Hello tto everyone ,
We have a new volunteer working at the Community Centre on Wednesdays and Thursdays, you may have seen Ben
around the centre when you have been here. Ben has been granted a Restricted Driver’s Authorisation and will be the
main driver for the Rollingstone Bus from now on. This does not mean that our other drivers are off the hook. Their excellent services
will still be required and will continue to maintain their Restricted Driver Authorisation accreditation. I have to thank our drivers for
being available and ready to drive the bus sometimes at the drop of a hat. Thank you.
Janine the Rolly Rag editor and myself will, by the time you read this, have been to an information workshop to learn the finer skills of
working in the Facebook and with other media environments. I must admit that this really is not my area of expertise and need as much
help as possible.
Who Dunnit? – Not telling - you had to be there on the night. Thank you to everyone who got into the spirit of the 30’s by dressing up
and having a wonderful evening of excellent food, good wine, a night of fun and intrigue. The list of people to thank will fill this page
and you know who you are; but there really some very key people who need to be mentioned. Firstly Alec and Angie Barr for being
gracious hosts and letting us play in their back yard. Angie, Malita and Jackie for the excellent food and service – 3 courses of the best
food I have had for a long time. Thank you to the Paces for providing the fresh fruit and vegetables and for getting them to the centre
when I kept getting caught up. To John Holliday for gathering together all the strings of the mystery and tying them in knots so that it
would not be an easy crime to solve. To the Lions Dennis and Kerrie for wetting the whistles of our Super Sleuths. The night was a
fundraiser for RaDCA and the Lions and as such it was a very profitable night. Watch this space there may be Who Dunnit? Part 2 but
not on the coldest night of the year!!!!!!
The June/July School holiday Amazing Animal display was magical with Bruiser the Barking Owl, Birds of Prey Friends and trainer
Deb. Many of the community turned out to see Bruiser and get to have a hold if brave enough. The Dogfather ran an excellent work-
shop in basic dog handling for approximately 20 children and were given a chance to teach their cardboard cut outs how to walk properly
on the leash, stop and stay. Thank you to both groups for an excellent morning of learning and entertainment. Please check out the back
page of this edition of the Rolly Rag for the Outer Limits activity for the September school holidays.

The Annual General Meeting of the Community Association is to be held on September 2nd at 7.30 pm in the (big) Hall. Nomination Forms for
Management Committee positions are available from the RTC Office and are to be in the hands of the Centre Manager by COB on Tuesday,
August 26th.
It’s with great sadness that we note the passing of Zeppe Rattazzo. Zeppe lived most of his life in Rollingstone (he was almost 66) on the Berra &
Rattazzo pineapple farm. He was heavily committed to the local Rural Fire Service as their Hencamp Creek representative and has been part of community
life for all those years. We pass on our sincerest condolences to his wife Nina (a Community Association Life Member) and daughter Cynthia. There
would have been 200 people at his funeral – testament to the esteem in which he was held. Vale, Zeppe.
And also with great sadness, we say farewell to Werner Spittler, another long term resident and husband of Seniors Group Secretary, Claire. Again we
express sincere sympathy to Claire and son Colin and family, and pass on our very best wishes. Vale, Werner.
Annette Hawkins is presently receiving treatment for Breast Cancer, and as such is not very well at all. Annette’s been part of the local scene for a long
time now, so please keep her in your thoughts/prayers. Mavis Hagan has recently had eye surgery which didn’t go too well. As someone who’s always
been prepared to generously contribute to the community, we send her our best wishes and look forward to a successful outcome.
We’ve only lately learned of personal misfortune befalling Tanya Moon and our hearts go out to her. To let you know, Tanya, you’re not forgotten and
very much in our thoughts. If we can help, yell!!
Bad luck for Phil Ryan during June when he fell and broke his hip. Oh, Dr. Phil, it’d better be a case of “Physician, heal thyself”. However, we’re all
behind him, channelling our best wishes to help him make a rapid recovery, so he can come home and drive Maureen nuts again!! (And before anyone
takes offence, that’s meant as a little “light relief”.)
Bec Truscott and Keaton Jones have welcomed a baby boy into their world. How special is that? We all send best wishes to the little bloke for a
wonderful life.
“Welcome Home” to Natalie Cardwell and Trevor Geritz – so very good to see them. They’re here for a few weeks visiting with Reg and Debbie before
going to daughter Kate’s place once her baby is born.
And for those we don’t know about or who didn’t want recognition, stay strong and try to be positive.

It is requested that there be NO general vehicular traffic AT ALL on the Village Green. There are notices in place (obviously for a
reason), which are being blatantly ignored, so we would once again draw attention to them and ask that they be adhered to! Thank
you for your co-operation.....
Due to a change in local demographics, we no longer provide the functions/events we once used to. These have been taken over by the local
special-interest groups and, in some cases, by private community members. We see this change in direction more in keeping with our Mission
Statement: The Rollingstone and District Community Association Inc. is dedicated to the development of a central facility for the
benefit and use of the wider community - from tiny tots to seniors - to cater for the largest variety of interests possible: e.g. Family
support, health and welfare services, sporting groups, leisure activities, and special interests of all persuasions. We’d like to think we’re
finally fulfilling our original mandate.
The worth of the RTC just goes from success to success. The services offered, the referrals made, the problems solved, the activities put in
place, etc., etc., just keep on keeping on and growing. Chris is doing a wonderful job and it is so good to see our dream coming true with so
many people of all ages accessing the facility. The RTC and Chris are more than proving their worth and have well and truly earned their
stripes. It can all only be called our very own “Vision Splendid” because it really does help, provide for and contribute to our community in so
many ways.
So good to see so many local faces down at the Landing Markets. The milder weather certainly brings us out!! And the markets are
definitely worth a visit, with quite a diversity of stalls.
And thanks again to Margie, Angie and their girls for the wonderful work they’re doing in/at the Op Shop. This part of our infrastructure
just keeps powering along, and we’re so very grateful for this outstanding input.
From all reports, the “ANIMAL” day, as our contribution to the school holidays, was another great success. Chrissie’s organisation
surely deserves congratulations with lots of kids and parents enjoying what was on offer. Good stuff, and there’s more to come
during September, although this next lot will be a bit different and a lot more active. There’ll be something elsewhere in this issue of
the RAG.
For ALL community members is the Musical Morning being promoted by Barbara Armfield – one of our 2014 Seniors of the Year –
on a Friday morning during the month. It’s not just for seniors (as indicated by some unpleasant remarks on Facebook by those
invisible souls who hide behind their computers but still feel they know it all) but for anyone of any age who likes to sing, play an
instrument and/or enjoy a happy, uncomplicated couple of hours.
And we must put out a really big “THANK YOU” firstly to Ray Jennings for his donation of his handmade model of HMB Endeavour.
It’s absolutely beautiful and we’re so proud to own and display it. Secondly, to Christian Hofmann for offering to build us a display case
when all efforts to procure one seemed to be failing dismally. And then, thirdly, along comes Simon Barnes who offered to provide the glass
required and then followed that up with the news that his company would assemble it for us. Such a wonderful outcome and three very special
men, indeed, to whom we are most indebted and so grateful for their kindness.
From all accounts, the “Who Dunnit” (soooo cold) evening was a success. We must congratulate all those responsible for the
organisation and the 56 who braved the cold weather to attend but it seems they all had lots of fun and good food to eat. Special
thanks to Alec and Angie Barr for hosting the function at their home, on the platform, in amongst their railway carriages.
We’re looking for someone to build us a LECTERN, please. For years now, we’ve used the Lions’, but shortly theirs will be housed in
their new building, so we’ll need one for use in the Hall. If anyone would put up their hand, we’d be most grateful. P.S: We’re not
looking for charity, but we really need a lectern.

Education Focus In Hinchinbrook: BOOST FOR PREP TEACHER AIDES I’m very pleased to report that prep students at state schools on Townsville’s Northern Beaches will benefit from additional hours of Prep teacher aide hours in 2015 as part of the Newman Government’s $54 million Boosting Prep for our children’s future program. The early years of school set the foundation for life-long learning and success, which is why the Newman Government believes it’s vital to invest significantly in this area. I welcome this move to support our youngest learners during a very important period of their education. From next year, children in prep classes at Bluewater, Bohlevale and Rollingstone State Schools will have more access to teacher aides, which will help ensure improved education outcomes. This is great news for families and students on Townsville’s Northern Beaches. FUNDING FOR BLUEWATER SCHOOL I welcome news that Bluewater State School P & C have been successful in securing $35,000 to install new playground equipment through an application to the Gambling Community Benefit Fund. I congratulate the P & C on their successful application. NORTHERN BEACHES BUDGET HIGHLIGHTS The State Budget in June had some highlights for Townsville’s Northern Beaches, including: $758 million to the Townsville Hospital and Health Service and $41 million as part of the $334 million expansion of services
at the Townsville Hospital. $80 million to continue the $200 million Townsville Ring Road project. $1.4 million as part of a $1.8 million project to enhance the Paluma Environmental Education Centre. The final $1 million of the $9.3 million upgrade of the Ergon Energy Substation at Black River.

Rollingstone & District Seniors Over recent weeks several of our Senior Citizens have visited Shirley Ciszek at the RSL Home in Rowes Bay. I am pleased to report that
she seems to have settled in well. Our conversation with her flowed freely, although most of it was down memory lane, but it was good to
see that she remembers us and the time she spent here.
The Seniors’ stall at the markets was extremely good so a big THANK YOU goes to all who donated cakes, biscuits etc. and please keep
them coming for our stall next month.
Bingo was well attended. Our bingo is very laid back, unlike the bingo sessions in town, which, I am told, are taken very seriously. So do
join us.
A group of Seniors visited Maggie Island earlier this month. As it was close to Bastille Day we all dressed up in French attire (lots of red
berets and striped Jumpers). Morning tea was served promptly on our arrival, and then we all did our own thing until a delicious dinner
was served. Afterwards, Seniors were given a bus tour around the Island before being dropped off to inspect the souvenir/dress shops at
Nelly Bay. It was good to meet up with old friends again, and the weather was absolutely glorious.
Seniors are endeavouring to start a musical group for sing-alongs once a month. The proposed date is the second Friday of each month at
the Community Hall at 10.15 a.m. The next sing-along will be on Friday 8th August 2014. So do come along and join us, we have some
tambourines, castanets and other instruments that you can use. I thought we might call ourselves the Rollingstone Rockers (or Rockettes).
The Seniors’ luncheon put on by the Townsville City Council is on Friday 22nd August 2014 at Reid Park. Transport will be provided by
the Council, we will be picked up at the Community Hall about 9 a.m. and returned. So anyone wishing to attend please contact either
myself (Claire Spittler) on 4770-7258, or Pam Stewart on 4770-7607 ASAP.
The Seniors’ Northern Beaches Luncheon which was to be held on the 22nd August 2014 has been cancelled and will now be held at
Bluewater on Friday 19th September 2014. Again, please advise either myself (Claire Spittler) on 4770-7258, or Pam Stewart on 4770-
7607 should you wish to attend.
A group of about ten Seniors went Ten Pin Bowling and had a really good, fun time. For many of us it was the first time we had played
for many years. Some found the balls heavy to lift and rheumatic fingers got stuck in holes! But overall, we had a really good time and
when somebody bowled a strike there was whoops of laughter and clapping. I’m sure we were the noisiest group there which is probably
why we were placed right at the end of the bowling lanes. We’ve all agreed we must play again – soon.

Council Clippings - Division One Hello everyone hope all is well in the far reaches of the Northern Beaches.
I have been busy with budget issues so hence missed last month.
I have had the pleasure of spending some time in Paluma of late and we are so blessed to have this part of the
world in our local government area. The dam is beautiful and a credit to James who is the ranger up there.
We have had crews working on the roads around the districts and this was a long time coming. You would have read about the issues in
the paper which has caused us all in the rural road reserves some problems glad to say that we have now completed and are completing
most of the work on the damage cause by heavy rain associated with Cyclone Ita.
Carbon Tax has been repealed and this means council can pass on the savings through cheaper dump fees and less cost on our waste rates
this will be real savings passed on to all.
Again as always please if you need me to visit or you would just like to have a chat more than happy to make time for each and every one.

Gidday Rollingstone
So there I was, standing in the middle of the scrub with my hands jammed into my coat pockets up to the armpits, shivering like I had
a bad case of the pox and swearing black and blue that the next clown on a push bike that pedals past and says “Morning officer”
would get a TASER prong firmly planted where the sun doesn’t shine. I’d light him up so big, he’d could finish the race on one
wheel. The Paluma Push was a raging success and congrats to the organisers, competitors, sponsors and especially the volunteers,
without whom my mood would have gone downhill faster than the poor bloke who lost his handle bars, brakes and gears on one of the
steepest chook tracks of the whole course. Nah… I’m only joking about being in a bad mood, but it was seriously brass monkey
weather at the “Village in the Clouds”… but probably one of the nicest places this side of anywhere.
Do you remember a month or so ago when I gave you that little pep talk about expectations? Mine, yours, ours, theirs? Yeah? So…
what are the expectations you have of your neighbours? Do you expect to be great mates? Do you expect to be able to have cake and
scones at the side fence or a “refreshing ale” or three or four every now and then? Or are you happy to just be left alone for most of
the time with just an occasional nod or a smile – just to be pleasant. I don’t care one way or the other but for crying out loud folks –
get it sorted. The bottom line… no matter which way you want to go… is respect. My expectation of you is that you show some
respect to the neighbours. If you live on a million acres and can afford to have the stereo volume up to 100 then it’s OK – but if you
live in suburbia with houses within about 100 meters, then show some respect… not everyone wants to listen to “Slim Dusty” or “The
Evil Dead” at 2am. It really is a common sense approach – either get on the best way you choose or agree to disagree but for the most
part, act like adults and try to communicate civilly – remembering at all times the wise words of my dearly departed old Grandad who
once said, “Of course we’d all love to have a beer with Duncan, but maybe Duncan’s had a gut full of all that company and he’s
already as drunk as ten men and he just wants to go to bed.” (Think about that one for a minute and it’ll start to make sense.)
Now on to the important stuff. We’re on the scrounge again to raise money. With a Police Division of over 3,000 square kilometres,
about 400kms of known bush track and nearly 80kms of beach we’re still finding a lot of areas that we can’t access in the big 4x4
company car. Add to that, the traffic accidents that happen in the scrubland area from Insulator Creek, Crystal Creek and Ollera Creek
right through to Clemant State Forest and the Paluma National Park to Hidden Valley, the search and rescue ops that are conducted up
in the mountains behind us, the sly grog runs that take place between Palm Island and anywhere on the beach from Leichhardt Creek
to Cattle Creek and generally the HUGE dramas that the trail bikes and quad bikes create on the beaches in and around the residential
areas of Balgal, Acheron and Mystic.
The QPS have started to purchase “all-terrain vehicles” for some of the major centres throughout the State and one has been recently
provided for the Northern Beaches areas of Townsville (which includes us) and operates out of Deeragun on a “shared” basis. That’s
sensational news for all of us and that vehicle will definitely help us get to those “hard to reach” locations – but we can do more than
wait for our turn to use that vehicle – we want to raise the money to have our own. We want to have the ability to support this
community both reactively and proactively (to be able to respond to a job straight away without going to Deeragun to get the vehicle –
if it’s available – and to be able to conduct patrols so we can hopefully prevent dramas before they happen.)
So… after speaking with our bosses, members of our Disaster Management Group, our local LIONS Club and a few local businesses,
we’ve kicked off our campaign with a grant application, raffles (Bunnings Gift cards, Coles gift cards, ITunes cards, etc) and a Charity
Golf Day at the Mystic Sands Golf Club, 8.30 am on the 31st of August. That will be an “Ambrose” competition (teams of 4 players –
so if you’re a complete gumby at golf like me, you still have a hit and a giggle) with prizes and a BBQ.
We also plan to have the raffle tickets cranking along at the Pineapple Festival this year on the 13th of September with the all-terrain
vehicle from Deeragun on display as well as the opportunity for a quick burn around the paddock – maybe for a gold coin donation.
So have I covered everything? Paluma Push, neighbours, beg for money, all-terrain vehicle, Pineapple Festival on 13/9, Golf Day on
31/8… oh yeah… to the poor hard done by individual who helped themselves to plants from the garden at the golf club without asking
– if you so desperately need a plant for yourself, I’m sure that if you ask nicely, there are countless people who would gladly help you
out. The Golf Club gardens are supported by not only the management and staff but by individuals who take pride in how that place

massive damage they’d done while in power, so we voted in
the LNP. Now the LNP’s trying to fix the mess incurred by
Labor, but, if there was a ballot tomorrow, we’d vote Labor
back in because now we hate the LNP because they’re
trying to extricate the country from that mire at both State
and Federal levels. As Joe Hockey says, “the age of
entitlement is over – stop putting your hands out and put
them in your pockets”. Yup, we don’t like it if it affects our
comfort zone: not even for the betterment of our country or
community. A real case of NIMBY by short-sighted,
selfish, ill-educated and wrong-headed voters.
Infrastructure experts have called insurance rates, house
prices, building costs and fuel prices all “rackets” that are
holding back northern development, well, DUH!!!! Wonder
how much that committee cost the taxpayers – to tell us
something we already knew?
And don’t be scared: The ACCC is there keeping watch for
all of us!! Really.......??? Sorta like the QCCC is there
keeping watch on all of us.....really (again)???
Reference Todd Carney and all the other foolish young
things (as we all were at that age) over the years: stupid,
drunken behaviour doesn’t taint a team, or a sport, it taints
the individual. Did Cronulla and the NRL need to come
down quite so heavily and end a career because of a silly,
harmless photo?

G.Day All, Finally on their third attempt our club seniors got to go out on their ROSIE fishing and crabbing trip to
Cattle Creek. Previous trips had to be cancelled due to bad weather.
They all had a great day, they caught fourteen keepers and one mud crab and released quite a few undersize and
Jennies. They are a top crew to take out, they have so much fun and all get along so well together. The Rollingstone
Seniors have booked another ROSIE fishing trip for the 29th of July. This time they are going to Magnetic Island for another fun
filled day. TOP STUFF.
Our clubs annual Italian Night at the Community Hall was another huge success with
Italian food and plenty of it. We played team quoits with lots of encouragement from the
sidelines. Always plenty of laughs. The winning team was team four. Congratulations
guys. WELL DONE.
MONTHLY FISHING COMP.
Fish of the month went to Peter Cummins with a 90 cm Gold Spot. Mystery weight went to
Tom Ruddick with a 48cm Finger Mark. Again well done people. The Lound’s Fresh
Seafood Raffle was won by Rob Thompson. Good prize Rob. YUM.
We welcomed another two new members, our club is certainly growing. We have a club
full of the nicest people.

What is Cupping and how can it help tight Muscles and
pain?
Cupping is a form of treatment used by Traditional Chinese
Medicine Practitioners and Acupuncturists. Its origins extend
back as far as 3000 BC and evidence of it used by Egyptians
documented in the earliest medical texts Ebers Papyrus 1550
BC. It dates back to 1000BC in Chinese archaeology and
Hippocrates ancient Greece (400BC).
Cupping, traditionally uses a flame to the cup then placed on
the skin, where it creates suction, the skin is drawn up into
the cup. This is known as dry or fire cupping. Cups can be
made of glass plastic or silicon, early ones made of earthen-
ware. Plastic or rubber cups have suction created by a pump,
which can control the amount of suctions applied. Magnets
are also used with cups to add magnetic therapy to the treat-
ment. Wet cupping, combines cupping and blood letting,
which is a form of controlled bleeding to the local area. A
Sliding cup; the cup suction is slid over an area such as the
back which is usually oiled to create a form of massage. The
cup stays in place for five to fifteen minutes. It is believed by
some to help treat pain, deep scar tissues in the muscles and
connective tissue, muscle knots, and swelling. Cupping brings
fresh blood flow to those tight muscles which in turn flows
electrolytes nutrients hormones and endorphins to the area.
Cupping does leave forms of bruising which disappears with-
in a few days, but it also gives great relief of the tight muscles
deprived with stagnant from blood flow.

Most people are aware that I am very happy to be back at RSL (Queensland Branch) Rollingstone Sub Branch again as
the President. For those who don’t know me, I was the inaugural Vice President and Treasurer of Rollingstone RSL when we formed in
April 2000 under Charter from RSL (Queensland Branch). Our inaugural President was Mick Coulson and our Secretary; Wayne Rich. I
was elected President of Rollingstone RSL in 2004 and President of the North Queensland District in August 2009. At the State AGM in
June 2013, I was elected State Vice President and appointed by the Board of RSL (Queensland Branch) as the Chair of the Legislation and
Awards Committee. Rod Girvan was elected President of Rollingstone RSL in 2010 and stood down in February this year. In April 2004,
we completed construction of the Balgal Beach Memorial. Rollingstone RSL celebrated its tenth birthday in 2010 as we hosted the North
Queensland District AGM at the Rollingstone Community Centre. We always have a successful ANZAC Day Dawn Service with usually
about six hundred participants. This year the ANZAC Day Morning Service at 10 0’clock was conducted with somewhat a reduced
participation rate, however this is usual when ANZAC Day is commemorated over a long weekend. On Behalf of the members of the Sub
Branch; thank you to all our visitors and supporters who have done so much to ensure the successful conduct of our services over our
history and continue to do so.
RSL (Queensland Branch) has certainly changed much over the past eight years since 2006 when significant changes were adopted in our
modus of operations, constitutional change and adoption of current governance practices. These changes can be clearly seen at Sub Branch
and District level; Rollingstone Sub Branch and North Queensland District both became incorporated entities in 2010 and therefore
adopted the Board management of governance. RSL (Queensland Branch) has conducted a comprehensive Tax Compliance program and
compliance change with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profit Commission (ACNC).
During 2013, RSL (Queensland Branch) established a new Company (Limited by Guarantee); Mates4Mates. The Company Mates4Mates
has one shareholder; RSL (Queensland Branch). The first Mates4Mates Family Recovery Centre was opened in Brisbane on 15 March
2013 and the Townsville Family Recovery Center was opened in Townsville at 40 Anne St, Aitkenvale on 07 May 2014. The Townsville
FRC was opened by Ben Robert-Smith VC, MG and has had many VIP inspections, including a private visit by the Governor General,
General Sir Peter Cosgrove recently when he was in North Queensland. I encourage any RSL members, RSL family members or
community supporters to visit the Townsville Centre at any time (the entrance is located behind the Aitkenvale Post Office off Wotten St).
The Mates4Mates program includes vibrant, innovative and member driven activities planned, coordinated and where necessary lead by
competent and qualified experts, many of whom give of their spare time voluntarily to assist the Brave Mates. The Brave Mates are drawn
entirely from current and ex-servicemen and women from the Australian Defence Forces, regular and reserve and their families. Note:
There is no age limit nor are the Participants confined to specific service activities, theatres or areas of operations.

opportunities for people with a disability and
senior citizens. The club operates "ROSIE", a
purpose built 7.9m vessel with a flat deck and including an accessible toilet. The side and
front ramps provide access for wheelchairs and passengers. ROSIE is a smooth riding,
stable boat that travels in a flat attitude, excellent for carriage of people with a disability
and seniors on fishing trips and river cruising. For further information please see second

JULY NEWSLETTER On Saturday 7th June Cootharinga’s merry fishermen, Troy, Cameron, Zaine, Gary, Duncan, and
Steve set sail on the high seas to enjoy a spot of fishing. Unfortunately the weather was not good
and we had to stay in the Ross River. As we headed out towards the river mouth we threw out a
couple of crab pots and went out to the shipping channel hoping we might be able to fish there.
Unfortunately it was far too rough so we headed back into the river. It didn’t help either that
some-one forgot to take their Kwells and was not at all well.
After several moves all we managed to bring in was a sea snake that no one wanted to take off
the hook, it was great when it managed to work its self free. We caught some undersize fish and
crabs which we released to grow for next time. Rod did get a couple of hook ups but lost them.
All on board were regulars except for Zaine and although he did not catch anything, I am sure we
will see him out again on ROSIE as we all had a really good time.
A big thank you to all the staff, in particular to Noel, who were deckies for the day, due to my
debilitating state. No I was not hung over I have a broken ankle.
We are all looking forward to the next trip…..Deckie Karon and Captain Kevin.

Our four club reps competed in the prestigious Dunn Cup during July and performed extremely well , coming a
creditable 9th out of 19 teams. Michael , Graeme , Tim and Wally certainly rose to the occasion with what is believed to be the best
performance from any team our little club has had represent us. Well done guys for a great effort in the most difficult competition in the
North Queensland region.
We currently have nomination sheets on the board for Mens Triples and Mixed Triples which we be playing over the next few weeks. All
members are encouraged to participate. Because these are not district champion of champions events , we will be endeavouring to ensure
the teams are reasonably evenly matched. We would love to see some of our new bowlers take part in a (slightly) more serious form of the
game and get an appreciation of championship bowls.
Saturday bowls has been suffering of late with little or no games being played. While the obvious success of Sunday morning
games is a major contributor to this situation , I can only encourage any members wishing to play on Saturdays to get in contact with each
other and organise a game. We have visitors turning up each week looking for a game and are being turned away when none of our
members are present. Saturday comp fees have been reduced to $7 to align with the Sunday fees for barefoot bowls.
I am delighted to welcome two more new members to our club , namely Mal and Cathy Dorey. These guys have been so
enjoying Sunday bowls for the last few months that they have decided to join up. While Cathy , in particular , is still struggling with some
of our bowling terms ( you can only play with other members BOWLS ) they have brought a breath of fresh air to our group and we
welcome them warmly.
As indicated , Sunday morning Barefoot Bowls continues to flourish with new players turning up every week . This is a very
social morning with both new and seasoned bowlers enjoying the different formats that we dream up. The main criteria is that you come
along determined to enjoy yourself and be present at the club by 9.30am at the latest.

With weather like we have been experiencing over the last month or so, why would you choose to live
anywhere else. Crystal clear days, bearable temperatures, a golf course in fabulous condition, cold beer,
friendly people: what more can we ask for!
Tourists frequenting the club over the winter months are envious of our weather and lifestyle.
By the time that you read this months “Rag”, if you have not paid your annual membership fees, you
only have a few days left to do so. If annual fees are unpaid at the start of August, you will be required to pay
the normal fee to play the course and to play in a weekly comp. The annual fee has been kept at the same as
last year with a few new deals to encourage membership from outside areas. Social membership is invited to
non-golfers/bowlers
Sunday morning barefoot bowls is becoming very popular with 15-20 players each week. Any one is
welcome to play and learn the skill of lawn-bowls being led by master bowler Phil Small.
We plan to have a new Friday night “pick-a-box ‘ promotion in place by the start of August. There
will be some major prizes to be won and a jackpot draw. Prizes can be won simply by being in the club on a
numbered seat and having ½ hourly draws to be in it to win.
The normal Goose club and raffles continue. The goose club jackpot has again been recently
claimed.
Preparations are under way for the annual Disaster Management Fundraising Day. This event was
missed last year but is planned for Aug 31. It will be a fun day involving 9 holes of challenging golf, lunch, auction, raffles and
music from “Two little Louies “.
Meals continue on Tuesdays and Friday nights and we welcome to quote for any function (birthday, anniversary,
wedding ,divorce ) you may be considering.

Fisherman’s Landing Fishing & Social Club News
Hello and welcome Cyril, lets read what our Club has been up to for the last month.
The attendance at our club BBQ on Friday 27 June was very pleasing despite the cooler weather.
Local identity Ken Turner and his lovely partner Joy attended, at our invitation, to speak of their very satisfying work with a club called
Leisure Accessible Inc. Ken gave a short but interesting and informative talk about how he and some willing helpers take disadvantaged
children and seniors out for a day on the water either cruising or fishing on the good ship “Rosie” of whom no doubt most of you have
heard. Club President Garry then presented Ken with a cheque for $250.00 to help Leisure Accessible Inc continue their outstanding
work.
Ken also indicated that they need more skippers to take “Rosie” out on the occasions he is unavailable. That person would need to be
skilled in boat operations and seamanship, he said ideally a retired or working professional fisherperson would be the person they require.
But, in volunteering don’t expect any remuneration for your work as the satisfaction of hearing the squeals of delight and seeing happy
smiling faces at the end of the day is ample reward. Interested, give Ken a ring on 47707276 or 0407674652 to discuss your experience

Last month we introduced a new segment in our article called Dickie’s Fishing News. We are about to include another segment on The
Fishermans Landing Markets submitted by Rebecca. Of course the new segments will decrease the amount of waffle I need to write
which would please most.
We welcome new members, The Sharp Family from Mutarnee. Doug, Lurlene and Mac we hope you have a happy and satisfying tenure
in your Club.
Due to an ongoing, continuous, never ending IT problem we still cannot get copies of the Committee Meeting Minutes or advice of
upcoming functions out to Club members via E-mail. The darn thing will just not work! So, as an interim measure, a copy of the minutes
will be displayed on the notice board at The Landing at each monthly BBQ. Additionally, Club President Garry has introduced a segment
at the monthly BBQ where a general but short discussion period between members and the committee will be held to air any perceived
problems, receive suggestions on what direction we should be going with the Club, types of functions the members would like to see
organized etc. Come along and have your say.
Now who do I have dirt on this month? Ah yes, Rebecca. You know Rebecca who now runs The Fishermans Landing Markets, happy –
yes, bright – yes, bubbly – yes, a go getter – yes, smart – ye.. ah, well, hold on there. Not too smart when it comes to running or in
particular drawing a raffle. Yes, it was all above board and tickety-boo but Bec, when you use one of those cards with spaces for 50
names there is a tag on the back you pull out to reveal the winning number. No, you don’t scour the area looking for a numbers barrel
with 100 numbered balls then laboriously spin the barrel until eventually you get a number 50 or under. We bet you don’t do that again.
The lucky winner was the Coffee Man.
DICKIES FISHING NEWS: The State Government has released the Coral Reef fin fish closure dates for this year to assist anglers in
their planning. The closure dates for 2014 are 21 October to 25 October inclusive and 19 November to 23 November inclusive. What is
the bet that it will be blowing a 25 knot southeasterly during the period making the weather a far better conservation element of our fishing
areas in the north than any green zone. Our Club monitorsVHF frequencies 16 and 22 also 27 MHZ channels 88 and 90. Leave expired
flares or EPIRBS at The Landing for safe disposal and please submit your trip sheets with either Townsville or Ingham Coast Guard.

Ron Condren (Condo) continues to improve slowly after a very long time on the sick list. It is pleasing to see him about again and,
boosted recently with some very good news he has been seen with a smile on his weathered face. Hurry back Condo.
The NRL State of Origin series for 2014 is now done and dusted with many members and in particular visitors watching the games on the
Club’ big screen TV.
Finally, a reminder that most of our members are now unfinancial so please get those renewal applications submitted along with payment.
It is still a bargain at $50.00 for family membership and $30.00 for a single. We don’t want the embarrassment of asking you for a $10.00
visitor fee per head at the next Club BBQ on 29th August because you are an unfinancial member.

recent very kind and generous donation to our Club. It shows our local MP really does look after the little people within his electorate.
Now then Cyril, what did you think of the Club’s achievements this month? Ah, well it was good to see they made a cash donation to a
very worthy cause, they did do two markets and put on a great end of month BBQ for our members but, what about the great fishing
competition that has been mooted since December last year. Sorry Cyril I am told by the sub-committee it is still in the planning stages,
on the back burner, in the pipeline, actively being pursued, on the agenda et al. So it hasn’t been forgotten.

Exciting Changes to the Smoke Alarm Subsidy Scheme!
Since August 2013, Deaf Services Queensland has been providing the Smoke Alarm Subsidy Scheme to the community. As of July 2014, there have been
some significant changes to the eligibility of the scheme meaning more and more community members may be eligible to receive a deaf friendly smoke
alarm at a fraction of the cost.If you are Deaf or experience hearing loss, Deaf Services Queensland may be able to provide you with a subsidised smoke
alarm that meets the needs of you and your family and keep you safe in your home.The Smoke Alarm Subsidy Scheme means that all eligible deaf and
hard of hearing adults and children can afford to keep themselves and their families safe with the best specialised smoke alarms.The Smoke Alarm
Subsidy Scheme is available if you live in Queensland and meet any of the following criteria:
• are Deaf or hearing impaired • have a current Concession Card
The Scheme is also now available to people who are Deaf and hard of hearing who do not have a Concession card.
For people who have a Concession card, you will only need to contribute $20 to the cost of the smoke alarm. People who are in the Deaf and hard of
hearing community who don’t have Concession cards only need to pay $50.

FOR ROLLINGSTONE, BALGAL BEACH and surrounds

I was given a female wallaby joey whose mother had been hit by a car.
This happened Pineapple Festival day 2011 and I named her Apple. Because she
was over 1.5kgs she was never as calm and as friendly as those raised at a
younger age. She was very skittish and I tried not to encourage this behaviour. I
was fortunate to be able to pat her while she was feeding, only every now and
then , which was a big thing. After release she would return every few days for a
feed and then every few weeks and eventually monthly when finally she returned
home (after the bush fire in 2013). I had not seen her since then until the other
night when I heard the front screen rattle. I opened it to find a wallaby waiting
to come in. Bemused, I let it in and it sauntered through the house, stopping
once to look at us. I then realized by a distinctive mark that it was Apple. I was
overjoyed but she took it all in her stride and continued through and out to the
backyard. Another carer was here and also recognized her. Now why after all
that time would she return home and go through the house when she had never
been inside as a young one. She has become a fine, fit and healthy wallaby.
When such a thing like this happens it humbles me and reminds me why I love being a carer. You can say and............so............ but
remember these are wild native Australian animals………………...Gaye

Rollingstone and District Lions Club Inc G’day to all at Rollingstone, and what a beautiful part of Paradise we live in. Shirley & I have just returned from the
Lions International Convention in Toronto, and it really reinforced for us how lucky we are to live in Australia, and
especially in the wonderful community of Rollingstone.
As I take the President’s Chair for the first time since our Rollingstone And District Lions Club was first Chartered, I am amazed at how
much has been achieved by Lions in our community since that first meeting back in August 2006. While I am proud to be a Lion, I am
also humbled at how many service activities, projects and community events that Lions have introduced to our community by the hard
working and dedicated members of this Lions Club. Already in July we have:
Supported the Northern Beaches Festival Committee with Raffle Sales and Barbecue
Supported RADCA with the Murder Mystery Fundraiser for them at Lion Angie’s premises
Commenced our Wednesday Night “Cook’s Night Off” barbecues for our NQ visitors at the Big 4 Caravan Park
(Thank you Gaynor & John)
Provided Breakfast at the School as we support our Junior Leo’s program
Provided a “Sausage Sizzle” for the Townsville to Cairns Children’s Cancer Institute annual bike ride, and wasn’t it great also

Prayers are with you Nina and Cynthia, and also with Mario and Nellie and your families at this time. Zeppe was a wonderful,
cheerful character with a great sense of community, and he will be sorely missed.
Installed a cement path for Lions Maureen and Phil Ryan - great to have you back home Phil and hope your broken hip is
healing well.
Thank you to all of our Lions who continue to support all of our activities – your efforts really do “make a difference” every day in our
part of the world.
Preparations are also well advanced for the annual Rollingstone Pineapple Festival, staged jointly between Lions and RADCA, and I
thank all of those in the greater Rollingstone area for your commitment and support to this annual event which will be held on Saturday
13th September. I hope there are many floats and decorated vehicles/bikes this year to showcase all that is “Great” about Rollingstone and
our humble “Pineapple”.
At our recent Lions Changeover Dinner, I advised the club members of my Goals and Aspirations for this Lions Year, which are

PENSIONS AND OVERSEAS TRAVEL:
From 1 July, the rules on how much you can be paid while living or travelling outside Australia are changing.
The changes will affect you if you depart Australia on or after 1 July 2014 and you stay outside Australia for more than 26 weeks, or are
paid under the terms of an international social security agreement.
To continue receiving your full rate of Australian pension you will generally need to have spent 35 years of your working life in
Australia. This is an increase from the current requirement to have 25 years of Australian working life residence.
Australian working life residence is the period of time you have lived in Australia between the age of 16 and age pension age. You do not
need to have worked or paid tax during this period. You just need to have been an Australian resident for a period of 35 years between the
age of 16 and age pension age.
If you have less than 35 years Australian working life residence your rate of payment will be reduced. For example, if you have 27 years
Australian working life residence, you will get 27/35ths or 77% of the maximum means-tested rate of payment.
How leaving Australia may affect your payment
You will also have to tell us about any changes in your circumstances while you are away.
The information on this page provides a guide only. There are other circumstances which may also affect your payments while outside
Australia.
There is a change to the pension payment rates for eligible customers who depart Australia on or after 1 July 2014. Go to Pension

Pension payment rates while absent from Australia
If you can be paid your pension indefinitely while you are outside Australia, your rate of payment may change after 26 weeks. Your rate
of payment will be based on the amount of time you lived in Australia as an Australian resident between the age of 16 and age pension
age.
If you depart Australia before 1 July 2014, you will usually need to have lived in Australia as anAustralian resident for 25 years in order
to continue receiving your full rate of pension after 26 weeks. If you have lived in Australia less than 25 years you will receive a smaller
rate of pension after 26 weeks outside Australia.
If you are already outside Australia on 1 July 2014, you can continue to receive your payment under the 25 year rules, unless you return
and stay in Australia for 26 weeks or more.
If you depart Australia on or after 1 July 2014, you will usually need to have lived in Australia as an Australian resident for 35 years in
order to continue receiving your full rate of pension after 26 weeks. If you have lived in Australia less than 35 years you will receive a
smaller rate of pension after 26 weeks outside Australia.
If you get a pension under a social security agreement, the amount that you get paid while you are outside Australia is decided by that
agreement. Under most agreements, the amount that you get will reduce when you leave Australia.
There are specific rules covering the rate of pension you will be paid while you are overseas if you are travelling to New Zealand.
Returning to Australia
In most cases you do not need to tell us that you have returned to Australia, for example if you have returned after a short trip and your
payment remained current throughout your absence, you do not need to call us. You need to contact us when you return if you:
Are returning to live in Australia after living overseas
Get your payment under an international social security agreement
Have been asked to show proof of your reason for travel, or your payment or concession card stopped while you were away and it was
not automatically restored when you returned.

At the time of the Spanish Armada - 1588 - when England destroyed many of the Spanish ships, England also destroyed a large
part of their Oak forests to build their own ships. While England is growing new Oaks it will be centuries before the Oak forests
are grown to the extent they were before the Armada. However, as most of the ships before and after the Armada were built from
English Oak there is a lot to catch up on. We are cutting down our own forests at a tremendous rate with hardly any nurseries to grow the
species we log, even though we know that forests are the best of traps for carbon. As long as we carry on this fashion we will not only
lose some of these species of trees but we will also lose the associated wildlife: the birds, the mammals, the reptiles the insects and
arachnids and much more, the orchids, the ferns, mosses, etc.. In Australia, Queensland has the worst record for the number of bird
extinctions in the country, at the same time our population is growing at an alarming rate and that requires more land converted from
forests to growing more food crops. As a naturalist I know - and so do you - that more animals and plants are becoming extinct every
year. The rise in population in England and here and elsewhere means that we will eventually destroy ourselves as a species. Our
wildlife knows how to keep the balance. Maybe we do not want to go down that path. What is your answer to overpopulation?
The Magpie in England and Scotland is not the same as our Magpie. Those Colwyn and I saw in England are longer and slimmer than
ours. Like ours, theirs is black and white but, in the British Magpie the feathers are strongly glossed with blue, green and purple sheen.
While the British Magpie is in the Family Corvidae along with their Crows, our Magpies are in the Family Artamidae along with
Butcherbirds, Wood-swallows and Currawongs…………….Roy Mackay

Once again it is my pleasure to stand in for your regular correspondent, Les Hyland who is away on holidays.
Paluma, this month has been spectacularly uncloudy, with sunny, warm days predominating. At the time of writing, rainfall for the
month was only 3.5 ml. It has been perfect weather for the many tourists who have wended their way up here to explore the Rainforest
and Lookout walks and make use of the picnic facilities on the Paluma Village Green and McClelland’s Lookout. The crisp, clear nights
have enabled spectacular skies for star-gazers with Orion, The Southern Cross and many other stars and constellations sparkling and the
Milky Way showing up as a white band against the dark backdrop of space. Nights are cold but then this is a perfect reason to sit around
a roaring fire, enjoying good conversation with friends and family or simply watching the telly. The sharply cold dawns – down to 2.5
degrees recently – are small price to pay.
The Historic Photograph display, open every Tuesday from 11.00 am to 1.00 pm in the Paluma Community Hall, continues to draw a
number of tourists and visitors each week. There are nearly 200 photographs, framed and in display albums, devoted to Paluma’s
pioneering and war-time history as well as a video to watch of birds found in Paluma and the surrounding country, photographed by
Brian O’Leary. The video is very popular with bird-lovers and is for sale at $12.00 As the Rainforest Inn is closed on Tuesdays, coffee,
tea and soft drinks are available for visitors needing refreshment.
Sunday, 20th July saw Paluma’s population swell by several hundred and cars lined the road in the village from end to end and spilled
out into the five acre blocks of Hussey Road. The reason for this influx was the annual Paluma Push bike race which this year attracted a
record 628 cyclists. This race, which is held to raise funds for the Rural Fire Brigade, attracts both competition and recreational riders
who tackle a gruelling course starting at the western end of Paluma village and passing through various terrains; wet tropics rainforest,
boggy creeks, and rough, rugged cattle properties to finish at Hidden Valley. The course distance is approximately 65 km for
competition riders and 42km for recreational riders. For this year’s race, a cold, frosty daybreak was followed by a sunny day, ensuring
a dry track and good conditions for the cyclists. Nearly all Paluma residents participated in one way or another; as riders or as one of
the many volunteers who, among many tasks, act as traffic and parking controllers, administer first aid, count the riders going through
each check-point, collect wrecked bikes and keep radio contact with base and other checkpoints. Fortunately, this year there were no
serious mishaps, though some of the more treacherous sections of the course damaged both bodies and machines. A special award was
given this year to the first rider to reach Check-point 1 at Paluma Dam. This went to Daniel Rubach. Congratulations must go to the
organisers of this event and especially to Len Cook who co-ordinated activities.
Paluma’s next big event is an Art and Craft exhibition which is one of the activities of the Northern Beaches Festival. This will be
opened on Sunday, 27th July at the Paluma Hall. Local artists will display work in the hall while craft and market stalls will be operating
on the Village Green. We are looking forward to visitors enjoying a day on the mountain……… Colwyn Campbell..

PLAYGROUP Welcome to Playgroup Term 3. I hope you have all had a fantastic break and are ready for a busy time this term, we will be having a lot
of fun making and creating with a range of different mediums. We have an excursion planned this term, so get your thinking caps on
and bring along your ideas of places you would like to take the children.
As you will see from the program we have a lot happening this term! We will be branching out into our local schools on the 3 rd
Tuesday at Bluewater State School and the 2nd Thursday at Rollingstone State School each month. We are hoping this will be a huge
success and will get the children more familiar with the school environment. We have teamed up with Bunnings Warehouse and they
will be hosting some of our playgroup sessions at our centres and also we will be travelling for some of our sessions to Bunnings
Warehouse North Shore.
Memberships are due now, Please fill in a new
membership form and media consent form and
return it to me A.S.A.P. Membership is still
$20 a year and only $3 a session for a family.

I had heard several people talking about the scarecrow lady. It was great to finally meet her (and her scarecrow) on Balgal Beach Rd
Q: What made you decide to build a scarecrow?
A: I think they’re fun. I had studied sculpture at art school and had not done very much in that area for many years. Also the stuff
to make her was free!
Q: Does she have a name?
A: Yes of course. I had friends staying with me at the time and they came up with the name Jemima. Someone else added Puddleduck
and it stuck.
Q: I hear that you dress her up for different holidays and put her out the front of your house.
A: Yes. That was a throw away comment by one of my friends and I started to collect a wardrobe to dress her for special days. It all
started with Australia Day.
Q: How many more outfits does she have now?
A: Well let me see. Her every day one of course. Then there is Easter, Valentines Day, Queen’s Birthday and Anzac Day, but that
was a bit of a disaster because I dressed her in camouflage gear and she sort of disappeared into the background.
Q: It sounds like you go to a lot of trouble. What do you get out of it?
A: That’s easy. People pull up and take pictures. I see their faces smiling and laughing. Life is pretty good when you can make com-
plete strangers smile isn’t it.
Q: Do you plan to keep doing it?
A: Yes, but I have to make a small adjustment. Her mouth (cut from an old thong) is kept on by a little piece of stick which branches
off the main support. I painted it like a cigarette but that is not very PC especially when kids come to take photos at Easter.
So I plan to find another way to hold her mouth in place before I put her out again.
Q: Finally, would you like to see more scarecrows around the place?
A: Oh yes. It could become a reason for people to travel out here.
Quite a few locals have asked me to help them make a scarecrow. I tell them it is so easy they don’t need help but I am always happy
to assist them. Now people send me pictures of scarecrows that they see on their travels so I have plenty of pictures to give people
ideas.
