In August Riddle PTA conducted the annual fundraiser. The money is used to pay for all field trip expenses and assemblies. All students go on at least two field trips each year and, because of support from PTA, we never ask families to send money for entry fees or bus costs. The fundraiser usually generates enough money to sup- port a special project each year, too. In past years PTA has provided a pavilion near the arboretum and playground equipment. This year PTA’s special project is an elec- tronic message sign. The goal is to erect a sign that is as small and unobtrusive as possible while still being big enough to get the job done. It is to be of high quality and provide reliable service for a minimum of 20 years with low maintenance. Funding is 100% community donations. No District funds. PTA sought bids from sign companies in Louisville, St. Louis, and Mattoon. I am very pleased that Monitor Sign of Mattoon is the successful bidder. Dave Cornell, owner, has built a company with a reputation for quality work and reliable service. He lives in Mattoon, as do most of his employees. Keeping the fundraiser money in the local economy is good for everyone. The sign is up. The final wiring is coming soon. Please drive by and check it out. It will be a good addition to expand our means of communicating with the Riddle Community As always, Riddle PTA is awesome. Sincerely, Bruce E. Barnard Bruce E. F i r s t Graders in Mrs. Sweitzer’s class are travel ing around the world, exploring different habitats within the seven conti-nents. They are having a blast reading and ex-perimenting with what it is like to be a penguin liv-

ing in A n t a r c -tica or a seahorse living in the Great Barrier Reef of Australia. Mrs. Sweitzer’s students will continue their adventures as they read, write, and explore about the world!

As the fourth quarter of our 2012-2013 continues, Physical Education classes at Riddle Ele-mentary School look forward to spending our time outside with physical activity. The fresh air and sunshine are very welcomed after spending the long winter months in the gymnasium. Please remember daily tennis shoes and jackets are necessary. Several special days are scheduled for our Riddle Physical Education classes. On April 9th the Sarah Bush Lincoln Healthy Kids educator, Sarah Betts, and assistants will bring the KickStart Mobile and a presentation for our students on making healthy food choices and the importance of leading an active lifestyle. Be sure to ask your children about the KickStart Mobile and set aside some time to view the healthy information that will be sent home. Riddle Physical Education students will also have a chance to participate in a school-wide service project with the American Cancer Society. Alicia Pettyjohn, ACS representative, will do a presentation on April 15th and April 19th to educate all Riddle P.E. classes on the importance of taking good care of your body as a pre-ventative to cancer. Students will have one week during April to bring in monetary donations to be given to American Cancer Society. Thank you for supporting this cause.

On Friday, Feb. 22, eleven Riddle students had a special opportunity. They had each read 18 of the 20 Illinois Reader’s Choice Bluestem books and earned the privilege of a field trip to Barnes and Noble to help select books for the library. They were asked to carefully select books for the Riddle K-5 population and were given a budget. It was excit-ing, and sometimes tough to decide just what to get. These students got their names on nameplates inside the selected books and had the chance to be the first to borrow and read them. It was an exciting day! Those who went on the trip were: Tamaria Range, Dalton Compton, Houstis Haldorsen, Nathanial Carter, Kennedy Bateman, Kaleb Johanpeter, Gracie Earp, Korbyn Foss, Emmy Barr, Alyssa Garcia, Mrs. Muzzy, and Mrs. Hamilton. Chandler Rhine was unable to go on the trip.

Every year we do three fundraisers. In August we sell you products, usually candy, and use the money to pay for field trips, assemblies, and playground equipment. This year it will pay for the electronic sign you see being installed near Western Avenue. In November we do a penny drive for the Mattoon Food Bank. Each spring we collect money for a national charitable organization. We get many requests from these organizations, all very important causes, so, to be fair, we rotate the organization. Last year we did the American Heart Association. The year before was St. Jude’s Hospital. This year we are doing a penny drive to support the American Cancer Society. During the week of April 15, students will have lessons during Physical Education classes about healthy eating and physical activities they can engage in to help prevent cancer. They will also be invited to participate in the penny drive. Participation in the penny drive is strictly optional and children will be guided to talk about their participation with their parents/guardians. At the end of the week we will count the money and send a check to the American Cancer Society. This is not a competition and there are no “prizes”. We simply want the children to know they can be helpful to others. Your consideration is appreciated. If you have any questions please feel free to call 238-3800.

Two Riddle teachers have been recognized by Eastern Illinois University for their educational research on the development of specialized instruc-tional techniques. Melissa Blackwell (Kindergarten Teacher) and Amanda Gibson (4th Grade Teacher) will each be honored for their research projects at the Scholarship Recognition Ceremony on April 5th at EIU. Thank you for your work to continue the advancement of quality education for our students.

Did you know that narwhals are known as the unicorn of the sea? Have you heard that flamingos are born white? Students in Mrs. Draughan’s class do. This year students learned about a different animal each week—one for every letter of the alphabet. After learning some interesting facts about the animals, students then wrote a sentence about each animal and created a handprint version of it. In the end, the pages were compiled into an Animal ABC book. Students were excited to be the author and illustrator of their very own story while learning some amazing information about animals on our planet!
