The value of life is price-less.

Do you value life and embracethe precious moments you have re-maining in this world? At this verymoment in your life are you ableto reflect back and say to yourself“I lived life to my fullest poten-tial?” All too often life comes to anabrupt end and for some, thatmeans losing someone close anddear to their heart. You see friends, these past fewweeks have made me realize thetrue value of life. I’ve experiencedsorrow for personal friends whohave lost loved ones in their lives.I’ve experienced sorrow forfriends who are now experiencinglife changing conditions. I’ve ex-perienced joy for my father whotook his first steps in over threeyears. I’ve been thrilled to find outthat my sister will bring a new lifeinto this world. Through all ofthese situations I have come to re-alize how priceless life truly is andwe should be enjoying every mo-ment of it.The phrase, “life is too short,”has been made apparent to methese past few weeks and my hopeis that you and I embrace all as-

pects of life. What can you do today that en-hances the quality of life for some-one else? What is the one thingyou can do daily to make someoneelse’s day better? In my opinion, there is no betterfeeling than giving back. I haveexperienced the emotions thatcome with helping others and ithas helped me become a betterperson. So, I challenge you to go aboveand beyond the call of duty thisweek. Go out and do something thatwill make a lasting impact on afriend, family member, coworkeror partner. The end result is a hap-pier person who will carry on andhopefully do the same for others, which can all lead to a chain reac-tion and help fuel a positive envi-ronment that fuels a better Rialtoand a better you.

San Bernardino, like manyU.S. cities, prides itself onits rich historic past. The il-

lustrious Route 66 is one particu-lar historical item that continues tobe embedded in the minds andhearts of our city’s residents. The Great Race—the annual

cross-country competition that isscheduled to take place on June27—will bring back the aura of thecar culture that continues to takegreat precedence. City officials andcommunity leaders are workingdiligently to ensure the Race’s one-day stop in San Bernardino is onethat people won’t forget. One can already envision the

smell of chili and barbecue, tastethe strong hops of rich craftbrewed beer, and see the joy in thefaces of local children as they wit-ness antique roll through E Street.“We’re blessed to have partner-

ships that step up to help us as wetry to rebrand and revitalize down-town,” Valdivia told the SanBernardino Sun on February 3.“It’s events like this that send amessage.”The message is that the city of

San Bernardino is ready for reju-venation. Residents and leaderswill no longer stand idle to witnessthe city worsen due to fiscal crisis. As was expressed by Mayor CareyDavis during his State of the CityAddress on March 6, “I ran formayor so that I could lead the cityout of this disaster and the com-mon council and I are committedto turning this crisis into an oppor-tunity.”While skepticism remains re-

garding the mayor and commonc o u n c i l ’ s a b i l i t y t o b r i n g i n busi-nesses, job opportunities, reducecrime, and solve the homelessissue; many residents in recentmonths have rallied around city-wide efforts to promote stability

and foster community.

The community road shows thattook place throughout the month ofFebruary allowed residents to pro-vide dignitaries and SanBernardino City Unified SchoolDistrict officials their input on dif-ferent options and methods theycan use to improve the quality oflife in San Bernardino. Amongthem was the need to organizemore events geared towards boost-ing the morale of the common folk.Another event that saw a greatamount of community participa-tion was the KaBOOM Play-ground Build that took place in thefall. Over 200 volunteers—rangingfrom local university students tothe mayor himself—helped turnNinth Street Park into a modernplayground for young children onthe Westside.

As a younger resident, while ap-preciating the glamour and historyof Route 66, I recognize that in thelong run, a cultural shift away fromthe car culture may be looming. However, that does not imply thatthe significance of Route 66 willfade away. In speaking to artists and young

people in general, the city’s newbreed (my personal description ofSan Bernardino residents ages 18-30) yearns for creative expressionthrough music and murals. Theyacknowledge the importance of theroute to the city’s cultural develop-ment, and they believe the arts canexemplify this even further. CalState San Bernardino professorsTom McGovern and Juan Delgadoare aspiring to transform the win-dows and walls of the Arts on 5thbuilding, located near downtownSan Bernardino, into a visual struc-ture that will showcase the city’slong-standing fascination with theroad. San Bernardino should continue

to hold events like the Great Race, but also incorporate other intrigu-ing components such as muralpainting, concerts, and farmer’smarket simultaneously to increaseparticipation and inclusion amongresidents. In its 32nd year, the Great Race

has as adopted the interestingmotto, “Ride, Repair, Repeat.”This event, with swift and decisiveinput from everyone in SanBernardino, will provide a shot ofconfidence that the once All-Amer-ica city needs.

The Great Race: Theperfect catalyst forSan Bernardino’s

looming Art culture

In light of the unprecedentedcriminal activity on campus, Iwanted to reach out to each of youand let you know how we are ad-dressing and mitigating this im-portant issue. Earlier this morning,I produced a special video(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y2asWTp8NCo&feature=youtu.be) on this subject and I urge youto take the time to watch.

If need be, I have posted a tran-script of the video, below. Pleaseknow that CSUSB is committed tokeeping everyone across campussafe and sound.

Over the last two weeks, CSUSBhas experienced an unprecedentednumber of crimes on campus. This is incredibly disturbing, asthis university has long been amodel for campus safety, includ-ing being ranked amongst thesafest campuses in California. Asyou would imagine, a number offaculty, staff and students havecontacted me with their concerns.

There is little doubt that these ex-periences are hurting the confi-dence in safety that we expect, andthis is unacceptable. Let me be

clear – the safety of our campuscommunity is our HIGHEST pri-ority and I have instructed ourleadership team accordingly.

University Police staffing hasbeen more than doubled, 24 hoursa day, in response to these inci-dents, including bringing in addi-tional officers from other CSUcampuses to supplement our force.Expect to see a high level of policevisibility for the foreseeable fu-ture. It’s important for everyone toalso know that the suspect in-volved in the carjacking incidentis now behind bars, awaiting trial.

I have personally called on ourcity and county leaders to signifi-cantly increase their police pres-ence of the neighborhoodssurrounding CSUSB.

To that end, each of us has re-sponsibilities as well. Our policeforce can only do their job effec-tively if the community is doing itspart. All of us must commit tobeing more vigilant while on cam-pus and immediately reportinganything or anyone that appearsout of place. Pay closer attentionto details that we often take for

granted. Put away cell phones, head phones and other devices thatdistract us when moving about thecampus.

If possible, move around thecampus with a group or at leastone other person. This is espe-cially important during eveningsand weekends, when the campuscan be less populated. If need be,please contact University Police atthe number on your screen (909-537-5165) for an escort and theywill get to you as soon as possible. When in doubt, call University Po-lice immediately.

If anyone has information on themost recent incidents on campus, Iurge you to come forward and re-port it. Every communication wereceive will help to restore confi-dence in the safety of our campus.

We are a community! Let’s worktogether to ensure that CSUSBwill always be a great environ-ment to learn, work and live.Thank you!

High-speed rail system a waste ofmoney

Well, California is getting a bullettrain! Lakes are drying up; farmsare drying up; water levels all overare going down, but we are gettinga bullet train. Maybe the train canbring water from up north. Wewatch TV when it rains and see allthe runoff going to the ocean. You’d think with all the labor andskill in California that we could

store or divert that water to thelakes or storage facilities.

We could also build de-saltingplants all along the coast and pumpthe water to the lakes. With the bil-lions that Gov. Jerry Brown isgoing to spend on the bullet trainthat nobody wants or needs, hecould do something to help Cali-

fornia instead of wasting money ona bullet train.

Rudy Archuleta,San Dimas

Why California’s gas prices are so highCalifornia gas prices are up $1 in

a month for unnecessary reasons:The Torrance refinery is shut downfrom damages and other refineriesin the state are down to create thecostly summer blend.

The problem is that the state hasrefused to allow more refineries tobe built. Indeed, with onerous re-strictions against developing plen-

tiful state oil and gas resources, ourgas prices will continue to be thehighest in the nation. Worse, ex-treme California environmentalismis responsible for punishing AB 32carbon taxes that not only raise thecost of gas, but raise the overallcost of living in the state. Coupledwith environmentalist-caused highwater prices and Central/SouthernCalifornia water shortages, notfrom drought, and the insanity ofbig government over-regulation

and taxes, California is sadlycrashing in slow-motion.

Adding insult to injury, Califor-nia being a sanctuary state for ille-gal immigrants simply exacerbatesthe costs by billions, along with theproblems of domestic and nationalsecurity.

Words to Think About: The Magnificent Mt. Rushmore

By G. W. Abersold Ph.D.

Mount Rushmore is oneof the great iconic ex-amples of American in-

genuity in our history. Along withthe Panama Canal, the EmpireState building, the Seattle SpaceNeedle, Hoover Dam and theBloomington Mall in Minnesota. But Mt. Rushmore is unique inthat it is both historical and artistic. It is a masterpiece.Mt. Rushmore is located in theBlack Hills of South Dakota, nearthe city of Keystone. The moun-tain is mostly granite and wasnamed after Charles E. Rushmore,a prominent New York lawyer, after he and friends were on a

prospecting expedition in 1885.South Dakota historian DuaneRobinson is credited with the ideaof carving famous people in themountain to attract tourists to thearea.A long hassle involving NativeAmericans, Congressional dele-gates and President CalvinCoolidge’s approval was finallygiven by Congress and the carvingwas started in 1927, and ended in1941 with no fatalities.Gutson Borglum (Danish-Amer-ican) made the final decision ofMt. Rushmore and the decision tomake the national focus, ratherthan early western heroes likeLewis and Clark and Buffalo BillCody.Upon Gutson’s death in March1941, his son Lincoln Borglumtook over construction. The location was originallycalled “Six Grandfathers” by theLakota Sioux. In the construction 450,000 tonsof rocks were moved; 400 workersassisted Borglum and the sculptorswere 60 feet high. The National Park Service tookjurisdiction of Mt. Rushmore in1933. The entire project cost$989,992.32. On October 15, 1966Mt. Rushmore was listed on the

National Register of HistoricPlaces. In 2012 there were2,185,447 visitors to the mountain.George Washington’s (1732-

1799) face was dedicated on July4, 1934. The face of Thomas Jef-ferson (1743-1826) was dedicatedin 1936. The face of Abraham Lin-coln (1809-1865) was dedicatedon September 17, 1937. The faceof Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919) was dedicated in 1939.The historical accomplishments

of the four honored Presidents arewell known. Washington is called“the father of our country.” How-ever, our first President led thecolonial forces to victory in theRevolutionary War. He refused toserve more than two terms.Thomas Jefferson wrote the Dec-

laration of Independence andstarted the University of Virginia.Abraham Lincoln wrote the Get-tysburg Address, freed the slavesand was assassinated. TheodoreRoosevelt broke up the businessmonopolies and was the 26th Pres-ident.However, there are several inter-esting facts about the four Presi-dents that are not commonlyknown.George Washington-In his teenstraveled to Barbados and through

his half-brother he was friendswith the British Admiral Vernon. The brother served under him.Washington was the victim ofchickenpox. On the dollar bill, no-tice the right side of his face forpock marks. He also had falseteeth, made of wood.He was elected President unani-mously. He never attended collegeand was an Episcopalian.Thomas Jefferson was the thirdPresident. He was responsible forthe Louisiana Purchase and theLewis and Clark expedition. Hewas an architect, a lawyer, afarmer, an unusually excellent vi-olinist and author. He was also a biblical scholar,

and composed a New Testamentwithout the miracles of Jesus. Formany years a copy was given toeach new Congressman.Jefferson never vetoed a bill andwas described by his peers as a ter-rible speaker. He was a shabbydresser. Extremely intelligent, hewas always in debt.Abraham Lincoln-He was ourtallest President-6 feet 4 inches.By the way, James madison wasthe shortest-5 feet 4 inches.Lincoln was the 16th president ofthe United States. He often waspictured with a stovepipe hat-it re-

sembled a length of pipe. He uti-lized it to store and carry notes, let-ters, bills and importantdocuments. He has no living heirs. Three of

his four sons died before their 20thbirthdays. He often described him-self as being spiritual but not reli-gious.Theodore Roosevelt-He was the

fifth cousin removed of FranklinDelano Roosevelt. Also, the uncleof Eleanor and gave her away toF.D.R. at their wedding. In 1906 he was awarded theNobel Peace Prize, and was alsothe first President to visit a foreigncountry while President. He trav-eled to Panama.Get this. He often would goskinny-dipping in the PotomacRiver during the wintertime. A few years ago Stella and I vis-ited Mount Rushmore and wereoverwhelmed with its awesome-ness and beauty. There is a largecafeteria in front of it-about thedistance of a football field. Thescars on Washington’s face areclear. If you haven’t been there, pleasedo; you won’t regret it.Amen. Selah. So be it.

Aguilar holdsswearing in ceremony

By Anthony Victoria,Community Writer

Congressman Pete Aguilar(D-Rancho Cucamonga)held a swearing in cere-

mony at San Manuel Stadium inSan Bernardino on SaturdayMarch 7.Hundreds were in attendance tohear Aguilar speak about his com-mitment to improve the quality oflife in the Inland Empire and hiswillingness to take on non-partisanefforts in Washington D.C.“I will always have the best inter-ests of our working families atheart and always keep an opendoor and mind to work with anymember of any party because thatmeans I’m working for you,”Aguilar said. “Since taking office,I have had the opportunity to workon both sides of the aisle to ad-dress problems facing workingfamilies today so together we cancreate a more fair and just soci-ety.”Among the dignitaries presentwere San Bernardino City MayorCarey Davis, former RedlandsMayor Carole Beswick, currentRedlands Mayor Paul Foster andAssemblywoman Cheryl Brown(D-San Bernardino).“There’s 435 people who holdoffice in the U.S. House of Repre-sentatives every two years,” saidCalifornia State Secretary AlexPadilla (D-Pacoima), who con-ducted the swearing in for Aguilar.

“There’s only one person who cando it here in San Bernardino. Ihave known about his commit-ment to public service for years. It’s an honor for me to be here sup-porting Pete.”Susana Salas-Rodriguez,Aguilar’s eighth grade teacher andone of many mentors who havehelped the congressman through-out his life, said to Aguilar that sheis assured he can assist the resi-dents who supported and voted forhim during last year’s election. “We hope that those that weelected and voted for will value us,so the life that we all share can bebetter,” she said. “Pete, do not for-get that in the end, it is the teacher, doctor, police officer, janitor, smallbusiness owner, labor union mem-ber, and parents that sent you to dothe job. Align your votes with theirvalues...I know we have elected agood man, whose heart knows hu-mility and self confidence willlead the great challenge that wehave set before him.”However, members of We thePeople, California’s Crusader—the Claremont-based group thatopposes Illegal Immigration—saidAguilar is spending too much timerepresenting people who the groupperceives as law breakers. “The American people are suffer-ing. They are unemployed andhomeless,” said We the Peoplemember Robin Hvidston. “We’rehere to say that he needs to supportAmerican workers.”

“I advocate for immigration, butlegal immigration,” said Dr. SamWong of Redlands. “Pete does notrepresent all of Redlands. He triesto be partisan, but he is not.”

Lorraine Velarde's voice soothedSan Bernardino during chaotic times

By Harvey M. Kahn

When J. Lorraine Ve-larde died on Feb. 28she left with more

knowledge regarding the inter-workings of San Bernardino citygovernment then anyone of herera. She served as chief of staff fortwo of the better known mayors incity history. For Velarde to haveworked for Bob Holcomb andTom Minor for a combined 16years through the 1980's and 90'swas testament to her diplomacy. Both were respected but known tobe difficult. Velarde was theirangel and any secrets she knewwent with her into heaven.Velarde, who lived to be 69, wasa St. Bernardine's High Schoolalumnus. Friends and family weretoo civil to say, but reading Ve-larde's bio shows she was over-worked by Holcomb and Minor.Family said she enjoyed nearlyevery minute of it and likewise cityhall appreciated her ability to keepquiet about sensitive off-the-record, closed session topics. She was often left to fend for her-self when Holcomb and Minorcould not answer reporters aboutimportant city issues. It wasn't inher job description, yet Velardecould adeptly take on the role of fi-nancial analyst and then quicklytransition into a press secretary. She was THEE go-to person at cityhall. Velarde was able to describe inconcise terms such topics as rede-velopment, construction blueprintsand line items in annual reports. Itwas Velarde, not the mayors whoanswered questions about the com-plex $63 million superblock bondissue in 1996. "Those issues wereher passion. You didn't get any BSfrom her," said her younger sisterLydia Whitehead.

"She knew what she was doingand always wanted to do what wasbest for the city. She never put themayors or herself out on a limb. Ilearned how to conduct myself asa professional from Lorraine," saidWhitehead. She remembered hersister never wanting to travel oncity business because she didn'twant the city to pay for additionalexpenses. Whitehead rememberedher sister saying she realized somein city hall disliked her, but thosesame people could still respect her."She knew the difference. Evenher political opponents will be ather funeral (that was held March10)." As more complex topics aboutcity fiscal affairs were escalatingin the mid-1990's, It was Velardeagain who explained to the mediawhy there were delays in complet-ing projects in the city like the $11million shopping center on Mt.Vernon and the new $13 millionprofessional baseball stadium.About that same time, Velarde wascalled in to soothe residents duringtense labor negotiations betweenthe city and police. In a April 1997newspaper article, Velarde tried towarn a city budget committeeabout serious deficits that loomed. Whitehead said her sister's tactand desire to serve the city waslearned from her parents, Hectorand Clara O'Campo. From 1960 todate, there was not a time when atleast one O'Campo did not serveon a city commission, as a studentbody president, a Little League of-ficial, or serve in law enforcement.A teenaged Lorraine O'Campoworked in the local John F.Kennedy presidential campaignwith her parents. Then later onRobert Kennedy's presidentialcampaign. "We all knocked ondoors for the Kennedy's as a fam-ily," said Velarde's younger brotherWalter O'Campo. In the last four years, Velardejoined a family tradition of volun-teering with Little League by host-ing the Oregon team of12-year-old girls when they cometo San Bernardino to play in theWestern Regional Tournament.Walter O'Campo said his sisterretired from the city about tenyears ago but continued to work invarious capacities as a liaison be-tween the city and private agen-cies. "She was always extremelyactive and remained so until theend. I watched her direct boardmeetings and learned from herhow to be politically savvy." O'-Campo felt his sister had to learnout of necessity how to navigatethe mayor's office. At one point,O'Campo demanded to city admin-istrators that his exhausted sisterget a long overdo vacation. "Ithrew her stuff in my van and wewent on a 10-day road trip," saidO'Campo. "Lorraine will be sadlymissed. This a big loss." Velarde was preceded in death by

her father, Hector and brotherRoger. Whitehead said her mother,Clara, who recently celebrated her90th birthday is actually doingwell under the circumstances. "She

is just trying to get through this. Itseems unfair that a mother wouldbury two of her children," saidWhitehead. Velarde is also sur-vived by daughter Letisha Velarde,

son Cristiferr Velarde, anotherbrother, Hector, Jr. and sister Cyn-thia Buttram. She has four grand-children and many nieces andnephews.

The boy’s basketball teamfrom Redlands East Val-ley played David to

Compton’s Goliath, but this timeGoliath won. Giving up a significant size ad-vantage the Wildcats were physi-cally overwhelmed, causing theirunprecedented season to end witha 63-48 loss to the Tarbabes in theCIF-SS Division 2A championshipgame at Honda Center on Satur-day. Compton (21-10) featured fivestarters over 6-3 while REV (25-7)

has only one starter over 6-2 (KimAiken is 6-5).It took little time for the size dif-ference to doom the Wildcats, asthe Tarbabes inside presence led tomultiple rebounds and extra shots.Compton out-rebound REV 52-29in the game. “I thought Compton was veryathletic,” said REV head coachBill Berich. “They dominatedboards, especially in the first half.We knew that coming in but wehadn’t seen them in person. They’re a very big team.”Coupled with the trouble re-bounding, REV’s offense came out

cold in the first half. Being held tojust 22 percent from the field, in-cluding an uncharacteristic 0-for-8from 3-point territory, led to a 27-13 halftime deficit. The Wildcats showed signs oflife late behind three 3-pointers byAlex Ziska, staging a 20-3 run latein the fourth, but it was too littletoo late. Overall, REV was just 16 of 58(27.6 percent) from the floor andmade just 4 of 18 shots from three.Chris Harper led the Wildcatswith 20 points and had a team-highseven rebounds. Despite the loss, the seasonmarked not only the program’sfirst appearance in a championshipgame, but it was Berich’s first ap-pearance in a title game during his25-year career that has includedover 300 wins. “We won 25 games, we won twotournaments and we played in theCIF championship. It may stingbut it’s still great to be here withthis great group of kids,” Berichsaid of his team. The win had special meaning toCompton coach Tony Thomas.“To watch the city go through the60s and the 70s, and all the drugsand gangs, to see the transition, it’sgood to see the school pull itthrough,” Robert Lewis led Compton with16 points.
