First Reading: Sirach 27:4-7 This reading explains that quality and truth in conversation is a test for humankind. Only after listening to a person's reasoning can we know the mind of another.

Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 15:54-58 Paul speaks of the mystery of transformation that is victory over death when our mortality puts on immortality. We are encouraged by Paul to be steadfast and immovable, filling our lives with the work of the Lord.

Gospel: Luke 6:39-45 Today, Jesus teaches through the use of parables, first encouraging us to be like the teacher, understand that the blind cannot lead the blind. Jesus also reminds us that only the heart's good treasure produces good. In order to remain steadfast, we must heed what Jesus tells us. LENTEN REGULATIONS FOR CATHOLICS Time for us to prayerfully consider our

spiritual preparations for the season of Lent which begins this week.

ASH WEDNESDAY, MARCH 6TH

ABSTINENCE forbids the eating of meat. Abstinence obliges from the 14th birthday throughout one’s life. All Fridays of Lent are days

of abstinence from meat. FASTING prescribes that only one full meal a day be taken. Two smaller meals may be taken to maintain strength but these taken together should not equal another full meal. Fasting obliges from the 18th to the 59th birthday. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are the two days of Fast AND Abstinence from meat. There is a serious obligation for Catholics to observe these penitential practices in a substantial way. Those whose work or health would be impaired are excused from fast and abstinence. Individual conscience should decide proper cause for excuse. Lent, in a very special way, points out that we are pilgrims on a lifelong journey of faith. For seven weeks we walk with Christ, in response to His invitation, “Let us go up to Jerusalem”. The penances, the fasting, and all the other aspects of Lent are the hardships of the journey.

PASTA WITH THE PARISH NIGHTS ALL FRIDAY EVENINGS DURING LENT

PLEASE JOIN US! CATCH OF THE DAY WILL ALSO BE

AVAILABLE FOR THOSE WHO WANT IT. In order to help keep the cost of this event affordable for everyone, we will be asking the same amount we do for our monthly pancake breakfasts - $3.00 seniors, $5.00 singles and just $10.00 for a family with young children. (Add the delicious catch of the day dish for a small additional charge.) Following dinner, please join us over in the church for our Stations of the Cross beginning at 7:30 p.m. So, please allow us to care for both “body and soul” this Lent by participating in this parish family meal followed by the Stations of the Cross. It would help if you RSVP to our parish office 735-7405 So, beginning with the Friday evening following Ash Wednesday, MARCH 8TH, you are invited to come out and join with your fellow parishioners to share in a delicious meatless pasta dinner served right here in our gym. The dinners, served from 6:00 – 7:15 p.m., will feature salad, meatless pasta, rolls & butter, soft drink, coffee/tea and dessert.

OUR 40 DAY LENTEN JOURNEY Our personal Lenten journey should include increased effort at prayer, penance, self-denial and almsgiving and, of course, charity/alms giving. As scripture reminds us, one day we must all give a personal accounting for our lives. “And the King will sit upon His royal throne and He will separate everyone into two groups, the sheep and the goats. The sheep he will place at His right and say, come, inherit the kingdom which I have prepared for you. When I was hungry, you gave me food; thirsty and you gave me drink; naked and you clothed me; sick or imprisoned and you cared for me for whatsoever you did for one of my least ones, that you did unto me. These will go off to eternal life.

2019 CARDINAL’S STEWARDSHIP CAMPAIGN UPDATE

This year’s Cardinal’s Stewardship Appeal has been underway for the past few weeks. By now, every registered parishioner should have received a letter in the mail emphasizing the importance of making a sacrificial gift to this vital campaign which supports the: *dignified retirement of our elderly priests *faith formation of our public and Catholic school children *seminary training of our future priests and deacons *needs of the poor and helpless of our Archdiocese. *ongoing administrative needs of our church of New York This year’s parish goal is $97,000.00 and to date, we have received pledges in the amount of $17,436.00 from 69 individuals or households. This represents 18% of our goal. If you have not received a solicitation letter in the mail, please contact the parish office to verify the information we have in our parishioner database. Pledge envelopes are also available on your way out of mass.
