Gospel Reading Matthew 13:44-52 (shorter form: Matthew 13:44-46)

Jesus teaches about the Kingdom of Heaven.

Background on the Gospel Reading By Loyola Press

Today’s Gospel concludes three weeks of readings from the 13th Chapter of Matthew’s Gospel. Through-out these three weeks we have heard Jesus teaching crowds about the kingdom of heaven, and we have heard Jesus interpret some of his teachings for the dis-ciples. In this week’s Gospel, Jesus offers three more short parables. The first two parables describe the great value of the kingdom of heaven. In the first parable, Jesus says that the kingdom of heaven is like a buried treasure that is worth possessing even if it means giving up everything else. In the second parable, Jesus proposes that the kingdom of heaven is like a pearl of great worth for which one will sell everything else to pos-sess. These parables teach us that we are to place eve-rything we value in the service of the pursuit of the Kingdom of God. The third parable that Jesus proposes in today’s Gospel is different from the first two, but it is reminis-cent of the parable of the sower heard in last week’s Gospel. The kingdom of heaven is compared to fish-ing with a wide net. After the fish have been collected, the good fish are kept and the bad fish are thrown away; so too, in the final judgment, will the wicked and the righteous be separated.

Today’s Gospel concludes with a curious statement about the scribe who understands the kingdom of

heaven. Here a metaphor is offered: this scribe is like the head of a household who “brings from his store-room both the new and the old.” The scribes referred to here are experts of Mosaic law. It is possible that

Jesus is here instructing the early Christian communi-ty on how to proceed in the interpretation of Jewish law with respect to Jesus’ “new” teaching. Jesus’

teaching about the kingdom of heaven does not replace the Jewish tradition; it

interprets it in a dif-ferent light.

Worship/Spiritual Life

“Do you understand all these things?” Jesus spoke Aramaic. The Torah was written in He-brew, developed from Aramaic. Writing was the work of the “scribes” and few others, including Pharisee and Sadducees, could read and write. It is unlikely that Jesus or his disciples could read and write. Je-sus taught in parables with images from the his world that his followers they could understand and remem-ber. They returned to their homes and retold the sto-ries and passed on the message to their family and friends as they sat around their fires and cooking pots. They did not have TV’s, cell phones, comput-ers, etc to distract them. The people who heard Je-sus teach that the kingdom is like a treasure buried in a field or a full net from which the fisherman saves the good and discards the bad fish, received that message with great joy. It gave them hope that they could attain the Kingdom of God by keeping God’s Commandments. Do we hear that message? Do we understand that message? Do we share their hope? Do we act accordingly?

How did the disciples recognize Moses and Elijah at the Transfiguration?

The Gospels do not explain how the disciples were able to recognize Moses and Elijah at the Transfiguration, so any answer is a guess. We celebrate this feast next week on August 6th.

Possible ways the disciples were able to recognize Moses and Elijah:

Jesus referred to them by name in his conversation with them, and the disciples overheard it. The disciples overheard the conversation, and the context informed them with whom Jesus was speaking. They had something unique about their appearance that made them readily recognizable (Exodus 34:29; 2 Kings 1:8). There was some sort of heavenly announcement that wasn’t recorded in the Gospels. Jesus explained to the disciples who they were. They were divinely inspired to recognize them, similar to God’s revelation to Peter that Jesus is the messiah. ~ From Catholic Answers—catholic.com/qa/ ~
