The fifth grade States Fair was a big success. On Wednesday, May 23, many visitors came to the River Ridge multipupose room for a tour of the fifth grade States Fair booths. The students were dressed as a famous person in history from their state and gave speeches about their state. Tri-folds displayed information the students received in the mail from their respective states, along with brochures, souvenirs, and delicious foods from the state. Students showed their creativity through design posters, history writings, and power point presentations. Thank you to the middle school staff for helping the students set up and prepare for the big day. Also, a special thank you to everyone who took time to visit our booths. We really appreciated your time and kind words.

Memorial Day Program 2018By: Shawn Chatfield and Rebecca Bjurquist
After spending months of researching veterans, typing reports, practic-ing their skits and lines almost on a daily basis since the end of March, it all culminated into one spectacular day! Third graders at River Ridge Elementary held a Memorial Day Program on May 22. Students sang songs, participated in skits, and recognized veterans from their family and other acquaintances. The third grade class wanted to recognize all of the work and sacrifices our veterans have done to keep our country safe.
The students did an excellent job with this program, and they developed a more in-depth understanding of what veterans do, which translated into a greater appreciation. Parents, family, and friends were in the audience. Veterans were also present.
We would like thank all school personnel who made this program pos-sible; it could not have been done without any of you. Another thank you goes out to the parents and grandparents for working with their children on this project. A special thank you goes to the kitchen staff for making the snacks. Thank you to Hardees in Prairie du Chien for donating orange juice.
A tremendous amount of gratitude goes to the veterans for attending our program, donating flags, and for everything they have done and continue to do for our country.

INTERNET SAFETY: IMPORTANT MESSAGE FOR PARENTS AND CAREGIVERSAs the end of the school year is approaching, we want to express the importance of continuing to monitor your student’s online activity during the summer months. While the internet is a wonderful way to communicate, work, network, along with countless other advantages, it poses many dangers as well. A small sample of these being chatrooms, online forums promoting self-harm and suicide, bullying, threats, predators, posting or sharing of hurtful or threatening messages, and inap-propriate photos/videos being uploaded to social net-working sites/Apps such as SnapChat, Instagram, Face-book, Facebook Live, and youTube.
What we see the most at school is the aftermath of things that are happening after school hours. These include: cyberbullying or cyber-threats, inappropriate chatroom conversations, inappropriate photos being exchanged, shared, or uploaded to social media sites.
As parents and caregivers we need to be proactively in-volved in our children’s internet world more than ever before. Safeguards can be put in place to reasonably and effectively address these concerns. Here are some common suggestions we’ve found to be helpful:
1. Computer Placement- Put the computer and other electronic devices in a central family room to more easily monitor online activities. Have your student do online homework and social media activities in the common area of the home.
2. Adult supervision- There is no substitute for pa-rental supervision of the internet. It is the MOST effective way to keep kids safe.3. Safety Tips- Discuss safety rules and commu-nicate your expectations about internet use. your child needs to know not to arrange meetings or give out personal information or photos to strangers via e-mail, social media sites, or chat rooms.
4. Checking- Check your student’s internet history on all of their devices and explore each application (App) they download on their phone or other devices.
5. Filtering Information- use technology to help you block, monitor, and control your child’s access to inappropriate or illegal information on the internet.
To learn more about Internet safety, visit the following web sites:
• Safekids.com• Internet.Safety.com• www.kids.usa.gov
We hope you find this information helpful. By working together we can safeguard our youth as well as guide them to take advantage of the enormous potential that the internet has to offer.
