NURSE’S NOTES, by Karen Dean R.N.
Last week was ALS Awareness Week
What is ALS? Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), sometimes called Lou Gehrig’s disease after the New York Yankees baseball player whose career ended in 1939 because of the illness, is a progressive neurodegenerative condition that affects the nerve cells (motor neurons) in the brain and spinal cord that control voluntary movement. ALS most commonly occurs in people between 40 and 70, but younger and older individuals also can develop the disease. What are the Symptoms? Weakness and loss of muscle mass (atrophy), which occur as a result of the degeneration of motor neurons, are the primary symptoms of ALS. In later stages, people with ALS may be unable to stand or walk, use their hands and arms, chew and swallow food, or speak. The ultimately may be unable to breathe without the support of a machine (mechanical ventilation). What causes it? ALS is caused by degeneration of the motor neurons, but scientists have not yet discovered why the disease occurs in some people but not others. Ninety to 95 percent of ALS cases are “sporadic”, meaning they occur randomly, with no clear risk factors or causes. Individuals with sporadic ALS have no family history of the disease, nor are their family members at increased risk of developing it. In the hereditary for of ALS (only five to 10 percents of cases), researchers have identified mutations in more than a dozen genes. What Research Is Being Done? Current research projects funded by the American Brain Foundation (americanbrainfoundation.org), the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (ninds.nih.gov), the ALS Association (alsa.org), the Muscular Dystrophy Association (mda.org), and several other advocacy organizations seek to understand the mechanisms that selectively trigger motor neurons to degenerate in ALS and to identify ways to halt the processes leading to cell death. Scientists are also working to develop better biomarkers and tools to diagnose and assess disease progression and the efficacy of treatments.

A Family Perspective by Bud Oscar
Seventh Sunday
Giving the short off your back, the other cheek or walking / driving the extra mile is normal stuff in
families. We do that for one another. Today’s Gospel reminds us all people even those we don’t like, are
our brothers and sisters. Our family should prepare us to be FAMILY to others.

From Little Flower: We are in need of helpers to work the dessert table each
week at the Fish Frys! This does not involve a lot of work and is a good social time.
Please sign up for some time slots and see what you are missing out on. It is not only
for a worthwhile cause. It is a time for fellowship and service for our parish. We had a
lot of new faces working the dessert table last year and I think they really enjoyed it.. I
sincerely hope you sign up again this year and hopefully we will see some more new
faces. Please consider signing up! We need helpful hands!
Thank You, Suzanne
We received this in the mail, thought those of you who
remember/know him would be pleased to know!!
Please continue to pray and support the Bishop Donahue Foundation, Students, Alumni, Faculty, Community and the Families.
Prayer for Grace and Guidance
Oh my God, You know my weakness and failings, and
that without Your help I can accomplish nothing for
the good of souls, my own and others’. Grant me,
therefore, the help of Your grace. Grant it according
to my particular needs this day. Enable me to see the
task You will set before me in the daily routine of my
life, and help me work hard at my appointed tasks.
Teach me to bear patiently all the trials of suffering or
failure that may come to me today. Amen.
