World Autism Awareness Day 2016By Pat Morgan

We all know of a friend, rel-ative or neighbor who has achild on the autism spectrum.

When you look at the num-

bers, the statistics on autism arealarming. In March of 2014, theCenters for Disease Control andPrevention (CDC) released a re-port on the prevalence of autismin the United States.Tis surveil-lance study identied one in 68children (one in 42 boys and onein 189 girls) as having autismspectrum disorder (or ASD).

During the summer, we maysee a child sitting on the beachstaring at the ocean, not partic-ipating in the fun beach activ-ities with the others. We don’tfully understand what theproblem is with him or her. Weare afraid to ask their parent. Our hearts go out to them, but

we don’t know what to do. Butthere is something you can do.Te eighth annual World Au-

tism Awareness Day is Satur-day, April 2, 2016. Every year,

autism organizations aroundthe world celebrate the day

with unique fundraising andawareness-raising events. Cit-ies around the world will “LightIt Up Blue” in various ways thatday, in honor of World Autism

Awareness Day. You too canshow your support by wearingblue on April 2.

Another way of showing yoursupport locally is by attend-ing the 3rd annual “Light It Up

With the Blues” – A Benet for Autism Speaks. It will be heldon Sunday April 3 at Yer Man’sPub located at 70-26 88th Streetin Glendale Queens. Te eventruns from 1 PM to 7:30 PM. Ad-mission is free, but you are en-couraged to participate in themany raffl es and a 50/50.

I participated in last year’sbenet along with my Solshynebandmates. I was impressed onhow well organized it was. Weplayed a set of music to an ex-tremely enthusiastic and mo-

tivated crowd. Tis year’s livemusic lineup features Rocka-

way’s own 3 Sheets to the Wind,as well as Company G and Gen-erations.

I spoke to Brian Walter, whofounded this event, along witha dedicated team of friends andrelatives. Brian’s oldest son,James, has a non-verbal form ofautism. For a number of years,he was involved with other au-tism fundraising activities, butcame up with the wonderfulidea of “Light It Up With theBlues” because he wanted peo-ple to get something in returnfor their support. With non-stoplive music and with prizes do-nated from more than 20 restau-rants and other businesses be-ing raffl ed, everyone is a winner.

To Brian, awareness is just asimportant as the money raised

for research. At the event, there will be lots of educational ma-terial and posters on hand foranyone wanting to learn moreabout Autism.

Last year’s event drew up to

200 people and raised $4,000, which went directly to AutismSpeaks. Based on the initialresponse, Brian expects thatthey will surpass last year’ssuccess.

Brian also alerted me to thefact that there will be a New

York City “Autism Speaks” Walkon Saturday, September 10on Randall’s Island. Tis willbe the rst “city-wide” walk,

which means it includes par-ticipants from all  ve boroughs(as opposed to individual bor-oughs or neighborhoods hav-ing their own Walks).

If you are unable to attend thebenet on April 3, but wouldstill like to support this worthycause, you can donate online atthe following website: http://

    Remembering Elaine FreeburgBy Katie McFadden

There’s a Rockaway angel danc-ing up in Heaven. Elaine Freeburg, owner of Mrs. Elaine’s School ofDance, died on Friday, March 25

after a battle with breast cancer. Themother, wife, and inspiring danceteacher to many, was 38.

Freeburg lived her dream. Shehad been dancing since she was5-years-old and knew it was whatshe wanted to do with her life. Shebecame certified as a dance teach-er early on and was teaching by 18

years old. Elaine taught at sever-al dance studios and previouslytaught for Connelly Dance Centerbefore opening her own studioin 2009. Throughout her years ofteaching, Elaine taught hundredsof students ballet, tap, jazz, moderndance, hip-hop and more.

In September 2015, Elaine wasdiagnosed with Stage IV breast can-cer. Elaine put up a strong fight andremained in good spirits through-out and she appreciated the sup-port from the community. “She

was so grateful. She had support

from family, friends, her dancers, and groups like the Graybeards andRockaway WISH during her battle. She remained upbeat and contin-ued to teach after her diagnosis. Herfavorite place was her dance studio,”

Stacey Bennett, Elaine’s best friendand director of the studio, said.

Besides her love of dance, sheloved her family dearly. Bennettsaid Elaine met her husband, John,

when they were 16 years old. “They were a love for the ages,” Bennettsaid. They married in October 2005and had two daughters. Three-year-old Ella is the “spitting image ofElaine,” Bennett said. In July, Elainegave birth to their second daughter,Jesse, just two months before she

was diagnosed. Despite her con-dition, Elaine stayed strong for herfamily, throughout. “On Tuesday,Elaine learned that her disease hadadvanced to the point that it wastime to get her affairs in order. Sheknew she had little time left. How-ever, rather than sinking into a deepmorass, that evening she insistedthat we sing Happy Birthday toJohn and eat the cake that Ella had

helped prepare for his birthday,”Bennett said. Elaine passed awayon Good Friday, surrounded by herloved ones.

Freeburg touched the lives of hun-dreds. Several of her students wound

up teaching for her as they got older, like Stephanie Shapiro. “Elaine wasamazing. She could always make

you laugh. She was the most caringand kind person. She would neverturn anyone away from the studio. She would work out a deal withthose who couldn’t afford it and it

was the most amazing thing,” Shap-iro said. Helen Timlin-Kilgallen, ofOcean Bliss Yoga, credits Elaine withmaking her business possible. Elaineallowed Kilgallen to share her studiospace when she wasn’t using it. “Mydear sweet beautiful Elaine, you areforever etched in all our hearts andsouls.  I loved you like my sister. AsJohn says, ‘You are the best!’ You arefree from suffering. I know you aredancing with all the angels,” Kilgal-len said.

Bennett says Elaine’s passing hasbeen devastating for her students, but they’ll carry on for their teacher.

“Without Elaine, it’s never going tobe the same because she broughtthat spark, but it was her last wish-es that the studio remains openand we’ll move forward and go tocompetitions with our team andhave a phenomenal recital in June

We have every intention of fulfillingthose wishes. She won’t be herebut she’ll be with us in spirit andshe’ll always be in our hearts.”

It’s hard to believe but thehome telephone is going the wayof the transistor radio and the petrock. Nobody uses it anymore.

Your kids call you on your cell. And when they’re home they wouldn’t think of answering thephone when it’s ringing. Teycould be standing right next toit and they won’t even glance atthe thing. Tey know it’s not forthem, so why bother.

And you can’t really blamethem. Chances are, the call isfrom a telephone solicitor, scamartist, robot or from no one atall. Sometimes you pick up thephone just to stop the ringingand when you say hello there’snobody there. I think there are800 numbers that just call yourhouse to see if you’ll pick up thephone and then if you do they’llsell your number to another

company. We found one. Sellinga sucker’s number right here, ahuman being still picking up thephone!

Man, times have changed. When the home phone rst went

out of fashion it signaled the endof era, when battle royals regularlyerupted with the sound of the ring.

Sheesh, in the old days, be-fore caller ID, siblings wouldlunge for a ringing phone. Tere

was a chance that a boyfriend orgirlfriend was calling and, Godforbid, if a sibling picked up thephone. Te horror!

An older sibling might start aconversation or give the callerthe third degree.

A wrestling match might breakout or there’d be death threats ut-tered in a strained whisper: giveme that phone or I’ll kill you.

A lot of homes only had onephone and no extension as a sec-ond phone was called. You werelucky if the phone had a long cordso you could stretch it and ndsome privacy in a nearby bath-room or a stairwell. And those

were the days when there was nocall waiting. Somebody wouldtie up the line for hours and you

just knew your friends were try-ing to call but they’d be gettingthat incessant busy signal.

If we siblings weren’t ghtingover the phone we’d be ghtingover something else and if mymother were talking on the phoneshe’d be glaring at us, threateningus with her eyeballs. She’d nevertell someone on the other end ofthe line to hold on. She’d glareand then sometimes make a stand sometimes mouth “When Iget off  this phone….”Tose were the days of the ro-

tary dial. You’d have to dial a “9”and then have to wait for the dialto swing all the way back beforedialing the next number. Some-times you’d try to speed it up bydragging the dial with your n-ger. Tat might save you a tenthof a second.

And those were the days oftelephone exchanges, whichseem like a lost language to

     young people. Tey can’t even

quite grasp how a rotary phone worked never mind trying tograsp the idea of Nightingale 5,Granite, 4 Neptune 4 or Cloverd-ale 8.Te only reason to hang on

to your landline is because cellphone reception can still be asbad as the old walkie-talkies. Butreception is getting better. Wedon’t even need landlines for

when the power goes out. Mostof those old copper lines havebeen replaced by ber optic net-

works. When power goes out, chances are your landline is gon-na be out, too.

As Miles Appelman says, “Onlygeezers use telephones.” Andeven the geezers, myself includ-ed, are starting to get sick of theold phone and the bill that comes

with it. Still, it’s kinda weird. Watching a thing die out. But when’s the last time good newscame on a landline?

Yep, it might be time to hangup. Tough come to think of it –it won’t make much sense to sayhang up any longer.

Rockaway Wellness Expo Coming April 17By Katie McFadden

Rockaway has become ahealth hub in recent years. There are so many plac-es available to assist with

self-improvement, that manymay not be familiar with allof them. Rockaway’s first

Wellness Expo is hoping tobring several health and well-ness-focused businesses, in-dividuals and experts togeth-er at West End Temple (147-02Newport Ave) on Sunday,

April 17.During the event from 9:30

a.m. to 5 p.m., local exhibi-tors will show what productsand services they offer to thecommunity, and several ex-perts will speak about healthtopics at what is being calleda Festival of Body, Mind andSpirit. “The focus is about thiscommunity, who practiceshere, who sells their productshere and who has facilitieshere, so that we can all haveawareness of what’s available

in our neighborhood,” key-note speaker, Dr. Nancy Gahl-es said.

The idea for a Wellness Expocomes from Dr. Gahles, a Cer-tified Classical Homeopath.“As a holistic doctor, I’ve been

working with post-traumaticstress and illnesses here, re-ally since 9/11. I took a tableat West End Temple’s Shop‘Til You Drop event in Decem-ber and afterward, I thoughtthat we don’t only need craftfairs here. Let’s have some-thing that brings awarenessof the health practitionersand services here. We have asmall community of wellnessproviders that is building. Iapproached Lori Musume-ci from the Temple and theyagreed to host this event andthey’ve been very supportive,”Dr. Gahles said.

Ever since the Temple fin-ished its renovated gymspace, they have opened upmore to the community by al-lowing groups to hold eventsthere and even opening the

gym as a community volley-ball center. “We have the vol-leyball league and other pro-grams and in keeping withthe fitness theme, we figuredthe Wellness Expo would bea good way to show the com-

munity the wealth of wellnessexperts and entrepreneursthat we have on the penin-sula,” Musumeci said. Soonother like-minded individualsstarted getting on board, likeMiriam Kwietniewska of ThePaleo Factory, which makes ahealthy mousse dessert. Forseveral weeks, Dr. Gahles,Musumeci, Kwietniewska, Mi-chelle Lieberman and RobinZweifler have been planningthe Rockaway Wellness Expo.“We love that everyone is go-ing to be in one place for thefirst time, including experts, entrepreneurs and enthusi-asts. We thought it would bea great time to start the Rock-away Association of Well-ness Experts and Enthusiasts, called RAWE,” Musumeci said.

    Starting at 11 a.m., experts

will give 45-minute lectureson various topics in the Tem-ple’s Sanctuary. Among someof the presenters are Wom-en Image Expert Andrea Git-ter, Kristine Memoli who willspeak about Reiki healing,

Keynote speaker, Dr. Gahles, who will speak about home-opathy as a whole system ofmedicine for the whole fami-ly, Bridget Carson of All Sea-sons Fitness, who will speakabout a program called MELTfor pain relief, and more.

In the Temple’s gym, theRockaway Wellness Expo willbring together several busi-nesses that offer fitness in-struction such as the gym,Burn Fitness, Hot Yoga Rock-away, surf school, Skudin Surfand All Seasons Fitness. Somebusinesses and individuals

will showcase their products, such as the Paleo Factory withtheir MUD dessert, End of the

Ramones Remembered I’ll Always Have Rockaway Beach

    By Christine Shaffer

The Ramones, the 1970s bandfrom Forest Hills, Queens are nowrespectable, which was never their

intent. “We’re punks first, always,”they once told a journalist, but on

April 10, the Queens Museum inFlushing Meadows Corona Parkis paying them homage, whetherthey would have liked it or not.

The museum will present “Hey!Ho! Let’s Go: Ramones and theBirth of Punk,” a retrospective ofthe band’s archives featuring threehundred and fty objects fromearly press packages, their guitars, their ever-present leather jack-ets and T- shirts displaying theiriconic eagle logo. Te show willdemonstrate how the Ramonesinuenced punk era bands suchasTe Clash and the Sex Pistols,

while they continue to inspire art-ists of today like Shepard Fairey.

This year marks the fortieth an-niversary of their self-titled debutalbum, opens with, “BlitzkriegBop,” a workhorse of a song; hav-

ing narrated Taco Bell, Diet Pepsiand AT&T commercials throughthe years and just last month, wasused in a GoPro commercial dur-ing the Super Bowl.

On their next album, “Rocket toRussia,” lived my love, in the shapeof a song called “Rockaway Beach.”This shoreline exists as a peninsulain southern Queens, underliningthe borough, a seven-mile strip ofsand that faces the Atlantic Ocean.

In the heyday of the Ramones in1970s Queens, Rockaway Beach be-longed to us -- the teenagers -- noparents, no adults. Taking two hoursto get there, my friends and I wouldpile onto the city bus, the Q18, to

Woodside, transfer to the Q53, which dropped us at Beach 116thstreet, costing us seventy-five cents.Te Ramones knew what we

lived and where, proving it intheir song…“It’s not far to reach/

we can hitch a ride to RockawayBeach/down on the playgroundthe hot concrete/bus ride is tooslow/the sun is out and I wantsome.”

e descended from those buseslike armies, carrying beer-ladencoolers and large boom box radios.Boys with their long feathered hair,

white puka shell necklaces, cut off

jean shorts, white fringe hangingdown on their thighs while thintowels hung from their back pock-ets. We, the girls, wore the mostdaring macramé bikinis, slatheredon baby oil, hoping to look moredesirable to our male counterpartsas we watched them play Frisbee.

I was fifteen years old the firsttime I went to Rockaway with myfriend, Lisa in 1976. Our mothershad allowed us to go as long wecalled them upon arriving.

I called my mother from a payphone but she sounded so far awaythat I had to shout, “yes, I arrivedsafely,” over and over. I disconnect-ed us by pushing on the phone’scradle because I couldn’t hear her. Ihoped she had understood me, butbizarrely, I wasn’t worried.

As I was about to hang up thephone, I saw that someone hadstretched a large piece of chewed

gum onto the earpiece, coveringall the holes. No wonder I hadn’theard my mother. I showed thephone to Lisa and we laughed.

    That should have been embar-

rassing, how could I have not seenthe gum as I had put the phone to myear, but instead I felt light, airy, un-caring. That’s what Rockaway Beachdid, made me feel unbothered, free.

That seven-mile strip of sand was my respite, remaining so, as Icontinued to go there with differ-ent friends, in different mindsets, through the years.

Now in my suburban town, fiftymiles away with my own teenagechild, I’m not that far from Rock-away Beach, but far enough that Ifeel far-flung, so that Ramones an-them remains my touchstone …“It’s not far too reach/We can hitcha ride to Rockaway Beach/the sunis out and I want some.”

Thank you, Tommy, DeeDee,Johnny, Joey for that and although

you are no longer physically withus, I’ll see you all at the Queens Mu-seum on April 10. Hey! Ho! Let’s Go!

    Te Lazer SpeaksFAITH

    By Lou Pastina

Faith comes in many shapes, sizes and colors. Some say

you must walk by faith, notby sight; others say you don’tknow you have it until it is theonly thing that you have left.Faith can be a tricky thingthese days with so much atour fingertips through theInternet and advances in sci-ence.

The type of faith you see inthe movies is not the type ofthing that happens in real life. But when God tells Moses inthe Ten Commandments tolead his people, Moses doesit. He doesn’t hesitate, al-though its good if you are builtlike Charlton Heston and hadbeen an Egyptian general pri-or to leading a slave revolt. Itmust have taken an unbeliev-able faith to realize that yourformer slave driver was nowgoing to be your deliv erer.

This past weekend was the100-year anniversary of theEaster Uprising in Dublinthat many credit with putting

Ireland on a path to sharedpower in its own country. The faith of those that occu-pied the General Post Officeon O’Connell Street, in the

world, to real ize that its at-tempt to win freedom washopeless, yet inspiring, was asthe Irish say, brilliant.

There are Christians inMuslim countries that have

worshiped in peace for centu-ries but who find themselvesin the path of a holy war, yetcontinue to worship becausethey believe. Faith is strong, but it does not cause one tokill in the name of God. That’snot faith, that’s murder. Manytimes in the past people havechanged their outer religionsto continue to survive, buthave kept their inner faithstrong. That is strength.

Recently I had the oppor-tunity to attend a few funeralmasses. Not my favorite thingto do, but I was inspired by

the shepherds who led theproceedings. They did notpreach down from pulpits, but waded out into the con-gregations and spoke plainlyand directly, and inspiringly. Those moments give me faiththat religion is not dead, thatGod is not dead, despite what

we read and see happening al lover the world.

Faith does not have to bethe big splashy movie thing,it can be the simple gesturedone with love. For faith is

what set s us apart from therest of the animal kingdom.

We bel ieve in goodness, webelieve in God, we believe inone another. As Tug McGrawonce said, you gotta believe, and I believe we do. And I havefaith that you do too. ShalomRockaway. Continued on Page 44

GET RID OF THE NO U-TURNDear Editor:

The 3-17 issue of The RockawayTimes had a story entitled “It’s Back!NO U-TURN Sign Returns.”

I have to agree with the RockawayTimes. “WHY” was this signreinstalled? After reading this storyI contacted the NYPD for accidentstatistics at this location on Beach113th Street and Beach Channel

Drive. In my opinion althoughaccidents have occurred here themajority of them have nothing to do

with not having a “NO U-TURN”sign. In 2015 there were ten accidentsat this location and only two of theten accidents were due to making aU-TURN. In 2016 there have beenfive accidents and NONE were due to

     vehicles making a U-TURN.

As for vehicle occupant injuries, outof all fifteen accidents there was oneinjury and not due to a vehicle makinga U-TURN. I also agree with the reasons

which were in last week’s story and willstrongly say, the consequences can be

worse by leaving this sign intact. I willbe requesting that the Department ofTransportation (D.OT.) remove thissign.

    ROAMING MENTALLY ILLDear Editor,

While there are many great aspectsto living in Rockaway Beach, onenegative aspect seems to be gettingMUCH worse. As a lifelong resident,I have come to expect some levelof homeless and mentally ill orunstable people around town.

What I have noticed as a very

disturbing trend is how much worse the level of homeless andunstable individuals has become.Beach 116th Street, Stop and Shop, and now Beach 129th Street arebecoming inundated with moreand more homeless people ormentally ill. There has to be a morehealthy place for these people tobe than standing around harassing

residents and children for money. Another troubling trend is the

amount of residents from the BelleHarbor Manor wandering aroundthe streets. Tese residents alsoappear mentally ill, and it’s strangethat the staff   allow them to walkoff  of the property unsupervised.

With the summer months comingand more visitors filling our streetsand businesses, I am calling on theNYPD, elected officials such as PhilGoldfeder and Eric Ulrich to stopthis degradation of the quality of life.Rockaway is too beautiful a placeto have ruined. Parents shouldn’tbe afraid to let their children go toschoolyards or the pizza shops. Mostcurrently are, and this needs to beaddressed. The mere prescience ofpolice cars in front of the train stationdoes nothing to help the problem on116. Where is the outreach from thecity to get these people off our streets

and into facilities where they can gethelp / treatment? HELP!Henry Teach

    STRANGE, ISN’T IT?Dear Editor,

What is this, the mutualadmiration society or just old-fashioned quid pro quo?

    Several weeks ago the Mayor

agreed to pay raises for the CityCouncil that even exceeded theincrease recommended by the City’sindependent consultant. Then this

week we hear that the Council votedoverwhelmingly to even beyond theprogressive affordable housing planproposed by the mayor, in spiteof the serious concerns voice bymany community boards aroundthe City. Tese events remind usall that living in NYC means 1.)Tere is no local control and 2.) thegovernment controls everything.

    UNFAIR TO TICKET WRITERSDear Editor:

(Regarding tickets being given outon empty beaches to dog owners-Letters 3/17/24).

Let me first say, I’m sorry for thepassing of Ms. Atwood’s father andsorry for her ticket. I just don’t think

you should have put the officers’names in the paper as if you weretrying to shame them for doing their

job. You were in the wrong and yougot caught. If you feel you have anissue with your block’s particularsignage, address it with your evidence

when you fight your ticket or addressthe Parks Department.

OnTe Road With Rover And RosaFIRST STOP HONG KONG

    By Wild Rover

Irish Rosa and I got on aplane in NY on Tuesday night

and woke up in Hong Kong onTursday morning. I can onlyconclude that over the Pacic

we ran into some kind of worm-hole and traveled into the fu-ture. (Nets fans, good news: wesign Durant in free agency. Actsurprised when it happens un-less it’s in front of Knicks fans, then act like a jackass).Te accompanying picture is

the view from our room over-looking the harbor. It makesthe decision to fly coach for15 hours so we could treatourselves at the Ritz nightone seem like a very good de-cision. It’s a little easier forme to say that because I sleptabout nine hours on the plane

whereas poor Irish Rosa sleptabout nine minutes, but Ithink upon arriving she wouldagree that it was worth it. Our

room is on the 110th floor! Youread that right. There is a tel-escope in the exec lounge onthe 116th floor and you know

you are high up when the tel-escope is to look down on the

world.Looking down, indeed.I say, innocently, “Te people

look like ants from up here.”Irish Rosa (evil laugh): “Tey

ARE ants!” Wild Rover: “Whoa, easy

honey.” We are in the Hong Kong

equivalent of Jersey City - Kow-loon - so we have sweeping

views up the whole harborover to Hong Kong Island. Teharbor is pretty amazing and

we can’t wait to take a harborcruise to see it from the wa-ter. I think NYC can hang interms of pound for pound best

views nancial center vs. -nancial center, but Hong Konghas two to three sections thatequal NYC’s nancial district,

so it denitely eclipses NYCin overall scale. It is also as ifRio merged with NYC becauselike Rio, Hong Kong Island hasgreen mountains right behindits skyline to frame it making itthat much more spectacular.

I believe the plan is to hike tothe top of its most famous, Vic-toria Peak, on Saturday so we

will be able to see it from theother side as well.

We are just lounging todayand getting over jet lag, so weare soaking in our one night atthe Ritz. As you might expect,

rooms on the 110th oor in themost (or second most withSingapore at its heels) expen-sive city in the world don’t

come cheap, so we are onlyhere for a night before “down-grading” to the Mandarin Ori-ental in the city center, whichis like going from 21-year-oldscotch to 18-year-old scotch. Then, we will downgrade fur-ther into the moonshine rangeso we don’t bankrupt our-selves three days into the trip.Luckily the Ritz hooked us upand let us check in at 7 am

without issue, so it’s like get-ting 2 nights for one. Tonight

we are going to a 2-MichelinStar Cantonese restaurant onthe 103rd floor of the hotel.

We’ve never eaten at a Miche-lin Star restaurant before anddefinitely never eaten on the103rd oor, so we are prettypsyched for that.

More to follow as the journeycontinues...

    Seriously, choosing a

    health plan is not easy.

We work hard to make it easier.

A veteran of the Korean War, hisChristian name was James DiTul-lio, but to his friends and extend-ed family at the Broad Channel

VFW he was known simply as“Grumpy”. I rst met Grumpy

years ago on a Sunday afternoonat the Broad Channel VFW wherehe served as that organization’sbar chairman. Seated in the can-teen, wearing a pair of readingglasses with one lens conspicu-

ously missing and a baseball cap with “GRUMPY” emblazonedin large capital letters above thebill, he greeted me with a rmhand shake and a warm welcometo his kingdom. He asked me

what branch of the service I had

served with and when I told himthat I had completed two enlist-ments in the United Sates MarineCorps, he quickly replied, “Twoenlistments with the green ma-chine huh? You graduated from

just plain dumb to complete idiotdidn’t you? I guess there is a goodreason USMC stands for UncleSam’s Misguided Children.” Rightthen and there I knew I would likethis guy.

One warm summer weekendas Vicky Amendolera, who tend-ed bar at the VFW on Sundays, kept our glasses topped with icecold draft beer I asked Grumpyhow he came to acquire his cur-mudgeonly nickname. “I have noidea! People have always told methat I’m grumpy but, for Christ’ssake, it’s not like I have spent mylife walking around poking chil-dren in the eye. Well, not very

small ones, anyway.” Before Icould say anything, Vicky startedlaughing and said “Don’t believea word that this ill-tempered oldgoat tells you! One look at hisglasses and it should be real clear

who gets poked in the eye!”

I visited Grumpy at St. John’sEpiscopal Hospital in Far Rock-away some years back where he

was, as he put it, in for his annu-al tune up! During the course ofmy visit our conversation turnedtowards Grumpy’s service in Ko-rea as a young soldier back in theearly 50’s. I asked him why thatconict was often referred to asthe Forgotten War. He sat up inhis bed and removed his readingglasses and began cleaning itsone intact lens with a tissue andsaid, “Korea happened so soonafter WWII but did not involve asmany troops or combat deaths. In WWII the entire country gotbehind the war eff ort and sup-ported the GI’s but the early 50’ssaw most Americans at homeenjoying the domestic benets ofthe post WWII boom. It was likethe wars in Iraq and Afghanistan

today. Unless you have someone you are related to or personallyknow serving, most people didn’tpay too much attention. It is real-ly a shame. Keep in mind thoughthat for those of us who served inKorea, that war is anything but

forgotten.” As they will sound for all of us,

back on March 13, 2014,nal taps were sounded for Grumpy as his82 year tour of duty on this earthcame to an honorable close. AsI end this column I realize justhow much I miss those Sundays

when Grumpy and I would sitsipping our beers talking abouteverything and nothing as Vickykept a close eye on both of usmaking sure I was sent packingas soon as I became bilingual andstarted talking to my sneakers. Itruly enjoyed both the companyand friendship of this gentlemanand I appreciate all of you takinga few minutes of your time to re-member Grumpy along with me.He may be gone but he is surelynot forgotten.

Broad Channel, why would an- yone want to live anywhere else?

    That MedicineCabinet

Recently a reader inquiredabout what the average homemedicine closet should con-tain, how to dispose of oldmedicines and how to keepmeds from kids and teens.

The average medicinecloset should contain in ad-dition to toiletries and cos-metics a basic first aid kit.Band-Aids of different sizesand types, butterfly dress-ings, a roll of paper dressingtape, sterile and non-sterile4x4 gauze pads, an ace band-age or two and an arm slingfor starters. You might wantto add a thermometer, bot-tle of 325mg aspirin, alcoholpads, non-sterile gloves, abottle of alcohol and a bot-tle of hydrogen peroxide

plus wound care cream likeBacitracin or Aquaphor. Addto that glycerin supposito-ries and Preparation H. Ifthere are small children inthe house a bottle of ipecac(induces vomiting in casesof accidental ingestion ofsome substances). The backof the closet door shouldhave the number of doc-tors who treat family mem-bers plus the police, fire and

poison control numbers. If you choose to keep Tyle-nol keep it in a safe place asan overdose of Tylenol canbe fatal. Prescription medsshould also be kept in thatsafe place, preferably hid-den and/or locked in house-holds with kids or teens. Ad-ditional items may be keptin the closet depending onany illness or disease thata household member mayhave. Your doctor can help

you with that. Go throughthe closet every now andthen to replace expired itemsand replace bandages whichmay fade and lose grippingstrength over time.

As far as disposing of un-used or expired meds there

is no recommended methodas far as I know. Flush themdown the toilet and they

wind up in our waters or putthem in a zip-loc bag in thetrash and they wind up in alandfill. My choice would belandfill.

I hope that answers thequestion. Please direct questions andcomments to [email protected]

    In Touch With TechFinding Meme-Oh

    By Pat Morgan

What is a “meme”? What’s theright way to pronounce it? You’ve

probably seen hundreds of them, not knowing what they are called.

According to the Merriam Webster Dictionary it is “anidea, behavior, or style thatspreads from person to per-son within a culture.” It is pro-nounced “meem” and not“mehm.” Te word was origi-nally coined prior to the exist-ence of the Internet by Britishevolutionary biologist RichardDawkins in 1976.

Wikipedia states that a memeacts as a unit for carrying cultur-al ideas, symbols, or practicesthat can be transmitted from onemind to another through writing, speech, gestures, rituals, or oth-er imitable phenomena with amimicked theme.

At this point, you are probablythanking me for the High SchoolEnglish exercise, but would you

know a meme if you tripped overone? You want an example.

SourceFed has a quick videoon YouTube about memes. Tey

describe it as a funny picture with words on it or a silly internet vid-eo that you can share with yourfriends.Tey suggested that “Kil-roy Was Here” is a meme. It wasa joke that kept up soldiers’ mo-rale during World War II and itsorigin is not really known. Streetartists plastered posters on polesor construction sites during the1980’s and 1990’s, which are con-sidered memes. With the prolif-eration of the Internet there wasan explosion of new memes viaemail, websites and social media.

One of the most popular stylesof memes is taking a photo andadding a funny caption to it. Theaccompanying image is a good ex-ample. (I chose one with a “G” rat-ing that is not political.) If you are onFacebook, you see these all the time, and have probably shared a few.

So, how do you create a meme?

Well, there are websites that al-low you to do that. Here are a fewsuggestions, based on a Googlesearch: https://makeameme.

    org/, https://imgip.com/me-megenerator, http://imgur.com/memegen. Google Play and the

Apple Store have a lot of appsavailable (both free and paid)that you can create memes on.

The website Reddit.com (anentertainment, social news net-

working service, and news web-site where registered communitymembers can submit content) al-lows you to upload the funniest of

all memes. They can be either ex-isting memes or ones that you havecreated. You can also post themon Facebook, or just email themto your friends if you don’t want the

whole world to know. So, in the words of Aerosmith,

    “Meme On!”

    A classic meme
