• Key Elements of RNP
– Specified level of performance and capability
– Flight path conformance with high degree of
accuracy and repeatability
– Procedure design flexibility around airspace
and obstacles through the missed approach
Required Navigation Performance (RNP)
• RNP is RNAV which incorporates:
– Reduced obstacle clearance areas
– Constant radius, curved flight paths
– Lateral/vertical guidance
Onboard avionics keep aircraft
within a tightly specified
airspace corridor
RNP is a statement of th e
navigat ion performance (in n aut ical
miles) necessary for o perations
with in a def ined airspace

Characteristics of an RNP AR Approach
• GPS is the required navigation sensor
• Constant radius turns (radius to fix - RF
legs may be required)
• Temperature limits are required due to
Baro-VNAV
– Temp compensation capability eliminates limits

Characteristics of an RNP AR Approach
• RNP AR approach procedures can have
up to 4 lines of minima (RNP 0.3 – 0.1)
– Will include lines of minima for RNP 0.3 if
possible
– When beneficial procedure designers will
include lines of minima for lower RNP values – RNP 0.1 is the lowest allowed
An AR / SAAAR approach will
always be clearly labeled as such
