PARISH PRAYER God of All Goodness, You have called us from the corners of the earth in order to form this community of faith in Chicago.
You have blessed us with a living faith so that our faithless world may come to know You.
Make us generous toward those who hunger; compassionate toward those who suffer abuse;
kind toward immigrants and refugees; merciful toward those who sin against You.
May we be true disciples of Your Son, faithful stewards of Your Grace, evangelizers who are strengthened by the gifts of
Your Holy Spirit that our petitions may bear much fruit and give Glory to Your Holy Name.
You may not be well rested today. Yesterday was the Fourth of July and if history is any measure, too many people were eating too much, drinking too much, and doing too many stupid things with either firecrackers or guns. Sadly, Independence Day in Chicago is more often famous for the violence it provokes than the celebration that our nation was founded on the principle that all persons are created equal (Yes, I changed the original because it was sexist and demeaning). So, instead of building bridges of peaceful coexistence and understanding between races, religious groups, and people of differing opinions, we square off into our little corners to declare what America “ought to be.” That is why the Fifth of July finds us tired, hung over, and far less great than we were. Previous generations celebrated our independence by first going to church and thanking God for these inalienable rights. Current generations celebrate by taking the weekend off from God and human decency. On this day when we are tired from our celebrations and burdened by the violence, racism, and injustice all around us, Jesus extends a special invitation to us. “Come to me” He says. Tired of all the political infighting? Burdened by a system that rewards injustice and avoids real solutions? Are you finding it harder to get up the energy to praise God the Father who has unlocked for us the mysteries of happiness and hope? Then, “Come to me,” says the Lord, “and I will give you rest.” There is an inherent danger in the invitation: to take on the yoke of another when we just celebrated our independence. Yet, what is the “yoke” of Christ if not a yoke that guides us toward justice and equality, plowing the streets of the city with the seeds of hope toward peace. If we are “yoked” together, then we must pull together in order to advance. No longer do “I” have to change, or “you” have to accept your fate. No, now “we” can work together, not for ourselves, but for the type of society that God wants us to have: a society where workers are respected and paid well, where greed becomes generosity and “Me first” becomes “all of us together.” Under Christ’s yoke, Christian Marriage is the vocation of equals who love each other and plant the seeds of justice in their children’s hearts. Yoked together, we make a way for those who are hurting to be healed—and we don’t demean them for being immigrants. If we are together, we do not need to fear someone’s race or gender or faith or language. The police work with the community to build a safer city. The poor receive enough resources and education to avoid a life of crime and the rich learn how much they do not need to possess for themselves. Finally, no person is treated as less than any other, and life is protected from its conception until its end. Sadly, Mr. Jefferson did not think to put Christ into the Declaration of Independence. Yes, he talked about our “Creator,” but only in general terms. If only he had read today’s passage from Matthew, we might not be so tired today ourselves. Thankfully, we are not stopped by Mr. Jefferson’s limitations. We can take upon ourselves the yoke of Christ, pledging to work with one another and all those around us to build a better society. If we all work together, it will seem very easy indeed! Peace,
LA MEDIDA DE LA MERCED
Puede que hoy no esté bien descansado. Ayer fue el 4 de julio y si la historia es cualquier medida, demasiada gente comió demasiado, bebió demasiado e hizo demasiadas cosas tontas con petardos o armas de fuego. Lamentablemente, el Día de la Independencia en Chicago es más a menudo famosa por la violencia que provoca más que la celebración de que nuestra nación fue fundada sobre el principio de que todas las personas son creadas iguales (Sí, cambié la frase original porque era sexista y degradante). Por lo tanto, en

Las generaciones actuales celebran tomando demasiado el fin de semana alejándose de Dios y de la decencia humana. En este día en que estamos fatigados de nuestras celebraciones y agobiados por la violencia, el racismo y la injusticia que nos rodea, Jesús nos extiende una invitación especial. Él nos dice, “Vengan a mí”. ¿Fatigado de todas las peleas políticas? ¿Agobiado por un sistema que recompensa la injusticia y evita soluciones reales? ¿Le resulta más difícil llenarse de energía para alabar a Dios Padre que nos ha abierto los misterios de la felicidad y la esperanza? Entonces, “Vengan a mí”, dice el Señor, “y yo los aliviaré”. Hay un peligro connatural en la invitación: asumir el yugo sobre otro cuando acabamos de celebrar nuestra independencia. Sin embargo, ¿cuál es el “yugo” de Cristo si no un yugo que nos guía hacia la justicia y la igualdad, arar las calles de la ciudad con las semillas de la esperanza hacia la paz. Si estamos “unidos” juntos, entonces debemos unirnos para avanzar. “Yo” ya no tengo que cambiar o “usted” ya no tiene que aceptar su destino. No, ahora “nosotros” podemos trabajar juntos, no para nosotros mismos, sino para un tipo de sociedad que Dios quiere que tengamos: una sociedad donde los trabajadores son respetados y bien pagados, donde la codicia se convierte en generosidad y donde “Yo primero” se convierte en “todos nosotros juntos”. Bajo el yugo de Cristo, el matrimonio cristiano es la vocación de dos personas iguales que se aman y plantan las semillas de la justicia en el corazón de sus hijos. Juntos, hacemos un camino para que aquellos que están sufriendo sean sanados, y no los degradamos por ser inmigrantes. Si estamos juntos, no necesitamos temer la raza o el género o la fe o el lenguaje de alguien. La policía trabaja con la comunidad para construir una ciudad más segura. Los pobres reciben suficientes recursos y educación para evitar una vida de crimen, y los ricos aprenden cuánto no necesitan poseer para sí mismos. Finalmente, ninguna persona es tratada con inferioridad, y la vida está protegida desde su concepción hasta su final. Lamentablemente, el señor Jefferson no pensó en poner a Cristo en la Declaración de Independencia. Sí, habló de nuestro “Creador”, pero sólo en términos generales. Resumption of Public Masses What to expect:
1. HEPA filters are being installed to purify air in church.
2. Have enough volunteers to prepare, greet & guide parishioners through the Mass and sanitize space after every service.
3. Attendance capacity will be reduced to accommo-date social distancing guidelines (50 people at first, rising to 100 people and then more).
4. You will need tickets to enter Mass. 5. A phone-in-reservation system will be used. 6. Seniors, vulnerable people, sick should stay home. 7. Temperatures will be checked at door, masks are
required at all times and hand sanitizer. 8. Shrines and niches are closed to avoid possible
