Save MoreThan Face

Anti-aging Makeover

Week 4Look at the Big Picture

Since you should already be starting to see a difference inthe mirror, why not pull out the full-length version

and apply what you've learned to the rest of your body?

Hands count, too: Ifyou're going to beoutside, apply SPF 30after washing.

Fatten UpNeed an excuse to make guacamole? The"good fats" in avocados help boost

skin's radiance-and usher in a host ofhealth benefits. Michael Roizen, chair

of the We/lness Institute at the ClevelandClinic, offers these guidelines: "Make

25 percent of your calories unsaturated fat, which is found in olive oil, avocados, and

tlsxseeds: eat an ounce of nuts most days;and eat fatty fish three times a week."I

There's a saying that if you wantto guess a woman's age, look at herhands. Our addendum: If she's

wearing gloves, check out her neck. The skin in both areas gets as muchexposure as the face but is even moredelicate. Here's how to pamper it.

• Protect and serve. As with yourface, the most important move is toapply sunscreen to your hands andneck every day. Remember that halfteaspoon rule? Squeeze out a secondone for the rest of your exposed skinand get rubhing. If you tend to washyour hands a lot during the day, keepa tube oflotion spiked with SPF, suchas Rodan + Fields Anti-Age Age ShieldHand Balm SPF 30, in your handbag .• Treat accordingly. You don't needproducts specifically made for theneck or decolletage. Face creams cando double duty, so don't stop apply-ing your nighttime retinol or morn-ing antioxidant when you hit your ~:"ijawline-and wipe the remainder on ••<the hacks of your hands. If you can see 15fine lines on your neck, pick a mois- ~turizer with a silicone like dimethi- ~..cone, or really anything ending in ~:;:"-cone." (We like Olay Complete Daily ~Defense SPF 30.) They fill in some of !!;-

Ithe ridges between cells and seal the ~skin so it looks smoother. ~z

BeautylOI a~Unclogging Your Pores

The desire to obliterate acne often goes hand in hand withthe desire to obliterate blackheads (those tiny black dotscaused by clogged oil and debris that has oxidized anddarkened within the pores). Here's how to carry out athorough unclogging without the red aftermath.

• Start with a scrub. Step one is to break down the sebumthat gets stuck in the pores and causes the blackhead, Usea 2 percent or less salicylic acid exfoliator every morning.Let it sit for about a minute on damp skin (this is importantbecause the acid needs time to work), then rinse. We likeOlay Pore Minimizing Cleanser & Scrub (olay.com).

• Extract them. Yes, you can go after these suckers at home. But don't even think about using your fingers to do it.After you shower (while skin is stili damp), hold a cottonswab on either side of the blackhead, then gently pressdown. If it doesn't budge, don't force it. Abort mission andapply a benzoyl peroxide spot treatment .:

• Grab the vacuum. Everything about the Bliss Pore-FectorGadget-right down to the name-sounds a bit gimmicky.Until you use it. The metal device loosens dirt and oil withsonic vibrations so you can gently scoop away the gunkwith the edge. Similarly, the new Rodan + Fields MacroExfoliator uses gentle suction to-remove dead skin cells.dirt, and oil (blissworld.com; rodanandfields.com).

The VaCUUIll PackExecutive beauty editor JENNY BAILLY powers up three

new at-home microdermabrasion machines.

My bathroom looks like a high-tech control station(mission: silky, glowing skin). Next to my Clarisonic skin-cleansing brush, which stands next to my Tria hairremoval laser (see "Beauty Adventures;' 2010), now standa trio of microdermabrasion devices. They mimic the

action of the popular spa treatment: loosening complexion-dulling deadskin cells with a crystal-encrusted disc, then vacuuming them away. Each has several levels of suction that let you customize the intensity ofyour exfoliation. (Trust me: Start slow.) The Rodan + Fields machine(above) is the most elaborate, with an LCD screen that indicates whereto glide the tool and a timer that beeps when I need to move on to a newarea of my face. It also has the most intense suction-after my five-minute treatment, I'm beet red. The next morning, though, makeupglides over my incredibly soft, clear skin. The Riiviva and PMDMicroderm (below) have similarly silkening effects. All three are meantto be used no more than once a week, and all three do the job. Butbecause it's light, cordless, and left my skin only slightly pink, the Riivivais the one that's going to score a permanent home at my personal skincareoperations center. *Do it ifyou ... don't have sensitive skin or rosacea.
