April 1, 2018 Easter Sunday ~ The Resurrection of the Lord 6

Dear Friends,

“Christ is risen from the dead, trampling down death by death;

and giving life to those in the tomb!”

These ancient words proclaim to me and you the meaning of

today’s greatest of all feasts.

This is the great truth which fills our faith with meaning.

Jesus, Who died on the cross, has risen. He has triumphed over death; He has overcome

sorrow, anguish and the power of darkness … In Him we find everything. Outside of Him

our life is empty. St. Josemaria Escriva, Christ is Passing By

These words from a twentieth century saint are true for all, whether or not they know it.

For this pastor, it is a deep joy, tinged with a sense of prayerful solicitude, to see so many

new and unfamiliar faces at the Masses of Easter Day.

A joy in that the story of Easter still has the power to draw so many souls to worship Him

amidst His People. A sense of concern, in that they are also already baptized; and yet, so many

seem to live so much of their lives rarely encountering Him where He is most clearly found: in

His Word and Sacraments.

Yet, for me, the joy overwhelms the worry; and I remember the words of a priest written

years ago: Remember! Every face you see is the face of a soul in whom Christ either dwells,

or wishes to dwell!

Christ and His Resurrection lie at the center of all human history. He is the universal

Savior, not just of Catholics and other Christians, but of the entire world and its people.

Let us rejoice in this Feast and be peaceful in the knowledge of His love and grace.

God’s blessings!

Fr. Hewes

A Note About Conversion And Reception Into The Catholic Church

In recent years, this process has been under the designation of the Rite of the Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA)

with its various rites, stages, and ceremonies. It is a fact in this parish, the number of people actively involved in

carrying out the RCIA program has diminished and the lifestyles and schedules of those inquiring about becoming

Catholics has changed. This necessitates a reform in the way this program is ministered in the parish.

The very first step for anyone, of whatever nature of interest in either becoming a Catholic or an already bap-

tized adult interested in completing their Sacraments in the Catholic Church, is a phone call to either Father Sikorski

or me to set up an interview, for an introduction and discussion of your interest and/or needs in this area. This will

enable us to get to know you, your circumstances and to determine an appropriate length and nature of your instruc-

tions in the Catholic Faith. These can vary in depth and length, according to each individual’s circumstances and

schedules. The priest will then be able to arrange the appropriate stages and ceremonies for the potential convert.

It has always been a hallmark of conversion to the Catholic Faith that they meet, and develop a relationship

with his or her pastor and parish priests.

I am very grateful to Mrs. Marie Prainito and Mr. Robert Ruvio, who have borne the responsibility for this

important work for many years. The work of introducing adults to the Catholic Faith or completing others’ initiation

into the life of the Church continues and will benefit from this reform and renewal.

April 1, 2018 Easter Sunday ~ The Resurrection of the Lord 10

Easter comes early this year, April 1st

One of my many nephews was born on this day which is known as April Fool’s Day. He is anything but a fool. I was so blessed to see him the day he was born, when this new life delighted our family. Easter is a time of new life, when we cele-brate the Resurrection of Jesus. When Jesus appeared to His disciples, who were together in a locked room after the darkest days of His passion, crucifixion and death, He greeted them by saying, “Peace be with you.” In addition, to their being fearful, confused and de-spairing, they were probably feeling some guilt for having abandoned Him. Hence, they might have expected some rebuke from Him. Instead, Jesus greets them with, “Peace be with you.” How forgiving, loving, liberating and startling such a greeting must have been to them! He didn’t act bitterly about the recent past nor did He make any sarcastic comments to them. He never mentioned that they were fair-weather friends who abandoned Him. They were starting anew with Him. With the celebration of Easter and the help of the Holy Spirit, we too are starting anew. Jesus is saying to us, “Peace,” the peace that only He can give. Thank you for bringing some peace and reducing the anxiety of some of our troubled and poor families. Let us pray for them and for one another that we will try to be instruments of Christ’s love and peace. Happy Easter and peace to you and your families. Sister Kay McCarthy

WELCOME BISHOP JOHN BARRES, AUXILIARY BISHOPS, VICARS AND MEMBERS OF THE DIOCESCAN

PASTORAL COUNCIL

We are very pleased and honored to warmly welcome Bishop John Barres, the Auxiliary Bishops, Vicars and members of the Diocesan Pastoral Council. Bishop John Barres will be the Celebrant at the 9 AM Mass on Saturday, April 21st. I expect that the Auxiliary Bishops and Father Hewes will concele-brate the Mass. Although Bishop Barres has celebrated a Mass at Saint Matthew’s for the Religious Education Directors in our Diocese, this is the first time that he will be celebrating a Parish Mass. We hope that many of you will be available to pray with us that morning and will be able to attend this Mass. After the Mass, the Bishop will attend a meeting here with the Diocesan Pastoral Council.

Thank you and God bless you. Sister Kay McCarthy

This month our guest speaker is Lorraine Yovino, a member of the Board of Directors of Catholics for Freedom of Religion. We will be dis-cussing important topics relating to the world we live in. Lorraine is also the Editor of the items in our weekly bulletin on Religious Freedom. I would like to thank everyone who helped make our St. Patrick/St. Joseph Dinner Dance a success. We all enjoyed a wonderful evening. Thank you! Our biggest fundraiser of the year is our Fashion Show on Wednesday, April 25th, 2018 at the Crest Hollow Country Club. Tickets are $60 and may be purchased by calling Peggy at 631-499-5786 or Mary at 631-499-7820. Tickets and raffles can also be purchased at our meeting and after masses (please see dates below). During the Fashion Show, besides the Chi-nese Auction, we will also have a Lotto Board Drawing, Chance Book Drawing and a 50/50 Raffle. YES ~ SENIOR NEWS REMINDERS ~ UPCOMING EVENTS I am planning a trip to Sight and Sound in Lancaster, Pa. We have been there several times and the experience is just beautiful. I cannot find the correct adjective to describe it, but those of you who have been there before know what I mean and those who haven’t, be prepared to be amazed. It is planned for June 12 or 13, depending on the best seats available. The cost is $120. per person and includes dinner at the Amish restaurant, Shady Maple, as well as all tips and taxes. We are purchasing tickets to a show and must place orders as soon as possible, in order to get the best available seats. I must have a minimum of 40 people to commit to this trip, to make this happen. Please call me at 631 667-7922, if you have any questions and to confirm your interest. Once I am sure I have the required number of people to make this trip, I will let you know when the money is due. Do not send any money now but remember, bring a friend, as all are wel-come on our trips. Remember to pray for all those who are ill and for their loving caregivers. Pray also for our country, our President, the Military and for all those who protect us. God bless America. See you in church. Pat

A Special Thank You From The Rosary Altar Society

Our St. Patrick/St. Joseph's Dinner Dance was a wonderful success, but that was only possible with the effort of so many.

First, we thank our Pastor, Father Hewes, for allowing the Rosary Altar Society to host the dance and for his presence there, along with Father Sikorski and Sister Kay. Thank you to Andrea Hui for designing and printing the tickets. As usual they came out beautiful. Thank you to Laurie Mattone for the beautiful centerpieces. Thank you to Judy Archbold, Sharon Fleming, Rosemary Sammon and Adelaide Vierling for making the delicious Irish soda bread. Joan Mackey provided the delicious salad. Thank you to Tina & Joe Murgolo for donating the meatballs, cannolis, butter and cheese. Thank

you to the Knights of Columbus for the beer and for their support. Thank you to Peter Consentino of PJ Venture and Mary DiMatteo for their generous contribution for our dinner dance expenses. Thank you to Louise Benenati and family, Larry, Vincent, Marilou, Bob and Mike, for providing and preparing the corned beef dinner ~ so tender and delicious. The baked ziti was made by our very own Rosarians, Marilou, Carmela, Tina, Kathy and Pat. Our guests thought they were in Little Italy, for sure. Bob, Mike and Stephen, our bartenders, kept the drinks flowing. Thank you to Luis Flores who's always there, for whatever we need, to make it all happen. Denis, DJ for Party Up Entertain-ment, was fantastic and his lively music kept the dance floor hopping. Thank you to all who helped prepare, serve, clean up or helped out in some way. We could not have done it without all of you. And, finally, thank you to those who attended the dinner dance and supported this fundraiser. Your presence made it even more enjoyable. A special highlight of the evening was celebrating Father Hewes’ birthday. Birthday cake and Happy Birthday music and song added to the festivities. Our lucky 50/50 winner was Vinny Costello. Congratulations, Vinny! Please save the date for our next event, the Fashion Show, on April 25th at the Crest Hollow Country Club. We're looking forward to seeing you there.

May Our Lady always be at your side. Terry Sbashnig President

April 1-Easter Sunday

Today, as we celebrate the feast of Easter, we find the challenge of also seeing and believing the resurrection that comes through our own lives of self-sacrifice which brings new life to others. Your gift to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul will show the love of the Risen Christ by bringing your love to those who live in fear and doubt, loneliness and dread.

RESPECT LIFE NEWS Spiritual Adoption Program

MONTHS SEVEN AND EIGHT – Developing Baby

You are in the home stretch with your spiritu-ally adopted baby. He/she is completely formed, and has been since 8 weeks. All he/she is doing now is gaining weight - and

making his/her mother uncomfortable with his/her size. But she is not worried. In a short time, her baby will be born. Your baby’s mother appreciated the prayers you have said for her and her baby throughout the pregnancy. It has not been easy, but your prayers have given her the grace she needed to bring her baby to term.

Focus on Religious Freedom From Catholics for Freedom of Religion www.cffor.org

Freedom of Worship's Assault on "Freedom of Religion": The right to live, work and worship according to one's faith is a freedom foundational to the United States. The Founders were clear, and the Bill of Rights makes it foun-dational to our Constitution, that the government should not infringe on the free ex-ercise of religion

In recent years, however, Americans have faced attempts to water down this robust understand-ing of religious freedom to a mere "freedom to worship." "Freedom of worship" means religious beliefs need to go in the Closet - or into four walls of a home or house of worship - and that faith should remain a private affair that is relegated to personal ac-tivities or weekend worship services. "Freedom of religion" means religious believers can say and do as their conscience dictates in the pub-lic square. It includes freedom of worship but is also the right to evangelize, change their religion, have schools and charitable institutions, and conduct their jobs and businesses according to their conscience and religious beliefs. "The freedom of religion is much more than just the freedom to worship," said Sen. James Lankford. "Worship confines you to location. Freedom of religion is the right to exercise your religious beliefs - it is the ability of Americans to live out their faith or choose to have no faith at all." (firstlings.com; wsj.com, 6/10/16; ncregister.com, 8/18/16)

"Congress shall make no law respecting the establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; ..." First Amendment to the Bill of Rights

Action Steps: 1. Pray that all Americans will cherish our freedoms. 2. Learn all 5 freedoms in the First Amendment. 3. Contact Catholics For Freedom of Religion at 631-896-8331 to arrange a speaker for your parish or ministry group.
