Este fin de semana, aquí en los Estados Unidos, estamos celebrando y recordando a todas esas mujeres y hombres norteamericanos que han muerto en el servicio militar a lo largo de nuestra histo-ria. El lunes es el Día de los Caídos (Memorial Day). Es importante que recordemos y agradezcamos a todos los veteranos por su servicio a nuestro país. Recuerdo haber marchado en muchos desfiles del Día de los Caídos cuando era niño. Mi papá era un veterano orgulloso. Sirvió en la División 82 Aero-transportada durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Se lanzó en paracaídas el D-Day y Nijmegen y par-ticipó en la Batalla de las Ardenas, por nombrar algunos. Nos contó muchas historias sobre la guerra y perteneció a muchas organizaciones de veteranos.

Desafortunadamente, hemos estado envueltos en tantas guerras y tantos han muerto defendien-do y protegiendo la vida. Tendemos a olvidar esto. Todos dieron su vida para que otros pudieran vi-vir libremente. Dieron todo lo que tenían para que nosotros pudiéramos tener más. Entonces, mien-tras celebramos este fin de semana con hot dogs, hamburguesas, cerdo desmenuzado y todo lo que hace que el Día de los Caídos sea tan especial, no olvidemos a quienes sirvieron y murieron por nues-tra libertad.

Este fin de semana también celebramos el Domingo de la Trinidad. Creemos en la Santísima Trinidad porque Dios se reveló a nosotros como tres personas distintas: el Padre, el Hijo y el Espíritu Santo. Este es el misterio que celebramos hoy. Pero, ¿qué significa este misterio para nosotros? ¿Qué es tan importante acerca de nuestra creencia en la Trinidad?

Para mí, la importancia de la Santísima Trinidad es que sirve como un recordatorio continuo para cada uno de nosotros de que no estamos abandonados. ¡Dios estuvo, está y siempre estará con nosotros! En el Antiguo Testamento leemos cómo Dios permaneció fiel a los israelitas a pesar de que a veces fueron infieles. En el Nuevo Testamento, leemos cómo Jesús, el Hijo de Dios, ganó la salva-ción para nosotros en la Cruz. La semana pasada celebramos la fiesta de Pentecostés y recordamos una vez más que Dios envió a su Espíritu Santo para estar con nosotros y para guiarnos.

Entonces, se nos recuerda que Dios siempre está con nosotros. Esta fiesta de la Santísima Tri-nidad es una prueba para de que Dios está cerca de nosotros. El dogma de la Santísima Trinidad nos recuerda que cuando nos enfrentamos a tiempos difíciles, cuando las cosas no son difíciles para noso-tros, no estamos abandonados.

Como cristianos, debemos ver y aceptar la cercanía de Dios y no solo ver a Dios como alguien que nos cuida desde arriba. Dios es inmanente y trascendente. Si no sentimos la presencia de Dios en nuestras vidas, entonces no estamos respondiendo a un Dios que siempre está con nosotros.

El próximo martes nuestros candidatos para la Confirmación serán confirmados por el Obispo Peter Byrne a las 7 pm de la noche. Se han estado preparando para este día durante dos años. Ora-mos para que sigan creciendo en fe. Debido a las limitaciones de espacio solo los candidatos, sus pa-drinos y familiares directos pueden asistir.

El próximo fin de semana en todas las misas tendremos una segunda colecta para apoyar las misiones carmelitas. Como muchos de ustedes saben, esta colecta se realiza cada año (excepto el año pasado cuando cerramos) y usualmente tenemos un Carmelita que viene y habla sobre las misiones Carmelitas. Sin embargo, debido a las restricciones de viaje en muchos países, no podemos traer a algunos de nuestros misioneros que normalmente hablan en las misas. Cuando era provincial, no solo pude visitar nuestra misión en Trinidad y Vietnam muchas veces, también vi de primera mano mu-chas de las otras misiones de la Orden. Sé que nuestro apoyo financiero es necesario para mantener la actividad misionera de la Orden en Asia, África y muchas partes de América Central y del Sur. Venga preparado la semana que viene para apoyar las misiones carmelitas.

Como recordatorio, después de este fin de semana volveremos a nuestro horario de misas pre-Covid y no tendremos la misa del domingo a las 6 pm por la noche. Esto se volverá a evaluar en el otoño. ¡Que tengas un maravilloso fin de semana del Día de los Caídos!

This weekend, here in the United States, we are celebrating and remembering all those Ameri-can women and men who have died in military service throughout our history. Monday is Memorial Day. It is important that we remember and thank all veterans for their service to our country. I re-member marching in many Memorial Day parades as a kid. My dad was a proud veteran. He served in the 82nd Airborne Division during World War II. He parachuted on D-Day and Nijmegen and participated in the Battle of the Bulge to name a few. He told us many stories about the war and be-longed to many veterans’ organizations. When I turned 18 I did not even have to register for the draft. It had stopped a few years before. Our country was a peace thanks to the sacrifices of so many who gave their lives.

Unfortunately we have been involved in so many wars and so many have died defending and protecting life. We tend to forget this. They all gave their lives so that others might live freely. They gave all they had so that we, the living, might have more. So, as we celebrate this weekend with hot dogs, hamburgers, pulled pork and all that makes Memorial Day so special, let us not forget those who served and died for our freedom.

This weekend we also celebrate Trinity Sunday. We believe in the Holy Trinity because God reveled himself to us as three distinct persons - the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. This is the mystery we celebrate today. But, what does this mystery mean for us today? What is so important about our belief in the Trinity?

For me the importance of the Holy Trinity is that it serves as a continual reminder to each of us that we are not abandoned! God was, is and always will be with us! In the Old Testament we read how God remained faithful to the Israelites in spite of the fact that they were unfaithful at times. In the New Testament, we read how Jesus, the Son of God, won salvation for us on the Cross. Last week we celebrated the feast of Pentecost and were reminded once again that God sent His Holy Spir-it to be with us, to guide us, today.

So, we are reminded that God is always with us. This feast of the Holy Trinity is proof to us that God is close to us. The dogma of the Holy Trinity reminds us that when we face challenging time, when things are difficult for us, we are not abandoned.

As Christians, we must see and accept the closeness of God and not just see God as someone watching over us from above. God is both immanent and transcendent. If we do not feel the presence of God in our lives, then we are not responding to a God who is always with us.

This coming Tuesday our candidates for Confirmation will be confirmed by Bishop Peter Byr-ne at 7pm in the evening. They have been preparing for this day for two years. We pray that they may continue to grow in faith. Because of the space limitations we have to follow only the candi-dates, their sponsors and immediate family can attend.

Next weekend at all the masses we will have a second collection to support the Carmelite mis-sions. As many of you know, this collection is taken up each year (except last year when we were shut down) and we usually have a Carmelite come and speak on the Carmelite missions. However, because of the travel restrictions in many countries, we are not able to bring over some of our mis-sionaries who normally speak at the masses. When I was provincial I not only got to visit our mis-sion in Trinidad and Vietnam many times, I also saw firsthand many of the other missions of the Or-der. I do know that our financial support is need to keep the missionary activity of the Order going in Asia, Africa and many parts of Central and South America. Please come prepared next week to sup-port the Carmelite missions.

As a reminder, after this weekend we will go back to our pre-pandemic mass schedule and we will not be having the 6pm Sunday mass in the evening. This will be revaluated in the Fall. Have a wonderful Memorial Day weekend!
