RF Filters for Mobile Applications - Datasheet
Enhance your mobile measurement tasks by increasing your instrument´s dynamic range with tailored, external RF filters
With help of Narda´s compact and rugged external RF filters, users can increase their instrument´s dynamic range,
focusing on distinct frequency bands and avoiding out-of-band overmodulation. Narda´s RF filters cover numerous
frequency bands and applications. Non-listed filters may be available on request.

Technical Background
It is often necessary to measure weak radio signals in the presence of strong radio signals. Analysis of weak radio signals
requires high measurement sensitivity, but this requirement rapidly leads to overmodulation of modern measuring receivers
and signal analyzers when receiving strong signals at the same time.
External filters that can be attached and detached from the analyzer input allow the input sensitivity to be maintained on a
frequency band selective basis. Such filters can be inserted between the antenna cable and the basic unit of the IDA. The
filter specification will depend on the measurement required. The two screenshots below show the effects of measuring
GSM-900 up- and downlink signals without (left) and with (right) an RF bandpass filter (880 - 915 MHz): On the right the filter
decreases the power of the strong downlink signals (925 - 960 MHz) at the RF input. That avoids overdrive and
overmodulation and it facilitates that weaker uplink signals in the filter´s pass band (880 - 915 MHz) can be detected.
In addition to the brief explanations above, Narda provides numerous Application and Technical Notes on its website. In
order to take advantage of the IDA´s attenuator, to understand the effects of Overdrive and to find out when and how ex-
ternal RF filters may be applied, refer to the following literature:
Technical Note TN104 – Maximizing dynamic range by optimizing the input attenuator setting
Technical Note TN110 – Using external filters to maintain measurement sensitivity in highly dynamic measurement
environments

Definitions and Conditions
Product Overview
The Narda RF filters are designed for typical applications in mobile
measurement scenarios. Therefore they cover distinct frequency bands for
example in the telecommunications area where strong downlink signals need
to be suppressed while focusing on weak uplink signals. Depending on the
frequency specification some RF filters may be larger, others may be smaller,
some may have both N-connectors on one side, others may have them on
opposite sides.
In any case, unless noted otherwise, all filters can be mounted on the IDA with
Narda´s mounting kit (including RF cable & hook-and-loop tape). For technical
reasons some filters, band stop filters in particular, are rather large. These
filters are noted as ´Oversize´. They can of course be used with the IDA but
they are not mountable on the IDA according to Narda´s filter mounting
recommendation. The ´Oversize´ filters are recommended to be used in
combination with two 1.5 m coax cables (see more details under Cabel, Coax
Type N (f/m) 1.5m, part number 3100/90.20) and to be carried separately.
All Narda RF filters come with N-connectors (one male, one female) directly
mate with the RF cable of the filter mounting kit and with the IDA set. The
typical insertion loss of Narda´s filter selection is below 2 dB. The VSWR is
typically less than or equal to 1.5:1. The given pass band for a bandpass filter
or stop band for a band stop filter specify the nominal and typical 1 dB transition
points.
The following pages stick in detail to Narda´s RF filters. The fields ́ Description´
or ´Usage´ mention the most likely application of each filter. The term ´Band
XY´ typically refers to a specific E-UTRA frequency band or a significant
portion of it. The abbreviation ´UL´ stands for Uplink, while ´DL´ stands for
Downlink. Filters which are dedicated to specific ITU regions (region 1, 2, or 3)
are called ITU-1/-2/-3. The diagrams depict Narda´s RF filter components with
typical characteristics. Production-related deviations may occur.
Conditions Unless otherwise noted, specifications apply after 30 minutes warm-
up time within the specified environmental conditions provided the
product is within the recommended calibration cycle.
Specifications with limits These describe product performance for the given parameter covered
by warranty. Specifications with limits (shown as <, ≤, >, ≥, ±, max.,
min.) apply under the given conditions for the product and are tested
during production, taking measurement uncertainty into account.
Specifications without limits These describe product performance for the given parameter covered
by warranty. Specifications without limits represent values with
negligible deviations which are ensured by design (e.g. dimensions or
resolution of a setting parameter).
Typical values (typ.) These characterize product performance for the given parameter that is not
covered by warranty. When stated as a range or as a limit (shown as <, ≤, >,
≥, ±, max., min.), they represent the performance met by approximately 80%
of the devices. Otherwise, they represent the mean value. The measurement
uncertainty is not taken into account.
Nominal values (nom.) These characterize expected product performance for the given parameter
that is not covered by warranty. Nominal values are verified during product
development but are not tested during production.
Uncertainties These characterize an interval for a given measure and estimated to have a
level of confidence of approximately 95 percent. Uncertainty is stated as the
standard uncertainty multiplied by the coverage factor k=2 based on the
normal distribution.
