PASTOR’S COLUMN I was sad that we were not able to have the Annual Cookie Walk this weekend, but hope to do so next November. Of course this means I won’t be able to commandeer your chocolate chip cookies and cinnamon sugar cookies. Next year I will! I’d like to direct your attention to a statement on page 4 regarding the latest state legislation to further loosen the state abortion laws. Certainly it should be our concern that changes are proposed that would be harmful to all parties involved, and the Bishops would ask you to contact your state rep and state senator voicing your concerns to these changes. We are very blessed to have our livestream broadcast equipment, but not all parishes are as fortunate. We have had ours for five years, starting with one small camcorder and moving up to a professional four camera system. In the church tech conferences I have attended these many years, I have come to understand the need for Catholic parishes to have livestreaming capabilities. When the pandemic hit, some churches chose to livestream through their Facebook and YouTube channels. St. Christine’s in Marshfield Hills is now working to establish a dedicated You Tube channel and they need 100 subscribers to register. If you are able could you visit: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCCDq3gkkVrU4SjkDGIHftw?/featured and hit the subscribe button. It would be great if we were able to help them reach that level by the Thanksgiving Day. You might also take time to check out their social media offerings on this channel when they get it up and running. I have been told they have begun their livestreaming their Sunday Mass and I am very happy for their parishioners...there’s nothing like seeing your home church, especially if your away due to the pandemic, illness or travel. Keep them in your prayers as it’s tough to navigate all the logistics of this virtual world. This week we replaced the buckled & rusted parish hall side doors. I hope to have them painted this coming week. The Grand Annual funded this repairs. Before winter sets in we will side the front lower half of the hall to the boiler room. I want to thank Rob at Foster Lumber for taking the time and his equipment to move the storage shed and the St Vincent DePaul Boxes. This done at no charge to us! If you have any lumber needs I hope you’ll visit his store on Webster Street! I’d also like to thank another Marshfield resident, Dick Fusco, (owner of the local Christmas Décor franchise) for the beautiful decorations. The tree in front of the hall is decked out in multi color lights and truly brings the festiveness of the approaching season. He gave us a big discount this year to bring joy amidst the Pandemic. If you are interested in having your home decorated call him (508) 801-8819. This weekend we have the Retired Religious Sisters Collection. Due to COVID-19 we are only able to take up the one collection, so please consider adding an additional gift from them, as we will apply the same percentage we contributed last year. Many of us were blessed by their hard work and dedication, this is a great opportunity to express it with our financial and spiritual support. Thanks for your generosity. We have wrapped up the Grand Annual & Catholic Appeal. Thanks so much for the help on both drives. This Sunday at noon Julie’s Learning Center will be picking up the 50 Turkeys and trimmings. If you want to participate please drop it off to the three season porch. Thanks for all those who have donated!
Have a Happy Thanksgiving and be safe!

CATECHETICAL CORNER CATECHETICAL CORNEROOur Question of the Week:
ERk:
“Gospel Writers?”
I t seems logical that many others besides Mat-thew, Mark, Luke and John wrote the life of
Christ. Why then were these four Gospels chosen to be the accepted one, especially since Mark and Luke were not apostles? When and how was this determination made? Answer: While there are certainly other reputed accounts of Jesus’ life and some of these have the names of apostles attached to them, (for example, Thomas and James) the evidence seems pretty clear that these Gospels were writ-ten long after the death of these apostles. As for Mark and Luke, St. Mark was likely the assistant to St. Peter and so his Gospel is held to be St. Peter’s ac-count. As for St. Luke, he is very clear to state that he carefully analyzed eyewitness accounts in preparing his Gospel. Which books ended up in the canon (a word that means “list”) of sacred Scripture was a complex process that de-veloped in the early years of the Church under the guid-ance of the Holy Spirit. Even through the late fourth centu-ry there were some disagreements among believers as to which books belonged to the canon. The Book of Revela-tion and some of the epistles were disputed. Likewise, some for inclusion in the canon proposed some other edi-fying writings from the early years, such as the epistle of Pope St. Clement and the Didache. The resolution of the final list or canon of sacred Scripture was largely resolved in a series of councils in the late fourth century: the Synod of Rome in 382, the Council of Hippo in 393 and the Council of Carthage in 397. The councils, in consultation with Pope Damasus and Pope Innocent, gave us the list of books in the canon of sacred Scripture that we have today in the Catholic Church. This canon was largely undisputed until the 16th century when Martin Luther removed a number of Old Testament Books and certain other Protestant denominations followed. The primary standards used by the council fathers and popes were liturgy and doctrine. Did a particular book have widespread use and acceptance in the liturgy of the Church? Did it comport well with the Faith and received doctrine of the Church? These standards produced the list we have today of sacred Scripture. Surely, by faith we know the Holy Spirit inspired this process as well.

Roman Catholic Bishops of Massachusetts Statement Regarding Senate Budget Amendment Expanding Abortion Access
November 16, 2020
The Catholic Church teaches that life itself starts at conception and ends with natural death. Last week, as part of the annual fiscal year state budget process, the Massachusetts House of Representatives passed amendment number 759.1. We are concerned that the amend-ment, if enacted, would expand abortion access in the Commonwealth well beyond what is currently in state law We are also concerned that the amendment is an effort to expand abortion in Massachusetts by taking advantage of the process of approving a budget for the Com-monwealth. Tomorrow, the budget debate will move from the House to the Massachusetts Senate. Regrettably, the Senate amendment (No. 180) closely mirrors the version that was passed in the House last week. In fact, it would also allow abortions to be performed under cer-tain circumstances for the full term of the pregnancy. Abortion at any time, from the moment of conception to birth, is in direct conflict with Catholic teaching and must be opposed. Today, we feel compelled to restate additional objections that were raised in our initial Statement. Specifically, current law requires a young woman under the age of 18 years old to gain the consent of a parent, guardian or the court to have an abortion. The amendment under consideration would decrease the age of consent to 16 years old. In its simplest terms, a 16 or 17 year old girl would be deprived of the guidance and support of an adult at the time of making this life changing decision. Finally, although life-supporting equipment would be required to be in the room for abortions performed after 24 weeks, the specific language in the amendment is nuanced enough that the physician would not be required to use the equipment. Specifically, it would “enable” the physician performing the abortion to take appropriate steps, in keeping with good medical practice….to preserve the life and health of a live birth and the patient. For these reasons we urge the full Senate not to pass amendment num-ber 180. His Eminence Seán P. O’Malley, OFM, Cap. Most Reverend Robert J. McManus Archbishop of Boston Bishop of Worcester Most Reverent Edgar M. da Cunha, SDV Bishop of Fall River
