Thank you ladies and gentlemen, I am obviously one of the many Kims in Korea and I work for LG Electronics. Just in case you don't know what LG stands for: Ladies & Gentlemen. So we are ready to serve customers. For this session I would like you to break with your perception of what companies like LG do, for example you might think that LG is a pure manufacturer of interesting cell phones and big screen TVs but for this session I would like to focus on delivering a home network solution. 20 years ago the PC was a stand-alone device and the only communication mechanisms were the floppy disks, moving from one PC to another. But now as a result of digital convergence and networking capabilities happening inside the home, other white goods and home automation devices want to be connected to make a simple convergence network. That means “home” becomes smarter than before and LG Electronics wants to become a home network solution provider.

HomNet is our brand name, so this is not a typo. The picture you see here represents our existing solution, it is not our futuristic home network solution, we are delivering this solution today. Actually today is the move-in day for one of our sites. Our home network consists of several parts: an inside-the-home solution and a community-based solution. As you know Korea has multiple big high rise apartment complexes. The complexes normally consist from 100 housing units up to 2,000. Outside the community we have the so-called content world where you work with service providers, wireless-providers or content providers. For you cablemakers, you should know that we put optical fiber cables all the way to the community network and then through the community network we put high-end Cisco routers as well as metro access routers. We put fiber all the way to the individual building, in some cases all the way to the individual house. In the individual house, home networking is based on so-called structured wiring in a sense that every room has an outlet for RG45. Inside the home you have a central device called HomNet server, with a large 12” touch screen for all the controls at your home. You also have physical media like power lines, RS485 or structured wiring based on Ethernet cables. We have other control servers like HomNet digital TV, a remote control and a web pad, which you can carry and operate your home. Traditional home automation devices include sensors, light controllers and remote metering. Utilities don’t have to dispatch people to your home, they can read your water and electricity usage from their offices through our system. Our solution is not limited to home automation only, we expand our solution to include home entertainment solutions based on all the digital media devices LG is making today, as well as all the white goods like dishwashers and gas ovens which are connected to the HomNet Server. Outside the community we put community local servers which have communication to the individual home servers, so you can use either your PC or your cell phone to see what is happening in your house or to execute control.

These are some actual deployment cases. In this project we put fiber to deliver 155 Mbps to the complex, within the complex we use various optical fiber cables and every home has Ethernet based structured wiring. This particular place has a PDA as a remote control, so people can you use their PDA to control air conditioners or turn off the gas.

What we have learned ……

Trends show that about 40% of newly-built houses will be equipped withhome network solution in one way or another. Statistics show that the adoption rate will go up as time goes on.

All the houses we installed LG HomNet solution have structured wiringwith Fiber or CAT5 UTP cable to provide high-speed content distribution.- Bandwidth requirement will only go up as demand for HD content distributiongoes up.

I was asked to tell you about the lessons we learned in Home Networks. I have summarized the comments we got from our customers and we have tried incorporating them into our next version of our home network. All the houses we operate today have optical fiber cables or CAT5 UTP cables, so they are literally based on structured wiring. In the previous session Mr. Mack mentioned fiber optic installers. LG Electronics is becoming a fiber optic installer as well.

Basic Home Network

Current Home Network is a stepping stone towards uHome- Having BC2 (Box, Content, and Connection) will be the key to success.- We assume that every home will be connected with high-speed network.

So where are we right now? We are somewhere between the basic home network system, or you can call it home automation, and moving towards the ubiquitous home. We all have different expectations of what a ubiquitous home will look like. Some people think that everything has to be connected and then the house should be smart enough to recognize you and to serve you in whatever you do. But the reality is that we may have to be satisfied with the “near uHome” solution, meaning we are somewhere in between. I believe we are in the boundary between B.C. and A,C., meaning before content or basic content and after content or advanced content. With all the home networking infrastructure you have today, you do need a basic or advanced content to serve your customers. I hope for you folks, this will become before cable and after cable.

Boxes will become “intelligent” and start talking to you:- If any box is not “intelligent” enough, it will not survive the market.- HomNet server monitors your home and let you know when things happen.- HomNet remocon listens to other devices and keep you updated with the status.- Your PCs and cell phones let you know what’s going on in your home.

More Boxes will be “intelligent” enough to deliver personalized Content:- TV will not be a dumb box. It will become an Intelligent home server and

provide bigger (compared to PCs) window to/from outside Home.- Home Theaters will not just play recorded music but also go out to the Internet

and get the right music for you.- Portable Media Players will know where the content is located inside/outside

your home and get the right one for you.

There are basically 3 key elements for us to move into the uHome: they are box, content and connection. Cablemakers like you will deliver high-end cables and give us a high-bandwidth connection. We are responsible for delivering an intelligent box and work with the content provider to deliver the content. You know LG Electronics is making a very interesting box today but the box will be an intelligent Lego brick in a way that you can just go to places like Bestbuy and buy all the digital media and put those media devices into your home and all of a sudden they start talking to you. For example you may have a home theatre system: today you start your CD player to listen to music, in the future you go onto the internet and start searching for music or video clips and will get that content delivered to you from the content providers. Today the digital TV is just for tuning the digital TV signal from the broadcasting systems. But eventually it will be a window for you to go into the outside world.

Digital TV Portal Service is targeted for Digital TV users.

So how do we provide the content into your home? We are working to deliver a digital TV portal service in Korea, which is different from the IP TV service provided in the US by companies like SBC and Verizon. Our target is to provide digital TV quality contents either through the setup box or digital TV. In order to do that we are heavily working with the content providers. Our content, unlike the US, is not only limited to voice and video. We are working on delivering advanced contents like shopping, e-learning, home media services and even VoIP services.

Our HomNet Solution is focused on delivering contents in two ways: For the entertainment side we are currently relying on the Ethernet based wired communication mechanism, but we are not limited to a wiredsolution. We are moving into a wireless communication but wireless has a little bit of a restriction in terms of the interaction with your neighbors. I showed your our site with 1,800 households, where we put an access point for every individual household. It would be a huge wireless hotspot without any encryption resulting in a lot of interference in your household. Therefore, for now I believe that content distribution at home will be limited to wired based solutions either via high-speed power line or Ethernet communication.

Moving to uHome should be proceeded by solving the following issues:

I would like to conclude my presentation by mentioning a few issues to think about before moving to the ubiquitous home. In order to move to the futuristic society we do have to resolve a variety of issues, for example, simple binding technology. Today if you buy a gadget and want to install it in your home, it's very hard because you are likely to have many set-top boxes and they are difficult to wire. For the network environment to recognize you at home you need to have sensors which inter-operate with each other, you need a high-speed infrastructure in your home. You need energy conservation, personalized services, body-embedded computing devices and so on. Before moving on to the uHome we need to resolve these issues but remember: We are not waiting for this to happen, we are integrating solutions and start delivering these services to people.
