Leaders from 15 states plus Canada and Puerto Rico attended the recently

completed round of RI National Training. Approximately 25 attendees used the RI

Training Manual in a series of two-hour phone conference trainings with four RI

trainers and guest speakers. Thanks go to all participants who contributed their

experience and techniques, from Rob Winike, Charlotte Moran, Monique Casbeer

and Scott Dixon. Some comments from recent attendees:

I did take notes. I did not have the Manual and /or Hand-out, but I understood all of the trainers. Your efforts were a good example of group-mindedness. I look forward to more.

I appreciated the part where you suggested we self-endorse with a pat on the back. I actually did it, and then, looking in the mirror, I realized I had a big smile on my face! Well done!

I am very grateful to be able to participate. I could tell that the trainers worked very hard to make this a success. The "Baby Manual" is well organized, very easy to understand and does a good job of explaining key concepts. The conversations after the session were really helpful.

I'm glad you had us endorse ourselves for working with the "technical difficulties" using the phone, *6 procedures, garbled voices, etc. (Maybe in your reminder emails before the next session, you could explain those procedures. Sarah's version was crystal clear.) Thanks again for offering these sessions.

I liked the first training session. I couldn't understand what you were saying sometimes. I wonder if you were too close to the microphone or if you were using the speaker mode in your phone. Just ideas. I plan to continue on with the rest of the meetings. Thank you very much to all the Trainers. Good job and much needed!!

Wow, I'm so glad this session is recorded - the topics are just what I need to learn

about. Since I couldn't participate today, the recording will be very helpful - unless, of course,

you've come out with some written material on this!

First of all, I must tell you that today's training session was The Best! So much participation,

so much clear, info-packed guidance. Thanks a million.

That was a great meeting today. The group was really working together, exchanging views and

experiences, which was very educational for me.

NEWCOMER’S CORNER:

Because we’ve all been beginners…

If you’ve only been to a few RI member meetings,

please check this summary of all the RI meetings in NW AREA #150. No matter where you

travel in the Northwest, you are in reach of an RI leader! If you’ve attended a meeting or two

give it another try.

When in symptoms, attend a meeting or make the call!

All RI leaders have common problems. We intend to use this newsletter to connect leaders

with the ideas and techniques that are working for other leaders and assistant leaders in the

broad network of RI meetings and conferences. Some of the issues we have discussed in the

course of our training this past fall are listed below. In the next two newsletters we’ll relate the

responses and strategies that were discussed for each issue. These were the issues we dealt

with at the final training session, a freestyle Q & A Workshop. Stay tuned for some valuable

ideas!

1. How to grow member meetings – in attendance and in the impact meetings are having

in your community.

2. How to grow your area, so you have more resources and manpower to increase the RI

presence in your communities.

3. How to recruit, train and motivate assistant leaders that can help you grow your

meetings and area.

4. How to get meeting materials such as books and workbooks.

5. How to get and pay for publicity materials.

6. How to put on panel presentations for more RI exposure in your community.

7. How to retain newcomers.

8. How to encourage more voluntary giving and membership in RI.

9. How to partner with community mental health groups.

10. How to find a new meeting location.

11. Where to look for funding.

LEADER’S CORNER:

Because Dr. Low said, “It had to be

done and it WAS done!”

Tools for Increasing RI Meeting

Membership and Attendance

Ideas that have worked for other leaders

With this month’s newsletter we offer a template of a flyer that has been used

successfully by leaders in Oregon, Washington and Montana. It’s called a Penny

Flyer in honor of the low cost of production – three two-sided flyers for pennies

each. Color, of course, is more expensive and far more attractive. You can modify

it to suit your needs, but make plenty so you and your members can distribute

them freely throughout the community. If you have problems copying this

template and adapting it for your use, email [email protected]

1. Copy the contents to a new file with a new name

2. Revise the information to fit the needs of your meeting and contact info

3. Print double sided so the front and back of the flyers line up

4. Cut flyers into thirds – they are narrow enough to fit in standard brochure

holders. If you post them on a community bulletin board you should post two –

front and back alongside each other
