THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD The Conclusion of our Christmas Season
January 10, 2016
First Reading: Isaiah 42:1-4, 6-7
Isaiah tells of the Lord’s Servant, who will be inconspicuous, but will not rest until justice is
established. The Lord then tells his servant that he was formed to be “a light for the nations.”
Second Reading: Acts 10:34-38
Peter speaks to a group of pagans for the first time. He explains to them that any person who follows God’s will is acceptable to God, regardless of nationality.
Gospel: Luke 3:15-16, 21-22
John the Baptist had claimed one would come far more powerful than himself, one who would baptize with the
Holy Spirit rather than water. When Jesus came to John and was baptized, the Spirit descended on him
and a voice said, “You are my beloved Son. On you my favor rests.”

50TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION SAINT AEDAN PARISH SUNDAY, JANUARY 31ST – 12 PM MASS This will be an exciting year here at Saint Aedan’s. Our parish will be celebrating its 50th anniversary and our anniversary committee is hard at work planning a calendar of special events which will be announced in the very near future. The opening event of our anniversary year will be a special 50th Anniversary Mass on Sunday, January 31st. Our Principal Celebrant will be the Most Reverend Bishop Dominick Lagonegro, Episcopal Vicar of Rockland and Orange counties. WHO IS SAINT AEDAN? Saint Aedan is also known as Saint Maedoc (6th & 7th century), also known as Mogue and Aidan (Irish: Aedan). He was an Irish saint, founder and first bishop of Ferns in County Wexford and a patron of other churches, such as Rossinver in County Leitrim and Drumalane in County Cavan.Aedan is a diminutive form of the Celtic name Aodh, Aedh, or Aed, originally Oed in Old Irish. The name meant “fire” and is related to the god of the underworld in Irish mythology. Madoc and Mogue are other pet forms of Aodh, meaning something like “my dear little Aedh”. Aedan was born in Inisbrefny (an Island in Templeport Lake) County Cavan, about 558. Irish sources make him a son of Sedan, a chieftain of Connaught, and his wife, Eithne. A close look at the statue of Saint Aedan over our church doorway shows him holding a bell in his hand. Irish legend says that the “Bell of St. Mogue” was given to the infant on his birth by St. Kilian, who was also credited with his baptism. When a youth, Aedan was a hostage of Ainmuire mas Setnai of the Cenel Conaill, High King of Ireland. Ainmire was so impressed with Aedan that he told him he could stay or go. Aedan said he would go but only if the other hostages were released, whereupon Ainmire let them all return home. He studied at the great school of Saint Finnian at Clonard Abby. While at Clonard, Aedan made friends with Molaise, who would later found the monastery of Devenish Island on the River Erne. He spent some time in Wales studying under Saint David. He returned to Ireland in 570 landing on the coast of Wexford with hives of bees, which had been scarce on the island. He is credited with helping King Brandubh win a victory over his enemies and consequently was granted land in Ferns which he used to start up a monastery. When it was agreed in a synod that Ferns be made a diocese, Aedan was ordained its first bishop in 598. He is credited with having evangelized many people and having established thirty churches in County Wexford. Many miracles are attributed to him including walking on water, changing leaves into loaves of fish and bringing a dead girl back to life. His staff is kept in the
National Museum in Dublin, other relics with satchel are in the Armagh Cathedral. Aedan died on January 31st 632 on Lough Melvin’s shore in County Leitrim. His relics are claimed by St. Aedan’s in Ferns. His stone tomb is inside the cathedral, although his remains are under it, in the original cathedral crypt below. SWAZI LEGACY SUPPORTS ORPHANED CHILDREN IN AFRICA
Swazi Legacy Inc, is a NYS not-for-profit corporation and a recognized 501 ©(3) tax-exempt charity organization dedicated to assisting in the support, care and education of marginalized and orphaned children in Swaziland, Africa. Swazi Legacy was created to preserve the legacy of Father Pat Ahern, a missionary Catholic priest who devoted his adult life to helping orphaned children in Swaziland. Father Pat served as a priest, teacher, mentor and friend to every orphaned child while continuously working to raise funds to provide these children of Swaziland with a safe place to live and learn. A native of Ireland, Father Ahern lived in Swaziland for 49 years until his death in January 2009. Virtually all funds contributed to Swazi Legacy are delivered to Manzini Youth Care in Manzini, Swaziland for direct and immediate use in the care and upbringing of Our Children, the orphaned children of Swaziland. With the help of Father Larry McDonnell and the Salesians of Don Bosco, Swazi Legacy completely avoids all bureaucracy, taxes, fees and corruption – every donated dollar reaches Swaziland for the benefit of OUR children. Next weekend we will be outside of church and asking for your help to help the children of Swaziland. Every dollar you donate benefits these children. Thanking you in advance and may God Bless you for your generosity.

FEEDING OUR NEIGHBORS DRIVE
Sunday, January 24th – Sunday, January 31st Timothy Cardinal Dolan is calling on all Catholics to Feed Our Neighbors in New York and respond to the overwhelming need we are facing right here in our local community. During this special week, in January, every Catholic individual and household in our parish and throughout the Archdiocese is invited to join with their friends and neighbors in helping to feed the hungry of our local town as well as Rockland County communities. How can you do this? FEED THE BIG WHITE BOX. Bring non-perishable foods to our Feeding Our Neighbors COLLECTION BOX which will located in our church lobby. Next week’s bulletin will provide a list of appropriate food items. Supporting those who are in need comes rather naturally to us, here at Saint Aedan’s, because we, as a parish family, sponsor a year-round food pantry. We realize that people need to eat every day, every week, every month of the year. Your donations of food will help provide for the needy individuals and families we support here at our local parish as well as the CSSSR food pantry located in North Rockland. Both pantries will share in the food donations you bring here to church. The children in our Parish Religious Education Program (PREP) will also be involved in this Archdiocesan-wide effort. Christ reminds all of us, young and old, to respond to his message of “When you fed or clothed my needy brothers and sisters, that you did unto me.”

The world was a playground for Mickey, a naive Irish American kid bored with his life. His father served in World War II, his brother was a Marine in Vietnam; now it was his turn. His 365 days in Vietnam builds in torment until an attack on a bunker complex in Cambodia. Wounded, his friend captured, he becomes a tormented survivor knowing he is always just a heartbeat from death.
In this memoir, set as deeply in his mind as in the Southeast Asian jungle, a young American soldier embarks
on a journey to a war that, for him, will never be over.
