PALM SUNDAY

MARCH 25, 2018

First Reading: Isaiah 50:4-7 Isaiah describes the pain and insults of the Servant of God. Yet he sounds hopeful when describing God as his help, knowing he will not be disgraced. Second Reading: Philippians 2:6-11 Paul exults Christ’s great sacrifice of humbling himself to become human and die on the cross. He explains that this is why we should now realize the importance of honoring both his name and memory. Gospel: Mark 14:1—15:47 Mark describes the events leading up to Christ’s crucifixion. The Last Supper is described, explaining where the Eucharist began. Judas betrays Jesus and his suffering at the hands of the Sanhedrin (Council) is detailed

PALM SUNDAY MESSAGE FROM MONSIGNOR NEVIN

“If anyone should say to you, “Why are you doing this? reply, ‘The Master has need of it …’ ….Rather He emptied Himself, taking the form of a slave, coming in human likeness, and found human in appearance, He humbled himself, becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.” The Church has named this Holy Week. It is holy because of what we pause to recall, the unfolding of God’s plan for our salvation. The whole purpose of Holy week, therefore, is the remembrance of Christ’s passion and death which led up to the glory of His Resurrection. For Catholics, this is, indeed, the most holy as well as unique week of the entire church year. It begins with the gracious invitation to re-enter the Holy City with Jesus and share in the Pascal Mystery of His suffering, dying and rising from the dead. To accomplish this end, Jesus instructs all “the Master has need of it.” As we hold the blessed palm branch, may we see it as our ticket or pass to enter all the events, which Jesus experienced, and which we will remember and celebrate this week. This week is holy, because we will respond through our prayers, fast and abstinence and our participation, in the ritual of walking with Jesus, dining with Him at the supper, and being with Him on Calvary and, later on, in the quiet of His tomb. Each event, every moment is directed by the Lord at the will of His Father. The chalice will not pass Him by. He will indeed drink of it. He requires us to respond to His saving actions and not simply remember. We are not to be detached observers….we are to try our best to be caught up into the joy and rapture of the Sacred Mysteries, which bring us ever closer to salvation. As we now begin this holy week, let us commit ourselves to do our best to immerse ourselves in the Triduum for two reasons. “The Master has need of it,” and because we have need of Him. The sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist and the institution of the holy priesthood, all have a special significance for us this Holy Week. We ask all to join in prayer for the church and for our parish. “The Master has need of you.”

“He humbled himself, becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.”

+ SOLEMN STATIONS OF THE CROSS + GOOD FRIDAY EVENING 7:30 PM

Via Delorosa – Way of Sorrows On this most solemn night which we Christians dare to call “Good Friday” we are privileged to be captured up into Christ’s painful journey along the road to Calvary. We will, in mind and spirit, stand at the foot of the cross with Mary his mother, John his beloved disciple and the crowds which gathered to witness this public spectacle just before Passover. We will, together, meditate on the humiliation of Christ, the Suffering Servant and His terrible crucifixion and death which brought about the forgiveness of sin for all people for all time. Come and join us here in our parish church as we pray and meditate on the Stations of the Cross and conclude our evening by meditating on the Five Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary this final time before Easter. Yes, there are many activities on Good Friday…the Fast and Abstinence - the Living Stations of the Cross at noon - the Passion at 3 and the Solemn Stations at 7:30. It can be a real drain. We can become hungry, thirsty, tired and a bit achy by all of this. So….can we even begin to imagine how Christ felt at the end of His day, His last day? This Good Friday, let’s do all we can….for love of Him. We adore You O Christ and we praise you because by Your holy cross You have redeemed the world. _____________________________________________

PARISH EASTER EGG HUNT Immediately following our 10:00 a.m. FAMILY MASS in

the gym (and weather permitting), we will hold an Easter Egg Hunt for our younger children. There will be one location for the younger age group (1-5) and another for the older elementary age group. Let’s all hope for fair

weather. _____________________________________________

LAST CHANCE! ANNUAL MASS OF CHRISM

SAINT PATRICK’S CATHEDRAL TUESDAY, MARCH 27TH – 4 PM

COUNTY-WIDE COACH BUS RIDE The faithful of our Rockland parishes are urged to make attendance at this very beautiful and unique Mass of Chrism (reserved seating) a special part of their Lenten observance. Four your convenience, the Rockland Deanery is, once again, sponsoring a comfortable coach bus which will be departing from the St. Francis of Assisi parking lot, Parrott Road, West Nyack, at 1 p.m. This special Mass, a tradition which goes back all the way to the 5th century of our church, is only celebrated once a year by our Cardinal Archbishop, Timothy Michael Dolan, who will be joined by his Auxiliary Bishops, Deans and hundreds of our parish and religious order priests and deacons.

During the Mass, the Archbishop will also bless three sacred oils, Oil of the Catechumens, Oil of the Sick and Holy Chrism. These oils will be used in the administration of the sacraments throughout the entire Archdiocese during the upcoming year. Please contact the Deanery Office (St. Aedan’s) at 845-735-7405 for further information. You may confirm your bus reservation (first come first served basis) by dropping off your non-refundable $20.00 check a.s.a.p. The check is payable to Saint Aedan Church, 23 Reld Drive, Pearl River, NY 10964. _____________________________________________

URGENT - RIGHT TO LIFE ALERT

In his recent Budget proposal, Governor Cuomo included a radical bill (S.7511) that would expand late-term abortions in New York State. The bill would eliminate New York's ban on late-term abortions allowing abortion for any reason in all nine months of pregnancy, empower non-doctors to perform abortions, and permit a baby born alive after an abortion to die of neglect and starvation. The enacted state budget requires three-way negotiation and must be finalized by April 1. The State Senate is our only hope to stop this tragedy. Please let your State Senator know that they must not allow the state budget to be used as a vehicle for expanding late-term abortion. For ease of communication in contacting your Senator, go to www.nyscatholic.org and click on "Take Action", which will provide a message you can send directly to your Senator. If you prefer to call Rep. Senator John Flanagan (Majority Leader), who will be part of the three-way negotiation, he can be reached at (631) 361-2154, and say: "I am calling because Governor Cuomo included a radical abortion expansion proposal (S.7511) in his budget bills. This proposal would eliminate virtually all limitations on abortion in New York State, particularly on late-term abortions. Please insist that these abortion provisions are removed from the final budget."

SACRAMENT OF THE ANOINTING

The Sacrament of the Anointing is for those who are on hospice care or who are seriously ill or have chronic ailments or health conditions or are facing upcoming major surgery and all those of advanced age. Please be sure to contact us as soon as possible so that we are able to visit and provide this beautiful sign of to the person in need of God’s love and healing presence. Please do not put it off. Please call the Parish Office at 845-735-7405.
