier to prepare a message to preach than to write one for publication. While preaching if I ... First Samuel 3:1-4, “And

Editor’s Notes (Continued from page 4) 5Tho’ earth hinders and hell rages,

All must work for good to thee.”Finally, consider--THE PEOPLE OF GOD, “ACCORDING TO HIS

PURPOSE.”God purposed to have a people. His people were to

receive and return His love. God’s love is an integral part of Hisnature. John tells us, “He that loveth not knoweth not God; forGod is love” (1 John 4:8).

Then, God’s people were to have communion andfellowship with Him. Only in such communion and fellowshipcan man find meaning and fulfillment in life. In the Confessionsof St. Augustine he said, “Thou madest us for Thyself, and ourheart is restless, until it repose in thee.”

Further, God purposed to have a Christ-like people. In verse 29 Paul said, “For whom he did foreknow, he also didpredestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that hemight be the first born among many brethren.”

At creation, man was created in God’s image. Genesischapter 1, verse 27, says, “So God created man in his own image,in the image of God created he him; male and female created hethem.” This is not a physical image; rather it speaks of God’sspiritual image.

The fall marred God’s image in man, and man becamedepraved (crooked, corrupt, evil). Moreover, this depravitybecame hereditary. Thus we read, “And Adam lived an hundredand thirty years, and begat a son in his own likeness, after hisimage; and called his name Seth” (Genesis 5:3). Further, Davidsays, “Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my motherconceive me” (Psalm 51:5).

God’s ultimate purpose in redemption is to restore Hislost image in man. The writer of Hebrews tells us that Christ is“the express image of God,” “Who being the brightness of hisglory, and the express (exact) image of his person, and upholdingall things by the word of his power, when he had by himselfpurged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty onhigh” (Hebrews 1:3). Thus, God wants us “to be conformed tothe image of his Son.”

In regeneration, the restoration of the lost image isstarted. Paul indicates this in his epistle to the Ephesians, “Andbe renewed in the spirit of your mind. And that ye put on the newman, which after God is created in righteousness and trueholiness” (Ephesians 4:23, 24). Then to the Colossians he wrote,“And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledgeafter the image of him that created him” (Colossians 3:10).

Then in sanctification, the restoration of the lost imageis furthered. In 2 Corinthians chapter 3, verse 18, Paul wrote,“But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory ofthe Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.” An old chorus says,

“Let the beauty of Jesus be seen in me,All His wonderful passion and purity;

Oh, thou Spirit divine,All my nature refine,

Till the beauty of Jesus be seen in me.”Oh, may the world see in our lives, not the ugliness of

self, but the beauty of Jesus! Finally, at Christ’s coming, the lost image will be

perfected. John declares, “Beloved, now are we the sons of God,and it doth not yet appear what we shall be; but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see himas he is” (1 John 3:2).

I conclude with a story I have shared before. It hasblessed and encouraged me for nearly a half century. Dr. BillyGraham told this story of a friend of his who lost his job, afortune, a wife, and a home during the depression. But hetenaciously held to his faith–the only thing he had left. One dayhe stopped to watch some men doing stonework on a hugechurch. One of them was chiseling a triangular piece of stone. “What are you going to do with that?” asked the friend. Theworkman said, “See that little opening away up there near thespire? Well, I’m shaping this down here so it will fit in upthere.” Tears filled his eyes as he walked away, for it seemedthat God had spoken through the workman to explain the ordealthrough which he was passing. “I’m shaping you down here soyou’ll fit in up there.”

Faithful 500 Program

In November, 2006, we began what we call the Faithful500 program. The goal is to get 500 people who will give $10.00a month to help supplement the OBI general fund. As this issue ofThe Standard Bearer is in it’s preparation stage, we are still at aboutthe halfway mark with a little over 250 faithful people alreadycontributing. Our thanks to those of you who are already giving, and an encouraging word to those of you who may still be

considering doing so. Join the ranks to help train young people forChristian service at a conservative Bible school which emphasizesBible holiness. Your investment in their training is a worthyendeavor now and we believe for eternity as well.

If you haven’t already made a pledge and would like to,just make your check to OBI, and write Faithful 500 in the memoand mail it to: OBI, PO Box 398, Neosho, MO 64850-0398.

GUATEMALA UPDATE

Since assuming responsibilities for the Bible College and Church in Guatemala, we

have seen the Lord work tremendously to further the kingdom of God in Central America.

With an average of 25 students per semester, we have seen 37 graduate in the past 2 1/2 years.

Space prevents a full disclosure of all that has transpired as far as building projects,

renovations, mission trips from Americans, internships of OBI students, etc. In lieu of this

limitation we would like to share in each issue of THE STANDARD BEARER some of the

fruits and labors of individual graduates.

Let me introduce to you Pedro Saurez.

Born in Nicaragua, he came from Costa Rica for

schooling, and completed his studies in November,

2003. He was married in January, 2004, and then

proceeded to start a church in a cornfield at El

Tejar, Guatemala in February. I was privileged to

be in service with them 16 months later on Father's

Day, June, 2005, with 125 in attendance. We were

there again with a missions group from Ozark

Christian Academy two years later (June 2007) and

found that Pastor Pedro has the foundation laid for a

50' x 150' new church building. He kept saying "by

faith" as he shared in tears his vision for what God

is calling him to do, and how the Lord has supplied

thus far. He is trusting God for $20,000 to complete

this project.

In future updates we will share other

victorious reports of graduates gleaning souls for

the kingdom. It is our desire to be of financial aid to

the various ministries of our graduates, like Pedro,

who are accomplishing something for God. Faithful

supporters of this mission work have made the

training of nationals possible. Should you like to

Camp Peniel.

Our thanks to the pastors who are such a vital part of Camp Peniel. Without you and your

young people there would be little or no need for Camp Peniel to exist. Our thanks also to the many

workers who so freely gave beyond limits to make Camp Peniel happen.

Attendance continues to increase with perhaps one of the largest groups of campers this

year ever. We rejoice not only in what was accomplished with some being reclaimed and several

being filled and refilled with the Spirit, but also in the readiness of the young people to get in (See

poem below). God bless and keep each of you is our prayer as we wait for His return. (More

Gett’n In

There’s a well w orn phrase among Pentecostal

people,

Like a dog eared song book, as common as a steeple.

First Time I heard it? W ell I couldn’t say w hen,

But if an old timer shouted they called it gett’n in.

I could see “gett’n in” w as a spiritual term,

Just how it all worked I was w ant’n to learn.

Those near the altar seemed gett’n in most,

So I decided I’d have to move in close.

Have you ever felt a hunger in your soul so deep,

That nothing else mattered, and you couldn’t

sleep?

You ever have a thirst nothing could satisfy,

But a Pentecostal service when the Holy Ghost

came by?

W ell that’s where I w as at w hen the Revival

began,

Dryer by the minute and w ant’ n to get in .

W hen up pulled Elijah w ith horses of Far,

Driving a chariot called the Morning Star ...

He said, Ya’ll get in.

W hen the gett’n in started little did I know ,

How far gett’n in w ould take you if you w anted

to go.

Back to Genesis where Noah built the Ark,

Loading tw o skunks gett’n ready to embark ...

He said, Ya’ll get in.

The phrase grew in meaning as the revival

w ent on,

It separated the w ise from the foolish ones.

But it seemed like it peaked on the Jericho road,

W hen w e saw the Samaritans donkey pack’n

a load ...

It w as us, so w e could get in.

Then John on Patmos all alone,

His fellow disciples martyred and gone.

In a voice so low you could barely hear it,

“W hen the Lord’s day comes, I’m gonna

get in the Spirit.”

He said, W hy don’t Ya’ll get in?

So I follow ed four fellow s to Ca per nee um,

They w ere determined; desperate and carrying

a chum.

Couldn’t get in at the door, the roof w as their

only hope,

W ith the dust and dirt falling on the floor they

let him dow n by a rope.

And Jesus said, Faith, looks like people trying

to get in.

So here I am like Daniel of old,

Bound and determined and feel’n bold.

Rather spend a month in a lion’s den,

Than w aste one service not trying to get in.

Thoughts to Ponder JOHN WESLEY’S ADVICE

Believe evil of no one, and put the best construction on

everything.

Speak evil of no one; keep your thoughts to yourself till

you come to the person concerned.

If you see what you think is wrong in a person, tell him

plainly.

Be serious; let your motto be “Holiness to the Lord.”

Avoid all lightness, jesting, and foolish talking.

Be diligent; never while away time, nor spend more time

than is necessary in unprofitable talk or occupation.

Converse sparingly and cautiously with the opposite sex.

Beware of all affectation, and preach the gospel as the

servants of all.

You have nothing to do but to ...spend and be spent in the

work of the Lord.

Be punctual; do everything exactly at the time.

Be ashamed of nothing but sin; not of cleaning your own

boots or your neighbor’s or such things.

In all things act not according to your own will. Employ

your time according to your profession in preaching, reading,

meditating, and prayer.

Aspire to inspire, before you expire. (Seen on an outdoor sign in Joplin, M O)
