The 2020 Lenten season begins on Ash Wednesday, February 26, for Latin-rite Catholics and ends with Easter Sunday on April 12.
During Lent, we are asked to devote ourselves to seeking the Lord in prayer and reading Scripture, to service by giving alms, and to practice self-control through fasting. Many know of the tradition of abstaining from meat on Fridays during Lent, but we are also called to practice self-discipline and fast in other ways throughout the season. Contemplate the meaning and origins of the Lenten fasting tradition in this reflection. In addition, the giving of alms is one way to share God's gifts-not only through the distribution of money, but through the sharing of our time and talents. As St. John Chrysostom reminds us: "Not to enable the poor to share in our goods is to steal from them and deprive them of life. The goods we possess are not ours, but theirs." (Catechism of the Catholic Church, no. 2446).
In Lent, the baptized are called to renew their baptismal commitment as others prepare to be baptized through the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, a period of learning and discernment for individuals who have declared their desire to become Catholics.
The key to fruitful observance of these practices is to recognize their link to baptismal renewal. We are called not just to abstain from sin during Lent, but to true conversion of our hearts and minds as followers of Christ. We recall those waters in which we were baptized into Christ's death, died to sin and evil, and began new life in Christ.
Fast & Abstinence Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. In addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence.
For members of the Catholic Church, the norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal. The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding upon members of the Latin Catholic Church from age 14 onwards.
Members of the Eastern Catholic Churches are to observe the particular law of their own sui iuris Church.
If possible, the fast on Good Friday is continued until the Easter Vigil (on Holy Saturday night) as the "paschal fast" to honor the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus, and to prepare ourselves to share more fully and to celebrate more readily his Resurrection.
La temporada de Cuaresma 2020 comienza el Miércoles de Ceniza, 26 de Febrero, para los Católicos de rito latino y termina con el Domingo de Pascua el 12 de Abril.
Durante la Cuaresma, se nos pide que nos dediquemos a buscar al Señor en oración y en las lecturas de las Escrituras, al servicio dando limosna y a practicar el autocontrol a través del ayuno. Muchos conocen la tradición de abstenerse de comer carne los viernes durante la Cuaresma, pero también estamos llamados a practicar la autodisciplina y ayunar de otras maneras durante la temporada. Contempla el significado y los orígenes de la tradición del ayuno cuaresmal en esta reflexión. Además, dar limosna es una forma de compartir los dones de Dios, no solo a través de la distribución de dinero, sino también a través del intercambio de nuestro tiempo y talentos. Como nos recuerda San Juan Crisóstomo: "No permitir que los pobres compartan nuestros bienes es robarles y privarlos de la vida. Los bienes que poseemos no son nuestros, sino de ellos". (Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica, no. 2446). En la Cuaresma, los bautizados están llamados a renovar su compromiso bautismal a medida que otros se preparan para ser bautizados a través del Rito de Iniciación Cristiana de Adultos, un período de aprendizaje y discernimiento para las personas que han declarado su deseo de convertirse en Católicos. La clave para la observancia fructífera de estas prácticas es reconocer su vínculo con la renovación bautismal. Estamos llamados no solo a abstenernos del pecado durante la Cuaresma, sino a la verdadera conversión de nuestros corazones y mentes como seguidores de Cristo.
