WelcomeThere are now two Rochester cycles of prayer – ‘parishes’ and ‘extra-parochial’. This is an attempt to be a little more even handed with the additional groups who are prayed for as the year turns, and to include our church schools in our prayers.As usual, it’s a sizable document but designed to be quick and clear to read, and also to leave space for your own notes. Of course, you do not have to print it all out at once, and you’re welcome to reformat it, if you wish (a Word version is available from my blog, see website below).Sunday entries are designed to look at some of the bigger pictures in our Diocese – sometimes geographical (deaneries, archdeaconries, link dioceses) sometimes issues or activities (Vocations Sunday). If there is an aspect of diocesan life that you’d like included on a Sunday, do let me know. These are followed through the week by daily prayers from all over the diocese, and across the Anglican Communion, including the calendar of saints and other worthy people. Finally, there is space in the daily entries for you to note any prayer requests that have been made to you or your parish, or any special interests you want to remember in your prayers.Please contact me with any comments or suggestions – [email protected] or 01634 814439. Schools Festival

June 13-16 – Church Schools CelebrationThe education teams of the Diocese and Rochester Cathedral will work together with the aim of creating 4 days which the year 6 children in our church schools will remember for a long time to come. We aim to provide a memorable time of worship which will help children as they prepare to move on to a new secondary school and a space in which they be thankful for how well their Church of England primary school has equipped them for their life’s journey. In the morning, the pupils take part in a range of activities which feed into the afternoon worship which is a Eucharist led by Bishop James or Bishop Rod. Please pray• For pupils and their helpers - that they will feel that God has blessed them during their time at the Cathedral• For all those who contribute to the days – that God will bless their gifts in his service

Orpington deanery

We welcome new members as Orpington Deanery has grown recently with the transfer of the parishes of Biggin Hill and Keston from Bromley Deanery. Elections for the new Triennium have brought new representatives to the Synod too – and we look forward to working together over the next three years.As a Deanery we shared in the ‘Our Conversation, Our Future’ programme and we await the analysis following the consultation process. A Deanery Quiet day in a quiet garden was held in May, and in June our next Synod is planned as an open meeting to consider the plight of Christians in difficult parts of the world facing slavery, trafficking and persecution.In October we are excited by Bishop James Visit to the Deanery and are working on a varied programme which will enable him to share in the life and work of the wider community as well as spending time with churches and clergy.Finally, we wish Rev Carol Morrison well as she leaves Keston, and Rev Brian McHenry as he retires from All Saints, Orpington – with grateful thanks for their ministry and support. We pray for those charged with making new appointments to these parishes.

Paddock Wood deanery

In the last year this deanery has gone through a number of changes with new clergy successfully taking up parish appointments and Diocesan. The parish of Horsmonden has been in an interregnum for a year and maybe by the time you pray for us this might be filled. Three parishes are also exploring ‘clustering’ with a view to the future. Schools work plays a prominent part in the ministry of parishes in this Deanery and St Andrew’s Paddock Wood has co-sponsored with the Tenax Trust, a new primary school for a September 2020 opening. We give thanks as a Deanery for our curates, lay leaders and congregations who bring so much energy and vibrancy to ministry. We also give thanks for the chaplaincy work supported in this Deanery, namely The Hospice in the Weald and Kenward, and for the chaplains and staff.

Tonbridge Archdeaconry

We give thanks for a number of new appointments to fill vacancies in the Archdeaconry, with new parish clergy in post in Christ Church, Tunbridge Wells (March), Shipbourne and Plaxtol; Platt; Borough Green (May) and with further clergy to take up posts in July (Knockholt with Halstead) and September (Langton Green; Seal Chart and Underriver). Please pray for parishes entering vacancies (St Luke’s, Sevenoaks; Chiddingstone with Chiddingstone Causeway) and others with a vacancy (Larkfield and the Southborough Team).

We pray for Clive and Jane Mansell as retirement comes in July and for Clive’s successor in due course and for those covering the Archdeacon vacancy over the summer.

Please remember the 44 Church schools and other schools in the Archdeaconry as the summer term progresses, exams are taken and some students and pupils prepare for the next stage of their lives and education.

Rochester deanery

Rochester Deanery looks forward to welcoming two new ministers over the summer to serve at All Saints, Chatham, and in Chatham Town Centre. We give thanks that the Conversation Café has got off to a very successful start and requires more volunteers to meet demand. We pray that ecumenical working may flourish and increase across the deanery Please continue to pray that amidst the complexity of the emerging plans for mission and ministry in Chatham we may discern God’s direction, wait on the guidance of his Spirit and know his grace.

Elsewhere in the Deanery we give thanks for the ministry of our Area Dean Revd Penny Foreman who retired at the end of April, and pray for wisdom and vision for the new Area Dean.

Chatham Town Centre

We give thanks for Rev Carol Morgan, recently licensed as the new incumbent of St John’s Chatham. We pray for her as she develops the congregation made up of the existing congregation from Emmaus and some members from St Philip & St James Walderslade. Please also pray for the refurbishment of St John’s Church over the next few months and the appointment of a Church Army Officer to begin a Centre of Mission for Medway starting in Chatham. Please pray for all of those involved in this exciting venture and thank God for the work already going on in the Conversation Cafe and the response to the service leaflets that were developed by students from Mid Kent College.

Kondoa

This fledgling Diocese, one of the four linked with our own Diocese, is blessed with clergy who have powerful faith and love for each other and for us. All who come into contact with them will say that that we receive from them more than we could possibly give, it is truly a privilege to know them and to work with them.The Diocese is very poor (even for Tanzania) and so nearly all the parishes are unable to pay a parish share to the Diocese, this leaves the Diocese with negligible internal funding. Staff are either unpaid or paid by others and there is little infrastructure. Theological training is a priority for clergy who are working in an evangelical Diocese in a largely Muslim area. This will also allow the Bishop to start to build a staff structure that will sustain the Diocese into the future. On top of the everyday poverty, there was a drought last year and again this year, but even worse. Please pray for the education of the clergy; for long term food security for all; for those who have been impacted by the drought; for all the plans and projects underway to build the church; the sustainability of the Diocese and for the Bishop’s sabbatical. Hearts of generosity are needed as the Diocese is so poor and yet has so much work to do. Please also thank God for the many blessings and encouragements that this relationship brings and for the way in which the many parish and school links are developing. Please pray for all those who are visiting Kondoa this year and also for those who will be hosting us.

Sevenoaks deanery

Prayers are asked for: Our two new incumbents being licensed over the summer, and

our upcoming Interregnum at St Luke’s, and those responsible for the application and selection process. We pray for Canon Mark Griffin and his wife Clare as they begin a new life and ministry in the Canterbury Diocese.

Our continued ecumenical involvement in Churches Together in the Sevenoaks District and the North West Fellowship of Churches.

Deanery Synods - discussing especially finance, deployment and Our Conversation, Our Future Our Licensed Lay and Pastoral Ministry, especially those being licensed this summer.

Our Church officers, leaders, helpers; all continually under pressure for availability and resources. All the various Summer events including; Alpha Courses, Pre-Alpha Courses; Marriage, Baptisms, and Confirmations. Our churches’ emerging and changing roles among the communities we serve.

The ever-increasing pressure on schools admissions in the area, especially church schools. Our reaching out as new housing developments bring new communities and new challenges. Our food banks and similar initiatives, and those who feel they have become invisible in today’s society.
