TWENTY - SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
SEPTEMBER 3, 2017
First Reading: Jeremiah 20:7-9 In this particularly poetic passage, Jeremiah complains that while teaching the Lord’s word, he is subjected to insults and derision. He determines to remain silent, but he cannot because the desire to speak the Lord’s name is “like a fire burning in my heart.”
Second Reading: Romans 12:1-2 Paul tells the Christians to make sacrifices to avoid the trappings of the times, and to do God’s will.
Gospel: Matthew 16:21-27 Jesus tries to make his disciples realize that by following him, they will endure suffering, degradation, and death. He tells them that they must deny themselves and take up the cross in order to be his disciples.

Labor Day Holiday HAVE A GREAT HOLIDAY!
_____________________________________________
FAREWELL FROM FATHER JOHN Hello everyone! I want to tell you how much I enjoyed my two years here at St. Aedan. It has been an extraordinary, wonderful and Spirit-filled time together. Although I leave with sadness, I'm also hopeful for the future under our excellent pastor Msgr. Nevin. I'm certain that he will find an excellent priest to replace me. All I ask is that you pray for me as I journey to Duchess County for my new assignment as the administrator St. John the Evangelist and St. Charles Borromeo parishes. As a "two-for-one" it will have challenges and difficulties, but it will also be a new beginning and a chance to open my heart to new people, ideas, and the heart of Jesus working with me. Please know two things: 1) I will pray for you ALWAYS; and 2) I will love you ALWAYS!
Blessings and prayers, your friend and brother, Fr. John F. X. Palatucci

LABOR DAY - AN AMERICAN HOLIDAY Labor Day is a United States federal holiday which is observed on the first Monday in September. This year it happens to fall on September 5th. The first Labor Day was observed on August 26, 1878, in Boston, by the Central Labor Union of New York, the nation’s first integrated major trade union. It became a federal holiday in 1894, when, following the deaths of a number of workers at the hands of the U.S. military and U.S. Marshalls during the Pullman Strike, President Grover Cleveland put reconciliation with the labor movement as a top political priority. By unanimous vote, Congress passed a law making the day a national holiday some six days after the workers’ deaths. Traditionally, Labor Day is celebrated by most Americans as the symbolic end of summer. In the bygone years of high society, Labor Day was considered the last day of the year when it was fashionable for women to wear white. The day is often regarded as a day of rest and barbeques and parties. In U. S. sports, Labor Day marks the beginning of the NFL and college football seasons. For many school age boys and girls, Labor Day also marks the “last day of freedom” before returning to school. (Source: Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) _____________________________________________

ROCKLAND 9-11 MEMORIAL MASS SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 10TH AT 7 PM
We invite everyone to please save the date for this year’s Rockland County 9-11 Memorial Mass. Because this special mass is traditionally hosted by the Dean, this year it will, once again, be held right here at Saint Aedan’s Church. During the mass, we will pray aloud for all of our Rockland family members and friends who perished during the Attack on America, September 11, 2001. We will also pray for God’s continued love and protection upon all those they left behind on that terrible day. Uniformed responders, both retired and still on the job, are invited to attend in uniform. Others may wish to wear shirts appropriate to one of the uniformed services. Following the mass, refreshments will be served in the parish hall. We welcome your help in providing for the hospitality table following the mass. _____________________________________________
RENEW AND REBUILD CAMPAIGN We will soon be concluding our parish Renew & Rebuild Campaign. We are very grateful to all of you who have stepped up to support our parish campaign by sending in your gifts and pledges. Because of your goodness, we should be in a good position to move forward with our capital projects, beginning with a new Air Conditioning and Heating system If you have not yet gotten around to sending us your gift or pledge, and would still like to support your parish campaign, we ask that you please send in your gift or pledge this week. You may mail it in or else drop it into the basket at Sunday mass.
Your financial sacrifices are greatly appreciated by me, your pastor and your entire parish family will benefit greatly through your generous gifts and the ongoing redemption of your long term pledges Prayerfully in Christ, Msgr. Emmet Nevin _____________________________________________ THE RELIGIOUS EDUCATION OFFICE WILL BE CLOSED UNTIL SEPTEMPER 5TH. Classes for the 2017-2018 year for grades 1-8 will begin the week of 9/11. CANCER SUPPORT GROUP HERE AT ST. AEDAN’S
Unlike other groups, our parish group will be open to anyone affected by this disease, including family members and friends. Thank you for your interest and God Bless You! We at St. Aedan’s have formed a cancer support group which is known as “Our Lady Queen of Peace Cancer Support Group.” At present, the group will meet once a month. More frequent meetings may be scheduled in the future if the members determine it would be desirable. The group will meet on the second Tuesday of each month. The meetings will start in September and the first one will be on September 12th at 7:00P.M. in the meeting room. Anyone who is interested in joining this group, here at
St. Aedan’s, is asked to contact Margie at 845-323-9665.
BLUE MASS AT SAINT AEDAN’S SUNDAY, OCTOBER 1ST – 2 PM
A Blue Mass is a Mass celebrated for those employed in the “public safety field” (i.e. police officers, firefighters, correctional officers, 911 operators and EMS personnel. The color blue refers to the blue-colored uniforms predominantly used by these services. Similar to the Red Mass, the service honors those who have died in the line of duty and those currently serving as first responders. The Mass is an opportunity for the entire community to show gratitude to first responders and their families. All responders, active and retired, are asked to wear their dress uniforms or other apparel identifying their service.

The world was a playground for Mickey, a naive Irish American kid bored with his life. His father served in World War II, his brother was a Marine in Vietnam; now it was his turn. His 365 days in Vietnam builds in torment until an attack on a bunker complex in Cambodia. Wounded, his friend captured, he becomes a tormented survivor knowing he is always just a heartbeat from death.
In this memoir, set as deeply in his mind as in the Southeast Asian jungle, a young American soldier embarks
on a journey to a war that, for him, will never be over.
