Dear Families:
Chris anity is a dialogue in which the ini a ve is God’s call. This call is a generous offer to be with God and to preach. What should be our response? The first reading from the Book of Jonah, tells the story of the stubborn prophet. Having spent three days in the belly of the fish, he finally decides to preach to the inhabitants of Nineveh, who “believed in God” (Jon 3:5) “…and turned from their evil ways…” (Jon 3:10). Jesus alludes to this double event, when, in response to members of the Sanhedrin (Jewish Supreme Council, which decided state and religious affairs) who asked him for a miracle, He tells them that, as Jonah, “…the Son of Man will be in the bosom of the earth three days and three nights…”, adding: “At the judgment, the men of Niniveh will arise with this genera on and condemn it, because they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and there is something greater than Jonah here…” (Ma hew 12:40). This Sunday’s catechesis teaches us that our response to the preaching of Jesus (infinitely superior to that of Jonah) must be conversion, as the Ninevites converted at the preaching of the prophet Jonah. Jesus makes the announcement of the coming of the Kingdom of God, accompanied by the invita on to penance and faith in the Good News: “Repent and believe in the Gospel.” (Mk 1:15). Conversion is always required to accept God’s offer and to remain in that acceptance, because we usually live with our backs to God, and we are led by the world’s standards – so contrary to God’s. It is not enough to just give up our sinful behavior, which, through the sacraments, puts us in a state of grace. We must con nually be straightening out our path because worldly things are constantly pulling us, and if we get carried away by them, we deviate from the path that leads to God. Our response should be an a tude of trust: Trust in the word of God and believe in His promises. In this faith the Lord links the gran ng of the goods of the kingdom, here, and the final inheritance of eternal life itself. Finally, in today’s Gospel, the proclama on of the kingdom is followed by the call to the ministry that Jesus made to the fishermen of Galilee. And it is this belonging to the Kingdom that makes every Chris an an obligatory par cipant in the universal call of God. (God wants to reach everyone, and we are sent to speak of Him). Jesus calls us “light of the world” and describes our mission: “your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.” (Mt 5:14, 16). Let us be happy and thank God who has chosen us and calls us to be His partners in the announcement of the Gospel of Salva on to all of humanity. May God bless you. Father Celestino, Pastor
Queridas familias: El cris anismo es un diálogo en el que la inicia va es parte de la llamada de Dios. Esta llamada es una oferta generosa para estar con Él y hablar de Él a los demás. ¿Cuál debe ser nuestra respuesta?
La primera lectura tomada del Libro de Jonás nos refiere la historia del profeta terco, que tras haber pasado tres días en el vientre del pez, se decide por fin a predicar a los habitantes de Nínive, los cuales “creyeron en Dios” (Jon 3:5) “y se convir eron de su mala conducta” (Jon 3:10). Jesús alude a este doble acontecimiento, cuando, en respuesta a los miembros del Sanedrín (Consejo Supremo de los Judíos que trataba y decidía los asuntos de Estado y de Religión), que le pedían un milagro del cielo, les responde que, como Jonás, “el Hijo del hombre (Jesus) estará en el seno de la erra tres días y tres noches,” añadiendo: “Los ninivitas se levantarán en el juicio contra esta generación y la condenarán, porque ellos se convir eron por la predicación de Jonás, y aquí hay algo más que Jonás” (Mt 12:40s).
La catequesis de este domingo nos hace ver que nuestra respuesta a la predicación de Jesús (infinitamente superior a Jonás) ene que ser la conversión, como se convir eron los ninivitas ante la predicación del profeta Jonás.
Jesús hace el anuncio de la llegada del Reino de Dios acompañado de la invitación a la penitencia y a la fe en la Buena No cia: “Conver os y creed la Buena No cia (Mc 1:15).
La conversión es siempre necesaria para aceptar la oferta divina y para mantenernos en esa aceptación, porque habitualmente vivimos de espaldas a Dios y nos dejamos llevar por los criterios del mundo, tan contrarios a los de Dios.
No basta con la renuncia a nuestra conducta de pecadores, que, mediante los sacramentos, nos sitúa en estado de gracia. Hay que estar con nuamente enderezando el rumbo, porque las cosas de aquí ran de nosotros y, si nos dejamos llevar por ellas, nos desvían de la ruta que conduce a Dios.
Y en nuestra respuesta debe estar la ac tud de confianza, que se a de la palabra de Dios y cree en sus promesas. A esta fe vincula el Señor la concesión de los bienes del reino aquí y la herencia defini va del mismo en la vida eterna.
Finalmente, en el evangelio de hoy, el anuncio del reino va seguido de la llamada al apostolado que Jesús hizo a los pescadores de Galilea. Y es que la pertenencia al reino hace de cada cris ano un obligado colaborador en la llamada universal de Dios (a todos Dios quiere llegar y nosotros somos los enviados para hablarles de Dios).
Jesús nos llama “luz del mundo”, y describe así nuestra misión: “Alumbre vuestra luz a los hombres, de modo que vean vuestras buenas obras y den gloria a vuestro Padre que está en el cielo” (Mt 5:14 y 16).
Sintámonos felices y demos gracias a Dios que nos ha elegido y nos llama a ser sus colaboradores en el anuncio a los demás del evangelio de Salvación.
