Vibrant Semiconductor Ecosystem

AsakeypillarofSingapore’smanufacturingsector,semiconductorsrepresentthefastest-growingelectronicssegment.Frommodestbeginnings,Singapore’ssemiconductorsectorhasdevelopedintoavibrantecosystemwiththefullvaluechainofactivities.

Integrated Circuit Design Postgraduate Scholarship (ICPS)

TheSingaporeEconomicDevelopmentBoard(EDB)hasallocatedS$16milliontothisnewinitiative,aimedatencouragingstudentstotakeupICdesignatapostgraduate(MastersorPhD)levelwithinSingapore’stwomainuniversities,NanyangTechnologicalUniversity(NTU)andNationalUniversityofSingapore(NUS).TheICPSisexpectedtobenefit150ICdesignersbetween2009and2014,providing100%sponsorshipcoveringresearch,coursefeesandstipends.ICPSrecipientswillalsobeabletohonetheirdesignskillsthroughattachmentandtrainingopportunitieswithlocalcompanies.

Specialist Manpower Programme (SMP) IC Design

SMPICDesignisascholarshipsponsoringundergraduatesintheirfinalyearofstudiesinICdesign.Thescholarshipisco-fundedbyEDB(70%)andtheindustry(30%).Uponcompletionoftheirstudies, SMP recipients are required to serve a bond withthesponsoringcompany.

Recognisingthathumancapitaldriveseconomicgrowth,Singaporeiscommittedtonurturingskilledengineeringtalentthatmeetstheneedsofthesemiconductorindustry,withprogressivepartnershipsandprogrammes.

SingaporeUniversityofTechnologyandDesign•

Singapore’sfourthpublic-fundeduniversityhaschosenMassachusettsInstituteofTechnologytohelpdevelopitsscienceandtechnologycurriculumandkickstartmajorresearchprojects.LedbytheformerDeanoftheMITSchoolofEngineering,ProfessorThomasMagnanti,theuniversitywilladmititsfirstintakeof500studentsin 2011, eventually aiming to cater to 4000 undergraduateand2000graduatestudents.ItwillhouseaS$146millioninternationaldesigncentre,partneringMITtofusearchitecture,engineeringand information systems, aimed at providing technologicalsolutionsforissuesinSingaporeandtheregion.

Institute of Microelectronics (IME)•

AmemberoftheAgencyforScience,TechnologyandResearch(A*STAR),IMEperformscutting-edgeR&DacrossthesemiconductorvaluechaininareassuchasICandsystemdesign,semiconductorprocesstechnology,3Dpackagingandreliabilitytesting.IMEhasalsosetupprogrammestofocusitsR&Deffortsinnewtechnologiessuchasbioelectronics,MEMs,siliconphotonicsandnanoelectronics.Itseffortshaveenabledlocalenterprisestobecometechnologicallycompetitive,cultivatingatechnologytalentpooltoinjectnewknowledgetotheindustry.

VIRTUS, Singapore’s IC Design Centre of Excellence •

Thiscentreisacollaborationbetweenthreeparties-A*STAR,NTUandtheindustrythataimstotrainatleast50MEngand50PhDpostgraduatestudents in analog and mixed signal design over thenextfiveyears.Itwillalsodevelopkeytechnologiesinnewgrowthareassuchaslowpowermanagementandenergyharvesting,whichcouldserveaskeytechnologydriversformedicaltechnology,automotiveandconsumerelectronicsapplications.Thecentre’sestablishmentwill

enhanceSingapore’ssemiconductorecosystembyencouragingthegrowthofbothICdesignandmanufacturing activities in Singapore.

Solomon Systech Limited
