New Three Year Sponsorship for Romiley Golf Club AM-AM
The end of December brought to an end the four year period during which
Leama Specialist Cars Ltd has been the main sponsor of the AM-AM. Apart
from its valuable sponsorship each year, Leama also supplied countless bottles
of champagne for minor prizes as well as all the “goody bags” handed out to
every individual AM-AM, plus a healthy supply of score cards for all our Club
competitions.
From our standpoint Leama could not have been a more generous and helpful
sponsor. It has been a pleasure to work with them in producing what were very
successful AM-AM competitions for Romiley Golf Club. We would like to thank
them for their support. We wish them well for the future and hope to see them
back at the Club very soon.
I am sure you will all want to join me and the AM-AM committee in wishing
Gary well, not only in his year as Captain, but, over the next three years of
Mercury’s sponsorship and association with the AM-AM. The Club is
particularly pleased to be sponsored by a local business found right in the
centre of the village.
The AM-AM Committee and the Club are very much
looking forward to working with Gary, his business
partner, Phil Gammond, and their team at Mercury in
producing a fantastic day and a quality competition
which will be both successful and enjoyable for all
parties involved.

We are delighted to announce that the

AM sponsor for the next three years.
Mercury Financial Management Ltd

some time now through sponsorship of
the eighth tee in addition to entering

year. Some members will recognise that
one of the directors of Mercury is Gary
Williams, our current gentlemen’s Vice
Captain.

Ladies’ Winter Dinner, 28th January, 2016
The Texas Scramble competition in the morning was played in brilliant sunshine so the
ladies were happy. Four teams ended with 43 gross and even third place was a CPO,
both teams on 5.25. Beryl Reade, Diane Houghton and Sandra Hewitt just missed out.
The evening presentation carvery dinner
went down well, as did the speaker, Jane
Antrobus, a regular visitor to Romiley to
play in opens and invitations days (13 hcp),
but this time she was telling the ladies, very
briefly, the story of her rise from a checkout
girl at the Oldham Co-op to the first ever
female Detective Chief Superintendent.
Now retired, Jane has trained as a
celebrant, has been busy with TV interviews
and consultancy work, and is embarking on
a new acting career in a TV crime drama
production—playing a detective inspector.

Malcolm was sent for blood tests which all proved negative for performance
enhancing drugs but showed he might have contracted canine distemper. He sees

Many of the players wanted to call
this format “Russian Roulette”
rather than just “Russian”. Both
players’ stableford scores on a hole
were multiplied to create the score
for the hole. They thought they
had blown it on the 16th and 17th
where they had just one point on
each hole. However, on the 7th
Phil had a 4 for 4 pts and Doug a 4
for 3 pts making 4 x 3 = 12 points.

Ladies’ Mail On Sunday, Fairfield v. Romiley, Sunday, 7th February, 2016
Romiley was drawn in the Mail on Sunday to play away to Fairfield. The match
was arranged for Sunday, 7th February, 2016, but a few days earlier their match
organiser contacted me to inform me that she deemed their course unplayable
as there was no relief available from standing water on fairways or greens. She
repeated this again the day before the match.
She therefore agreed that if Romiley was open and available, we could play the
match at Romiley. This was then hurriedly arranged with a lot of help from
Peter Milnes and Mike Moore who ensured the course had no winter tees in
place on the day and only a minimum of temporary greens (8th, 10th, 11th &
14th). The Mail on Sunday rules allows up to 6 temporary greens and tees.
Unfortunately, the Fairfield team, after inspecting four holes of our course,
decided, two minutes before the first tee time, that it was unplayable. They
claimed that the temporary 10th was flooded and there was no option to take
relief anywhere. After a quick chat to Alex, he phoned Mike to discuss and,
although they disagreed with the complaints, it was agreed that the four
temporary greens could be removed and we could play the proper greens on
those holes. Alex kindly offered to go out onto the course and sort that out for
us.
Again, Fairfield were not satisfied with this and, after a quick discussion
between themselves, remained resolute in their decision to refuse to play the
match.
I spoke to the referee of the Mail on Sunday golf on Monday morning, who had
already had a call from the Fairfield organiser, and he judged in our favour by
awarding Romiley the win on a walkover.
Many thanks to Peter Milnes, Mike Moore and Alex
White.

Anne Ludford—special birthday
Anne may have celebrated her 80th birthday on 5th February but there’s no sign of her slowing
down. She still does what she’s always done and regularly plays golf, bridge and bowls, walks, swims
and looks after the garden. If anyone would like to be as fit and healthy as Anne at 80 then that’s
the recipe.
At school Anne was good with figures and wanted to be a comptometer operator (an old fashioned
calculator for the younger readers). She started in that role but soon progressed up the ladder and
ended her career as a site admin manager at Boddington’s and then Whitbread’s Brewery.
Anne has served on the committee as match and competition secretaries and always supports the
ladies’ events. She will be manning the cake stand at the coffee morning on 7th March, as usual, and
will be happy to receive your baked donations on the day.
Once Anne retired, in between caring for her three grandchildren, she practised her golf and
managed to reduce her handicap to 11 and qualify to play in the scratch matches and on the Bell
Cup Team, which fulfilled her long time ambition. She even played in the Bell Cup on crutches
whilst waiting for one of her two new hips, and won her match on the 15th.
In her 38 year golfing career Anne has had five holes in one and for the one on the 16th at Ashton
during an Open she was presented with a putter and the use of a top of the range Lexus for 4 days.
Anne’s name is on all the ladies’ Major boards, except for the Nellie Oldham. She’s also won the
ladies’ doubles knockout and the singles knockout several times, including in her first year of
membership. Her name is on the President’s Day board, three times, with three different partners.
Celebrations were fitted in around all the other activities and involved a trip to Bletchley Park and
Oxford for the weekend, a lunch at Cheshire Oaks with a “good” shopping day, and a family meal at
San Remo.
Happy Birthday, Anne, and good luck in this year’s Nellie. With your competitive instinct there’s
no reason why you shouldn’t have your name in gold on ALL the boards. What a claim to fame that
would be!

90th birthday for Olga Coverley
Life Member Olga Coverley became a nonagenarian on 7th February, though you
wouldn’t know it to see and speak to her!
Olga was born and raised in New Mills, Derbyshire, but it was whilst dancing in
the local Town Hall in the mid-40s that she met Alec, her future husband. They
married in 1948 and had one daughter, Lynne. Alec was appointed Managing
Director of Sonoco Board Mills, Romiley, hence the move to this area.
Subsequently a 43-year residence in leafy Marple ensued, although she retained
her Romiley Golf Club affiliation throughout! Recently Olga moved to live with
Lynne near Wilmslow. Sadly, Alec passed away in 1991.
The family now extends to two grandchildren and four great granddaughters, and
all the extended family joined her for a three day weekend event to celebrate her
prestigious birthday.
Olga eased up on golf and driving only three or four years ago. She still has the
car and she refuses to part with her golf clubs, just in case she has the opportunity
to play again!
Lots of ladies joined her for lunch to mark the occasion and Olga confessed that
she misses the camaraderie. “It was lovely to be back in the Club with all the
ladies,” said Olga.
Happy birthday, Olga, and please join us for lunch again soon.

MAJOR JOSEPH CHAMBERLAIN
Mr Major Joseph Chamberlain died peacefully in a nursing home in
Cirencester, Gloucestershire, on 27th January, and was cremated in
Cheltenham on 9th February, 2016. Major moved to Cirencester in 2013 to be
near his daughter, Barbara, who was at his bedside when he died at the age of
93.
On leaving school, aged 14, the “little lad with the long name” started work as
an office boy at Jones Sewing Machine Company. Apprenticed to the tool room,
he became a precision engineer before rising through the management ranks to
become Production Director in 1963. Business trips worldwide exposed him to
sunshine, good food and different cultures, all of which remained lifelong
interests. His sporting achievements paralleled his working life: table tennis,
football, cricket and golf filled his leisure time and the trophy shelves. When
Brother Industries took over Jones Sewing Machine Company in 1968, Major
and Allan Bird started Guide Bridge Engineering Company, forming a
successful business partnership and firm friendship.
Major was honoured to act as President of Denton Golf Club, where he was
ultimately a member for over 50 years. He explored new holes and friendships
at Romiley Golf Club after he and his wife Ruth moved to Charlesworth in
1988. He then played mid-week golf at Romiley GC and weekend golf at Denton
GC. He particularly enjoyed the “Wednesday Roll-up” and other mid-week
competitions.
Major and Ruth enjoyed
attending the various Romiley
Golf Club social functions, from
the New Year’s Eve Dances to the
Veterans’ Dinners.
After Ruth’s death in 2010,
Major managed nearly three
years of independence, thanks to
the support of his friends and the
c o m m u n i t i e s a r o u n d
Charlesworth, before moving to
Cirencester, where he continued
to enjoy sunshine, good food and
the company of kind people.
He was excellent company and is
sadly missed by all his friends.

Gentlemen’s Evening, Friday, 19th February, 2016
Almost seventy members and guests were treated to an evening to remember at
this year’s Gent’s Dinner. The food was excellent, the comedian amazing and on
top of all that there was an atmosphere of friendliness and goodwill. Everyone
who attended seemed intent on having a good time.
Once the cheese and biscuits and coffee had been served the Captain arose and
introduced Mr Austin Knight, our entertainment for the evening. He was
fantastic. Even when the microphone gave up the ghost he carried on as
though nothing had happened, telling joke after joke after joke. Very much
“old school” like the guys who appeared on “The Comedians” back in the
seventies, his jokes were un-PC, misogynistic and very, very funny. He had the
audience in the palm of his hand and even the youngsters behind the bar were
crying with laughter despite the fact that they didn’t have a clue what he was
on about most of the time!!
Mr John Glynn was so impressed that he wrote down many of these jokes and
took pleasure in telling them to my wife, Rachel on the way home!
Thank you to everyone involved in the preparation and execution of an
exceptional night.

Paul photographed with THE Ryder Cup
Paul was a member of Romiley for over 40 years, a course for which he had
great respect. This was one of the factors which encouraged him to move to the
area. He did, however, find it very tough, arriving with a handicap of 4 and
leaving with one of 16(!).
A dentist by profession, Paul was a very accomplished sportsman playing at the
very highest level of English football, training with such legends as Stanley
Matthews and Duncan Edwards during the time while he was studying at
Manchester University. He was in the Blackpool squad and, although he didn't
manage to get into the first team at Blackpool, he later became a regular in the
Stockport County side.
He thoroughly enjoyed his time at Romiley and, although his sight let him down
towards the end of his time there, he made some wonderful friends, including
'The Wanderers' who he met up with on Wednesdays at the Club.
He is survived by his beloved wife Viv, a former Lady Captain herself, and his
loving sons Stephen, Matthew and Christopher. He was a wonderful man. He
was greatly loved will be deeply missed.

Norman was born in 1931 in Stalybridge and as a boy he enjoyed
playing football, swimming to lifesaving level and was an enthusiastic King’s
scout. He was called up for national service in REME and afterwards joined the
Territorial Army where he was commissioned and rose to the rank of Captain.
He worked for the same company all his working life, Calico Printers Association,
and retired as the Group’s Chief Engineer. With takeovers and mergers the
company changed names several times so he retired from Coats Vyella after 46
years.
He married Brenda in 1958 and they moved to Romiley where their two
daughters were born. He was proud to see Helen and Cathy enjoy the university
education he didn’t have, and dearly loved his three grandchildren when they
came along.
Norman joined RGC in 1969 after playing at Werneth for a couple of years. At
that time Romiley had a long waiting list. He won the Rhodesian Trophy in 1994
and playing mixed golf won President’s day with Brenda Bennison in 2003.
On retirement he joined the Vets and was able to spend more time on the golf
course. He was a member of the “Poachers” and enjoyed golfing holidays and
days out with the boys without winning “the pouch” too often.
Ill health prevented much golf in the last four years, for both Norman and
Brenda, but they still enjoyed visits to the Golf Club.
He was a rock to the family and will be missed.

Romiley v. Mellor, Sunday 7th February, 2016
Firstly, I would like to thank the players on the day for turning up on a cold,
rainy winter’s day. I'm delighted we were able to get a convincing 4-1 win away
at Mellor in this first round match of the Mail On Sunday Competition. No one
lost as we had 3 wins plus two halves. It was great to be able to field such a
young team. I am confident this team will bring success to Romiley Golf Club
in the future so, hopefully, we can start that now. Special thanks to Rick Evans
( spotter) for turning up and providing a set of eyes for his brother, Gary. I'm
sure that helped Gary to his excellent half. The team consisted of myself, Nick
Madden, Mark Smith, Paul Mellor, Joe Smith and Gary Evans and Gary
Williams as non-playing captain. So, well done, lads. Let's continue with this
form.

Floating Pennywort
On the morning of Thursday, 25th February, 2016, your editor, Roly Hewitt
and Charles Hamilton (ex Chairman of Cheshire Conservation Trust) gathered
at the ponds at the 14th to examine the pennywort stifling the back pond and
starting to infiltrate the front pond. Was it Marsh Pennywort (very good) or
Floating Pennywort (very bad.) Unfortunately, it is the latter. It will need to
come out. It confirmed the news that Peter Milnes (Greens Director) and Mike
Moore (Head Greenkeeper) were expecting. It was your editor who was
insisting that it was Marsh Pennywort. Some you win......
Whilst there the weather
improved dramatically and
the pond was bathed in

was that the koi carp was

surface.

Captains’ Corner
With only a few weeks left to go of my year as Captain I am saddened to be writing
my penultimate entry for the Newsletter. ( Sniff, sniff.)
I would like to start this month by making an apology for an error within the
Finance Director’s report that was recently distributed. In it I thanked Duncan
Challen and Steve Hogg for their organisation of the D&C Matches. I meant to
thank Duncan and Dave Blood. Sincere apologies, Dave, and thank you (along with
all the other team organisers referenced in the report) for supporting our Club.
The biggest highlight of the month is in no doubt, and my thanks go to all the
gentlemen who attended the recent fabulous Gent’s Dinner event. With fantastic
food, brilliant company, an hilarious after dinner speaker and wine and port for all,
it certainly was a memorable evening.
My sincere thanks go to Neil McRoberts, Dave Skillington and John Harrison for
their winning bids in the mini Charity Auction. The evening was not about going
round with a collection bucket as all of the members have already been extremely
kind in their donations throughout the year! However, after our Lady Captain
donated a signed Wembley painting (won on the evening courtesy of an
outstandingly generous bid by Neil McRoberts), I wrote to both Manchester City
and Manchester United to ask for some signed memorabilia though only one was
considerate enough to reply and even kinder to provide a signed shirt. If you know
Skilly, you will know which team that was! (For those who don’t! it was City)
You will have by now probably noticed the newly erected sign en route to the first
tee and I am delighted that our Vice Captain’s company, Mercury Financial
Management Ltd (Partner Practice of St. James’s Place Wealth Management), has
picked up the baton in terms of the sponsorship of our annual AM-AM event.
Thanks also to Peter and Judith
Howcroft for the painting of
Romiley Golf Club (by none
other than our very own John
Glynn’s brother) that they
rescued from the St Ann’s
Hospice and thank you to John
Harrison for winning this auction
and then donating the picture to
the Club which is currently on
display in the back bar area. All
in all the mini auction raised a
staggering £710 and my gratitude
cannot be justified by words! RGC by Don Glynn
I am looking forward to this event later. I have no doubt it will be another truly
great occasion and would encourage others to take in what is one of the most
prestigious events in our area.
My congratulations go to both the Ladies’ and the Men’s team who took part in
their recent Mail on Sunday Golf Club Classic matches. We know that the Ladies
had an interesting situation which had to be resolved by the appropriate
Tournament Officials and they are scheduled to play their second match against
Denton at home on Sunday, 13th March.
The Gent’s team headed over to Mellor & Townscliffe for its first round match and
Mr Vice certainly put together a great squad for this match, victorious on the day.
The great news for the second round is that Romiley has received a bye which
already put this year’s team far ahead of last year’s team which was knocked out
out in the first round!
Also taking place on 13th March (aside from the Ladies’ Mail on Sunday match, the
Top Dog Finals and an afternoon lunch event provided by our caterers) is the first
round of the Men’s Daily Mail Foursomes competition against Dukinfield Golf
Club. I see that our Vice has followed last year’s approach of rewarding our own
Foursomes Knockout winners with the chance to represent our Club in this
competition and I wish Derek Worthington and John Parke the very best of luck.
The next big Romiley-only golfing event sees the elite winter golfers competing in
the Top Dog Finals. Unfortunately for Alex and yours truly, we will not be eligible to
win the big prize after being unceremoniously dumped out of the competition by
two past Captains, Steve Hogg and Duncan Challen. We all arrived for the match
knowing that defeat for either of us meant not qualifying for the finals and maybe I
should have offered a financial incentive when I suggested a half for the match
whilst walking down the 1st fairway, which would have seen us both go through.
Unlike our Pro’s weekly email, I will not mention about my failure to get past the
Ladies’ tee on the 8th (oh wait – I just did!!)
Our previous match against Mark Jones
and his son, Alex, also resulted in defeat
but what a great game it was (finishing
on the last) and what an awesome
prospect. Alex was just 12 years old; was
not fazed in the slightest by playing
against the Pro; and possesses a lovely
swing – definitely one to watch in the
future!
Like all of our matches throughout the winter, it was a really competitive (yet
friendly) match and I thought my chip in on the 14th was going to take us back
to all square, only for Duncan to putt out from the fringe of the green to match
my 3 nett 2, only then to go and do the same again on the 15th for a win before
Steve sealed the match on the 16th green.
Neil Brindley, Captain
Men’s Stableford, Saturday, 27th February, 2016

My thanks go to all of the guys who provided Alex and myself with such fun
winter matches, and good luck to everyone who is taking part on the Finals
Day.
Thank you for your continued support and I will try not to get too emotional
when compiling my end of year contribution next month!
President's Ponderings
Food! Glorious Food! And what a great month at Romiley Golf Club. Not cold
jelly and custard but a foodie's delight in the month of February.
Our new stewards, Pam and Ken, have certainly done us proud and I have
savoured their fayre during this period on three different and varied occasions.
First up was the Sunday Lunch Carvery with an excellent choice of starters,
main courses and sweets and, personally, the roast beef was a pleasure to
behold and taste with a succulent rare finish and all the right juices.
Next came the Valentine's Dinner with the room superbly and appropriately
decorated to create the right level of ambiance, complemented again by a fine
choice of courses, and it was great to see such strong support for the event,
which was our caterer's, and not a Golf Club function. The fine dining certainly
created the essence of a romantic evening.
Finally, the third event, the Gentleman's Dinner, organised by the Social
Committee, was well attended. It was a great pleasure to see the excellent 4
course dinner with wine, port and coffee being devoured by 64 appreciative
gentleman attired in DJs before we enjoyed the humour of the comedian,
Austin Knight.
With a curry night for the Captains' and President's "End of Season Bash" on
the 12th March (get your tickets early) and another Carvery and Fish Night
from Ken and Pam already planned, it just leaves me to say, "MORE!"
Bon appétit.
