Highlighting RHS Class Of 2017… REGIONAL REPORT Rothsay, Minn. PAGE 4 2017 January Edition By: Makayla Webster The Rothsay High School was lucky enough to keep the elective class, “Robotics” for a second year. Kyle Blanchard, the STEM and a math teacher for Rothsay, leads this class. The class is made up of 20 students, with six of them, returning from last year. Travis Stramer, David Brant, Damian Bartelson, Miles Mudderman, Tahren Peterson and Matthew Weets. This year the Robotics class has 15 new people joining the Robotics team, seven of them seniors, five juniors and for the first time three sophomores were allowed to take part in this class. The Robotics team this year has five females and 15 males. It creates a good mix for the class. The school year of 2016-2017 includes the projects like VEX Robotics curriculum. This is how to build and construct robots. Then, there is the First Robotics Competition in Duluth, MN for the second year. Finally, they will be setting off rockets in the spring. Some of the returning six have said that they are most excited to be building rockets and getting to fly them at the end of the school year. Everyone gets to build and design their own rocket. Some of them want to go small and simple while others wanted to go big and fancy. Last year the robotics team had a great time at the regional competition in Duluth. They ended up with a record of five wins, three losses, and one tie. Overall, they ended up placing 23rd out of 63 teams, and finish in second place for the rookie teams, which is something to be proud of for their first competition. With all this going on the Robotics group will also be holding fundraisers. The money will be used for their Duluth trip so the expense is not as high. The dates have not been decided yet for the upcoming fundraisers. The class has many ideas on what they want to do to help raise money. The fundraising committee consists of four seniors, Elise Hanson, Andrina Sillerud, Makayla Webster, and, Lilly Hunter. These girls are planning four outstanding fundraisers this year. Mr. Blanchard said that he is really looking forward to the regional competition in Duluth. “Getting to go back now that we have experience is really exciting. We now know what goes on during the competition and how we stack up against other teams. We can use this knowledge to strategize this year. I feel that our chances to place among the top five is realistic and look forward to seeing how we do.” Mr. Blanchard’s goal for his Robotics class, is to make it to the final rounds of the Robotics competition in Duluth MN.
