SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT PAGE 3

Straightening out the twisty-turny course of 2020 2020 sure has given us a crooked path this year. How are we to make it straight, as John the Baptist calls us to do in today’s Gospel? I remember driving the Apache Trail for the first time, down from Roosevelt dam. The narrow dirt road twisted and turned as it swerved between dizzying over-hangs and embankments blasted from the cliffs above. A crooked path indeed.

At some point, as we traveled through the treach-erous months of this past year, we needed to stop to get our bearings, to assess what we had been through and to get us ready for what might be up ahead. Before anything, we just needed to calm our nerves, unstick those white knuckles from the steering wheel and begin to breathe more easily.

Advent allows us to do that now. First of all, to calm our spirits. Our first reading is from the beginning of Second Isaiah, the prophet of the Book of Consolation. He repeats, “Comfort, give comfort to my people, says your God.” (Is. 40:1) You can almost hear the gentle tenor sing-ing from Handel’s Messiah oratorio, soothing those rattled nerves: “Comfort ye, comfort ye, my people.”

If we read Isaiah 40 slowly, meditating on the im-ages, we can restore our faith, hope and love during these twisty-turny times. Listen to the next verse, “Speak tender-ly to Jerusalem, and proclaim to her… that her guilt is ex-piated.” (Is. 40:2) The decades-long exile of Jewish lead-ers in Babylon had ended, and the corruption that led to it has been forgiven. Isaiah acknowledged that the people had completed double penance for those sins.

Looking back over 2020, we can recall the times when anxiety over the pandemic has caused us to judge others, or when Covid-fatigue has led us to unsafe practic-es. Or when we might have blurted out political condem-nations against others. Or when we may have neglected the Lives that Matter. The God of consolation is the God of mercy, always ready to forgive and bring us peace. Let us turn to Jesus for forgiveness. This year, instead of gath-ering the parish for a communal Advent penance service, both Father Joseph and Father Charlie will be available all day, morning, afternoon and evening, for Confessions on Wednesday, December 16th. (continued in next column)

Second Sunday of Advent December 6, 2020 Every valley shall be filled in, every mountain and hill shall be made low. — Isaiah 40:4

Volume 352

(continuation) After looking back on this crooked trail of a year,

we can look forward with more confidence. Both Isaiah and the Gospel’s John the Baptist proclaim, “Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths.” (Is. 40:3; Mark 1:3) We do our part by Confession and Penance, but God does the major part of road construction. “Every valley shall be filled in; every mountain and hill shall be made low.” (Is. 40:4)

In the second reading, Peter warns us of construc-tion delays, but urges us to be patient, claiming that “the Lord does not delay his promise,… but he is patient with you, not wishing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.” (2 Pt. 3:9) The Lord gives us hope. “According to his promise we await new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.” (2 Pt. 3:18)

Thus, we can look forward to 2021 with hope. We can hope for a righteous attempt to resolve political divi-sions. We can hope for an equitable distribution of a coro-navirus vaccine. And we can hope for a return to an active and celebratory parish life. So, after pausing for prayer and reflection, let us take the wheel again and drive safely though Advent this year on our way to adore the Child in Bethlehem.

-Deacon Joe

Traditionally, Advent wreaths are con-structed of a circle of evergreen branches into which four candles are inserted, rep-resenting the four weeks of Advent. Ide-ally, three candles are purple, and one is rose, but white candles can also be used.

The progressive lighting of the candles symbolizes the expecta-tion and hope surrounding our Lord’s first coming into the world and the anticipation of his second coming to judge the living and the dead.

Week Two

Two candles are lit on the second Sunday and allowed to burn as before. Leader: Let us pray. O Lord, stir up our hearts that we may prepare for Thy only begotten Son, that through His coming we may be made worthy to serve Thee with pure souls. Through the same Christ our Lord. All: Amen

Él repite: "Consuelen, consuelen a mi pueblo, dice nuestro Dios".
