0ur ProvincialMESSAGE FROM THE PROVINCIAL
Meetlng challenges ls nothing nev to the Redemptorists of theToronto Provllcel
Flfty years ago the Vlce-Provlnce of Toronto decided that, forthe good of the Church h Canada and the growth of our Redemptor-tst family, it had to become an lndependent Provhce. Thele'werethose who thought !t would be the end of the Vlce-Province and ltsmembers. There were others - the malorlty - who sald lt vas a steplorvard that had to be taken. In those days, to be an lndependentProvlnce meant havlng the necessary tnstltutlons qf formatlon. Theconfreres declded there had to be a mlno! seminary, So the TorontoProvlnce and st. Mary's College were borD together. That was 1918.
Fifty years late! the Redemptorlsts of the Toronto Plovince arestill meetlng challenges. A recognltlon ol the democratic demandsol our tlmes, the need lor shared responslbtltty in the llght ol Vatt-can II, led io ou! Provlnclal Chapte! of January 1968. For the flrsttime the Provincla-l and his consultors x'ere elected rather thanappointed. Four Counclllors were elected to asslst them. The sameProvlrclal. Chapter that elected them made the difflcult but neces-sary dectslon to dlscontlnue our Mlnor Semlnary at st, Mary's. TheChapter decided thal, ln this day attd age, lt ls essential that youngprospectiye Redemptorists grrsue thelr early educatlon ln thelrhome elvlronment among thelr peers. lltls vlew seemed strength-elled by the lact that our enrollment has steadlly decltned. A decls-ton had to be made: lt was made. This is 1968.

THE 1IUMAN RACE TODAY IS PASSING through anew stage in its history. Profound and rapld chalgesare enguuing the whole world, A real soclal and cul-tural transformatlol, olre whlch ls havlng tremedousimpact on the whole Church ard her prlestiood ts tak-log place before our verT/ eyes. Structures and lnstltu-tlons whlch once served the People of cod so well aregtvtng way to make room for nea.er torms whlch arestiU ln the process of emerglng. An agony ol glovth lsocurrhg ln the Church - one whlch it ls hoped wtlleyentually develop lorms of human liJe and flexibleenough to allow the mystery of growth towa.rds lhepriesthood to take place more h keeptng wtth the con-ditlons of our tlmes.
St. Ma-ry's College tor FIFTY years has served thePeople ol God ln Canada as a preparatory Coltege loryou[g men lnterested ln dedlcatlng their llyes to GODand hls People through the Prtesthood. Many becameBlshops, Rellglous and Dloscesan prlests, and outstand-ing Chdstians ln every walk of llfe. We are proud ofthe men vho have caught the spirtt ol St. Mary,s asthey passed through her halls down the years. Ard weare more thall proud of the gratd old RedemptoristcoDfreres who down through the years dedlcated thelrllves so selflessly lo thelr folmatlon.
It ls n'lth deep regret that we close the last page lnthe book ol St. Mary's College. However, we are con-ftdent and hopeful that the pain and agony ol the transl-tloll perlod wtll be some small contrlbution towardsour common ta-sk of renewal, and we feel certaln that
its closing is a genulne response to the actlon ol the Holy Spirlt and aslgrr marklng the end of one era and the beghnlng of a new period in thelife of the CHURCE ard her prlesthood.

Goodbyes are neyer easy but they are sometimes lor the best.Every young man who lelt home to go to St. Mary's In the past 50years kno\rrs the pang of Goodbye. But he $'as glad to say Goodbyebecause lt meart a step forward to his great goa.l of the Redemptor-ist prlesthood.
With the same mlxed feellngs we now say coodbye to St. Mary,sCollege. We glve thanks to God for the wonderJul years that St.Mary's prepared so many Redemptorists and Christlan Lay leadersand we look lorward to the challenge of Ilndlng new forms for thepreparatlon of future Redempiorlsts.

Oraduat ion 1967.. .A GRADUATES SALUTE
And the beat goes on . . . and t imepasses by, yet even though there isa c i rcular cycle in history we areevolv ing. Every generat ion of mensurpass those of the previous. I amin many ways more educated than1:]y parents just as they were in re-Iat ion to their parents. Today, man'sthirst for knowledge is so great thatmen are being eaten by the desire toIearn. For what is i t to learn andnot to experience 1i fe. What is i t tosee and not feel . The struggle todayis not to be educated. rather i t is tobe an indiv idual . To be a person whocan create something personal sothat we can give that creat ion to ourfel low men - or s lmply the conf l ictis to LOVE.
St, Mary 's has given us, thegrads of 1967, the exper ience of in-div idual i ty, f reedom, and respons i -bl l i ty, such that love comes down tothe real i ty of our s i tuat ion.
St. Mary 's has provided us wi ththe freedom to be abLe to respond inour own way, to the re spon s ib i l i t ie sof a l iv ing person in a real commun-i tv.
St. Mary's has shown us how tobecome an indiv idual person in thebody of Christ - i f we chose thepr iesthood as our vocat ion or not . . .but in al l that has been said, i t is soeasy to s i t and look upon that road;the real task is in walking i t . Whenthe students of St . Mary 's just s i tand Iook at what is before them.then the t ime has come to close St.Mary's for i t has lost i ts foundat ion.
- Chr istopher Rast in
At such an occasion as th is, wethe grads would l ike to thank thosewho have made these feel lngs pos-s ib le .
To the students our s incere gra-t i tude. In them we exper ience hap-piness, sorrow, v j .ctory and loss. Inthe community that we formed al l ofus came cLoser to being Chrlst ians.
To our parents we give our grea-test love. They gave us 1i fe. Theyare suffer i .ng with us the pangs ofmatur ing. They wi l l cont inue to beour rock of secur i ty and l ight ofIove.
To the fathers and brothers -our thanks. I f we could only catchsome of their r involvement ' , 'wis-dom', 'determinat ion' , and'devo-t ion' . They are the true heros of ouryouth.
As a conclusion to what has beensaid, we would l ike to repeat thesewords by Cardinal Cushing . . .
"A great deal of ta lent is lost inthe world today for want of a l i t t lecourage. Every day sends to theirgraves obscure men whom t imidi typrevented from making a f i rst ef fort ;who i f they could have been inducedto begin, would in al l probabi l i tyhave gone great lengths in the careerof fame. The fact is that to do any-thing in the world worth doing wemust not stand back shiver ing andthinking of the danger but jump inand scramble through as wel l as wecan."
